Chapter 923: Emperor Kaidou VS Luffy
-
Very satisfying chapter
-
The spreads in this chapter were insane. Getting huge Marineford vibes.
Edits:
Oh god I read the chapter in like 4 minutes lol. Seemed like a chapter right out of Marineford. Meant to be super brisk with impactful spreads and caught me really off-guard that I finished it so quickly.
So, since I haven't commented on this yet, this is a loss Luffy needed, badly. He went in guns blazing against a Yonkou - and while his emotional reasoning was understandable - he needed more logical reasoning because he legit could have died this chapter if the story didn't rely on him. This will make him realize the true terror of the Yonkou and what kind of strength he'll need - and allies - to close the massive gap.
-
Well he tried folks
=D -
Last page of next chapter. Luffy, Law and Kid in the brig.
-
Kaidou seemed weaker in his dragon form. But as a human he is a mountain, impossible to scratch, like Linlin was.
-
Wow, first time I saw it so fast in a while…
-
He was pushed a bit by just about every big hit in both forms. My assumption was he was getting annoyed and wanted to deal with Luffy more intimately
-
"What kind of KING did you say you'll be?"
Damn Kaidou is a SAVAGE! I love it! Gotta remind Luffy this is the New World again. -
Mortals who fancy themselves heroes.
-
Kai D O, putting the L in Luffy.
-
So much for the "5th Yonko" got 1 shot in his strongest form. What sort of monster gave Kaido his scar?
-
it really needed Luffy to be the one to hype Kaido, no one else deserved such treatment, and no one else would've give us the unbeatable impression of Kaido with this.
also, I couldn't see Jack anywhere, is that guy ever stop being useless?
-
Man, I thought the point in the chapter when Luffy started running toward Oden Castle was going to be a bit of a relief point. We'd see the alliance members safe, all that. But no, instead we find out that Kaido left no stone unturned and paid a visit to little Tama too. At that point, there's no going back. Oda, you've captured my full attention, and here's hoping you can maintain it.
-
Damn Oda, you couldn't leave Tama alone at least. Kaido just has to fuck up everybody?
-
This chapter was beautifully drawn and had a great sense of rhythm, which is excellent for fights. It's also worth noting that Hawkins and Shutenmaru were both watching Luffy's performance, which may be the turning point for them in the arc.
Despite the good, I am also a little bothered by the OHKO. I understand the message behind such an ending to scream that Kaidou is indeed the strongert creature alive, so strong that defeating him is something out of anyone's league. However, at the same time, this OHKO feels a little unreasonable to me considering Luffy's durability.
That said, we never know what are Oda's plans. Overall, the chapter was pretty good considering its merits, but not great considering that I'm astonished by the OHKO.
-
Wowzers! A one hitter quitter! Glad it was Luffy who go first go and got knocked out. Zoro needs to be next.

Luffy's Durability and Endurance are what make the OHKO so impressive even when compared to similar showings of power against him in the past.

There is a phase when confidence becomes stupidity and idiocy. I thought Luffy has outgrown that phase, apparently not.
-
Daaaaammmnnn! "What king of kind of king you said you will be?" Awesome!
Yonkous are total beasts. Luffy couldn't scratch big mom and neither could he do anything to kaidou.
No wonder everyones so afraid of yonkous, especially kaidou.
1 hit is all it took. From BM as well as kaidou. The attacks that sent doflamingo flying all over the place, couldn't even displace kaido. How the fuck did shanks stop this guy ??
Also, kaidou's attack, looked to me to be loaded with CoC. Maybe full control of CoC? Surely this isn't his strongest attack?
Shutenmaru seems very strong now, all with kaidou wanting him to be in his crew and him being so relaxed/calm in front of kaidou.

Tama got hurt dude, all bets are off.
-
Kaido didnt even use Armament Haki to block. Oh dear lord.

-
Damn I love Kaido, it's been long time since I feel this way about a character. lmao.
and rip Tama…..........
-
What does Luffy have left in his Arsenal? Gonna need more than a King kong gun by the looks of it.
-
Tama got hurt dude, all bets are off.
Live to fight another day, he knew this two years ago in Saobody. This time, he's cocky and he sees himself as the real deal. He wants to defeat Kaido right here right now. Who da fuck does he thinks he is?
-
Kaido seemed honestly disappointed in how weak Luffy was.
Amazing chapter.

The guy who took on an untouched, undefeated Yonko commander and won.
Needless to say…
-

I reckon this will result in someone showing up and giving him a crash course on awakening.
-
Kaido probably lost all those battles cause he was blind drunk. Then when he comes to his senses he just destroys.
-
Luffy started really good and all good ended. One Punch is all what Luffy needs.
-
@Kaido:
The guy who took on an untouched, undefeated Yonko commander and won.
Needless to say…
Did he forget he gave Big Mom a Kong gun attack and BM kept smiling?

Luffy makes me think of guys who got a good job luckily by being at the right place in right time, got his salary trippled (from about 500 millions to 1.5 billions) and thinks he is hot shit. Then he gets stomped by a true veteran executive in the same industry (One of the 4 Emperors).
-

He started good? Did you realize Kaidou took all that with his bare flesh? The entire show was an embarrassment.
-
I know everyone's gonna say this is bad because she's a child but I really really really hope O-Tama is dead.
Somebody had to say it
=D -
@Kaido:

Needless to say…
If he had 1 hit KO katakuri, maybe he could have been cocky
Anyway, we enter the let's rescue Luffy from prison now i suppose. Let's hope it will help him think even if i have doubt this side of luffy will ever change… -
Good thing is that Luffy is not dead. He's still in One Piece.
-

Why bother picking up a fight againt Kaidou in Punk Hazard and coming to Wano then? Why try invading Enies Lobby, Impel Down and Marineford?
All of those attempts were insane idead that Luffy did because he had someone to protect.
This time is not different. Luffy just saw his crew potentially getting exploded into nothingness by Kaido, and he was just told that Tama was hurt (or killed, in his mind), so why would you expect Luffy to act as cold as someone like Law?
We must know to discern when Luffy is being cocky and when he has a narrative reason to act recklessly.
-
The kids are cute.
I'm surprise Kaido knew Speed by name. He is a better boss than I had expected. I wonder what he did with Tama. Did he just beat her up or does he plan to use her to improve his forces? I wonder if Speed will continue to be an ally until the end. It seems like it.
Luffy did decent until Kaido stopped playing. Using gear 4th on an unknown enemy was just freaking tho in my opinion. That form should only be use when you are sure of the pros and cons of your situation. LAw is still around and has a great fruit for escapes. Shuten is either going to hold back Kaido or visit the castle.
So the pirates of the worst generation are officially worthless to emperors(in terms of strength). But there's the problem that Luffy doesn't have a real level he makes a draw with pretty much every character when the plot wants him to. Remember how him and Franky were equal? Or how he got destryed by Lucci? I don't tend to trust Luffy's beat down. He's kind of like Ippo from Hajime no Ippo.
That's just a a bad chapter name. Say "Strawhat Luffy" or Member of the Worst Generation Luffy" or "Gokou Luffy" Or "Emperor vs Future Pirate King" Or Kaido vs Luffy". Giving Kiado a title and then saying Luffy is just bad.
-
This guy is riding on a giant sheebie, nothing else matters.
-
Kaido - 1 Luffy - 0
Luffy is sleeping right now. He needs to be Awaken, if you know what I mean.
Do you guys think that Curly hat Pirates will be sideline again because they are injured by Kaido? Then will be healed maybe in the middle of the war to cure and feed the injuries and civilians? I do.
-
Awesome Chapter! Now let us await the zoro rescue party! =DDDD

Amusing you say this, as a lot of people were whining last week that Luffy didn't start out with a Gear 4 attack when he blindsided Kaido. I feel that what he did is the appropriate compromise, where he starts with Gear 3rd, and then begins to go into the Gear 4th stuff. At the end of the day, for him to not use it during his clash against a Yonko of all people would be pretty off-putting. We don't need a rehash of the Cracker fight, where Gear 4 is used as a cliffhanger for the next chapter. Oda was wise to get it out the way, as anyone with common sense would know that Kaido's victory was absolutely guaranteed.

I kind of like it. It's pretty fitting seeing as how Kaido utterly looks down on him, especially with the line of mocking the kind of king Luffy will be. To Kaido, he's just Luffy, a brat who is way in over his head.
-
Tama isn't dead i think. Why speed still call tama as master? If tama dead or unconcious then speed must release from control of devil fruit just like sugar's situation. Probably tama just got injuried, nothing else.
-
Did anyone feel like there was barely any movement in the last page when kaido attacks?
Second to last page he's on the ground. Last page he's not only back up but already swung the club. All there was were two panels of their eyes.
Where was the club while he turned to a dragon… Might have missed it -
Luffy just got babyshaked!!!
-
Looks like a lot of posters' theories are coming true. Here's one of my own: Sanji with use the suit to break in and save Luffy, et al.
-

We must know to discern when Luffy is being cocky and when he has a narrative reason to act recklessly.
In all those situations Luffy behave cockily and survived mostly because of his extreme luck and his plot armor. This time won't be any different.
Except this time it seems he needs a massive power up
-
Luffy needs his CoA to be far stronger. He was massacred by Katakuri in CoA department even though Katakuris specialty was CoO.
I would be all into Luffy fighting Calamity that has CoA strong enough to tank G4 Boundman attacks and be okay. When he improves in CoA as much as he improved in CoO then he could be as dangerous as Katakuri or Marco.
Of course to be on par with Katakuri and Marco he would need to awaken his devil fruit. I expect him to be as strong as them by end of Wano. Then after Wano and taking on Big Mom it would be perfect time for 1 vs 1 with an Admiral and winning almost even fight with Kizaru(Luffy promised to beat him one day).
Maybe Luffy and Co will go to holy land next to meet Dragon as well as to pick that treasure Doflamingo spoke about. That would be great chance to fight Sentomaru, Kuma and Kizaru.
After effects of Wano could push marines main forces further into New World, leaving Holy Land less protected than ever. Then to Elbaf as last big pre-Raftel stop.

Luffy just got too confident and thought he'd be able to end the hunting, and avoid the long, detail planning by KO ing kaidou. Also, emotion defeated him, assuming his friends and Tama were in really bad shape, and act without much thinking. This'll give him lesson to not be overconfident. Kaidou is yonkou, it's impossible for him to finish, the one who would probably be, the strongest yonkou in one single occasion.
