That stings, and it paints a disappointing picture of the release schedule going forward. I was hoping for more of an August thing.
Still, it'll be keep Oda safe, and gives him a chance to build a buffer between the weekly chapters on the volumes, which were catching up fast before this. It'll be a shame vol 98 probably isn't coming out in the 2020 oricon year though. Maybe we'll get all four out in 2021.
Anyway, my vision for the cover has Luffy, Law and Kid, the Tobi Roppo and Apoo, plus the big skull of Onigashima in the background. I've got a layout pictured I might try to illustrate late, but I think that's a good combo of characters to show what's going on without giving too much away. Unless a better title comes along in the next three chapters I'm betting on "Fighting Music." It's far from dramatic, but leave it to Oda to pick the fun title instead.

If Yamato appears by the end of the volume, I could see the title being 'Family Problem'
I could also see 'The Party's Off' or 'Joining the Fight' as the title; The latter is really generic, but Oda chose some of the most generic chapter titles for volume titles during Dressrosa like 'Just Keep Going', 'Repaying the Debt', and 'Ever At Your Side'; Volume titles have been better since then I think.
'The Party's Off' might work if only because they're raiding the Fire Festival so it might have a double meaning when applied to the volume as a whole.

Unrelated, but it would be dope to open up 2021 with 2 chapters in 1 issue, 999 and 1000. Might just get the cover and a colorspread tho. Maybe an interview as well

- Can't be Tobi Roppo, that would mess up the reveal

Here's my prediction/fanart cover, going on the assumption that "Fighting Music" will be the title.
One Piece logo goes behind Apoo's hands but in front of Onigashima, making it look like the horns are coming out the sides. It'll probably need to be transparent like it was in volumes 70, 83, 88 and a few others for a good look.
Might eventually scan this so I can add the logo properly myself and fix up some of the bits that pain me like Luffy's janky face and Law's tiny head, but for now I think it gets the key ideas of the cover across.

Turns out I couldn't get my hands on a scanner at the minute, but I cleaned the photo version as best I could. Quality isn't spectacular, but it's more about illustrating the concept and layout than it is creating good art, so I'm not that bothered by it.

I wonder how long till we get a cover with Kaido and his crew? We had one for Barouqe Works, CP9, Doflamingo pirates and Big Mom's pirates, the only covers without Luffy on them
I assume we'll get one with Kaido's crew soon, followed by a cover with the straw hats and there allies (just like what happened in the next volumes after the ones I just mentioned)

I mentioned this in the 23rd anniversary thread too, but check out the silhouette for the new figure line.
It's got just the right proportions to fit under the series logo on a volume cover, and it was announced alongside a set of figures recreating the volume 91 cover. I think there's an nonzero chance these new figures could be based on the new volume cover. If it's true, we should have the cover revealed on Wednesday. No guarantees, of course, I'm just guessing at everything here, but I think it's definitely a possibility.

You can actually see Brook's afro (with ghost arrow) on left fo Kaidou, a plume coat under him, the usual hand position of Sanji, Luffy on front of all of them, Zoro on his right, a flame which could be Brook's spirit (too low to be King), a strange form which could be Franky's Wano hairstyle. I do not say this is not the new cover, but it looks a bit off to me and - at least - it would be a Kaido + SHP cover, w/o Roppo and Calamities.

So 10 or 11 chapters? Both "My Bible" and "New Onigashima Project" could end the volume.

I'm sticking with my 10 chapter bet. New Onigashima is bigger in terms of plot, but we know Oda loves to have a really climactic, keep-you-hooked-for-the-next-one final page, and the Yamato reveal fits the bill far better than Him and Luffy just running.
Also, 10 chapters here means volume 98 is that much closer, and I'm sure the marketing people will be keen on a few quick releases after this volume was delayed so much from the usual schedule. I'm sure they wouldn't get the final say in it, but it's hard to believe that kind of thing wouldn't be considered at all.

I didn't love the last 2 covers and since it releases in September, the reveal of the cover has to be near. I hope the cover is gorgeous.
I stick to the Tobi Roppo possibly not making the cover because it feels like too much of a spoiler. I think the Scabbards make it. They have been the focus since the flashback, even tho Yamato and the Tobi Roppo took over. Maybe Onigashima.
I think 985 ends the volume. Kaido finally making that big announcement will suffice

I think it will have 10 chapters. It will be called "Joining the Battle", "Introducing the Tobiroppo" or "Family Problem". Yamato will be in the cover, but in the background (probably showing only "face") and using his mask.

I'm not holding my breath for even masked Yamato. It's not impossible, but only appearing about 20 pages from the end of the book and there being so many other characters in focus through the first half makes me think he'll be saved for the next one.

Yeah Yamato is defo next one, not this one. This one could have a few things. We could get Luffy, Law and Kidd. We could get the Tobi Roppo as well. But I think whatever we get, Jinbei will be on the cover as this is when he returns.

with all the tobbi roppo being introduced, and orochi not dead yet, this would be the perfect volume cover for all the bad guys, beast pirates + orochi, then the next cover could be the alliance + marco + yamato.

Oda throws Shanks onto every cover where he has any appearance in the volume at all, no matter how small. He doesn't care about page count or spoilers. He'll do whatever he feels like doing.

Of course. And there's things like Sniper King on volume 38 even though he doesn't appear til the literal last page of the volume. Vivi also gets that Shanks treatment. And we try to guess a lot of these kinds of things based on precedent but Oda has absolute power to set new precedents and break old ones whenever he wants. My gut feeling still tells me no Yamato, but that's really all it is. And I've been plenty wrong about things like that before.

Considering the mask comes with its own fake hair, the only color we would get from a masked!Yamato would be the clothes. I mean, Oda is not against spoiling things on cover, but assuming the volume's final panel is Yamato's face reveal I think showing the actual appearance on the cover would be too much even for him.
Anyways, I am hoping this will be the "enemies only" cover, so Yamato waiting until 98 would fit what I want.

Honestly, depending on how long it takes to get to the main battles, I can even see it around 100/101/102.

I think it's too early for a enemy cover, too. The Tobi Roppo are only introduced in this volume. Even late arrivals like Katakuri and the second half of CP9 were already introduced when the 'clashing covers' happened. They usually happen when the fights are actually going on. So I think this one will focus more on the Luffy/Kid/Apoo etc, then 98 maybe in the scabbards, 99 will be the Beast Pirates and 100 the SHs. Because it just makes sense to have the cover of 100 be something special.

I'll go full speculation: I have vibes the arc is gonna flow into some greater one around 101-102, so I'll call Wano/Onigashima closed around that.

Considering Act 3 is the tragedy/tragic climax/twist of the story, I could see Volume 98 having the Villain Cover if Act 3 ends in it. But who knows?

My bet is on Luffy, Law, and Kid really big, with either the Akazaya 9 or the Tobbi Roppo in the Foreground/Background. Jimbe or Marco possibly on there

Indeed, vilains and heros covers are closer to the arc finale. The pattern is: villains cover (only covers without Luffy) > heros covers > climax / main battle cover (that is Luffy's main battle) > aftermath / transition to new arc cover. And for sure Wano doesn't have only 4 volumes left.

It's unlikely the volume will be 12 chapters, but 986 would be a pretty great chapter on which to end the volume. It's not entirely unprecedented. Volumes 63, 69, and 77 were all 12 chapters.
