[h=1]Day 1425: "Congratulations USA!"[/h]
! The United States administered the first shots of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to health care workers as the U.S. topped 300,000 total deaths since the pandemic began. On Friday, the FDA authorized the vaccine from Pfizer for emergency use in the United States for people age 16 and older. An initial shipment of about 2.9 million doses of the vaccine will be sent to 636 locations by the end of this week. Federal officials expect 20 million people to get the first of two required doses by the end of the month and have 100 million people in total immunized by the end of March. Trump, meanwhile, tweeted: “First Vaccine Administered. Congratulations USA! Congratulations WORLD!” (New York Times / Washignton Post / Wall Street Journal / NBC News / CNBC / New York Times / NBC News / Washington Post)

! Trump delayed a plan for senior White House staff members to receive the coronavirus vaccine early. In a tweet, Trump said he asked White House staffers to receive the coronavirus vaccine “somewhat later in the program, unless specifically necessary” after it was reported that the administration was planning to rapidly distribute the vaccine to staffers despite the first doses generally being reserved for health care workers. It’s not clear how many doses were allocated for the White House since many staff members had already tested positive for the virus and recovered. At this point who even cares, virtually nobody who fought in WW2 is alive and those who are still alive are probably senile and in their 90's atm. And unless you took part in it yourself you get zero bragging rights. Maybe it it's time to bury WW2 as a point of contention betwenn nations
You see, if people let go of what happened during World War II, how will they remind the whole world that they were very cruelly treated several generations ago? The ingrained victim syndrome is very difficult to overcome. And these people, these are permanent victims, do not understand that they themselves provoke hatred against them. After all, so many generations have changed, completely different people live. So what's the point in these reminders? will descendants change the actions of their ancestors? Will something change in history?
-
We remember World War 2 so that it may never be repeated.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

You can remember and learn from things like the holocaust without wallowing in and fetishing the time period. If i see another Hitlers gardener new indepth wanking about the minutiae of WW2 documentary i may puke. Or maybe a 100th video game about D-day. Or some guy shouting about how his great grandfather beat up someone else grandfather at the -insert name of glorious battle-

I'd say that was a massive failure.
We had World War 3 not that long after, and nowadays Israel is its own ethnostate oppressing minorities.
Maybe if we didn't put World War 2 up on a pillar as the most evil thing ever we'd be able to think more critically about things like the Cold War, China and Japan's brutal Nazi-esque histories, and America's own horrible history of imperialism.

Definitely. I just understood their post like "why do we even still talk about WWII, what's the point". Guess I understood wrong

Well, of course making mistakes once doesn't magically prevent you from repeating them, nor does everyone learn from it. Maybe you guys also have a different stance towards WWII as we Germans. I'd like to imagine that Faschism in Germany will never or at least not for a long time rise as easily as it did back then. I can't say the same thing about other countries, see the USA where a Faschism-like coup is being attempted right now with support from nearly half the country.
I still wouldn't call it a massive failure, who knows what would've happened in the world if WWII was not discussed to death. -

How did this go from COVID to a WWII thread? Stay on topic please.
-
The Cold War was World War 3.
Nobody calls it that and apparently many historians disagree with that label.
To stay on topic: Germany started handing out free FFP2 masks to people above 60 and others with specific chronic diseases, three for now and more to come in January. The pharmacies I happened to pass by were already all out

Well, when I was at the mental hospital this past week, I got exposed to Covid, it made me even more depressed and well scared since I'm high risk. I got lucky and I got tested negative. Good thing I social distance from strangers and wear a mask. Think that helped very much, I think.

[h=1]Day 1426: "A modicum of grace and dignity."[/h]
! The FDA confirmed that Moderna’s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine was “highly effective” and safe for adults, setting it up for an emergency authorization later this week to become the country’s second authorized COVID-19 shot. The FDA said the vaccine is 94.5% effective at preventing COVID-19 cases at least 14 days after vaccination and that there were no significant safety concerns. An FDA document also shows that asymptomatic infection was reduced by 63% after the first shot. Between the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, the U.S. has acquired 300 million doses in the first quarter of 2021 – enough doses for 150 million people. [h=2]Day 1427: "We want them infected."[/h]
! Congressional leaders and the White House are nearing agreement on a roughly $900 billion coronavirus relief deal that would include another round of direct payments. Checks are expected to be in the $600 to $700 range per person – less than the checks of $1,200 per person in the initial round earlier this year. The measure would also contain enhanced federal unemployment insurance, roughly $300 billion in Paycheck Protection Program loans, money for COVID-19 vaccine distribution and testing, and relief for hospitals. The bill, however, is not expected to include any new money for state and local governments. Congress must also pass a new spending bill by midnight Friday to avoid a government shutdown. (Washington Post / NPR / CNBC / Wall Street Journal / NBC News / New York Times)A Trump administration official repeatedly urged top health officials to adopt a “herd immunity” approach to COVID-19 and encourage millions of Americans to be infected by the virus. “Who cares” if “infants, kids, teens, young people, young adults, middle aged with no conditions” get infected, Paul Alexander, a senior adviser at the Department of Health and Humans Services, wrote in an email to health officials. “We want them infected.” Alexander also argued that colleges should stay open to facilitate the spread of COVID-19, saying “There is no other way, we need to establish herd, and it only comes about allowing the non-high risk groups expose themselves to the virus. PERIOD.” (Politico / Bloomberg / Axios)

Bolsonaro apparently thinks that vaccines give you superpowers. Which makes you wonder for such logic why he doesn't take it himself.
-
I don't think he's an antivaxxer but he esteem their votes. But the bottom line is that he wants to wash his hands from any responsibility for us being far behind in a National Vaccination Plan for Covid, the lack of vaccines and supplies bough by the federal gov't etc, so he spin's the tale about those "horrible" side effects a novel vaccine could have, so the population don't pressure him in make haste - it would be dreadful for him to actually do something.
-
Well, now that the virus has mutated. How fucked are we ? Are we going to use masks and go into a lockdown twice a year for ever ??
-
Stop spreading panic. Viruses mutate all the time and experts currently are of the opinion that it’s nothing to worry about for now. The vaccines should also still be effective.
-
I'm just asking questions… Thanks for answering. If it's nothing to worry about, why are the borders with the UK being closed ?
-
Because that's how proper novel virus epidemic protocol should be, no need to get a new variant of a virus spread further.
and UK has proven time and time again - since Brexit - that's is a total shit show run by neoconservatives clowns that want to kill the poor, no need to let that stain spread further too. -
The flu virus always mutates. That's why we have to get a new flu vaccine every year.
-
Wonder how the pro-life crowd is taking this news.

Bergoglio is the best thing to happen to the Church since they had a Borja there.

They downplay the importance of the Pope in the Catholic church, call him a fraud, part of the deep state, whatever bullshit reasoning they have to pull out of their asses so that they can keep their backwards opinions. It's nothing new, they won't change their minds just because the Pope said something
-
Can someone tell me more about mutations with the Coronavirus and should I be scared or it's nothing to worry about?
Man, I love this new pope! I'm not Catholic anymore, but I'm glad that this Pope is for LGBT people, saying people that are not Catholic can still go to heaven, and now this. Since my mom is Catholic, maybe this Pope can show her to the light where she be more accepting of me being transgender, but here's hoping anyway.

Yeah, that's honestly a classic case of cognitive dissonance/confirmation bias. People so stuck in their own ideals refuse to change even if the facts are laid right in front of them :/
-
Once again, Kirk Cameron shows that he's a very selfish person.

How DARE he use The Giver as a tool for his own idiocy!?

Catholics are an interesting sort.
They believe in papal infallibility up until the point they disagree with the pope.
They get very specific about that sort of thing, especially the more unhinged segments, the sort who are really obsessed politically to force people to conform to their sensibilities.
-
It's crazy, the hospital I work at got vaccines last week for a limited number of people, thought it would be impossible to get a vaccine since they would have a priority list which had people working with patients in front and those like me working behind the scenes in the back. They did a first come, first serve basis which started on Tuesday and yet I was able to get mine on Thursday morning. After talking to a lot of people and over hearing conversations, a lot of people are on edge about the vaccine. Heck, I remember telling coworkers I was going to get it and they were saying stuff to scare me into not taking it, showing me posts from Facebook that either weren't true, or were reactions that less than a dozen people out of the entire test group had. Between people actively not wanting to follow safety protocols and huge swaths of people against taking this vaccine, I'm getting pessimistic about the US getting this under control.
For those wondering, I had no adverse reaction. Only thing was the area around the injection site was sore for about 24 to 36 hours, which is the same thing that happened to me when I got the flu shot this year.
-
The results so far have shown that only a small percentage of people have had really bad reactions to the vaccine. But even if you do, the vaccine is worth it, b/c COVID is worse.
-

You're making a strawman point here, sure the conservatives catholics swing that way, but they already hated Bergoglio because he was about an "All inclusive and all loving church" and had more liberal views about sexuality and abortion.
I don't think people expect infallibility from the Pope, he is after all human, the importance of his positions in only to make people reconsider their positions on those topics and maybe change heir mind.
Here in Brazil, I would wage, is far more likely to find a protestant believing in the infallibility of their preacher than a catholic in the infallibility of the pope. -

Apparently Spain is gonna keep tabs on it's citizens that refuse to take the Covid vaccines and while keep it private, it will be passed along to EU gov't - probably with the regards of free transport within the EU.
-
Hmmm, while that has vestiges of totalitarian government, you also kinda agree that they shouldn't be allowed to travel.

Well we are facing two pandemics, the first of a deadly virus the second and the other is that people that think vaccines will either kill you/mutate you/give you mental retardation, and lest agree we don't want neither to spread.
The american concept that citizen freedom is null of any duty that does not involve military service is kinda odd to me - and I think most of the rare people with an ounce of common sense.Meanwhile Russian statistic agency revised the death toll and now it stand at 186K, very close to the 190k of the second place, but alas Vital Strategies point that 33k deaths haven't been accounted for the official covid death toll so our number should be closer to 220k

The draft or any kind of forced military service here is a touchy subject (thanks, Vietnam). However it does make me think of how my high school required all seniors to serve 15 hours of volunteer labor in order to graduate (I volunteered at my library and the local Audobon Society). I think having a required amount of volunteer service for every citizen would not be a bad thing.

I'm speaking more in the conservative republican/libertarian kinda of think of small State, in which the gov't can't crub an individual liberties even if those bring harm to others - such as the re-spread of easily preventable virus - or that universal healthcare is for socialist suckers.
-
I disagree heavily with the draft. Considering the kind of situations you could be in with the draft (war, death, PTSD, permanent loss of a sense or body part) I think it's messed up that people can be forced to choose between that or being arrested.
I metaphorically sweat nervously whenever people make fun of Trump or other Republicans for saying they support the military while they cut VA benefits and dodged the draft because I don't know if they're only mocking the hypocrisy or if they also see draft dodging in and of itself as a bad thing.
Vaccines and education though I'm 100% on board with being compulsory with the exception of people who have severe allergic reactions to vaccines. A large amount of people not getting vaccinated or not being educated is very dangerous for society.

Cuomo is now officially violating his own rules for school closures.
We were told in the summer that:
Schools with reopening plans approved by the state Education Department are open for the 2020-21 school year. Schools that have reopened must close if the region’s 7-day average infection rate exceeds 9% after Aug. 1.
Long Island currently has a 7 day average of 9.1%.
Worse, the new strain discovered in Britain that spreads faster and causes worse symptoms in children is currently spreading uncontrolled across the US.
It is absolute insanity for us to reopen schools tomorrow.
-
sigh Andy, I thought you were smarter than this.
My store put our restrictions back in place such as not accepting returns for the time being. Smart choice. Pretty sure that's company wide, not just our location. Not sure if this is statewide.

But don’t you see Robo we gotta learn to live with the old and the new strain of the virus while not being beholden to these
cumbersome and tyrannical precautions and rules designed to inconvenience us.And yeah that is stupid.
Weird and lucky way to get a vaccine shot.
