Naruto Thread XII: This really has to be the final Naruto thread, right?

Well, it took a few years to get through Naruto thread XI… almost a decade really... a far cry from the days when a Naruto thread would only last a few months... but at last we're on Naruto Thread XII!

Which at this point is actually Boruto, but who is keeping track? If this paces anything like the previous thread, this one should last until One Piece finishes in "five years". We'll see how that works out.

That is INCREDIBLY common with authors that have one big hit then try to do something else. Its VERY rare you get a Toriyama, Takehashi or Inoue that manage more than one big hit, so thats not really a mark against Kishi at all.

Many times their failed projects ends up leading them back to doing a spinoff of their original hit. Shaman King and Battle Angel in particular comes to mind.

He's been pretty explicit OP is going to be his life's work and there's nothing big after it, and thats why he's cramming everything into it now (like robots, gangster, and samurai stuff.) After OP is done I think he mostly is too.

He'll probably go the Toriyama route and just do random 10 chapter things every couple of years when he has an idea, something the anime studios can get excited about and do a season of. Maybe do some video game designs, work on a movie. With his success he can do anything he wants. But he's almost certainly never going to do a long-term serial again. Well, he can't help himself so maybe 2-5 volume outings. Definitely nothing else approaching the planned scope OP had.

I'm sure he wants a break and to retire, but he's such a passionate artist I also can't see him staying on break for too long once he's recharged.

I don't think he has it in him to be Takehashi and just jump into another new long series every ten years.

Yeah, I can also see Oda doing short stories about side characters in the OP world, conmemorative illustrations and original designs for video games/movies. And now that I think about it, isn't it strange that Kishimoto is doing none of that? Is he fed up with Naruto in general or what? I feel like in this case it is a mark against Kishi.
Not trying to make it personal but there's a distinction between the really good writers and the not so good ones or the ones that coasted along due to early popularity.

And that's really just Kishi in his last few years of Naruto.
JUMP even made a deliberate effort to help keep his Hachi story in longer.
He's.. just not that good.
The trait that successful authors who came back for a second round is that they always know what they are doing and their previous series have zero to very little leaks/flaws in terms of like, everything.
Dr Slump, Slam Dunk, Yu Yu Hakusho holds well even to this day..and you can't really say that about Naruto.
In recent years I can remember Beelzebub, now Beelzebub is a great series but was shaky as hell during its last few arcs.
So I could see how Hungry Marie didn't last.
And Kuroko Basket had style over substance towards its end which means Robot lasting that long was both a surprise and it ending wasn't.

Well basically this post is just to say there are the legends…and there's everyone else.

An easy case study to look at will be Kubo's BOTW, if it runs like weekly it will die off before it gets a year.
And I'm willing to bet the same for Shokugeki and TPN's new works.

Funny enough, for me it was basically late shippuuden Naruto in space, mixing sci-fi technology with samurai, instead of ninjas. Similar character types, similar designs, similar themes, similar inspirations, similar powers… (similar lack of quality in general :ninja:)

I gave up reading Samurai 8 around 20 chapters in as it got boring and the art wasn't great. There were a few great chapters in that mix, but it became more of a chore after a while. I heard the ending was great, though, but I think it needed to go through the submission and revision process more than it did. It also seems that Japenese fans saw it as being shoved down their throats and resented it quite a bit.

I think the best character that appeared after the Pain arc was that Cloud Ninja guy who would always imagine the worst outcome of any situation he would be in.

Burn the witch would be an ideal project for so many authors. Serialized story, but like 4 chapters every 3-5 months? Maybe even Kubo can write something cohesive like that.

It's not just a manga authors thing either, plenty of authors/directors can only do one big series and the rest of them fail to live up to there old series standard

there's very few people who can make a bunch of interesting/successful series, it's usually one big thing and done

It's why I particularly like Brandon Sanderson and Joss Whedon, both can make multiple series that are both amazing and very different from there other stuff, obviously they have some similar themes and messages in there stories sometimes but there's enough variety that it never feels like your getting the same old thing

Hachimaru felt like Kishi was writing a sage book or some kind of life lessons impartion info dump manual.
So much text at some point and characters didn't really feel like their age either.
Execution was flawed, I guess.. I don't know I was jumping around chapters anyway.

I have nothing to say about the Harry Potter series because I haven't read it

Also too many mechanics and "this is <ki>this is how the powers work" I know that the elements thing in naruto came out very late in the story, but was he more interested on desigining a videogame system, or triumph over Nen, than telling the story.</ki>

I think I gave up after chapter 8 or so on Samurai 8. I was annoyed the main guy lost all uniqueness after he got a better body or whatever.

I think the guy was hired to produce an amount of volumes while Kishi was doing the planned 10 volumes of Samurai 8, since his series got axed, he might just wanted to push faster with the transition.
If the series wasn't a train wreck enough already.

While Boruto is certainly not without faults, the author did some things a lot better than Kishi. And I actually found myself wanting to see where it all goes and how. So it's definitely bad news for me.

But on the plus side, if it goes off the rails again, we'll have plenty material for jokes.

Someone commented that there was a twitter outrage towards Kodachi after it became clear the story was taking a certain direction, and that he had what they called a public meltdown. I've no way of knowing if that's true or not.

Some have pointed that out, yes, so there was always that possibility looming. It never sat well with me, I can tell you that. Some stories are so good you can pull off this kind of outcome even with the built in expectations that come with an audience that has bonded with these characters, and this setting, for almost twenty years.

Is Boruto that kind of story? (It’s definitely not)

That's way most of sequels don't bode well with me, most writes go for the easy "and things got worse" due to the characters we know and love screwing up big time and having their kids rise to occasion and save the day, instead of going for the more organic albeit harder legacy story. And that's why I value Batman Beyond greatly even if I haven't watched in ages.

If someone can link me to the meltdown regarding this on twitter or a relevant thread I'll do a rough translate.
I'm pretty sure if Kishi takes over, that character won't die here and will get revived later like the usual tropes so there's really no cause for uproar.
The only issue is probably how cheap and stupid it is done, power levels considered.

The targeted episode wasn't even bad.
As a FGO fan I had no idea and the episode was one I thought added substance and appeal to an otherwise straightforward fillerish game script.

What kind of story are they trying to tell with Boruto? Thematically, Naruto has always been about the strength of the youth — how the next generation would change things.

But what of Boruto’s ambitions? What does he actually want to achieve? Maybe Naruto’s death will help him understand that.

Boruto declared early on he didn't want to be Hokage. Sarada does though. Unfortunately Sasuke is spending time training Boruto over her. I feel that Kishi taking over won't improve the story much. If at all.

This is also why I prefer the episodes focusing more on slice of life stuff. The battles haven't been interesting to me since the Sasuke retrieval arc.

I know that Boruto doesn’t want to be Hokage, but he hasn’t changed much from this bocchan-esque character.

Naruto had ambitions from day one: to become the strongest ninja and gain respect from his community. What goal is Boruto headed towards and why?

Maybe it’s to become his own man and Naruto’s death will facilitate that. I don’t know; I haven’t been watching the show at all — it’s rather uninteresting (but DOES expand upon their world).
