RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
@S.C.:
And still no official new crewmate since it was made.
IIRC, No official new crew-mate has joined since the previous 1000+ page thread was made either, and possibly the one before that. But that's a function of the most recent new member having joined back in 2006-ish I think? We've been running on 9 for well over a majority of the series's run time.
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
Hawkins will get his ass kicked by Luffy and Zoro, and per his own statement, become their subordinate. He's the last Crewmember.
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
@S.C.:
If Big Mom does set out for Wano, Blackbeard will raid Totto Land to get his hands on her Road Poneglyph. And then will do the same to Kaido once the Wano Country Arc is done.
That is way too probable to be in this thread.
-
RE: Chopper's forms
Is Kuma still considered a Warlord? I feel like his current status sort of precludes him from doing any warlord things, but I don't know if it was ever made official.
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
And the reason he was upset with Luffy for becoming a Pirate was that he was grooming him to become his sleeper agent that would rise to become Fleet Admiral.
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
People keep saying that Jinbe needs a dream to join the crew. But Joining the crew IS his dream–he's going to spend the rest of the story repeatedly catching up to the Sunny only for events to unfold in such a way that he has to split off again and promise to join up later. He won't officially join until the crew reaches Raftel.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
@Kaido:
Elbaf is written in katakana (エルバフ), which is the Japanese lettering system for spelling foreign words and so phonetically is Erubafu. There's no confirmation (I think) that Oda based it off of fable but when the phonetics support that spelling then it's pretty much the obvious choice. Viz's "Elbaph" is technically not wrong since it's pronounced the same, but most people are gonna prefer the spelling with connotations.
Alright, thanks!
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
This might be a bit of a random question, but are English Translations considered when Oda names characters and places in One Piece? I'm specifically wondering about stuff like, say, 'Elbaf", which is widely considered to just be the English word "Fable" spelled backwards. Is it called "Elbaf" phonetically in Japanese based on the English wording? Is it some version of the Japanese language equivalent to "Fable" spelled or pronounced backwards so the reference was translated? Or is it something different entirely?
Just a thought that popped into my head today at work.

RE: Dumb Predictions
@O:
was there ever one of the dumb prediction that turned true ?
I think someone predicted a law + SH teamup at some point pre-timeskip. Cannot be bothered to confirm/deny though, and that hardly counted as a "Dumb" prediction in the spirit of this thread.

RE: Theories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread v.2
Luffy's going to throw off Katakuri's cool next time they fight by stretching his face into the shape of Katakuri's in front of the rest of the BM pirates.
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
It could still go either way. A lot of it depends on whether or not the carvings from Enel's sidestory represent their production or not.
I'm really excited because it can go a number of ways!
What I find most shocking and important to how the story wraps up is Katakuri's handling of the patissiers.
The majority of evil things the Charlotte Family has knowingly done were in the realm of being reasonably understandable.
This is because:
- They were being done to evil people/organizations.
- They were being done to people/organizations that invaded, double-crossed her or broke agreements with her and knew the consequences.
- They were under orders from Mom that were related to above reasons.
If anyone takes issue with that sentiment please note my choice of words there ;)
But Katakuri attacking the patissiers was a purely sadistic and evil act.
It's hard to explain that away and make him a redeemable character after that. Even if they wind up being 'okay' that act is still very difficult to sweep under the rug.
SO.
THAT SAID.
I'm not entirely sure whether things can end well with Mom in this arc. It's still possible, but Katakuri has basically pissed in the milkshake of any festivities that might accompany a happy ending with the Charlottes.
Not impossible! I still think it can happen! But…it's a little bit more difficult now...
Yeah, I was kind of wondering about that too actually. I mean, one of the things I noticed before the current chapter was that Katakuri was pretty much the least hateable (presumably end-of-arc) villain Luffy's ever fought. I mean, up to that point his crimes included . . . hunting down the people who tried to kill his mother? Sure he was kind of in on the whole "Kill Germa" thing, but that's pretty small potatoes for Luffy 1v1 characters. Franky did something similar to that and Oda turned him into a crew member!
But killing some guys because they've seen things that ruin your reputation? That's not even really villainous in the category of "I'm going to kill an entire city to take power" or "Let's start a genocide & race war" that Luffy is more used to dealing with, and is more . . . just being a dick. Its a clear character strike against him, but its still kind of a weak justification for getting laid out on his ass via righteous fury, Bellamy style.
My best idea is that Luffy is going to throw Katakuri off his game somehow using whatever he just discovered, and that is going to shake up the fight in a way that we're not yet expecting.
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
Interesting. Especially that last one about "Astronomer" possibly being relevant for finding Raftel, mostly because I'd laugh my ass off if the crew finally makes it into the legendary Raftel in Outer space and it winds up just being where Enel's been chilling out.
Also, "Astronomer" would be an interesting role for the last crew member, as a Robin-style "Relevant to the plot, not to running a ship".

RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
@Jazzy:
If I'm going to be realistic about it (and I swear I'm not just being biased towards Vivi here) then Staff Officer is about the only position left that's actually viable. The only other one could be Cabin Boy but then, I'd think that's more of an EoS position rather than for the main journey considering not even Roger had that position on his crew until after he became Pirate King. Staff Officer is something that has existed since as far back as Cabaji in the Buggy Pirates and as recently as Gambia in the Barto Club.
It would make sense being the last position since we would then have a core crew of 11 people, the Straw Hat Grand Fleet and the alliances of the Straw Hats as well as whatever territory they end up getting too (we know FI will at least be one of them). That's the only position that has appeared consistently throughout the series that hasn't yet been filled.
Otherwise, it'll be something completely new. In regards to that… I don't know. The question would have to be, does Oda want to follow through on the already established precedent or does he want to introduce a brand new position? I guess either way, it doesn't matter too much.
I mean, if the crew was going to get a Lookout, they just passed up a vastly more qualified candidate in Viola.

RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
So I guess one thing we can all agree on is that proto-Jinbe was definitely erased from that group sketch of the crew in Data Book Green: https://one-piece-x.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/sketch-jetnews.jpg
If that's true, I wonder if they will release a pre-erasing version of this picture once he formally joins

RE: One Piece Chapter 881: Room of Waves
Grumbles about breaks
Still, pretty good scene with Jinbe and the ship. It felt a tad on the nose for my tastes, but hey, badass feats of helmsmenship are hard to pull off convincingly in a world like One Piece.
Still have no idea what is going on with the Luffy scene. If he had something in his mouth earlier, he seems to have swallowed it by the end of the chapter.
-
RE: One Piece 863: The Consumate Gentleman
Somebody has got to say it, Jinbe won't join because he can't fit through the Sunny's doors :ninja:
I'm crossing my fingers that this gets turned into a joke in the series at some point.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
EDIT: what other roles are there, mother father and sons have all been used up, I guess what's left now is uncle, aunt daughter or grandmother
What about like a Nanny? God knows the crew could use one (Though Nami does kinda fill that role herself sometimes).
Also, I could see Jinbe being a "Godfather".
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
Even the wikia has already begun to condense Jinbe's article into tabs like the rest of the Strawhats.
To be fair, he's been a part of so many important arcs at this point that it would probably be warranted regardless. This is what, the 5th major arc (if we count "Post-War" as an arc) where he's played a key role in the plot? He's probably got the most panel time of any non-SH (as of yet) character so far.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
It would be hilarious, and pathetic, that after all of this, he trully can't fit through Sunny's doors and has to be on deck all the time.
I kinda want this to be a thing now.
Very true, I don't remember a solid argument for her but people being hypnotized by enormous tits. more or less it was the same for Becca.
Well, "Giant Mermaid with Sea King Powers" is at least unusual. Granted, it was unusual in a way that introduced very large practical concerns about how she would actually join the crew & fight, but you have to grade on a curve of "Not gonna happen", from Caribou's "HAHAHAHAHA What?" to Paulie's "Looked like a serious possibility at one point".
Can't wait to see the first female character introduced in Wano to get the next nakama treatment. Doesn't matter if she's a Samurai, Ninja, Princess, Civilian, Kaido Pirate or even dead, she will get it.
Please. We already have a corpse in the crew, there's too much overlap.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
900 pages…and we still don't have a new nakama. That's rambling
And we only moved to the new thread because the old one was getting too . . . Rambly.

RE: FINAL MATCH! Vinsmoke Sanji vs. Carrot!
Sanji winning would mean Jinbe lost to the CHAMPION 3 years in a row. I can live with that.
I love how in-character that is for Jinbe too. "NO–Leave me! You must be the one who becomes the AP Tournament champion!"

RE: 2016 APCT Fourth Round Discussion Thread: Clash of the Titans
Ryuunosuke vs. Galdino As much as I like Ryuunosuke, I'm not sure he deserves to be in the quarterfinals. Although I've never been particularly fond of Galdino either. CONVINCE ME PEOPLE
Carrot vs. Garp
Voting for bad-ass Grandpa. I'll vote for Carrot when/if she manages to accomplish anything.Luffy vs. Sanji
Year of Sanji. Besides, Sanji deserves to beat somebody after the post-TS humiliation he's received so far.Pekoms vs. Bellemere
Voted for the bad-ass Mom.Nekomamushi vs. Tom WITH A DON!
Rosinante vs. Jinbe
Why do One Piece's biggest bros gotta fight huh?Jinbe deserves to win the whole thing, but I'd have voted Rosinante over just about anyone else in One Piece.Franky vs. Koala
Kinda meh on both, honestly. I'll probably vote for Koala in the end, but I'm open to convincing.Brook vs. Nami
Most people couldn't be stealthy as a living skeleton. Most people are not Brook. -
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
I always thought Fujitora's DF allowed him to control how much the gravity of the earth affects a target, as opposed to Blackbeard who could only generate Gravitational forces emanating from his own body.

RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
I wonder if he will actually join this year. This arc has a lot of potential and could very well last until 2017.
Man I can't wait for Jinbe to be officially a strawhat.I would be surprised if it didn't honestly. This one has meta-plot relevance, and is the first Time Luffy is going to meet a hostile (or at least unfriendly)Yonkou face-to-face.
-
RE: Oda's Interviews
Or maybe he is inspired by the symbol rather than by the man himself.
Honestly it was probably just reference for that totally-not-Che guy who was the leader of the revolutionaries on that Kaidou-controlled island. The fact that its sitting next to 2 rather large guns hints to that too, unless Oda is a way bigger Gun enthusiast that I first thought.
-
RE: Monet vs. Wicca: Is This the Real Life?
Voting for a sorely lacking thing in One Piece, competent Hench(wo)men.
-
RE: Donquixote Doflamingo vs. Ryuunosuke: Hanging By A Thread
I feel like I should like Doflamingo more than I do . . . I think its a product of Dressrosa taking forever. So have a vote Mr. animated drawing! Your life may have been short and full of struggle, but it had a higher Entertainment:Screen time ratio, and is therefore the superior choice!
-
RE: Donquixote Rosinante vs. Lao G: Silent and Deadly
Normally I'm pretty sympathetic to the guys getting blown out. Not this time. Rosinante is on my short list for tournament winners this year, and I'm glad to see him posting such a strong opening performance.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
The helm scene shows Luffy struggling with it. Its message is "hey look SHs can't handle helm well enough"
Then mind remembers how well Jinbei handled it during Marineford.
Then a scene with Jinbei appears. To be fair, I think that was supposed to be more of a comedy bit than a "The crew needs someone to do X" thing.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
@Long:
The crew "needing a helmsman" is like 10th at best on the list of reasons why jinbe will join. But he will join.
It could easily wind up being his official role, but more in the sense of "The thing he does to help sail the ship" than "The reason why the crew got him in the first place". Like how Zoro is a "Fighter" because he needed a role, rather than because he was recruited as a "Fighter".
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
Jinbe will be turned into a giant Blue Fruit Gusher candy and Big Mom will eat him.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
Yeah, I'm really interested in seeing how this plays out. Luffy showing up to Wano with Sanji and Jinbe would be quite a get for the Anti-Kaidou alliance after all, but I don't get the impression that Big Mam is willing to compromise. We'll have to see.

Sabo crushed by Rayleigh, beautiful.

Okay Stelly supporters, I have a bit of a problem. I gotta take care of my flooded apartment today so I can't campaign as much as I want to.
Send our boy to the third round!
Was it flooded due to a clogged toilet? If so, Magellan might be even more insidious than we first thought!

Those voting numbers :o what a beautiful moment
Aggressive campaigns count for alot. Norland won in 2013 basically on the back of his campaigners, and its what elevates the relatively minor side characters into the big leagues.
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
There won't be any direct one-on-one fights between the Blackbeard pirates and the Strawhats, they're going to claim ownership of the One Piece via Davy Back Fight and three stupid little games.
I would so watch this as a TV special.

Vegapunk's Dragon is still at 0. Guess people forgot he existed again.

RE: Chopper's forms
Do we actually know that Pudding is the 3-eyed girl we originally saw with Big Mom? We have precedence for some of Big Mom's children looking similar (Lola and that Lola-look-alike on the ship taking Sanji there), and 3-eyed girl looked way more keyed into the Big Mom Pirates than the Pudding from this chapter seems to be. It just seems a little odd that the person who looked on bemusedly while Big Mom was talking about destroying Fishman island . . . is also a perky baker living on an outlying island that doesn't recognize Luffy until he said his name.

This thread will be as lifeless as Punk Hazard.
You underestimate the motivating power of "But my waifu should join. Jinbe will just have to die to make room"

RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
I do like how Oda and people in general say "Africa" like it's a country…
To be fair, I doubt anyone who isn't an anthropologist could describe in any meaningful detail the cultural differences between Burkina Faso and Niger. Or even Senegal and Mozambique.
-
RE: Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)
16 characters what? You think we will have around 16 character and on that 16 character Pekoms will be there too?
You have to have 16 characters in a post on this forum in order to actually submit the post. Most people fill the extra space on short comments by saying "16 characters of ___".
-
RE: Chapter 825: The WE Times' Comic Strip
I meant more like Sengoku wears it because Sora is his childhood hero or something. It appears as if that seagull had a habit of resting on Sora's cap. Sengoku's own cap seems to be a clear reference. Really doubt it's a coincidence, knowing how Oda throws in little hints like this.
I think its more the other way around–he wears it so that the kids reading about Sora see it on him and think "Oh man, this guy is like real life Sora!".
-
RE: Theories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread v.2
Because of the rest of narration where it says he finds it a game to take dangerous chances. And that he jumped off the island with his arms crossed. No flailing, no fear, just going for it with all he's got, in a "I challenge you to defeat me, ground!" pose.
Because he's bored and can't find any challenges. If you were nigh immortal and had basically conquered everything and there was just nothing to do, you'd start resorting to doing stupid stunts too. He doesn't appreciate family and finer things like Whitebeard does, just action and thrills. Which he doesn't get anymore.
I mean, Oda put the "Suicide" thing front and center, and then at the end of the chapter made a point of "Yeah, its suicide for others, but its a joke to this guy." That's the entire point. Its NOT suicide for him. Just boredom and limit testing. If he happens to die, fine, he's ready for that, but nothing has killed him so far so he isn't taking it seriously. He doesn't actually think what he's doing is going to kill him, nothing else has.
Whitebeard got to go out in a blaze of glory against all the strongest guys in the world at once, rather than dying of sickness and old age. That's an exciting time, something to be envious of
If all he wanted was death he could go to Fishman Island and then walk out the door.
Wait, does that make Kaidou just Evil Saitama? Though I'm curious why he'd have that attitude while Marine Headquarters & Mariejois is still standing. Maybe he's already wrecked it a few times and is just bored of it now?
-
RE: Dumb Predictions
The guy currently on Capone's ship is actually Sanji's evil twin (as evidenced by the goatee). He's just been waiting for the perfect moment to assassinate the rest of the crew. The guy on the Germa ship is the real Sanji, who has been working undercover in order to secure a copy of Big Mom's poneglyphs since the timeskip.
