Do the episodes have Funimation's usual visual edits like translated scene transition text?
Zephray said they did a few pages back, so it appears so. Also, I don't think they're visual edits, but rather Toei gives Funi textless versions of the episodes, and they fill in the translated text during post-production.

Demon Slayer hasn't stuck out to me–but maybe that's because Tanjiro is supposed to be very formal and proper.
Would suck if we got robotic language, but I don't see that happening to any notable degree. And I don't mind a more strict adherence to the translations as long as the lines don't sound unnatural.
It's not terrible by any means and I'm sure I'm nitpicking, but some of the dialogue is way too literal at times (which, as you said, may be intentional because of the setting and time period of the show). Another major thing that sticks out to me is how character's dialogue will just trail off as if they've lost their train of thought. It's just one of those quirks in Japanese that doesn't carry over into English, and it's something many dubs are trying to emulate lately I've noticed, and to poor effect.

Have you watched far enough to see whether all the Straw Hats swap actors or just do impressions of each other? I feel like Toei would definitely make sure it's the former, but I'm curious nonetheless!

It's a voice swap, same as the Japanese version
-
@LUFFY#1:
How does that tweet confirm anything we didn't know?
It does not. She says she can talk about it, then proceeds to not talk about it or answer any replies to her tweet.
@midod:It's a voice swap, same as the Japanese version
I’d forgotten the Japanese version, it’s been so many years. Would’ve been way way more fun to have impersonations. Oh, well.
@Shakidna_:Do the episodes have Funimation's usual visual edits like translated scene transition text?
They definitely do. I’ve seen “Punk Hazard” and various locations pop up at the bottom of the screen numerous times.
I kind of love how everyone in the comment replies is snapping back at dub haters. Feels like we’re on the winning side numbers-wise for once. -
Yeah i seen people mentioning Cavendish voice actor, does anyone have the link to the tweet or his twitter
-
Here you go.
Also, wouldn’t be surprised if we lose the gold logo next theme song or when DR starts.

Nice so this was said 40 days ago and it also its crazy to think its really has been over two whole years since new one piece dub, im glad we all stuck together during them dreadful times

I wouldn't really call it a break. Since they were still releasing some new dub stuff with Stampede and the tv specials during the period without no new episodes.
-

That screenshot was from ten days ago, so it’s actually been 50 days since he said that. And I think funimation stopped dubbing around a month ago. So they probably got a few episodes farther even than what he said.
-
Funimation pretty much stopped dubbing everything expect for My Hero Academia and Black Clover currently. Since both shows are having at home dubbing for the remaining episodes of both series currently as the Toonami airings are catching up.
-
Man, that was a fun time. Full thoughts tomorrow, but gosh darn it’s good to have the dub back. :D
That said, I’m happy Joel isn’t directing anymore; some of the performances fell short. Did we ever find out if he was fired or quit? When was that exactly?
-
I think he just quit and moved on with his career.
-
Isnt the bashing online from the stupid vic situation?
-
On the digital episodes, is the opening credits left in Japanese? Or is it in English like it normally is?
If it's in English, why is a separate "black credits" sequence necessary after the episode is over?
-
Netflix. Because they do that.
-
-
I know. Its designed so it can fit like a glove on it too.
ALSO. I finally saw another post from the Toei facebook and they called these new episodes a new dub. So I guess they did mean these new episodes are the dub they were talking about and not a whole new dub.

For folks who ponied up the money, how are we feeling about the new voices—particularly Kin?

Im trying to hold out for FUnimationNow, but man i been missing dubbed One Piece for so long that im go end up taking the plunge

So initially I was definitely not impressed with the casting for Kin’emon, as I thought the performance in Episode of Sabo was pretty shoddy and the voice in general was not really a good fit. But between looking back at that special, watching another show where his actor was the lead (the fact that I wasn’t particularly familiar with the actor initially didn’t exactly give me confidence in his capabilities), and watching these episodes here I feel like I’m coming around on it more, as I feel like I’m starting to get a general idea of what they’re going for with this casting/performance. However, it definitely could use some refinement…
As for Caesar, I wouldn’t exactly say there’s anything notably wrong with this performance nor would I exactly say that it doesn’t fit the character or anything, and of course Jerry Jewell is generally an actor I enjoy. It’s just……his Japanese voice actor really brought a lot to the character; I would probably say that Nakao’s performance is a lot of the reason why I enjoy this character as much as I do. So when placed against each other it’s hard not to be at least mildly disappointed. Though this is hardly the first time something like this has happened (even a few times where the opposite happens and the dub version makes the Japanese version seem far inferior), so like usual, I’ll get over that initial disappointment.
And for the other new characters, I don’t really have much to say at this point besides they fit fine.

Agreed absolutely. I'm coming around, but I think Joel's directing was severely lacking, so I'm hoping Mike can get the actor to where he needs to be. Specifically, there were a few scenes this set where Kin's VA clearly didn't go to the height that the animation demanded. One Piece is a cartoony show, and it uses overacting and melodrama for comedic purposes. Anime (and specifically OP) is about the only time where a director will need to ask the actor to overact, rather than the typical ask, which is to "pull back." For the scenes where Kin is being a perv and other scenes where he's being dramatic, the actor played the role too subtly–without committing to the comedy enough. At one point, my fiance noticed that he wasn't yelling when the art clearly indicated he should be.
It's lapse in performances like this that make me single out Joel as a weaker director--one who either doesn't do enough takes or give enough feedback to help the actor get to where they need be.
All of that said, I'm okay with Kin's VA--way more happy with it than I was in the recap movie--but hopefully he can hone the performance more as time goes on. For now, I prefer the Japanese VA, which doesn't happen as often for me as it does for others (I've seen all episodes of the dub and timeskip-on in the sub).

Same of Cesar, too. I had Chris Ayer's Frieza in my head for Cesar, and I'm having a hard time letting that go. The Japanese VA nails it, so this is two for two Japanese preferred for me this set, surprisingly. Jewel's voice is higher and more nasally than I was hoping. Of course, Cesar should be a bit high and nasally–but for me, not this much. Skip ahead in the video below for the Ayers voice. I think you'll see what I mean.

Ahh all of this is making me super curious how Kin'emon sounds and wanting to hear the PH dub. Never got Episode of Sabo and with where things are in the manga now I really want to go through all of the New World arcs up to Wano with the manga again and use the anime dub as a companion piece.

I’ve been doing something similar with One Pace. Also, it’s fun to read the chapter it’s based on every week right before the new subbed episode.

Last episode, Cesar let’s out a “shurohohoho.” Man, Joel, help the actors get the laughs right. Cesar’s laugh is one of the best in the series and Jewel is not nailing it.

I thought Joel was gone already… too bad.

He is, these were his final episodes

I wonder if Jerry Jewel will be any better as a director, assuming he’s the one to provide backup to Mike in DR. There was another guy who tackled Episode of East Blue, too; he might take the reigns instead of Jewel. I don’t expect Mike to take every episode in DR himself—especially if they have two teams on it. Mike can only direct one team, and he’s sure to get pulled away for another show as always.

I was flipping through the American manga today. Turns out, Cesar says Shuhohohoho in that. So either VIZ's translation is off, or the subbed anime went in a different direction. But man, I do love these laughs and the perfect Japanese VA:

I think that's just Viz.

That's a good idea, I haven't seen much of One Pace so forgot it's fairly linear from Punk Hazard onwards as far as what's covered in their edit.

I can't speak to their earlier work, but I've been watching their Wano edit. Holy hell are they master editors. You never notice the cuts at all, and the episodes are cut by something like 1/3-1/2 of their length. I'm usually a bit of an originalist with works of art, but man, their edit of Wano is the best way to watch the series. No competition.
When there's a dub, I might reach out and offer to help slide the dub onto their edits.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I’ve been rewatching the PH episodes, of course. Counted two or three instances so far where the words didn’t match the flaps. Not sure if that’s Joel or the engineer’s fault. Probably the latter, this time. By and large, the dub is great, but I think they need to slow down in the moment-to-moment of recording for it.
-
I know Joel was kinda bad but lets be easy on the guy. He quit already.

I mean, he isn’t reading this, so far as we know. And we’re not being unnecessarily mean about it. I’m just noticing more issues this set; maybe he was winding down and getting ready to leave Funimation and not giving it his all anymore. Who knows. It’s not a huge deal. The performances are a little weaker (the first episode of PH in particular was the weakest dub ep, though I haven’t seen the filler episodes yet) and there are some very minute flubs throughout. Mostly only stuff I’d notice because I’m rewatching and paying too much attention. We’ll survive. It’s still great fun.
Another weird thing: Kin switches between saying “woman” and “woah-man.” Wish they’d keep it consistent at least.

FUNimation's video site where you can watch One Piece episodes has a different home screen now. Instead of the video of Luffy stretching leading into the gold logo, there's now just a static image using the blue logo. This is the first time I can ever remember FUNi using the blue logo ever.

Honestly, it feels so good to have some sort of answer as to why the hiatus happened.
Now that OP is under the Toei ownership, does that mean there’s no problem with “Hands Up”?
-
It's not the first time they've used the blue logo. Funimation used the blue logo for Heart of Gold a couple years back too.

I'm assuming that had more to do with the record label than Toei. Regardless, let's hope that it's been resolved.
-
@Mikey:

True. But that was part of a special logo for the special, not standalone. And it was never again seen on another physical release.
I'm starting to suspect there's been something going on with the One Piece rights in North America. Or maybe 4Kids!'s trademark for the blue logo on their video releases finally expired….or Toei is simply forcing some unity in the logo here, now that Netflix has rights to it as well.

Read the last few pages of this forum. We discovered that Toei owns OP now in the states. They’re only paying Funimation to dub and distribute.
-
Did they completely forget that onepieceofficial.com exists? It hasn't been updated for maybe six years.
-
FUNi has the same rights that they've always had, Toei is just actively more involved financially now since they're paying for the dub too but it's still a pretty big change
-

Is this the case? If Toei is fronting more of the money, I wouldn't expect Funimation to be getting the same deal/rights they'd gotten previously.
-
One Piece must be a relatively easy show to direct. I imagine you’d just be saying “more energy” over and over to the cast.
-
I don't think I missed any posts. Where was it confirmed that Toei holds more sway over the dub now?
-

They're outright credited as Executive Producer now, Masayuki Endo specifically, and the ADR Approvals credit now exists with people from Toei listed even though we know Toei has already been approving stuff for the dub for a while now. But these are the same credits they had on the Dragon Ball Super dub, which they paid for, so Toei is sinking money into the dub
-
Anyone think our odds of getting old movies increases with this new Toei/Funi deal? Since now it’s more Toei’s decision than Funi’s. Would be good to look at other countries where Toei was in full control. See if they prioritized the backlogs there.
Of course, I personally wouldn’t bet on a backlog dub until they catch up—if that ever happens.
-
I really hope so. I don't see why Toei wouldn't bother to release these movies in sets of 3 or even one by one so that OP is represented in that way in the West. They know the latest movies have done well here so I feel it'd make sense, but I also could see them thinking nobody cares about those films anymore…
-
I hope they do, having a new fresh dub for these old movies could give them the breath of freshness they need to sell. Plus I really would love physical dubbed release of movie 6, as does everyone I expect
-
Movie six would be the best, but I’d hope for combo packs. Would be kind of annoying to buy each one—especially the earlier ones.
In any case, the most we can do is comment on their posts asking for it, I guess. Hopefully they’ll move forward on them, though again I don’t suspect they’ll touch anything until they fly through significantly more of the episodes.
I’m hoping for another early digital release for the next set. June can’t come fast enough.
