If you look at the last couple of pages, the talking that seems to be Uu is coming from Mitsuba's hand, so it's possible that the talking coming from her mouth (when she's talking to Yasuho) is actual Mitsuba with memory issues. What that means, I have no idea.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Do the Dio Walk!
-
-
Just finished part 7 and have some questions real quick but first Poco Loco actually won the absolute mad lad.
How was it conveyed johnny regained the ability to walk?
Is there anyone else considers Lucy Steele the hidden real protagonist?
Did anyone who read this part's ending expect the dio final villain shenanigans?
Will this be adapted into anime or is it too violent? And some general thoughts.
I like how araki handled Lucy and Mr. Steele. It's set up so you think in the back of your mind "well this is kind of uncomfortable…please don't be romantic" and it peels back later as we learn more about Steele that he and Lucy have some unquantifiable non romantic love and trust for each other and the lengths Lucy goes is incredible. She's one of Araki's best written characters and her development is handled great with her going farther and farther to gurantee Stephen's safety and when she is the one who kills dio at the very end, it's incredibly satisfying.
I never got spoiled a single time about Gyro dying, I didnt even read a single hint about it and yet I knew he was gonna die. However the last of his actions were vital to johnny defeating the president. He was a gritty man with a soft soul on the inside and helped inspire johnny and keep him from becoming someone like Dio with his Dark Determination. Their bromance is honestly the most believeable one with a main jojo and while he was warned his sentimentality would be his undoing he never let that effect what he thought was right.
The wild west and race setting was also a more organic way to set up the stand fights than part 3 and I liked most of them though watching them in the anime would a few easier to understand.
Although some may dislike Johnny not defeating Dio I liked that they showed Johnny was capable of it but just got some bad luck. It happens and even though Johnny is hit with a reversed version of his own attack the length he went to protect Lucy and her husband paid off as he is the one who lives and Dio dies.
For all those that died in this part im super glad Johnny was saved by Mr. Steele and Dio was defeated by Lucy. I thought it was going to end up a Johnny dies and Dio gets everything he wants end and that felt like it wouldn't have really fit the bittersweet notes of the entire story.
Though Gyro and Johnny living would have made this a lot more satisfying by me I feel it's still one of my favorites despite me not being a fan of downer endings. I think araki has progressed a lot with his writing starting at around Part 4 and if you compare this to Part 1 it's just a huge difference in terms of how much more human Johnny feels compared to Jonathan. Even compared to Caesar, Gyro far outshines him as the best Zepelli and the side villains are varied and feel like real people for the most part (sorry pork-pie hat guy). The main villain is a well intention extremist whose actual aim wasn't evil but his methods were and Johnny even has to acknowledge this but chooses the idea that a man with this power behind him is not good in his opinion all while Funny is promising him the return of Gyro and he can actually back it up. Knowing what he know about him and how he didnt hurt Mr. Steele it's possible he might have done it but when he chose to shoot johnny with the gun he showed that his ruthless nature would still be a major issue for others and Johnny had to sacrifice Gyro coming back to prevent the corpse from falling into his hands
The writing just feels like a completely different standard and it explores a lot of themes while being kind of open about which is the write path in a good way. I've seen a lot of stories that pretend to set up dichotomy of values while clearly painting one side as better. Here you dont feel Johnny was always in the right or that Gyro died because his world view was incorrect, there morals informed what they did but the actions of others determined what happened to them. Throughout it all you just felt a sense of realism and that you never knew what could happen next. It was unpredictable and a crazy ride and im glad I picked this back up from the beginning after stopping at like chapter 30 last year.
So yeah I gotta give it a rank above all the other Jojo part's right now
7>4>6>5 and 3 and 2>1
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Found these two comments on a review of SBR I really liked.
Gyro resolved the central conflict and theme of the part, being the depression of Johnny. He taught Johnny how happiness can only be found by cherishing the moment and relationships you build during your lifetime. The point of the "meaningless" deaths and Lucy Steel is that not everyone is equally fortunate, not every dream can be fulfilled, but each and everyone can cope and find meaning in their lives and actions.
-
Part 7 easily has the strongest writing of anything in JJBA. It's thematically strong and inhabits the western genre brilliantly. Lucy Steele is solidly in the top three best written women in the whole series and Hot Pants is no slouch either. Gyro's great, Valentine is a late-bloomer but a fantastic villain, and Dio makes for an extremely enjoyabel secondary antagonist.
My main complaints: many of the fights, by virtue of adhering to the gunslinger concept, are a bit of a step backwards from the previous two parts, and Johnny isn't extroverted or quirky enough to be that fun of a protagonist. But so much of SBR is great that it's still the consensus Best JJBA Part.
-
Part 7 outclasses every other part with its highs but I feel like it's fairly inconsistent, especially towards the beginning. It's got some of my favorite arcs and sections in the series but I probably wouldn't consider it my favorite part. And I was not a fan of spin. I don't think it's any more violent than any of the other Jojo parts really. And they've already been fairly good with the gore in the anime so I don't think it's an issue except for the TV broadcast, which has already been fairly heavily censored for the animated parts so far.

Assuming Jolyne is another of the 3 whose your third?

@Long:
Assuming Jolyne is another of the 3 whose your third?
I'd pick Yasuho from Part 8, personally. Ermes is also solid.
-
Well, might as well share my thoughts on part 3. I started watching it on Toonami about a year ago, and now in the beginnings of part 4, I can definitely call myself a fan of Araki's work.
getting cocky and thinking he's beaten Jotaro (Steely Dan got really close), but then Jotaro just ORAORAs them to oblivion. That isn't to say he NEVER had any moments of brilliance or clever thinking like Joseph - the fake name with Enya, faking out D'Arby, and of course, some of his tricks in the final battle against Dio (sorry, I refuse to capitalize it).
He has this really nice moment when he talks to Susie on the phone and ensures her things are fine. And that leads to the heart of it all - despite looking like a delinquent, his love for his mother is what drives him to continue the journey. But I understand why people tend to favor future Jojo leads.Joseph was overall pretty great to have as a foil to Jotaro, he had some nice tricks up his sleeve too. Part of me does think his stand felt a little….tacked on? (was there even a spirit with a face?). Constricting things with vines seemed used a LOT more than messing with a television. Liked his battle against Mariah most of all.
now the others.
-Polneraff was the greatest non-Jojo character in the part. He seemed very human and passionate, which helps that a lot of the levity in the part came from him. His stand was pretty cool, too. But I do think Araki liked to put him in horrible situations a little too much for my tastes. Like I get the feeling he enjoys laughing with Pol at the same time laughing AT him. The scene with his "revived" sister and the genie stand? That was just too cruel, and then you had the revelation that everyone BUT him knew the truth about Avdol. He felt bad about what happened! :(-Kakyoin is next in the line, being a polite student in contrast to Jojo. I'm sure we all know that Emerald Splash is the most laughed at technique in the series. He had moments here and there, especially the fight against Death 13. But unlike Pol I felt as if he had the least drive to join the journey relative the other Jojos making it such a personal quest. You don't really learn more about him until his dying scenes, and I'll come back to that.
-Avdol could've benefited from more screentime, because visually he was always the coolest to me. How did he meet Joseph? Maybe some scenes cemented their friendship? No? Okay. Araki does this annoying thing early on where Avdol is "killed". I knew ahead of time that he would die later on for real, so for me this unforunately felt like such a waste of time for him as a character. And worse of all, even when he's back into the action, he does really get those character-defining moments like Jotaro and Pol too.
Araki does the same thing with Kakyoin in Egypt, where he's also taken out of the action for a bit. Relative to the other three, these two needed the most amount of development. With 5 leads I don't know why Araki had to somehow budget his time with them. Like Avdol doesn't even die kamikazing Cream or something.-Iggy was my least favorite member of the team. Not that he's a dog (although Araki seems to love horribly injuring them), but because I felt he spent so much time away from the action, like he joined so late into the journey. I don't even remember his stand's debut, just the finishing episode on Pet Shop. He seemed like a jerk most of the time anyway, but at least at the end he was fighting to avenge Avdol, and not backing down.
Stand enemies ranged from really awesome (the brothers with the future book) to kinda forgettable (the captain, the sea witch lady). And then you had goofy-looking motherfuckers like Alessi that tried to kill an toddler Pol and a girl turned into a fetus. Araki, what the fuck. Then you had slimy fuckheads you just wanted to see Jotaro punch into paste like Dan and Yellow Temperance.
I was caught off guard a few times - Enya died midway through and was NOT Dio's #2, Hol Horse stuck around for a bit, etc. - so I appreciate the mixup in this stand of the week format. Now let's move to Dio.
Probably THE most iconic villain in Jojo for never knowing when to quit, being petty as all hell, and hating the Joestars. I questioned at first why, if his minions could track Jotaro and company, he couldn't just find them, do ZA WARUDO and snap all of their necks, but Dio needed to be ready, what in Jonathan's body and all.
Again, I was mostly spoiled, but the showdown with him was extremely entertaining - his own tricks, Jotaro's power clashing with his, Kakyoin figuring it out….it felt like what people think of when they think of Jojo.
But I can't look at the battle and not have my Bleach days flair up. It was a little ridiculous that Jotaro basically learns to emulate Dio's own power to win. Granted, the stands are similar, but stopping time was uniquely Dio's, y'know? Still, it was an intense battle through and through, and if you know part 1, the victory becomes all the more sweetat the cost of a lame fakeout deathSo I'm into part 4. But the curse is that I know a lot of assorted spoilers. Kira is the badguy, Giorno is Dio's son, Pucci pulls hax and manages to reset the universe, the villain of SBR is Funny Valentine, there's Gappy the sailor, etc. etc.
-
Phew, done with part 1, 2, 3 & 4.
Really hard to judge the quality of this series. It's such a rollercoaster of themes and designs, all while steadily escalating into something else. Got to meditate on that one.
Just one thing I can say for sure, and that goes for all seasons: the soundtrack is amazing. I would have probably dropped this series after the frist few epsiodes if it weren't for this epic japanese guy's singing (and you people telling me to power through the start):And of course the fighting soundrack of season 2
Sadly I couldn't find the original anywhere, only one version with vocals and one fanmade recreation. Sadness, it's such a great track.
Guess now I'm at a point where I have to decide if I continue with the manga or wait for the other seasons to get anime adaptions? Diamond is Unbreakable seems to be the most recent season?
-
Kakyoin had the purest of intentions into joining the group: MILF hunting.
But I agree with pretty much what you said. People tend to shit to much on Jotaro just because he was not as flashy as the other Jojo's.
And I do believe the theory that Araki intended to ZA WARUDO to have all of the Joestar's stand powers, hence why SP can also stop time.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

DiU is the most recently already finished. Vento Aureo is starting October.

Goddamnit, Matt!

i cannot believe jojo's getting dubbed was entirely a pretense for an overwatch joke

And yet they still didn't have Enya say "THOSE JOESTARS ARE GIVING ME SUCH A HEADACHE!!!!!!!!!!"

If you've just finished up to part 4 with the anime you might as well just wait a couple months to watch part 5 then you can read the manga if you want after that's over.
-
Quick question:
For someone who has never watch/read Jojo before, does the 2012 anime series cover the story from the beginning?
So, I can just start from that?
Thanks. -

Thanks.Yes! The anime is a great way to enter the series.

Yep. First season is parts 1 and 2, second season is part 3, third season is part 4, and the upcoming fourth season is part 5.
-
Thanks Jabberwok & Sakonosolo!
Now I have no excuse not to start the series.
I have been trying to get into this series for a while. I tried the manga and dropped it after 5 chapters. Maybe the anime will be a better experience.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
After watching the first 4 episodes, I can understand why people like the series. I'm hooked.
First impression of the first 4 episode! I HATED the 1st episode. I skipped pretty much most of it. I read the 1st 5 chapters(?) of the manga so I roughly know how the series started. I HATED the entire plotline of Dio trying to take over the Joestar family fortune by ruining Jojo's life and trying to kill the father. It's the reason why I stop reading the manga.
I cannot stand Dio at the beginning. Dio's action at the beginning really rubbed me the wrong way. Your foster father gave you a much better life. You got a nice home, nice clothes, nice food,an education, a better future etc.
Look, your original life with your abusive, alcoholic dad sucks. I understand your desire to have wealth. You could have became a lawyer & marry a rich lady with the Joestar connection. You would have gotten your wealth this way.
But you rather antagonise Jonathan & kill your foster father who has done so much for you.
Thank god Jonathan saw through his bullshit after a while or I will have drop this series.
I also can't stand Erina, the generic love interest. Thank god she is mostly irrelevant.
! Also, how are both Dio & Jonathan 12 years old in episode 1? They don't even look 12. lol
I know Dio is one the most important villain of this series. You are supposed to HATE the villain's actions but you can still enjoy the character. I hate Dio's actions & dislike him as a character. I understand his motive for doing what he did…but I still don't like him. He got less insurable as I progress so at least now I can tolerate him.
! Episode 2 & 3 were pretty great. Dio's misdeed got outed. I'm digging the whole mask plotline. Is Speedwagon going to be a sidekick or something?
! Episode 4 got me hooked. I like Zeppeli. He's a cool dude. The hamon system (the main combat system, I presume?) was introduced very awkwardly. Random person showed up and started teaching Jojo how to use hamon. I think it could introduce a bit more naturally.
I also finally understood the reference to Leorio from HxH now.
! On the side note, I love the opening theme & sequence. The combination of the manga panels, 2d animation, 3d animation and the sound effects really make it cool. -
The Jojo anime, while very good, imho damages the manga quite substantially due to very fluctuating animation and insufficient oompf when it comes to the final battles. It's a great adaptation, but it lacks consistency and can't fully emulate Araki's style in the manga.
For the proper Jojo experience, reading the manga (especially the end of part 3 and the end of part 4) is a must
-
Being great but lacking consistently is a full emulation of Araki's style
-
@Purple:
Being great but lacking consistently is a full emulation of Araki's style
True haha, but still, I'm referring specifically to the animation budget noticeably dropping in some episodes, and at times for big reveals… which is especially grievious when a panel that was super impactful and detailed in the manga is nowhere near the same level in the anime (Killer Queen reveal and Dio vs Jotaro come to mind)
-
I would say Part 3 became significantly better on the anime (I never managed to read it from start to end on the manga, I always drop it eventually and need to pick up where I left months later because of how much it bores me. On the anime it is gold!), but I agree with the other ones.
-
@Purple:

Why you had to do him like that.

Specifically Dio vs Jotaro is way better in the manga. Just has more impact. The middle of part 3 is pretty meh in manga form, the anime sort of improves it by making each fight actually entertaining, while in the manga it's very hit and miss.
But Jojo to me has always been more about the highs being extremely high, and lows getting from medium to very very low. Yeh the anime does make the lows more bearable, but it can't capture the same heights as the manga in the crucial scenes… which is really it's number 1 flaw.
-
Just finish part 1. Just started the 1st episode of part 2…(Now I'm at episode 14)
! Overall, Part 1 was okay. It feels like the series was just starting to established itself. There were some fights were pretty good and some were just so meh. The series is pretty gory at some point.
Jonathan is pretty meh as a the main character. I can barely stand Dio. Most of the supporting characters were so-so. Speedwagon was especially annoying. He functions as a narrator at some point. I got spoiled regarding the ending of part 1. I roughly knew what to expect.
! As for part 2, Joseph is already way more interesting than his grandfather. I seen his old man version is many of the 'oh my god' compilation.
Nice to see Speedwagon again…and he is dead. That's fast.
Oh that random guy who was Zeppeli's comrade is now the bad guy, I guess. Seriously, I barely remember who the heck he was until he reverted back to his young form. And I watched the episodes consecutively.
! Nice to see the mask is playing a role again.
! More comments (up till episode 14 so far)
-Part 2 is so much more engaging and interesting than Part 1. Joseph is great and a fun character.
-Whathisname is dead and only purpose in the story was to convey the message about pillar man. He really was a minor character till the end.
-Speedwagon is alive! Somehow I like him better as a old man.
-When Zeppeli mentioned he had a family, I knew eventually I will see a descendant of his. I'm liking Caesar so fast. I do like the fact that he and Jojo don't exactly get along and are butting head. Make the dynamic more fun.
-What could possibly go wrong with experimenting & trying to awaken the pillar man...massive amount of death
-I love the amount of fodder soldier that keep doing stupid shit that get themselves killed.
-I'm dying at the poses of the 3 pillar men. There's no way that is not deliberate. Part 1 has those exaggerated poses but I think Part 2 is where the famous Jojo poses start to kick in full gear. -
Part 3 is improved because the Zelda/Okami paradox.
TLDR; the fact that you know that a fight will end in a chapter or two makes the boring ones more bearable, and the exciting ones more delectable, and the long ones done properly more surprising and awesome.
Instead in the manga, you had no idea that the fight with the moon will last half a volume.

Conceptually, Araki wanted Johnathan to be like the morally always in the right joey jojo who always did the right thing so that was kind of the legacy of the joestars, but even in retrospect he felt like he was too straight laced and boring.
-
Jonathan's the only Joestar who isn't an asshole to some degree. That's his power.
-
Thinking about it, the level of assholeness just keep increasing all the way up to Johnny, huh!? I think that's Jojolion problem, Joshu was robbed of his rightful place as the 8th Jojo.
-

Hm, I'd probably have it dip down for a short period with Josuke, but back to full throttle with Giorno

I'd actually argue that Giorno isn't that much of an asshole. Merciless and occasionally prickish, sure, but he's probably the least actively antagonistic JoJo after Johnathan.
-
Jolyne isn't a bad girl, she's just misunderstood. And cut Johnny a break he's a cripple he's allowed to be mean.
Also defending Giorno when he's a literal italian mafioso boy who wants to lead the mafia and regularly swindles people lol.

Well, half of Josuke is Yoshikage Kira, so….

JoJo really knew how to "Get Back" at people who crossed him

Pretty much. He's very predictable in his action.
It's not that you can't make a goody two shoes interesting.
I think my biggest issue with him is that he felt some kind of sympathy for Dio. Dio was an asshole since day 1. He treated Jonathan like shit, killed his dog, humiliated his crush, killed his dad, betrayed his trust etc.
Yet Jonathan cried for him when he was killed…
There's a fine line between being nice & being a moron... -
Johnathan was literally the sorta guy who would love your enemy. He's that level of wholesome, and yeah it's not really warranted for Dio but it's more a measure of how resilient in terms of goodness Johnathan is
And then you got Joseph
-
Giorno is a prop for like more than a quarter of Vento Aureo, he's not in the spotlight enough to express his Genetic Joestar Asshole Powers.
@Purple:

Jonathan's soul is so pure that he is the only person Dio not only respects but loves (Pucci suddenly starts crying.)

The same Johnathan that got mad at Erina after he got his ass kicked for trying to help her?
@Cyan:

Hell of an abusive relationship.
-
The same Johnathan that got mad at Erina after he got his ass kicked for trying to help her?
That's pretty wholesome for a Victorian Gentleman
-
Also, that was him as a teen, are we judging people's characters based on their hormone homonunculi stage?
-
No one can be as perfect as Jesus.
Except Valentine.
-
Jonathan - A Good Boy Who Does Good Things Because He's Nice and Loves Everyone
Joseph - The personification of Impact font, gets better (and worse) as an adult
Jotaro - Cowboy Machismo as projected by an awkward, gigantic teenager
Josuke - A Good Boy Who Does Horrifying Things to Bad People Because Holy Shit Josuke
Giorno - Literally A Mafioso with Everything that entails
Jolyne - the product of happens when you have a child when you're just Cowboy Machismo as projected by an awkward teenager
Johnny - He was an asshole before and after he got disabled, luckily he gets better about it
Josuke - A Weird (but Good) Boy Who Will Hunt You Down and End You Painfully if you cross him -
Jonathan is such a good boy that even Dio fell in love and decided to become one with him (in the most DIO way possible, of course - decapitation, sliding his tentacles into jojo's body and inhabiting him for the next 100 years)
-
After years of rigorously studying the pages of Vento Aurero, no evidence was found indicating Giorno's personality beyond that time he drinks pee.

Don't you understandddd… IT'S JUST BADLY TRANSLATED goes on nerdy rant about part 5 being the best part and Giorno being the best Jojo /s
-
Part 5 did have a bad translation for a while though. Part 4 too. I don't know when 5's got better but I was following the group several years ago that was retranslating part 4. I like part 5 but I could probably agree with Giorno not being too notable himself. Part 5 has some cool stands and fights though.
-
There is a significant amount of time in part 5 spent on watching people describe how much personality Giorno has, rather than actually giving him personality.
-
Wait, Giorno isn't uber virtuous to contrast with Dio?
Does he even learn all the shit his dad did?
-

Him having any response to the existence of Dio would require him to have personality.

Given how his great great grandson who was teenager for all of part 3 and loves to call his mother a bitch and his grandfather old man why not?

We went from "Even Speedwagon is Afraid" to "Even Giorno is a vanilla protagonist"?
