Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

Would you have supported an Uncut One Piece dub… with the 4kids cast?

I am doing some random fun stuff to add more life to the anime section. And here is a great question: Would you have supported a 4kids uncut dub with the same cast? Ala 4Kids Uncut Shaman King and Yu Gi Oh?

I would have bought uncut 4Kids DVDs just for the subbed version. I also suspect that, if 4Kids had tried an uncut dub, there would be no second chance with another studio. Hell, One Piece getting "rescued" by Funi after 104 episodes had aired was probably a super rare thing.

I can't remember much of the 4kids dub beyond the Gum-Gum Rap and "Brooklyn" Sanji, so I'm not sure if I would've enjoyed an uncut version, but, like LostTimeLord, I would've picked up the DVD's if they came with subs.

Only if it meant getting a version of We Are from them like this with the same energy but with a more faithful translation of the lyrics.

If you want a super rough idea of how uncut 4Kids OP would sound,

drops the video game dialogue onto the anime scenes.

Why do people keep saying this? There was money to be made with this show. It would be if harmony gold botching dragon ball and no on ever trying again afterward.

This was a possibility at one stage: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interview/2005-04-24/alfred-r-kahn

"Is there a possibility of an uncut release of One Piece?

                      Yes, definitely"

There were 3 volumes of Yu-Gi-Oh and 2 volumes of Shaman King released uncut with an iffy 4Kids re-dub in-cooperation with Funimation. However it probably wasn't profitable enough for Funimation to continue.

In an alternate timeline where these DVD releases turned out to be a huge success (no chance when you consider costs of re-dubbing, royalties, and low exposure to the market) perhaps Funimation would have released an uncut 4Kids dub.

With the cast, maybe. But with the voice directors they used during their run. Nooo.

I'll give the 4Kids dub some credit, some of the little extra lines were actually pretty funny, the accents they give, while possibly a bit cliche, did give the characters some extra flavor (Not all of it worked obviously, Robin for instance) and I actually did like some of the voices (Zoro's and Buggy's in particular, even with that weird reverb of his), hell even Sanji's was growing on me. But it's obvious whomever was directing them wanted the episodes done quick as possible as the cast barely emotes when the time comes. Check any scenes where Luffy gets angry, it feels like he's passive aggressive at best. Some are trying better then others (Nami) and I know English VAs can't really hit the high notes in some of these anime but yeesh some of the shouting in the 4Kids version is embarrassing, there's no weight behind them (Vivi pleading at the end of Alabasta being a major example, that was awful). Did they seriously not have time for re-takes, or was this just the fatigue of owning the liscene and trying to dump it as quickly as possible?

Get nuts or go crazy trying.

                            I dont get this post.

In a version of events where 4Kids made an uncut dub of One Piece of any real length, it would be significantly less likely that Funimation (or anyone else) would re-dub those episodes. You don't generally get multiple English dubs aimed at the same market and re-dubbing would be very expensive compared to using the English dialogue they already had. In the hypothetical situation where 4Kids finishes uncut Alabasta and then goes under, it would make more sense for the new rights holder to hire the same cast (or soundalikes) for Skypiea and continue where they left off.
In other words, if 4Kids' uncut One Piece had happened there would be little hope in waiting for another, better dub to come along.

Yes it's probably best an uncut 4Kids release never happened.

The 4Kids dub was the bottom of the barrel in terms of censorship and straying from the original show (script, music). Funimation saw the opportunity to start fresh, really put the effort in, and differentiate themselves from the failed product (hence the gold logo re-branding).

If the 4Kids dubbed uncut DVD existed, it would be pretty close to what Funimation intended (other than voices and royalty expenses). The 4Kids uncut DVDs would have bombed, and then the One Piece anime wouldn't have seemed lucrative and profitable from any angle in the west. I don't see how Funimation or any company would continue pursuing it.

Detective Conan 'Case Closed' is a great example.

Tangentially related, but I remember way back in the day when Duval's face was revealed and someone said they should have David Moo play him… To this day that feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. While I am generally of the opinion that hackjob translations that utterly misrepresent the source material should just be buried and never looked back on save as maybe a thing to point and laugh at, that would have been an amusing callback for anyone who knew of the 4Kids dub while not really taking anyone not in-the-know out of the experience.

…Oh and as for the original question: It would be far from ideal, but had we lived in a world where that happened I would probably have accepted it. At least as long as the hypothetical uncut DVD release also came with proper subtitles. 's sort of similar to how I currently feel about the dub of Pokémon; While I have gripes about the voice acting, my main problem with it is that it keeps changing stuff just for the sake of changing stuff (or, in the case of the music, for the sake of TPCi getting more royalties...) and if the dub would just stop changing the music, renaming characters whose names were already English, making every single episode title a pop culture reference and making Team Rocket non-stop pun-machines, I would consider it an acceptable product. Bad performances can be annoying. Straight-up altering the text to say something entirely different than intended is a death sentence.

Team Rocket aren't non stop pun machines in Japanese?!

The David Moo as Duval thing woulda had me in stitches. Maybe Toei wouldnt let them. We know Funimation isnt above gag voices like that, they hired the original dub of Vegeta to voice a clone of his in 2 DBS filler eps. But Toei also stepped in and wouldnt let them use the Team Four Star (DBZ Abridged) voices for the in-universe Cell Games movie.

But to answer the original question, no I wouldn't have. Their releases would have been no more than 5 eps a disk. Never mind that I still would hate almost all of the voices outside of Zoro. Oh yeah, he'd still be Zolo.

! total aside, but I did own one of the Ps2 chibi fighter games that came out under 4kids' reign and there was a single line of dialogue Robin had where she would say "you're bad" and holy shit if that didnt sound sexy as hell , completely removed from the character.

Nope. I mean, they still do make a fair amount of puns, but in the English version basically every word out of their mouths is either a pun or a rhyme. In Japanese they… actually speak like normal people most of the time.

Nah, I don't think Toei would take issue with it. With TFS, the problem would have been that their abridged series was infringing Toei's copyright.
