Chapter 893: 36th Daughter of the Charlotte Family - Flampe
-
The last panel reminded me of a boss battle in the Yakuza series. All it needs is Luffy to have a tattoo on his back.
-
Is it still cool to comment “first” on the interwebz?

No…because actually I was. :P
-
Flambe got her just desserts.
-
@S.C.:

rats! Foiled again!
Nice chapter. Kindve surprised K didn’t just kill his sister and the fan club or whatever, instead opting to injure himself. Glad there was no mention of a break too
-
So the list of Charlottes with unnamed devil fruit grew again they includes: Opera, Montdr, Smoothie, Gallete and Flampe

You really thought he'd kill his own sister? It's not even like Flampe found out by accident, he willingly showed his face to her too lol
-

Most of those are simple explanations based on design, minister position and what they showed off.
-
It's kind of.. jarring how quickly Flampe's almost creepy and inappropriate love for her brother turns into cartoonish hatred for very little reason.
I'm also not sure what her overall purpose was, since it looks like she's pretty much out the game. Did he really introduce a whole character for a few chapters just to have Katakuri slightly appreciate Luffy more? I don't get it. -
So Luffy is now first Yonko Commander level, huh? xD
A chapter full of Katakuri is just over my critics, the only and lasting thing that Oda keeps good in this crappy arc.
Satisfied.

Did he really introduce a whole character for a few chapters just to have Katakuri slightly appreciate Luffy more? I don't get it.It helps cement how much Katakuri is revered by his family without knowing his true self, which will make their reaction more impactful once they see him publicly knocked on his back. Brûlée did a bit of that, but Flambe helped affirm it a lot more.
-
It also shows how the family itself isn't to nice to each other, imagine what they did to Pudding.
-
Getting hyped for the next chapters of this battle.
Btw, I really hope that Luffy gets another permanent scar from that battle.
-
Fuck Flampe.
Kind of feels like she got off way to easy for that crap.
Like seriously spitting in the face of the second son, sweet commander AND strongest fighter you have that isn't Big Mom? What kind of dumbass is she?
Also, if it wasn't before, Katakuri confirmed as Conqueror user as well.
-
I was surprised to see how Flampe became disillusioned with Katakuri in this chapter - I had thought she wouldn't have started hating him until Luffy forced him on his back/defeated them. But regardless, it was a really cool character moment for Katakuri even if the fight didn't advance all that much. I had wondered how he was going to deal with Flampe and the way he did was pretty much perfect. And at least his flashback doesn't feel as shoehorned in for a sudden turnaround as Pudding's did. I haven't felt as gut-punched by a chapter since the Merienda one probably.
-
That was a brutal self stab
-
The chapter made me cry. He was so pissed that Luffy didn't dodge that attack, he's beginning to look like a big brother lol. Poor Katakuri, he finally found someone equal to him and Flambe almost mess it up. Both of them talking about the future was kind of creepy. I think Katakuri will change his mode of engagement from this point, and Luffy will not be happy about it either. For some reason, it seems liek I've seen that scene before. I can't remember how it ends. If Katakuri should lose, he will not feel bad about it one bit.
-
Also, it seems like Luffy can see into the future now, given his declaration of Flampe going down and Katakuri stating that he is an equal.
-
-
okay, Katakuri knocking out Flambe via conquerors Haki was pretty cool. But Flambe was pretty jarring anyway. But I guess that was her point.
Also nice correction there by naming that chapter "36th daughter"
-
Is this the first time a villain has ever acknowledged Luffy as someone on their level?
Loved the chapter.
-
Why does it feel like I'm watching Luffy vs Zoro ?

Did he ? I thought it was Luffy
Or maybe they both saw what the other was gonna do and they used conqueror's haki on the charlotte pirates

To be honest, I'm not too fond of this turn of events. There had been a hint of brotherly I-want-to-see-you grow attitude in Katakuri's behaviour and I get that Luffy is apparently one very few opponents to ever have earned his respect in battle, but as a whole it's too much of a turnaround for me. Whatever happened to "I have to kill you before you become a peril to Mama" or "I must get rid of you before your haki surpasses mine" ? Katakuri had been acting rather pragmatic until now, so the honorable enemy trope doesn't quite fit the mental picture I had formed.
Also, why is their Conqueror Haki clashing only now after hours of battle and, hell, why is it again used for something as trivial as getting rid of a bunch of mooks ?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

I too thought it was Luffy at first, but seeing how there's a haki bubble thingie around each of them I'd say the Conqueror KO is either a move they both willingly did or a side-effect of their clash.

Look around you and just look at how quick people turn when the slightest things puts them off. Fan boys and fan girls aint no good to no body.
Jarring. Ugh. Folks need to find a new word, look up some synonyms for corn sakes!
-
This fight has echoes of Franky vs Senor Pink. I guess Katakuri is pretty "hard boiled".
-
That Flampe took way too much panel space.

The bubble text came from Luffy's side, and Flambe says the monkey has CH before fainting so…
-
It kind of makes me wonder who pushed Katakuri to the limit that he developed such badass haki. Maybe big mom herself during one of her past food rage?

Pretty much. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that.

It's nothing like that fight though, this one is much deeper.
-
What was the point? That´s super weird. I mean I kind of get why Kata did what he did, but it´s incredibly stupid. Also how come an OP Observation character didn´t notice his family member & co. shooting at his oponent?
He basically handed the win to Luffy just now. The fight lost its dynamic.
Luffy quoting Crocodile regarding pirate duels was great though.
EDIT: I really don´t like Katakuri, he´s in the same boat as Cracker who got defeated, a rather unimportant character in the grand scale of things, so giving him more "personality" feels like forced meaningfullness.
And another chapter where nothing moves forward we just got more exposition of yet another crazy stupid BM child.
That Flampe took way too much panel space.
This. Just seeing the chapter title made me read it annoyed.

he has been obsessed with perfection and living up to everyone expectations,so much so that he decided to never lie down, cover his mouth and put up n ultra stoic persona until he can "unravel" during his merienda.
Now katakuri does not care anymore about that stuff,so much so that he willingly showed his mouth and didn't care about photos being taken (meanwhile last time he killed the guys who watched his true self)@Shobu:

the "i have to kill you before you become a peril to mama" it' still in efect,it's not like from now on is gonna treat luffy with gloves.
and the part about "i have to kill you before you reach my level" went out of the window when a third party influenced the duel. katakuri is a guy that thinks even lying down on the ground is shameful, do you really thought he was ok with flampè helping him? Also, why is their Conqueror Haki clashing only now after hours of battle and, hell, why is it again used for something as trivial as getting rid of a bunch of mooks ?
because it's really fast?
it's not like haoshoku does anything other than getting rid of small fishes, o he had no reason to use it against luffy, and same goes for luffy -
With Katakuri injuring himself so as to have no advantage over Luffy, this fight had an interesting turn.
Suddenly, Luffy's victory doesn't feel "right" anymore.
It would make sense if it ended in a draw, with both of them fighting up to total exhaustion. -

There's another way of looking at it. Maybe it's not Oda giving Katakuri depth for the sake of depth itself, but Oda laying in the groundwork for a future ally. Nobody can say whether Katakuri is an unimportant character in the grand scale. Certainly not in a manga like One Piece, where we've seen past villains becoming allies on multiple occasions. What I'm saying is, there's probably a good reason why Katakuri is having a small character arc of his own inside this arc.
Big Mom will probably fall, she has to eventually, but that doesn't mean the entirety of her kingdom will suddenly cease to exist. So, I'm counting on Katakuri to fight on Luffy's side in the end.

so luffy's eventual win didn't feel right before and continues to do so…if oda really wants for luffy to have a clear win over katakuri, a lot of stuff must happen still for it to feel "right"

yeah, i remember when people were complaining that the guys in the dressrosa colosseum were given such defined personalities and many pages dedicated just to them, saying that they were meaningless characters that didn't need to be characterised..ignoring that oda was obviously building them for something else
also, even if it's not the case, it's still world building
-
So we get two developments in this. Katakuri putting aside his appearance as the perfect brother and son in the Big Mom pirates in acknowledgement of his opponent. We also get another chink in the armor of how Big Mom sees her pirate crew and Tottoland in general. This place is dystopian, with all of the brothers and sisters loving and supporting each other and discrimination being eradicated, yet the deeper look shows it to not be the case. I think just like with Pudding, we can expect Katakuri to be an ally in the future. When the Straw Hats come, people and places inevitably change inward and outwardly. This is good shit.
Also, the idea that Katakuri shouldn't be developed because he's a one off villain here and not even a Yonkou? I just don't get it at all. Shouldn't we want developed and interesting villains? Isn't the opposite of this the complaint shouldered against Rob Lucci? Also, doesn't developing the villain help develop the hero as well? Great example is Senor Pink against Franky.

That makes sense but it changes the dynamics of the fight from how can Luffy overcome this extremely strong enemy to "let´s have a fair and friendly brawl, my equal". The suspense was there the last chapter and early on in this one, but it´s gone for me by the end of the chapter.
Luffy earning his respect by actually beating him despite the odds and outside help would feel better than being acknowledged because his oponent found out he got outside help. Well, to be honest, I don´t really care about Kata´s respect, I just want to see Luffy pummel him good.
The whole deal with Flampe is weird considering Observation lets you notice your surroudings yet these two pumped up Observation characters haven´t noticed active spectators a mere 50 meters away until they actually heard them laugh hard?
-

it's not a friendly brawl though
nowhere is said that now katakuri is gonna go on easy on luffy, the terms are still the same, what changed is that katakuri has recognized in luffy a worthy opponent because he managed to improve his observation haki throughout the match so much that he (almost?) reached katakuri's
they were not friends before, they are not friends now..but while before it was man vs child, now it's man vs man.
-
because it's really fast?
it's not like haoshoku does anything other than getting rid of small fishes, o he had no reason to use it against luffy, and same goes for luffyLet me rephrase. If Luffy & Katakuri released a controlled burst of CH just to get rid of Flampe & co, then it's a cool move I can understand. I'm still annoyed that the only use whatsoever of this hype balloon is pyrotechnics and getting rid of mooks, but so be it.
On the other hand, if what we're seeing is one of those conqueror haki clashes that seem to occur as a side effect of two big fishes butting heads (such as Shanks meets Whitebeard, Luffy vs Shinjao or Luffy vs Doflamingo) then why not sooner in their hours-long battle and why are any small fishes in the vicinity still awake? -
Just before we start thinking Katakuri is some sort of honourable man, I doubt that's the case. This is about vanity. He can't have anybody thinking he needed his little sister's help to beat Luffy. It's an extreme way to rectify the situation, but he genuinely believes that Luffy beating him is an impossibility, so why not.
-
What I find interesting about this fight is that there's not really anything at stake for either combatant at this point. With the fate of the Strawhats and Tottoland being decided out at sea, and all the mirrors on the Sunny broken, there's not really any way for Luffy or Katakuri to get out there and help their side win. If Luffy had ended the fight early by running off with Brulee and leaving Katakuri trapped, nothing would change in the cake storyline, and the same if Katakuri had allowed his underlings to help him wear down Luffy. For the first time in a long time there's no island destroying machine attached to the bad guy's willpower, and no threat he'll go and take out the rest of the crew one by one if not stopped. Given the developments in this chapter, I'd be surprised if Katakuri would even be willing to finish the job after he beats Luffy.
So there it is, we've got two absurdly tough dudes slugging it out for the sheer unholy delight of it. In it entirely for the challenge, and a bit for their prides, not because losing will have any tangible consequence. And I think it's been made pretty clear they're both aware of this fact.
And for that reason, I'm not super bothered by Katakuri injuring himself to level the playing field, even if it would normally be cliche arrogant anime character posturing. It's like jumping off the stage deliberately in Smash Bros cos your opponent lost a stock to something like a controller dying or someone walking in front of the screen. Except, you know, Katakuri stabbed himself instead. -

depends if by honorable you mean putting effort to keep his own honor untouched or to be someone that also does the honorable thing in any given situation.
katakuri definitely seems like the guy to fit in the first definition, much less the second one.
-
This was waaaay better than the spoilers made it seem. Not sure how Japan reacted to Katakuri's weird mouth, but it seems to me like Flambe is some form of meta-character, reflecting his fanbase. The fact that she reacted the way she did implies to me that the japanese readers may have been disapointed with that reveal. But nonetheless: Brotakuri for nakama!
-
I guess it actually makes sense he did have Conqueror's haki, since his mother has it also, it should stand to reason of all the 48 children she had, 1 of them would inherit that ability too.
Dam that was really cool….
I've become a total Kakakuri fanboy now. -

katakuri has been te honorable duelist and leveled the battlefield, but this doesn't make it any less of a assassination attempt, he still wants luffy's life.@Strooger:

she really is the meta for any obessing fan that looks up to his/her idol as a perfect being and then gets angry when he/she shows up to just be an human being
remember that in japan idols can't have a boyfriend, at least publicly so, because that would tarnish the "pure image" that the fans have of them.
-
I also freaking loved how Luffy said exactly what Crocodile told him in their duel all the way back in Arabasta. That was neat little callback
-

Luffy's life is certainly at risk, but I just don't see any reasonable way that he or Katakuri could have an impact on the cake or the sea battle. The only thing left besides that is pride.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think we'll reach the position of Katakuri having to spare Luffy, Luffy is gonna win this thing. But if it did come to that, from the respect he evidently found for Luffy to his furious disappointment that Luffy dropped out of the fight too soon, I could actually see Katakuri letting Luffy go. Of course, in a 'you're the best challenge I've had in years, let's do this again sometime' kinda way. But it probably won't come to that.
-
Good chapter, but can we wrap this up already?

@Kaido:
I WIN THE BET https://jaiminisbox.com/reader/read/one-piece-2/en/0/893/page/1
Congratulations kind sir, you fought long and hard but your cause was just.
Off to read!
