The trailer for Netflix's new She-Ra series is out. The show looks it's good so far.
She looks a hell of a lot like Artemis from Young Justice before transforming. Also, She-Ra AND the Princess of Power? As in they're not the same person? Odd. I guess they're really going for something that radically departs from the orignal She-Ra: Princess of Power. Did they already reboot He-Man and/or Masters of the Universe elsewhere?
I watched a few episodes of Paradise PD on Netflix and I have to say, it's very similar to another show I watched on there, Brickleberry, which used a great deal of the same cast members, and which I also enjoyed. It goes way, WAY more over the top than Brickleberry ever did and I was surprised to learn that Justin Bieber was the voice of one of the main characters (a step down from Daniel Tosh being one of the mains in Brickleberry). I think the characters that make up the central group in Paradise PD are more entertaining than the ones in Brickleberry overall, so I get the feeling I'll enjoy it more thoroughly even though Tom Kenny's character is more or less the same in both.
-
it actually says "Princesses" so…a group?
seems like a poomped flash style thing. Can't say much, doesn't look particularly beautiful or fluid, have to wait a bit more to check how it will turn
-
I never watched any of the original show, but was He-Man/Adam somehow connected to it?
The most I know is that she is her sister.

Not sure I like that transformation sequence. I mean, maybe it's a little too Sailor Moon? But She-Ra isn't Sailor Moon. She's She-Ra.

The only other princess I can think of in her group is Glimmer. So maybe they're creating more characters.

You need to watch a movie called He-Man and She-Ra: Secret of the Sword. It basically covers the entire story of how He-Man and She-Ra meet, and how She-Ra becomes the heroine she is and makes all her friends.
It's technically just the first 5 episodes of the She-Ra series, but it works as a movie.
-
I just meant facial-wise, her eyes and hair when it's tied back remind me of Artemis from Young Justice. After she transforms, though, the resemblance doesn't come through anymore.
-
Oh, if they want to give her a ponytail then whatever, I just want her transformation to be a little cooler than that.
But hey, maybe it'll be cooler when we see it in full form.
-
The longer trailer for She-Ra got released. I'm still interested in it. Mostly cause I was so young when I watched it I hardly remember any details or plot lol.
-
Hmmmm, very interesting. Making it their own She-Ra without losing the basics. (although I wonder if He-Man and Grayskull itself will ever show up. I mean, She-Ra is supposed to be his twin sister)
-
Great redesign on Catra. Monsters look good too.
I'm decidedly not the target audience but it looks like its in fine hands. Unlike the new Thundercats….

I might get some hate for this, but is it just me or it looks really amateurish? Like, I know there was a lot of controversy about the character designs themselves, and i have to say I'm not really a fan… but jesus the animation is clanky and weird. I guess I could describe it by saying that there's actually no sakuga going on whatsoever? I'd understand making simpler character designs for the sake of easier animation, but for the movements to look like that? I mean, what's the point? You might as well have just used the old, more intricate character designs!
I guess they were really stripped for cash, because just off the trailer it feels like the animating team is really really small. Most of those scenes look like a one-person job! If netflix can produce Castlevania and make it look and animate in an awesome way, why does this look so… cheap? It's got worse animation than the simpsons! Meh.

You haven't actually seen the original series in motion, or just how much they resued the same handful of frames over and over, have you. They could have those designs because they didn't actually do any movement with them.

The Simpsons is actually pretty high animation quality. It's not detailed, but the actual frame rate and consistency is pretty absurd. Something as simple as the characters having a full range of lip flaps and constant subtle movement are things taken for granted, but Simpsons is loaded with that.
And Castlevania looks like it looks because
1-they're using all the anime shortcuts. Lots of still frames, slow pans, or only having mouths move. Detailed stuff around it to disguise the fact.
2-It's ONLY a 12 episode series… that they've been working on since 2007. And the first four episodes came out a year and a half ago, and the rest don't arrive until late this mont. Its taken a year and a half between the first four episodes and the next 8. It looks like it does because there's very little of it, it's not planned as an ongoing, and they spent forever on it.Your mixing up animation design and animation quality, which happens all the time. How something looks in a still frame isn't the same as how it looks in motion. They're not the same thing.
Voltron on the other hand is a much better thing to point to for consistency and quality, and they throw an obscene ammount of effort into their season ending fights.

I finally got to see the first couple of episodes of She-Ra. I can't quite put my finger on it but this version in general reminds me of something else but I can't recall what.
I love Bow. I just like that he's kinda a dip but is just nice in general.
I'm three episodes in, and its pretty dang good! Not exaclty "original", but just well crafted. Good pacing, good writing, good acting- plus, looks and sounds great. Really worth a look.
As for the vibe, I'm kinda getting Avatar + Steven Universe in an 80's Sci-Fi Fantasy pastiche setting
-
I believe this is what Stevenson and her crew are trying to evoke with that artstyle:

Atlantis: The Lost Empire?

The eyes and the noses are more Ghibli than Gainax It's a sort of style several american artists eventually arrived at.
Though obviously the haircuts and color choices are something else entirely run through 90's magical girl filters.
I know I've seen a couple comics in a very similar art style but can't remember their names for the life of me. Oh well, it does remind me of Rod Espinosa's work somewhat.
-
Puppy Cat. That's what it reminds me of.
!
Also Mermista is my favorite Princess so far lol.
-
Am I the only one who thinks no one in this new She-Ra is straight?
And Scorpia is best princess btw.
-

It kinda does feel that way. Like at minimum everyone is Bi.
It's actually hard for me to have a flat out favorite. I love Bow, Mermista, Scorpia, Swift Wind, Kyle poor poor Kyle, Sea Hawk and Entrapa.
-
Got through the entire first season with my wife. It shapes up a little in the second half after it stops being "princess of the day" episodes. They've apparently already got 50 episodes ordered/underway/done, so there's a lot more to come.
It's nothing groundbreaking, but its a fine update. Very Avatar/Steven Universe, and more of that is always good.
I like the badguys way better than the goodguys. Way better. Liked Catra from the start, and then Scorpina was great once she came in… and then especially once they get the third member of their squad. Yup, way better than the heroes. I'm on team villain baby.

! Catra did nothing wrong.
! Once again, much like current MLP, a show that doesn't target me got me in it's crosshairs. I adore the show so far, Catra being my favorite out of the bunch. Honestly, I enjoy The Horde crew a bit more than the actual protagonists, and that includes Entrapta and Scorpia. I find them a little more relatable and can't wait for Team Anti-Best Friends (Catra, Scorpia, and Entrapta) to have more interactions~ -
Catra did nothing wrong.
…Dude, spoilers. Not everyone is that far -some are likely considering starting based on this thread.
-
Catra got on my nerves too much for me to really care about her. You can't
! just run your mouth off and not do what your told. Antagonize everyone then expect to get promoted. That's stupid. Evil Army or not.
-
I dont like Catra. Simple as that.

Sorry that was my bad, spoilered the whole thing.

! I'll admit, she is childish. But as the story went on she got more calculating and was able to pull off legitimate plans that even Shadow Weaver wasn't able to pull off for all her magic. I feel like she backed up a lot of her bravado and Horvack seemed to take note.
! All in all, she is still very loyal to those she deems trustworthy and I like that. She wasn't the betrayer so I don't see her doing that to her little circle of friends. -
Thinking about it a bit more, was anyone (here) really surprised that
[hide]Catra subverted the whole 'rivals turned allies' trope in episode 11 given that way back in episode 1 she pretty much bluntly stated to Adora that 'yeah I knew the Horde fed us a bunch of propaganda but who gives a shit we can rule these suckers!!!'
Adora is great and Bow doesn't lag behind btw but yeah I agree the villains are more interesting to watch. Scorpia is best princess.[/hide]
Also is it controversial to say that this is in the top… 5 Netflix original animated series? (if Dreamworks productions count as them)

Voltron, Bojack, Dragons, and…. ?
Is Aggretsuko Neflix made or is it just them hosting an existing anime?
-
Voltron, Bojack, Dragons, and…. ?
I know Big Mouth and F is for Family are uglt as fuck to look at and/or extremely cynical but they're realy good too :<
didn't know the Dragons series was that good too tho
-
I know the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina isn't animated, but could that be added?
-
Voltron, Bojack, Dragons, and…. ?
Castlevania.
Yeah, I'm gonna have to watch this when I get a chance, even if the art style doesn't swing with me.
-
Castlevania.
That was just a mini-series, no plans for it to be an ongoing long term thing. Not really the same category.
And I didn't like it, but that's on me.

They style is better in context, you get used to it pretty quick. And the animation is nice and fluid and full of good colors.
I just wish I could figure out what exactly it reminds me of. It's driving me nuts, I KNOW I've seen comics or manga in the same style.
didn't know the Dragons series was that good too tho
Eh, it doesn't do anything for me but they made like 100 episodes (on top of the two Cartoon Network seasons) and the quality is decent. The effort is certainly in there even if it never hits the heights of the original movie.
-
Quick question: as someone not familiar with the original material (I'm barely familiar with the original He-man), would you recommend this? I'm digging the animation and art style, and it'd be fun to see a more female-oriented fantasy-battle-cartoon.

Familiarity with the original material isn't needed, this has almost nothing to do with it except character names and general premise.
If you're liking what you see, go ahead and give it a shot.
Only real issue is they're super heavy handed on the "we have a bunch of princesses!" syndrome going on, because its a girl cartoon, of course it does.

This show is AMAZING! My sister and I binged it first two days after it hit and loved it so much! We are already planning out cosplay groups, lol. I wanna be She-Ra, sister wants to be best Princess, aka Scorpia, so there's that.
They've apparently already got 50 episodes ordered/underway/done, so there's a lot more to come.
…. Source? Because that's amazing news.

“Once the first season was greenlit, we were immediately boarding, designing and writing,” Stevenson recalls. “When I first pitched the show, I approached it as if had one season, but we now have four arcs of 13 episodes done. I had ideas for the big overall scheme for the show.”
There are a lot of big arcs coming up, and I’m really excited about them. So, you know, the first 13 episodes are just really setting a lot of that up. I’m really excited for viewers to get into the later arcs.
Spoken like someone who has done four seasons already, not someone hoping to do four seasons.
I'm also really cetain I saw somewhere else someone saying they had four seasons in the can, but I can't find that paticular quote now and like 80 different interviews dropped this week.Considering how Netflix treated Voltron and ordered like 100 episodes upfront and then rolled out a batch every couple months over 2 years (how they're treating all their animated stuff) it seems like the way they'd go with it.

I've never even heard of Puppy cat.
And I'm distinctly thinking of a comic artist style

Well its not one I've seen. But yes, the styles are pretty similar.
-
Personally it's reminded me a lot of RWBY with more rounded designs.
Got about 5 episodes in. The Sea Hawk one is by far the best so far- he's such a hilarious pastiche of Han Solo that I loved him immediately.
-
Nine and a half episodes in and I don't think this show's for me.
There are lots of things I like (diverse cast, Adora/Catra, forming the rebellion), but I'm not loving the characters except Catra and the scorpion lady. And, I straight up dislike Glimmer. She complains about her mom but acts like a brat. Everyone else varies from okay to somewhat interesting. I miss that old forest lady, she was great. Not quite sure how to explain it but the way cartoons try to be mature, but still be really goofy throws me off if not done "right". The show doesn't do it right. That and everyone competing to be Snark MVP. The main three has this thing where either they're level-headed, snarky, or stupid. They're almost interchangeable. It's not their personalities shining through, its the need for whoever's on screen to land a joke. For example, let Adora's naive steer her jokes. Let Glimmer be the general snarky one, and make Bow the general comic relief. Not saying to pigeon hold these characters, but give them something that's their own.
Other than that, like the show. But, Hordac isn't scary at all. The Horde, in general, is underwhelming except for their two all-stars. Maybe its the age demographic. I expected something for preteens but this seems like something for a younger audience.

You also forgot that Dreamworks also have their other shows on streaming sites like Amazon Prime. So in total, they are working on 30 to 40 shows now. (Some may be unannounced.) I like the new She-Ra. Well, I haven't seen it yet. But I do love Catra cause she's a furry. :3
-
Finished this recently. 'Twas pretty good, Catra was definetely the highlight, as she ended up the most fleshed out and interesting character. Overall, I wish there had been a bit more context -like, what does the Horde actually want? - and I hope that they get a bigger budget for the next seasons. Etheria is the most sparsely populated planet I've eve seen, and for a group called The Horde, it seems to consist of maybe 20 people.
! When Catra was promoted at the end my reaction was "Wait, really? Theres no military hierarchy between her and Second In Command?"
-
Official birth dates for your trivia needs. -
Entrapta is an Aquarius. Makes sense.
-
Glimmer and I are birthday buds…sweet~
-
I almost have a birthday with Sea Hawk. Not sure how to feel about that.
Even less sure how to feel about their world having our calendar and naming conventions. (Or maybe they don't, there's 5 months not accounted for at all.)
-
The closer I get is Scorpia by a 10 days margin, but it seems my brother has the same as Adora.
