This is the intended end goal of repeatedly calling us "Groomers" and insisting we are pedophiles trying to corrupt peoples' children.
The goal is to make it palatable for a mainstream audience to call for shit like this. They clearly think they've hit the point where the public at large is willing to accept it.

Make sure you fill out the application on that website if you haven't already. Technically the deadline was a few months ago but they're accepting more up until about November since a lot of people weren't aware of this program.
@Ubiq It can apparently take up to 3 days for my info to be confirmed with the SSA system so I'm gonna make sure to do this Monday.
But I'm 100% on top of it.
@MetaMario why would they keep it n the quiet? The been advocating for Biblestan since the 80s, every decade their base on "American Jewish-Christian Values and Morals" grows and grows.
Trump administration proved that they can say whatever outrageous shit and would still have 50M voters supporting them.
Well, we already put the Japanese in camps . . .
Both the White House AND Biden are pulling a "this you?" on all the Republican reps bitching about the forgiven loans:

I still have to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn't imagining this loan forgiveness. Like of course 10k <<< all of it, but any little bit helps. Buuut am I crazy/paranoid to worry that if the Republicans gain more ground in November/2024, they'll do anything to undo this?
is there some kind of "no takebacks" clause i can read?
Every little bit helps. It makes the end one day sooner. Reminds me of the day when I went practically skipping to the bank to pay my last loan check for my car.
I feel like they would, I just don't know how long it would take. What needs to happen is to get it done as soon as possible.
@MetaMario said in American Politics: A Brand New Day:

The focus has primarily been on the 10K amount but there's a ton of stuff that people keep neglecting that helps a lot of people.
If you have Pell Grants, it's $20K rather than 10K.
So long as you make a minimum monthly payment, no interest will be added.
*The minimum monthly payment is calculated based on your income and caps at 5% of monthly income.
*It's entirely possible to have a monthly minimum payment of $0. So you can pay nothing and still not accrue interest.
If you made payments during the pandemic or recently paid off your loans, you might be able to apply for a refund and then get the amount forgiven.
The period of public service time you need before the loans can be forgiven has been cut in half and they'll count periods of forbearance towards the required payments.
Plus there's more that I won't go into right now.

Interesting; I did just that simply because I feared the interest freeze wouldn't last. In hindsight I'm glad I did because the potential $10K (i forget if I have pell grants so maybe 20K??) would bring me close to just a last-time pay-it-all off.

I've been thinking this exact same thing for a while now. This is exactly the playbook that has been used to dehumanize groups of people time and time again. It has led to atrocities and even genocide.
I want people to realize how seriously dangerous this "groomer" narrative that the right has been spreading recently is.
Notice how the right is also working to whitewash history in schools so kids grow up not being aware of atrocities.
It can not be overstated how much danger we are in if we don't get the right out of power.
I've seen a narrative spread by the news that the student loan forgiveness is actually going to hurt Biden more than help him.
JFC, the people of this country are so ridiculous.
(Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saying "this isn't enough, more needs to be done" but that doesn't change the fact that he did something, and that it is good)
Meanwhile real groomers like John K. and Dan Schneider get none of that hate from the right.
To paraphrase of free translation Nelson Rodrigues;" Behind every moral paladin hides a scumbag."
They're definitely trying to dehumanize us. It's really fucked up to think that so few people are condemning conservatives for their actions in trying to legislate us out of existence.
@JulieYBM Well very few try to denounce the right, even if the majority of their arguments are paper thin and on based purple prose "intellectuals". Because the most likely outcome is it falling in deaf ears and facing a harassment campaign.

Yup. Republicanism at this point is pure projection. They don't really stand for anything at all other than destroying their "enemies". Which are NOT predators, but instead just everyday non-Christian people, everyday non-white people, everyday LGBT people, everyday women, everyday people that are different from their expected norm.
They could not care less about groomers or predators. They do not care about the safety of women or children. What they really care about is bringing down "undesirable" groups of people that challenge their privilege and they will leverage the ignorance and natural in-grouping of humanity that allow their fabricated false, harmful narratives to spread like wildfire through the populace.
It's just weaponization. This is why no one should be surprised when, say, they elect Donald Trump, a proud sexual assaulter, to the president's office (and straight-up worship him!), or they keep Matt Gaetz around.
The predators they're going after are imaginary predators. The real predators they protect within their ranks.
I know that is rather cynical. I don't know if this is entirely conscious on their part, but it sure is playing out this way either way. There are predators on every side of the aisle, every group of people, but JFC, the groups that seem to be the most likely to protect their own predators are right wing politicians and right-wing churches. It's disgusting. They must be held accountable for this.

Like, I'm serious in that if you vote for them and know what they are about, I think you're a bad person. Sorry.
@Johnny-B-Decent define modern, because:
The GOP started flirting with proto-Fascism back in 1994 with the Gringrich crowd and made a hard turn into it in 2010 with the Tea Party. Even before that though, they made hardcore appeals to racism back in the late '60s and '80s with Reagan.
So, yeah, they've been awful for over half a century now
FDR scared them bad so they turned to fascism and haven't looked back since. Of course, knowingly indulging in fiscal conservatism is also fascism of its own, so they were pretty much always evil.

Today's What the Fuck Just Happened Today: https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2022/08/29/day-587/
Day 587: "A lot of classified records."
1/ The Justice Department identified "a limited set" of documents seized from Mar-a-Lago that are potentially covered by attorney-client privilege. The disclosure that a Justice Department "filter team" had completed its review of documents taken from Mar-a-Lago came as Trump's lawyers pressed a federal judge two weeks after the Aug. 8 search to appoint a special master to review the documents. The filter team is separate from the team involved in the criminal investigation and "is in the process of following the procedures" spelled out in the search warrant to handle any privilege disputes. (New York Times / Washington Post / ABC News / Bloomberg / CNN / NPR / Associated Press)
2/ A heavily redacted copy of the FBI affidavit used to justify the search of Mar-a-Lago revealed that 14 of the 15 boxes Trump returned in January contained 184 documents with classification markings, including 25 marked "top secret," 92 marked "secret," and 67 marked "confidential." Several of the documents contained Trump's "handwritten notes," some were related to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and not meant to be shared with foreign nations, and others refer to the systems used to protect intelligence gathered from secret human sources. The National Archives referred the matter to the Justice Department on Feb. 9 after finding what they described as "a lot of classified records." The Justice Department wrote in its request for the search that there is "probable cause to believe that evidence of obstruction will be found" at Trump's house. (Washington Post / Politico / NBC News / Associated Press / Axios / New York Times)
3/ The U.S. intelligence community will conduct a damage assessment of the possible risks to national security stemming from Trump's handling of the top-secret documents stored at Mar-a-Lago. In the letter to the House Intelligence and Oversight Committees, Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, informed the lawmakers that her office would lead an "assessment of the potential risk to national security that would result from the disclosure of the relevant documents." Haines added that the DNI and Justice Department are "working together to facilitate a classification review of relevant materials, including those recovered during the search." (Politico / New York Times / NBC News / CNN)
4/ A judge ruled that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp must testify in the grand jury investigating Trump's effort to overturn the 2020 election. Judge Robert McBurney, however, agreed to delay that testimony until after the Nov. 8 election. Kemp is running for reelection against Democrat Stacey Abrams. (NBC News / Politico / Axios / New York Times / Washington Post / Associated Press)
5/ The Biden administration will end its free at-home Covid-19 test program this week due to a lack of funding. Officials said they want to preserve supply ahead of an anticipated fall surge in cases. (NPR / NBC News / CNN)

I believe there's usually a grandfather clause that covers these situations. You can't get in trouble for having the thing that was banned if your had it before it got banned. For instance, I recall hearing during Prohibition people were able to keep the liquor they already had, they just couldn't get more.
@sgamer82 very interesting
@sgamer82
Well, the trick with Prohibition was that, while it was illegal to manufacture, sell, and transport alcohol, it technically wasn't illegal to buy, own, or even consume it.
But yes, in the event the US does pass any assault weapon bans (har har) I would assume a grandfather clause would protect people who already own them.

Even if Biden did get a law like that passed, I would worry for his (and other people's) safety, as the gun nuts might go crazy and start shooting/assassinating people. Because they don't want their guns taken away; as I'm guessing most don't know about grandfather clauses or the like.
And much like Prohibition, I could see this leading to something of a black market for guns. Hell, that's where most criminals in Japan get their guns due to their super strict (and wonderful) gun laws.
@Satsuki a black market for guns? Preposterous. Who could make a buck on it? wink wink nudge nudge Military Industrial Complex

Biden defends FBI, promotes ban on assault-style weapons

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — President Joe Biden on Tuesday forcefully defended the FBI as the agency and its employees have come under withering criticism and threats of violence since executing a search warrant at former President Donald Trump's Florida residence earlier this month.

Day 588: "The minimal solution."
1/ Weather models are warning of a "very dangerous" and "prolonged heat wave" over western states this week and into the Labor Day weekend. More than 55 million people are currently under heat alerts in the west, including 20 of the most populated cities. More than 100 records could be broken. "We will very likely be in the midst of a full-fledged and potentially dangerous heat wave by midweek," the National Weather Service in Los Angeles said. 2/ The Education Department will discharge another $1.5 billion in student debt for students who enrolled in Westwood College. The Education Department found that 79,000 borrowers who attended Westwood College, a private, for-profit institution that closed in 2016, were "routinely misled" about their job prospects and expected earnings after graduation. The forgiveness will happen automatically, regardless of whether former students have applied for a borrower defense discharge, the Education Department said. (The Hill / CNBC / CBS News)

3/ The Labor Department reported that there were 11.2 million job openings in July – up from the previous month's 11 million and in excess of the 10.3 million estimated. 5/ Trump demanded that the 2020 presidential election be declared "irreparably compromised" and that a new one be held "immediately!" after news that Facebook temporarily limited a controversial story about Hunter Biden's laptop in users' news feeds before the 2020 election. Trump was responding to comments from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg made on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast that the FBI had warned Facebook to be on the lookout for potential Russian misinformation on the platform. Nevertheless, the twice-impeached ex-president posted to his social media app, which is currently banned from the Google Play Store because of insufficient content moderation, that he should be declared the winner of the election that was decided two years ago, saying "this would be the minimal solution, declare the 2020 Election irreparably compromised and have a new Election, immediately!" Good: Democrats won another House special election.
Better: It was in Alaska.
Even Better: The loser was Sarah Palin.
Best: The new Representative is Mary Peltola, the first Alaska Native person to serve and first woman to represent the state in Congress.
Alaska's a bit idiosyncratic and Palin is Palin so I don't know how much this win can be extended to the nation as a whole, but it's hardly a bad sign. Peltola won in Alaska's first ranked-choice election over both Palin and a moderate Republican, and will face them again in the regular election this fall.

Most of the sentences have been light due to being from plea deals. The longest other one I know offhand was Guy Reffit, who got 7 years. I think they were aiming for 14/15 but the judge denied a factor that would have allowed for that enhancement on the sentence.
Overall, the jury convictions have been stiffer, and we aren't at the big fish, the militia guys accused of actual sedition.
Lightest non-plea deal sentence came from a bench trial (no jury, decided by judge) held before a specific judge, McFadden. I forget the specific sentence but it was the only one to see even a partial acquittal.
