It's heavily implied he has connections to Wano and that his teacher may have come from Wano. It's hinted at when Momo used that word that he heard Zoro use.

But it's implied that he uses their fighting style. It's not like he's a swordsman in a classical medieval sense or anything. Samurai is simply a caste and title, not a fighting style.
EDIT:Also Zhenja, didn't Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, grow up in relatively safe environments? You can make the argument for Sanji since the Baratie was a very supportive environment. They were in the East Blue after all.

Although, hanging out with pirates, bandits, being beat up by them and attacked by animals isn't that safe though, in Luffy's case.

The events in their past formed their characters. They are who they are, because of these events.
Carrot didn't show any signs of anything like that, until Pedro's death, she was that happy naive girl that wanted to have fun and an adventure.
Maybe she's a maniac who lost her mind because something tragic happened to her, and because of that she acts the way she does. I don't know.

Does anyone think we'll get new crew members AFTER Wano arc? I just can't see anybody joining after Wano. Oda himself said that the series would be accelerating towards it's climax.
While I'm sure more characters will make surprises appearances for the Battle against Kaido it seems like we know all the major players now relevant to the story arc.

I understand the hype around Yamato, but new nakama? People want to talk about trends in the narrative, but Yamato was brought up like 8 chapters ago last minute and revealed last chapter. This is all the while when the Straw Hats are doing the raid.
Yamato may have only come up recently, but he had a great intro scene and design, and seems like he might have some interesting backstory stuff going on being Kaidou's son but not on his side. And enough of a troublemaker that he needs elites sent out to find him? One of which he took out in a single shot with an unusual weapon? And people speculate from his clothes and handcuffs that he has ties to Oden. And they've "been waiting for Luffy." THat's really fertile ground to be an interesting character.
And that's all in their first chapter, within just a couple pages. That's a hell of an intro. He's got potential but I'm not sold on it without seeing what's under the mask.
I feel like Oda is messing around with us like he hasn't since Water 7. That was a masterclass in creating the need for a character, building up eligible candidates, and then smashing them over the head with the guy no one expected. The difference now, of course, is that we have nowhere near as strong an inclination to think anyone besides Jinbe will join. It's hard for me to imagine Oda introducing a prominent need in the crew at this point, but I can imagine he might highlight a potential parallel in whatever flashback we'll get through Kaido. Just a thought.
Yamato has been set-up to be an incredibly important character:
Based on that it is hard to see Yamato's role in the remainder of this Wano Kuni arc story not being significant. And it is within that significance that some readers see potential in Yamato's character to be developed into one who decides to travel with the Straw Hat Pirates.
Sure it may seem premature but there is nothing wrong with readers voicing their excitement over Yamato and wanting him to be more relevant within the story of One Piece. The desire around wanting Yamato to be a nakama is a testament to the strong and memorable introduction Oda has given Yamato. While I personally don't see Yamato being a Straw Hat Pirate nakama at this point, I can recognise the potential and as I mentioned before in a previous post, 'through the span of three pages, Yamato has become an immensely fascinating character whose entrance beckons curiosity'. Who knows how excited readers would be of Yamato if Oda dedicated a whole chapter or a whole fight to Yamato or both.
Jumping on the Yamato train after appearing in a single chapter and speaking three lines of dialogue is logical. Thinking Carrot will join after she spends 160 chapters adventuring with the crew across multiple islands is no different than thinking Monet or Perona will join. Got it. Logic.

This shows something I've said recently: a creator isn't concerned about unique colors, numbers or whatever when creating a new main character. He first creates the main character then tries to fit it into whatever themes hat character needs to fulfill. And, in the end, he may even end up changing the whle pattern because it's the character, not colors or whatever, that matter to the story.
Yamato literally shares a similar goal to all of the retainers: To open Wano's borders. Unless she has something outside that, then I say people are jumping the gun way too early because of first impression. Like Tama, like Kiku, like Raizo, like Kawamatsu, and now with Yamato.
It's hype fuel for the community despite being introduced 8 chapters ago, name dropped 6 chapters, and appeared last chapter all within Act 3. People talk about trends in the narrative, yet Yamato never appeared or was mentioned, nor name dropped in either the first 2 Acts of the arc or in prior arcs as we are in the battle against the Beast Pirates. Didn't all the Straw Hats appear within a short timeframe when they appeared in the arc? Isn't that the trend? But apparently we can look past that.

After re-reading (or should say) going through the process of re-reading after Drum Island these are my thoughts its basically Oda does what he wants in alot of ways there may be some similarities at the end of the day its just fans analyzing stuff and in the end its Oda who decides as he can do what he wants.
The only definite I can see so far is they have to make a connection/impression with Luffy
I will also keep vauge since chapter just came out. But yeah, that's two dramatic reveals from Yamato in a row.
Personally I'm not on the hype train, but there's stuff there. Storywise I think Yamato may be too tied to Wano, but as far as splashy memorable intros, that's gotta be among them.
Yamato has given a bigger strawhat feeling in the last chapter than Carrot did in her entire set of manga appearances, imo.
Yamato will fulfill the vital crew role of "Oden fanboy" so that even after we've left Wano, Oda can remind us through Yamato at least once a chapter of how amazing Oden was.

TWO dramatic introductions, an actual backstory that will be relevant to the rest of the arc and create conflict and story points with the arc we're in, a connection to Ace, a unique weapon and fighting style, a quirk of a woman claiming to be a man? These are all actually unique things to the character. Child of an Emporer is unique to Kaidou, but BM has a million kids including Pudding, so its not that big a deal.
But the Oden worship is kind of like fifty other characters like all the scabbards. Dream seems very tied to the current location, and like they're just sort of here to help conveniently tie up some plot threads by coincidentally owning Oden's journal… and who knows what quick fix plot wraps ups that could provide later. Ace connection was already a thing with Jinbe, and Tama within the same arc also has it, so that's not much. "I knew Ace" is maybe becoming too much of a convenient shorthand for instant connection.
It was pointed out that she was in fact in Oden's flashback (or at least the pants were) so Oda conceivably had the character in mind a few months earlier than first mentioned, but that's hardly a "third sake cup shadow indicating Sabo" level of "Oda definitely was being sneaky here" situation. I'd feel more strongly if they were alluded to much earlier, similar to how Pudding was shown off years in advance.
Design wise, it seems like the horns are real (they were underneath the mask and multicolored) , she's very tall, she's got a little hair twirl at the top, and I think the hair fading from one color to the next is neat and fairly unique. Not unprecedented, Jinbe had the same thing going on when he was younger, and I feel like Ulti's hair stripes are a bit more unique I think. Oda put some thought into this design, but not a crazy ammount.
But oh man the Nami face is strong on this one. The eyes are different but... its very Nami. A stronger jawline or some cheekbones or something would make a difference, its definitely no Robin level of decisive facial distinctness.
So between the strong Nami face and the heavy Wano ties, I'm not riding this particular hype train, but its the most potential we've had in a character in a while. Devil fruit could obviously make a big difference. Strong secondary character to be sure, convenient to speed up the arc, not screaming nakama to me just yet.
If her main hair color ends up being white, purple, or red, that'll add some points though.

I think Yamatos role and future in the story will become clearer once we hear whatever announcement kaido will make that regards her.

This seems to confirm what I've been saying for a while. Oda has actually changed the existing Strawhat colors just enough in the past few hundred chapters. Take a look at this color spread from Ch. 872. Except from Brook because of him being Black&White and Zoro's color being more of an olive green than a lime green, the colors of the rainbow are an exact match as the rest of the Strawhats colors.
But if you take a look below, some of their colors have actually shifted overtime. Sanji's blue is much lighter than the darker navy blue he was originally depicted with. Robin's purple is noticeably more redder in tone than her original bluish-purple. It seems that Oda has been "making room" for more Strawhat colors.
I personally believe though that Jinbe might not be the missing turquoise or dark blue/violet color. Given that Vivi is "White Gold" I think that opens the door to metallic colors. Gold would make sense for Jinbe given that he was a member and later captain of the Sun Pirates.
This is just my own irrelevant preference but even if we ignore the Namiface, Yamato is too tall for my liking after like 4 giant nakama in a row (relatively in Robin's case since she's way above average for a female). Need some more manlet/womanlet representation :sad:

I'm not even sure Oda had the idea of a Kaido's son when he started Wano. But that is just my impression.

I'm thankful the WCI and Wano has made the One Piece anime more colorful it seems like it lost some in the transition to the Timeskip.
