I dunno, the trailers for the DnD film looked good. Expecting a fun movie, albeit maybe not mind blowing.
Not all movies need to be mind-blowing. Sometimes they just need to be fun. The MCU has shown a lot of that.

The true test will be if the audience likes it and makes money
D&D Honor Among Thieves was a fun film. It slides more on funny than trying to be a serious epic. The characters were charming. Could follow the plot generally well. Don’t play D&D but know enough about that type of area to be able to follow along. Hope it does well in cinemas.
A solid 90% on the Tomatometer:

"An infectiously good-spirited comedy with a solid emotional core." Really couldn't ask more than that out of a D&D movie, could we?
I've been meaning to try D&D for years now (done one table-top, but it wasn't D&D), but it's hard to find a good group you trust. Especially as a woman.
Finally saw The Whale.
Yeah, okay, Brendan Fraser definitely deserved the Oscar. And the rest of the movie's damn good too.
And while Hong Chau was good, I think, if anyone, Sadie Sink deserved the Best Supporting Actress nom.
Omg it's so dumb. And what is Barbie if not dumb?
It looks hilarious. Kudos to Margot Robbie and even Ryan Gosling. (I didn't know Simu Liu was in this!)
@Satsuki Incidentally, the movie is directed by Greta Gerwig who also directed Ladybird and the most recent Little Women adaptation. So yeah, I think the movie's in good hands.
I saw. It's only proper that a Barbie movie is directed by a woman. Who probably played with Barbies. (not that some little boys did too)
I was convinced that they'd be doing something interesting after the 2001 trailer.
Also its entirely possible the entire trailer is from the first 15 minutes of the movie and they do a fish out of water thing once they hit "Real World."
Given the director and the sheer amount of talent on board there's gotta be something there despite the branding. It might be a Lego Movie situation.
2001 trailer?
And wouldn't it be brilliant if it was another Lego Movie.
First Barbie trailer parodied 2001 a Space Odyssey.
Also think there’s plenty being hidden from the premise. Think Barbie world is the first 3rd, going to the real world and going bananas.
I see Will Ferrell looking like some CEO guy, so hints as to where that's going.
Calling it now: Will's character used to be a Ken then got exiled to the real world and turned ruthless in business. And that every Barbie accessory in this is actually made of plastic.

The first trailer from a few months ago.
Movie looks fun! With a packed cast at that (Margot is a perfect Barbie pick but admitedly Ryan Gosling was not the first person in my mind for Ken, dunno why)
I don't think many people would have chosen Ryan Gosling for Ken, but it looks like he's doing a great job.
What's better than super-powered circus freaks fighting the Nazis?

Weird shit you're smoking, Italy.
They could've left it as "Freaks Out", but wathever. It's not a meme movie, btw. It has some outrageous stuff, but it's also serious. At times, even a bit mean spirited. Kind of like a f*cked up Xmen.
Honestly? I recommend it. I liked it, a lot.
Simu Liu learns of the sacrifices one must make to play Ken:

Put Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy together and you know it's going to be a good movie. Albeit a very heavy movie.
Kudos to Nolan for also apparently going to do the Trinity test scene without relying on CGI.
I somehow missed that Hellboy was getting another reboot (sigh), but apparently Mike Migola approves?
https://movieweb.com/hellboy-the-crooked-wraps-filming/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_campaign=EchoBox-MW&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1naym_CeAaMgtGenAi56vbUjzp9fd7splhQfpGhyZyiESj0E1KAgMPxRU#Echobox=1684148450
It helps when the movie being made is actually based on one of the stories you wrote.
Wait, didn't Mignola green-lighted the other 2 adaptations as well? I was under the impression that he was, at the time, excited about them too.
He did, but he's letting people know he's approving of the second reboot too. Especially because it's using one of his original stories.
Hmmm, doesn't scare me. And I'm easy to scare:
@Satsuki same problem with the pope’s exorcists, I went to see it hoping there would be at least some scares, and I’m terrified of demon possession movies (despite not being religious or even believing in demons at all) but for a horror movie, there was not even a single scary moment in the entire movie! That’s unacceptable for a horror movie, also to add insult to injury they basically absolve the church of the inquisitions, they say it was a demon possessing the Pope’s right hand man at the time, so yeah apparently all the horrific evil stuff they did wasn’t really them, I’m sorry but that’s just unacceptable
Also they set up like an avengers/shield sort of organization at the end which is just ridiculous
Yeah, I may actually have to see this.
FLAT FEET!!!!
But yeah, this looks to have more depth than one could expect. Mattel must be giggling their asses off at the future income they are going to get from this free marketing. Although . . . . Will Ferrel looks like he's the CEO of Mattel itself in the movie.
Yeah I'm legit excited for the Barbiie movie of all things. What the hell.

He doesn't speak ill of the adaptations, but the first two were a lot more Del Toro than Mignola.
Unfortunately those first two are what audiences fell in love with and wanted a trilogy capper on. If they had at least finished it off everyone would be more on board for the reboots but it left off at an explicit cliffhanger.
It's been 15 years now and the cast has aged past the roles (even with heavy makeup Pearlman is probably too old for it) and its never gonna happen but still.
Greta Gerwig apparently said that the movie's themes are inspired by Reviving Ophelia, a non-fiction book from the 90s that discussed societal pressures on adolescent girls. Appropriate, yes?
Oh, and Dua Lipa released the first single from the soundtrack (she plays the Mermaid Barbie).
oh, I see. thanks for the explanation, people.
Barbie movie has everything to thrive, I'm declining new info until it's launch. OST is going to be hyperpop as f*ck, and even Tame Impale is rumored to be in it. I'm excited. Oppenhaimer who?
welp, Dua Lipa still had some Future Nostalgia fever to unsleash. I'm a bit tired of it by now, though.
Fun fact: Jon Cena is playing one of the Kens too. LOL.
Went to go see The Blackening over the weekend. I'm not usually a horror movie person, but this was more like a horror comedy and was a lot of fun! The characters were pretty engaging, there were tons of laugh-out-loud moments as well as genuine suspense, and definitely a good amount of lampshading and parodying horror movie tropes. If anyone's looking for something to see at the cinema, would recommend!
I again somehow missed that Wes Anderson has a new movie out. The man finally got Tom Hanks:
74% on the tomatometer. Which means it's a good, not necessarily great, Wes Anderson movie. Likely won't get him any new fans, but the ones he has are happy.
The new Indiana Jones movie was fine. No big surprises. Harrison Ford is old and it shows.
Anyway, we're about halfway through the year now and I've managed to see ten of the movies released so far this year (huh, thought it was more). Here's how I'd rank them.
He's only Ken.
Hmm, okay. I suppose I'm intrigued.
I liked Thimoty in Dune but they are overusing him. He has not the charisma needed for the role, imo.
Not everybody can play a young Gene Wilder. The task is immense.
That said, I'm nothing hating him, and the rest of the movie seems to have a bit of, dare I say, "whimsy" in it. Never expected Hugh Grant as an Oompaloompa though. But I do see a Mr. Bean playing a priest, so that gives it an automatic plus.
I liked the whimsical tone of the trailer. Do we know if this is supposed to be the prequel story of a specific, already known version of Wonka or a new take on the character? The Oompa-Loompas are clearly designed like the 1971 version, but Timothy looks a lot more like Johnny Depp's version.
I'm going with prequel to the 71 version, since we have the orange Oompa-Loompas and Tim has curly hair. Really the only thing he has in common with Johnny Depp's is he has brown hair and a purple coat.
That and I just saw a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" second where I see the word "Slugworth". So yeah, '71.
There are a million memes out there joking about Barbie and Oppenheimer coming out the same weekend, but Nolan and Cillian Murphy seem pleased by it:
https://movieweb.com/christopher-nolan-cillian-murphy-support-barbie-oppenheimer-competing/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_campaign=EchoBox-MW&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR0DVkYChMGU2F9y1lOidSpEzCeZdvHEB_lnGmzV2Pd5VAfoR384P3iwoD8#Echobox=1689374252
For Nolan, he sees it as a way to fill the theaters again.
The new Mission Impossible movie was cool as hell, but that's to be expected. If you liked the last three, you'll like this one.
Go to Google and search for Ryan Gosling or Margot Robbie.
Haha! Sneaky advertising.
Welp, the reviews for Barbie are lookin good
