Ok, got back early. It was just a straight up 17 minutes of the movie then a sizzle reel of a bunch of other stuff from the trailers only expanded set to Cherry Bomb. That being said, What I saw was AWESOME! REALLY even more pumped for this than I was before!
I will now retreat behind the spoiler tags in order to explain in detail what happened, but before anyone reads I will say there was no setup for when the scene takes place, but it's PRETTY Clear this came from early in the movie. It definitely wasn't the VERY beginning of the movie since the Guardians seemed to already have been introduced to one another, but it definitely seems to be early on in the film, so I don't think anything about the climax of the film is spoiled here. Just to help in your decision on whether you want to read it or not.
Long and Detailed description of what happens:
! It's the prison scene. It appeared to be missing bits, but enough was included so it told a completeish story. It starts with them being arrainged in and it ends with them escaping.
! In the beginning, we have the lineup scene from the trailer with John C. Reilly giving the wrap sheets on everyone, only complete. Here's the lowdown, they left a lot out in the trailer:
! Peter Quill's Middle finger isn't censored in the movie. I was worried about this because I was like "How do people in space know it's an obscene gesture so they can censor it?…". It's pretty funny too because John C. Reilly keeps talking, and you see Quill in the background trying to "Fix" the "Machine" that he doesn't know how to work (His finger) and when he tries to pry his finger back down, it pops back up. lol. Otherwise they just describe him like in the trailer.
! Gamora is outright stated to be the "Adopted daughter and assassin of Thanos the Mad Titan". She's stated to be "On Loan" to Ronan the Accuser to do his dirty work, but she states at one point that she's only assisting Ronan so she can betray him and get the thing he's after. More fuel to the fire of the Macguffin they're after being or containing an Infinity Gem. bet she wants it for Thanos.
! Rocket is referred to exclusively as Subject: 89P13 by the Nova corps. They say "He refers to himself as Rocket" and then they never say it again. He's described as "The result of illegal genetic modification of a lower life form".
! Groot's introduction was pretty much the same as a the trailer version, I don't remember anything extra standing out to me.
! Drax's backstory, at least as presented here, appears not to be like the comics He's stated to be of an alien race, not a human in an artificially created alien body (tho, they may be presenting it this way at first, but we learn later the truth) however the part about how his family was killed by Thanos, so now he wants to murder Thanos is retained.
! Then they lead the Guardians to their cells, and Rocket is right away commenting about how this Prison won't hold him and he's escaped from tons of prisons already. He'll be out in less than a week. Also, he says apparently the Nova Corps are good guys, but this particular sector of them are corrupt assholes. There's some really funny banter between he and Peter Quill here. Groot says I am Groot a few times and Quill gets more and more annoyed each time, being like "Yeah, not as fascinating the 83rd time you tell me" and Rocket says "Yeah, his Vocabulations aint as speechy as us. His linguistic talent is limited to the words "I", "am" and "Groot" in exactly that order" to which Quill responds "… Ok, THAT won't get old fast" ha.
! Oh, the bit from the trailer where Rocket says "Aint no thing like me, cept me" is in here and it's his response to Peter Quill telling Rocket he's a raccoon. Apparently no other Raccoon exists in space so Rocket thinks he's one of a kind lol.
! Then the scene from the first trailer with the walkman happens where he tries to get the Walkman back and gets knocked down and shocked. The neat part is, that bit in the trailer where you hear Hooked on a Feeling playing feintly through the walkman and then the song kicks in fully? That's EXACTLY what happens here, and it's hysterical because it plays over them shocking Quill. it continues to play over the entire establishing shot of the prison for about 1-1.5 minutes.
! Next we have Rocket's escape plan. He's telling Gamora Quill and Groot his plan and what he needs to pull it off. He needs one of the guards' armbands that control the prison, another prisoner's bionic leg, and a power cell from a panel on the wall. While he's explaining "The second we pull off the panel on the wall, the prison goes into lockdown, so we'd better get that last" Groot, who only heard "Rocket needs that thing" is already grabbing it so the entire prison goes into Lockdown. Rocket is then like "... Or we can get it first and improvise the rest".
! Gamora says she'll get the armband, Quill says he's getting the leg, and Rocket grabs the parts he already has and starts working on the thing he needs. It's funny too here because Gamora basically kicks ass to get the thing she's going for, while Quill asks for the leg and ultimately bribes the guy to get it lol. Drax becomes involved in the prison break and helps, throwing Rocket the gun he gets in the trailer (from the "aw... yeah!" moment) We find out here that Drax's species is apparently completely literal in everything they say, so he doesn't use contractions and speaks in perfectly proper English (Quill calls him "The Walking Thesaurus")
Drax joins up with them because apparently in a scene they didn't include here, Quill promises him if he stays close to Gamora, she'll eventually lead him to Thanos. This isn't a secret tho, Quill outright tells everyone this is why he's coming along lol. "I'm not gonna break a promise to a guy who could kill me".
! Rocket's plan is revealed, the things he needed when put together enable him to take over the entire prison computer system as long as he uses them in the guard's tower... except the bionic leg, he was screwing with Quill. He didn't need it at all. lol
! He then turns off the gravity in every room but INSIDE the Guard tower and makes all of the sentry robots huddle under the tower and use their rockets to propel the tower out of the prison, and that's how they make their escape.
! Then starts a sizzle reel set to Cherry Bomb that is BASICALLY every clip we've seen in the 3 trailers we have so far just all SLIGHTLY expanded, with no dialog in any of them save one. The "I have a plan" "What's your plan?" "I have part of a plan" scene is there with dialog and it goes longer, the thing that makes Rocket fake laugh was Drax asking "What abouts is the percentage of a plan you have?" and Quill says he has "12% of a plan".
! Finis.
I just realized how detailed I made it so I made a TL;DR version that's basically all the bullet point highlights.
! - It's the prison scene from them being arrainged to the escape.
! -Peter Quill's middle finger isn't censored in the movie
! - Drax is presented at least in the beginning as an actual alien from a race that speaks 100% literally. But his family was still stated to have been murdered and he still wants vengence on Thanos for it.
! -Speaking of, Thanos, Gamora is outright stated to be Thanos' adopted daughter. She's "On Loan" to Ronan at the beginning but this is a ruse to steal something.
! -I'm GUESSING that something is an Infinity Gem, and she wants it FOR Thanos. But this isn't stated, just a theory based on everything else I saw here.
! -Rocket is great and has hysterical banter with Peter Quill.
! -Rocket doesn't actually know what a Raccoon is as he's the only one of his kind he knows of.
! -Groot does indeed only say "I am Groot" the entire time and Quill makes some funny comments about it.
! -The scene from the trailer where the guy in the prison has Quill's walkman is exactly how Hooked on a Feeling is used in the movie.
! -Rocket is an expert at tech and has experience breaking out of jail. The prison break is all his plan.
! -Drax joins them because Quill promises him if he stays close to Gamora, she'll be able to lead him to Thanos.
As for my actual impressions of what I saw and the acting etc. Honestly, I'm REALLY pumped for it. There seemed to be missing bits but obviously this was a chunk of a movie, so I don't expect it to be whole.
The acting was actually really good. I LOVE Chris Pratt as Peter Quill. He's honestly, basically, Han Solo. He's a complete smartass and it's amazing.
Rocket I was worried about, lack of Cockney accent had me sad, but Bradley Cooper is doing a decent job, he was easily the standout part of the clip.
Groot is adorable. He's huge and scary yet I think he's the cutest damn thing.
Gamora was fine here, but she didn't really do anything that was lifting an emotional acting muscle. She was a badass killer here and nothing in this tiny snippet of plot necessitated anything else from her.
Drax… ok, he talks in a really weird way and when you first hear him talking it sounds like Bad acting... but then they explain in-story why he talks that way... maybe Bautista was a crappy actor so they added this quirk to make it make sense? It's kinda funny when they explain why he talks this way (see my spoiler bit up top) but it kinda makes it hard to get a beat on his acting from what I saw here. He might be awesome and he's playing the speech quirk up for laughs, but it felt really stiff.
