I'm only sad about all this stuff, because this means, that partly an era has ended. The Merry-era ^^ And I'm not good with such changes.. I don't like changes in almost any way, but it was one of Oda's best ideas to get Merry a sea-funeral. With this decission I am very comfortable and pleased.

I more or less agree. I think it's sad, and I can sort of get why people cry over it. Oda wanted to make the ship out to be like one of the crew, but… to me, it's still just a boat.

Half and half for Gohn. He can see the ideals behind a boat being as important as a crew member, yet Luffy was dead-on when he said that an empty ship is not the same ship. Going Merry is terminal, and clinging to it until the Strawhats sink at some random locale won't keep Merry alive.

Oh, and long live Sogeking. Perhaps his prowess can repair Cyborg Sanji.

Robin shed a single tear, Sanji hid his face. That ship just saved their lives; I'm sure they took it hard, too, they just weren't very expressive about it. Zoro on the other hand hasn't cried since Mihawk, and hopefully he never will; of all Oda's characters, "having his dream crushed" is probably a worser fate than death for Zoro, so I'm not surprised in the least that he didn't even sniffle.

Ah. What an awesome chapter, it's amazing how Oda can make you feel for an inanimate object. The final scene was particularly touching, I also liked seeing Iceberg fixing Merry. All in all, an excellent chapter.

Zoro's just one of those characters that isn't going to cry, no matter how sad he feels

It'd be like seeing Clint Eastwood breaking down and crying in a Dirty Harry movie - he might feel sad, he might feel pissed, but the only expression you ever really get is that stone face

Oda made it fairly clear with the individual flashbacks to life on the merry, that regardless of thier outer composure ( or lack thereof) they are all feeling the same sense of loss

They probably burned the flag with the ship because the ship was part of the crew, and taking it off would strip the dignity away from the ship. Remember, it was a ceremonial burning of the ship, not a burning in malice. A new flag can always be created. The U.S. retires it's old, worn flags by buring them ceremoniously. It was a very honorable way for Merry to go.

The chapter was an aweome one. I can't wait for this to get animated.

Merry was more than their ship, it was their home. A home that loved them, it turns out.

Now I can see how some of you don't have any particular attachment for a place or thing, and wouldn't care if your car was totaled or your house was washed away by a flood, but apparently the Strawhats cared a little bit more for theirs.

It's part of the story. It's unfortunate that some people don't like this particular part, but hopefully the next ship will be more to your liking.

I just noticed a coincidence with an event that happened in my area with this chapter, because on Monday a store that alot of people like + Go to in the area (Well in Driving distance in less than 2 hours (Cool store still)) burnt down. It had a petting zoo like thing with Llamas and chickens, none of the petting zoo anims died, well except one llama, but the animals they had inside did (Various animals for sale).

Great chapter none the less. Sad too.

Sorry to change the subject in the middle of this great sobfest but….Luffy and Usopp reminds me of an episode of the Live Action version of the Tick, where the Tick couldn't recognize the hero "The Champion" whenever he put his glasses on.
(Even though he put them on and removed them right in front of The Tick.)

Yeah, to be honest, neither am I–I'm surprised to see so many people admitting they cried. While this scene was beautifully done, it was still just a ship. Of course, I've long accepted the Merry's "Death" since Kaku tried to kill it.

Not that I don't inderstand why the SHs would cry. For those who don't get it, think of the Merry as a big home. Would you like to see your house burn down, especially after it saved your life...somehow?

Woah man, wait a minute. I was just helping Alrich with his Usopp insult. I mean, saying you want to force Usopp to watch the ship burn–oh, I forget the beaver part. Of course, if you lite the merry on fire while beavers are eating it, you'd just make a big mess...

Anyway, my point is that Usopp watched the Merry die, so it's not much of a way to hurt Usopp anymore. It's kind of like forceing one of those guys from "Fear Factor" to eat bugs--what's the point?

I'm amazed by the number of people who seem to think this is "the saddest chapter ever!!!" , I got teary eyed a few times reading One Piece (Chopper leaving Drum, Robin finding her mother only to lose her again a moment after) but this… It's a fucking crumbling boat that got torched. The fact it started to magically speak to its human fiends during the last couple of chapters isn't enough for me to feel anything else than relief. We can finally move on to bigger and better things.

I'm amazed at your inability to put yourself in the shoes of the characters and react as they are. The whole story is ink on paper, so it shouldn't make a difference if it were any human member of the crew, except that the purpose of reading a story like this is to escape into that world. If your can't get into that suspention of disbelief, then you can never really get out of the story what the author intended. Merry was a a friend who carried them, Merry became our friend too, so we're sad for Merry and for the crew who loved her.

Wow just wow. Didnt cry, but it was still touching.

I saw a tear on Sanji. I really think I did it was right under his hair but I'm really sure he did. It would have been surprising if he didn't shed at least one tear. He is able to show his emotions from time to time, unlike Zoro.
Oda really showed how the characters deal with their emotions. In hiding them it goes:

As touching as that was though, I'm with Aldrich that its time to move on to the best part:The aftermath. Really want to see the rest of the loose ends tied up and the others starting their new adventure.

Well, Oda said he already planned out the conclusion, and I've noticed many instances of things being planned out long in advance (Klabautermann in Skypiea, for instance, and lots of other foreshadowing), so I think a whole lot of it is planned ahead of time, with crew interaction and humor being created on the fly.

Hmmm.. sad, but… well Merry wasn't so filled with WILL to impersonate a character. We have the Klabautterman fix and this crazy rescue, but that was not enough for me to make a huge attachment.
Of course its a loss to the crew, but for many arcs it was so just a boat and a few chapters failed me to give her more feelings..

Sad for me was Nami's mother death, Luffy's reaction after fighting Ussop, all Robin and Olvia relationship, the quack doctor death, just to remember a few. These were really sad! This one was, well, very light for me.

Anyway, good ending for Merry. A Viking funeral is all that a ship can ask. Or a horse with a broken leg...

All these references to horses with broken legs have me thinking about Barbaro, the horse raised in Pennsylvania who is got some expensive surgery to repair a broken leg.

I had forgotten about the log post resetting! Thank you for the reminder, MasterLag! Unless they immediately head to the next island under the guidance of an eternal pose from Iceburg or one of the others, they will need to take the time to get a new ship built. Water 7 seems like the most logical choice if they need to get a ship though. It is unlikely the ship will be a Going Merry 2.0 because the Mugiwara crew did not bother to save the ram's head at the front of the ship. I think it will be an all-new ship. Another option is for the crew to ride on the Rocket Man or some variation of it.

The different flashbacks showed each member cared about Going Merry. However, they all had their own reasons. Zoro remembered the strength of the ship. Nami remembered Luffy and Usopp using it like a playground. Chopper remembered the amazing journeys the ship guided them to (especially Skypiea). The Going Merry may have been inanimate, but it has helped animate the main characters of One Piece throughout its tenure. The ship fulfilled its purpose and far more.
