Isn't that more or less the same as being King of England?
I'm now imagining this as a supervillain plot. The Tangerine Tornado wants to whisk the US back to Colonial times where he can crown himself Kind of England and use that power to make America great from the start!
Meanwhile, make of this what you will.

We've known for a while Trump doesn't actually want the job. He ran for the free advertising and for his ego. He didn't really want to win until it looked like he could win. But he knows he's not qualified and its a super stressful job, of course he doesn't actually want it. He just wants the prestige.
As shown by the very idea of handing some of it off to the VP when typically that's an absolute nothing job.
I'm still waiting on Dr. Horrible, Bad Horse, or Fake Thomas Jefferson to make an appearance at the RNC, but who knows. Might be too extreme for their organization's tastes.
@Monkey:
This year is an ugly ugly year where everyone the world over seems to be watching slimy hairy glistening insects crawl out from behind the walls of their homes, walls they thought were safe and clean. Like I keep saying, this is our chance to smash them, and after all they were always there, but if you aren't shuddering a lot in 2016 you aren't paying attention. So tldr, Iowa has nothing to apologize for that anyone else doesn't also it seems.
Ah, true. That's really the nasty bit, Trump's one thing, but the awfulness he brings out in people is worse, like he's indirectly teaching them that it's ok to be like this. It sure made my Grandpa more comfortable expressing his anti-Muslim opinions more frequently.
That was such an awkward family gathering…

Nah, those celebrities are far too mainstream. I'm expecting someone more like Johnny Snow or Bait & Switch to speak.
Now watch Bait be Right but Switch has decided to support the Left

I bet Dead Bowie's too busy trying to convince people he's different from the actually dead Bowie.
And by golly, we seem to already have a Bait & Switch:

I've said before that Trump makes it very easy to decide who to vote for. All Clinton has to do is let Trump speak for himself.

W. wanted to be President because of a lifetime of being compared unfavorably to his old man and brothers.
Also it's pretty much impossible for Trump to have better hair than anyone.

I'd say wait and see how polls look like following the Democratic convention before making any decisions
i'm so glad we have both Jill Stein AND Gary Johnson to steal votes and not get elected so that people can feel better about themselves for like 10 minutes right up until trump becomes president and decided that gay marriage needs to go
It's never a third party's fault when it siphons away votes from the party closest to it; it's the latter's fault for not convincing third party voters that setting themselves on fire is a bad idea.
W. wanted to be President because of a lifetime of being compared unfavorably to his old man and brothers..
Brothers? You mean there's more besides shady Jeb and George Jr.?
So Ted Cruz, true to character, apparently used his convention speech to rhetorically stab Trump in the back and advance himself lol. He left the stage to boos, but smiling.
Honestly not sure who he means by "vote your conscience." Johnson, I guess? Or maybe one of those hyper-conservative third parties like the American Independent Party.

Ted Cruz the Vince Russo of Republican politics.

Well, yeah, there's Neil, who was heavily involved in the collapse of Silverado Savings and Loan back in the late '80s; among other things, he voted to loan about $100 million to a couple of his business partners without disclosing to the rest of the board that they were his partners.
Plus there's Martin who seems to have avoided being as incompetent as the rest.

I love how the major news stories out of this convention so far are Melania Trump plagiarizing Michelle Obama and how Ted Cruz just can't bring himself to endorse Trump.
It's really the convention they deserve.

Apparently Newtie released his prepared remarks for his speech and they included a reference to Cruz's endorsement of Trump so Grinch had change his own speech in the middle of it.

The speech she wrote, but didn't write, that Hillary Clinton was somehow responsible for her
plagiarizing and one that the actual writer of said speech was willing to resign for but Trump refused because.
they deserve all the headaches they've been getting.

wait, if 25% of the people vote for a third party and the republicans get like 40% and democrats get 35%, do the republicans win? here in Brazil we would have a second election with just two parties. We do that for presidents, governors and mayors of big cities. Only small town mayors can get elected with less than 50% of valid votes.

These polls are meaningless. There's no way to accurately predict what's going to happen in november. Most people do not participate in these polls. 9,353 people is virtually nothing compared to how many people will vote in the upcoming election.

We don't have runoff elections for the Presidency; it's simply whoever gets a majority of the electoral college, which can indeed be won with a plurality of the vote. Runoff elections in general aren't all that common in this country at any level of government.

I know you definitely need a 50% or higher majority. Another thread I follow that brought this up said, iirc, that of there's no majority it could go to Congress. Don't hold me to that though, I'm working off memory

Republicans would presumably would win if they led by 5% of the popular vote but it's more complicated than that. The US doesn't base presidential results on the popular vote, and on multiple occasions the winner of the popular vote has not won the presidency. Instead, each state holds their own election among the presidential candidates, with representative votes in the electoral college (which actually determines the president) being apportioned roughly according to population in a winner-take-all fashion. Thus California, the most populous state, has 55 electoral votes while Wyoming, the least populous, has 3 for a total of 538 electoral votes. A candidate needs to win more than half of those votes, or 270+, in order to win the presidency. The electoral college serves to amplify election differences but very occasionally runs contradictory to the popular vote, which always causes big problems.
Naturally, each state has different interests and has different demographics. West Coast and Northeast states almost always vote Democrat while Great Plains and Southern states typically vote Republican; the Midwest is split but leans Democrat. In the average election for the past 20 years, only some 20% of states will switch party between elections. Those states are called battleground states are swing states and they typically decide the election.
So, to answer your question, the winner would depend on the distribution of votes across states. Regardless, no runoff election would be held unless no candidate won a majority of the electoral votes. In that case, weird stuff starts happening and the decision passes to the House of Representatives to vote among the top three vote-getters.
Yes, we know it's dumb and needlessly complicated. The wide majority of the American public favors getting rid of the electoral college.
ah, so the candidate needs 50% of the delegates, but to get the delegates from a state the candidate doesn´t need 50% of the votes from there

Basically except it.s more like .3% vote for a third party, which causes republicans to get 49.9% and democrats to get 49.8% and thus costs the democrats the election.
It's what happened in 2000, Gore lost the whole thing by a few thousand votes that went to Nader that would certainly have otherwise gone to him.
It's just a two party system to begin with, hence no second elections…. Basically third parties are completely irrelevant except for the tiny handful of votes they siphon off in swing states from whatever party they're closest to.
There's also a whole electoral college system but that's a complicated thing to explain in brief... but basically you only need 50.1% of a state to get an entire state, and different states have different values based on population, and some of the minimal weighting means some states are worth more than others, and swing states that could go either way are most valuable of all.

Obviously Ted Cruz knows Trump is going to lose big. It wouldn't have made any sense to not endorse your party candidate otherwise. Man, this Convention is being more news for the number of empty seats than for the number of assistants. I wonder why.
With stuff like this you kind of wonder how Trump is going to win states that have a lot of black people
