Outerspec

Alright, it's that time again for Hollywood to pat itself on the back and hand little golden men to one another. Will Leo finally take home oscar gold? How many white jokes will Chris Rock make? How overly long will these oscars take? We'll find out this Sunday.

Make your choices below.

A little bit different from the last one. My picks for who I THINK should win are in ITALICS AND UNDERLINED and who I think they're going to PICK are in BOLD. Any choice that I think will be both mine and the academy's pick will be all BOLDED, ITALICIZED, AND UNDERLINED. Admittedly, I have not seen every single movie nominated and I left out the less popular categories, not because they're less important, but because I don't personally care enough or I haven't seen the movies in those categories. Anyone who has seen those movies from the categories or are interested in the ones I left out (interested in sound editing etc..) feel free to add to the discussion.

The Room was one of my favorites too. A powerful movie delivered by a very small cast and it felt…real. That just shows how well this film was made. The Big Short was great too but it just got me all kinds of mad at my government and big banks.

As dumb and self-congratulatory as they might be the grammys and oscars are seen as the pinnacle of recognition in their respective arts by millions of people around the world and, most telling, the artists themselves. Music and movies are such an inclusive and popular form of entertainment for billions of people of all races and ethnic backgrounds, and the casts reflect that more and more nowadays, so it's no surprise you see people getting upset that when it's time to award these popular forms of entertainment everyone takes part in all they see are white people.

Well, in this case it's for the movies not music which definitely does not have a problem with diversification.

Haven't seen The Revenant (but I will in the future), but as far as I'm concerned, it could get that one as well.

Both literally only include the most surface level stuff. And in the case of the Oscars there's the whole Oscar-bait system going on. I don't see how people can criticize them with a straight face for being white washed while ignoring just how limited the selection of movies nominated is in general. It's all a self congratulatory Hollywood circlejerk and I find it hilarious that people get upset that they're not nominated.

And what do they even want to be done? Any time I see complaining like this I wonder if they even have any suggestions outside of instituting a quota, which would be more harmful than helpful.

Now explain to me all the deep stuff they're missing while I sit here and wonder if you've actually even seen most of those movies on those lists. And, yes, I have. Then tell me how "surface level", whatever that means, 'Room' is, or 'Cartel', or 'Look of Silence, or even 'Amy' a movie about a pop idol which deals with fame, pressure, and alcohol and drug addiction.

Actually, that's part of the problem people aren't ignoring. The limited diversity of movies and actors that are nominated are the problems people are talking about, not ignoring. That's how this whole controversy started with talk about more diversification in these categories. What exactly are you talking about besides that?

The Oscars are a mostly American thing so evem though you'll see a nice nod to foreign films it won't be made as big a deal as the American ones. There are so many movies out in the world the best thing to do is each country with a prominent movie business have their own awards show really. It only makes logistical sense.

I find it hilarious when Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't win an oscar. Congratulations, you're just like everyone else.

I believe the most helpful suggestion was increasing the number of minorities in the selection process so that the films and actors/actresses aren't chosen by a bunch of mostly old white guys.

I'm interested in seeing how this whole controversy plays out still though. Having more diversity on the people who choose things could help but that still seems to me to be choosing people for race over qualification but then again I don't know how they choose the panel.

Well, you clearly haven't seen enough movies to make that determination, then. Look at the nominees this year, none of them are anywhere near being big blockbusters besides The Revenant and Mad Max, and you're stretching the definition of Oscar bait pretty far if you include movies like Room or Spotlight in there.

The Oscars do favor certain kinds of movies too much though, like bland biopics and safe, Eurocentric period pieces, and changing up the composition of Academy voters making them more diverse not just in race but hell, in age, too, would help. This year I would have left out Bridge of Spies and Brooklyn easily.

But also Hollywood has to be proactive and be more willing to cast non-white actors in roles that don't require an actor of a certain race. Sure, you're not going to cast a black guy as Glass in The Revenant, but why not have the lead of The Martian be non-white? Or Room? Hollywood tends to only cast non-white actors when they "have to," like say 12 Years a Slave, or as a token for forced diversity. The decision-makers have to be a little braver.

The problem is that this is what anything after this controversy will feel like. I don't really know how people making movies (or writing books) pick the races or genders of their characters but why have the main character of the Martian be black over white or vice versa? Why not have him be Native American? I'm fairly sure most of the people making these movies are white so maybe it's just they feel more comfortable having their characters be white. But then you have people like Spike Lee that are the same way but with black people.

Full disclosure, I did overall enjoy the film, but it's a little weird for me since that was my first exposure to the story. All I'll say is, while I liked it, it probably didn't deserve a best picture nominee.

And that's two Oscars for Mad Max.
