I'm surprised about that. I will play it, for sure. But I'm not uber excited, hope I'm wrong.

This video might feel a bit nitpicky (and it contains spoilers for those who haven't played any of the FFVII versions), but there are a couple things here that make me go…hmmm...maybe try to curb the hype and just try to enjoy wathever is in there. Specially the robot hand puzzle thingie, it feels like unnecessary padding. But I guess we'll see once I face that in the game proper (if I get there, that is).

General consensus is that the remake is great.

My only real holdup is that its not the whole game and its going to take them a long, LONG time to get it all out and I don't really want to commit to that.

Horizon 2 is obviously my most anticipated.

And they're ALL going to be on PS4 so I have no real rush to get a PS5. Slightly better graphics and load times just aren't enough yet.

I heard about it. I'm hoping they have it fixed by the time I get the system. Probably won't be till they do the slim or pro or whatever.

For me, the biggest red flag with the Remake is that its gonna be a Nomura helmed multi-installment sprawling RPG with a lot of faith hinging on future payoffs.

And now, the Yuffie Episode confirms the

! inclusion of Deepground and Weiss, both key components of Dirge of Cerberus - or in other words, the old "FF7 Extended universe" is getting re-incorporated into this new main Remake Canon.

As a long term follower of the Nomura-helmed Kingdom Hearts franchise, all I can say is that those red flags are waving frantically.

Well the good news is that Tetsuya Nomura is no longer directing the remake.

Actually since Nomua is responsible for a lot of things, he's no longer directing remake. The combat and style are in place, so someone else is taking over the actual production, he's just in an advisory role now.

Granted if you're like me and there's only a a handful of games you have left to buy (on the Vita anyway) four months is a good amount of time. But it still feels like this wasn't really thought out much. When Nintendo announced the death of the Wiishop that was a two year, two step process. This on the other hand was only a rumor up until a few days ago and now it's happening over a two month period and is apparently a three step process (the first step was getting rid of the ability to purchase stuff on the website).

And then there's of course the fact that with nothing being on sale as they stopped having those you're looking at spending somewhat steep prices for games that are years old (including their DLC). Also anything you got via PSPlus? You'll still need that to download and play the game.

Just got the notice in my e-mail. To be specific, they're closing the PS3 and PSP stores on July 2nd and PSVita on August 27th.

So yeah, that's about three months notice. A bit longer would have been nice, but it's enough time to think about and buy whatever games you want to get.

Of course, if they could just move their library from PS3 to the PS4 and PS5, this wouldn't be so big a deal.

Final Question: Does anyone know of a way to back-up downloaded ps3 games? In case my old girl gives out, and I need to find a replacement?

It varies wildly and depends on the game. By mostly, the answer is no, because the PS3 and PS4 architectures were so different the games mostly aren't compatible unless the company put in the work to port it specifically and so its treated as a different game.

And because devs want all your money so they want you to buy it a second time. But there are exceptions.

For instance, Journey you can get on the PS3 and PS4 with the same purchase, and I imagine it'll port to PS5 as well. (Though they actually made that a free quarantine game so) Different trophy set.

Shadow of Colossus you could get remastered on PS3, but then on PS4 they did a complete HD remake from scratch, and its two seperate games as two seperate purchases.

Okami you could buy on the PS3, and on the PS4, but those are actually separate purchases for whatever reason… but they share the same trophies.

It gets even weirder with PS1 and PS2 games because you could buy those on the store and its anyone's guess what given system they'll run on, but the PS3 and PS4 ports are different and likely seperate purchases..

Theoretically I will play Suikoden 2 at one point in addition to theoretically playing Digital Devil Saga.

Oh wow. As someone who has bought just a PS3 and a Switch in the span of the last 20 years I was generally aware of the consumer unfriendliness of the current generations, but still, I expected more than this. Guess maybe I need to buy Chrono Cross after all. And redownload Tomba 2. Just in case.

The one bright side is, that while the PS3 was a complete cluster that broke all the backward compatibility in both directions, the playstations are basically dedicated gaming PCs now, and the PS4 is 99.99% compatible with PS5. Basically everything from 2013 on should be future proofed, barring short term licensing deals like Scott Pilgrim or many of the Turtles games..

Sucks for all the PS1 and PS2 era games that haven't been ported yet, but the future should be locked in better.

The good news is Suikoden 1, 2 and 3 are all extremely cheap. They're like 10 bucks by default and regularly sell for less than that. Ditto Persona 4.

Suikoden 4 and 5 never made it to the PS3 though as far as I know. That's no loss with 4 but a shame with 5.

Hearing the fucked-up old Chie voice has some historical value but I can watch the Endurance Run again for that.

As a huge SEGA and Saturn fan, the truth hurts. :sad: There are a bunch of Saturn and SEGA arcade titles I'd like to see get ported in a SEGA Ages type collection before they're just lost to time. Also, any thing to drive down the price of Saturn games would be welcome.

As someone who played the original trilogy dozens of times, and is currently playing N sane Trilogy on my switch, I say…Do It. Obviously I'm colored by nostalgic biases, but for all the small QOL improvements N Sane makes, theres some nagging issues. The jumping-or rather, landing - feels different, to the point where I kept failing jumps that I otherwise execute without trouble. This might also be an effect of the spruced up visuals slightly obscuring the exact edges of pits. Theres also a weird increased delay in recovery after sliding, and some occasional odd physics behaviors after bouncing on enemies. But for me, the biggest issue has surprisingly been the sound design - many sound effects are completely gone, or lack the Oomph they had in the original PSX games. Nitro crate explosions feel bizarrely wimpy.

Also, as pretty as the new visuals are, it feels like they've cranked the cartoonish zaniness just a bit too far for me, which feels weird saying about Crash Bandicoot of all things. But the animation, line deliveries and overall tone are just more exagerrated all round. Crash 1 is the hardest hit so far, where some of the more slightly ominous levels feel less so - an issue often excacerbated for me by the new OST. One track has had squeaky rubber toys added to the mix, and I'm like yeah Crash is riding a wild hog, but I don't really need this

So yeah, I'm absolutely colored by my PSX nostalgia, and N Sane trilogy is still fine if only for the portability it offers on switch, but the purist in me still wishes I was playing the originals instead. I remember looking at pictures of the first game which I hadn't played in years and the first game wasn't looking too good. Will acknowledge that I don't like the new animation they gave Cortex on the monitors in the Generator Room.

Schreier has a good track record, but something about this story seems…off?

Besides the obvious fact that TLoU already has a well-regarded remaster that is pretty much on par with most current PS5 games, I'm not sure how you get to the central conceit that Sony is too obsessed with blockbusters from sources that seem to have been a small team that decided to...uh...remake TLoU, one of the publisher's marquee blockbusters of the past decade?

I dunno, think there are signs for concern with Sony's current direction, but this story seems to be trying to ram the square peg of that narrative down a round hole.

Also, please let TLoU go. Please?

That being said if this game is indeed being made I don't see much of a reason to do this unless it's going to be like the Ratchet & Clank game for the PS4 which was a video game adaptation of a movie which was an adaptation of a 2002 video game.

And even then the original TLoU is not that old.

Also Horizon Zero Dawn is now free for… everyone. Grab that if you don't already own it.

Its even the complete edition so it comes with the DLC that I bought but never played. Crazy that game came out like 4 years ago.

What is wrong with The Last of Us? I never played but I heard some good things about it and it seems like a nice game.

I do want to buy it though to give the games a try, but sadly it's not on Steam.. so have to get a PS4 to play them.

The first Last of Us was great.

Last of Us 2, however, was a grimdark edgelord fantasy that was utterly miserable for the sake of misery.

Or so I've heard. I actually haven't played LoU2.

Anything interesting TLoU had to say about the genre–which was very little--was said in the first game. TLoU2 just ground it into dust.

Stellar production values, but I have yet to meet another human who really loved TLoU2. Definitely a game where critical assessment has seemed--in my experience--pretty out of step with the larger population.

LoU2, on a purely technical level, is great.

Story wise there was nothing there that needed telling.

So awards based on game quality are one thing, and opinions on if its a game worth playing are another. A little counter intuitive but…

You see similar happen with something like Death Stranding. Super well made game and for some people its an amazing experience, but I don't know if its actually worth playing.

See, I genuinely love the former and like the latter despite both having significant flaws and know quite a few who do. But I will agree that SotC is one of those games that's become such a Video Game Masterpiece that it gets overlooked that some questionable decisions make parts of it bloody irritating to play.

I'm just not sure what part of the core gameplay loop or the story in TLoU2 is supposed to be satisfying.

I always thought SotC was conceptually awesome (and especially ambitious at the time) but the execution was so bad that it dropped to near-unplayable for me. I still finished it and all, but I never bothered trying the remake. But that sounds kind of like the opposite of TLoU2 lol. Not that I would personally know.

SotC gets points for doing those GIANT enemies on PS2 hardware. That, by itself, made it a visual marvel worth experiencing, whatever its shortcomings.

But now any game that wants to can do that sort of thing as a normal boss fight so the spectacle is largely gone.

You HAD to play it around 2005.

They've remade it with better graphics and slightly better controls so yeah, its technically better now, but the actual overall game is still pretty shallow outside of the boss puzzles and the giant enemy setpiece thing isn't enough to carry it any more… even though it does admittedly do that part well..

See also Cameron's Avatar. Absolute piece of garbage of a film, but you needed to see it in theaters in 3D to get the raw spectacle of it all. Its still highest grossing film of all time (It took back the title from Endgame with a new re-release) so that's enough I guess but as bleeding edge as those visuals were they HAVE dated in the decade since and its just... not quite as much there..

I played SotC when it came out. But even then, the spectacle barely outweighed the fact that the camera, visuals, general controls and barebone experience were so so poorly executed.

I mean I would hate to go back and see how it feels NOW, with a modern context, if it already bothered me at the time lol. I have gone back to games I loved and struggled with the outdated tech. Stuff like Sonic Adventure 2, as a random example.

I've enjoyed SotC every time I've played it but it was never a game I liked enough to bother finishing it. Especially in an age where so many games now are large open worlds with almost nothing to do in them like SotC was. As for TLOU, the game looked interesting before release but I'd already gotten sick of Uncharted at that point and those kinds of games in general so I never ended up picking it up.

I can't deal with basically any 3D game from the N64 because it only had one analog for movement, and didn't have a second one to adjust the camera. And every single game I try to play on it, it just irritates me in a hurry.

I'm sure if I'd grown up on the N64 it'd be fine but I didn't have one when it was current, and going back to anything from that era is .. rough. Yes that includes the all time greats like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Starfox 64, etc. The camera just does not work for me when it gets to any spot where you really need to manipulate it.

I know its just a me thing, but… (And yet I love original SNES Starfox... because it doesn't do the full 3D terrain boss battle bits.)

If I had any hold out 3D games on the PS1 or Saturn it'd probably be similar, but I think most of those took advantage of the CD disk space and had pre-rendered backdrops but static cameras. LLegacy of Kain and Soul Reaver have probably aged badly though.

I grew up on it and I can tell you that in most games that controller was…..dumb and the worse part is unlike Sony and Sega they never redid it. Tack on the fact that games from this era could give you motion sickness from playing too long and it’s confusion upon disorientation.

Nintendo went from their worst controller to their best controller in just one generation. And then they got stupid again with the motion control stuff.

That's one thing I wish they'd take a note from from Sony. If a controller ain't broke, don't fix it.
