Summaries:

! > Episode 48- Mugendramon's Attack (May 16th)
Taichi and co. reach FAGA, only to encounter the vicious Ultimate level Mugendramon. It absorbs Piyomon, Palmon, and Gomamon's data, rendering them unable to battle. Meanwhile, Taichi receives a message from Leomon, who is far away traveling on ElDoradimon while housing the refugee Digimon: "Something odd is happening! Cloud Continent is falling!" It isn't long before even MetalGarurumon's data is absorbed and he is unable to fight. Mugendramon directs its powerful Mugen Cannon at the children and Digimon to give the final blow. Taichi and WarGreymon risk their own lives to protect everyone by charging at Mugendramon…

Episode 49- The Evil God Descends, Millenniumon (May 23rd)
Yamato, Sora, and Koushiro try to stop Millenniumon from reviving, but Gryphomon attacks MetalGarurumon and it goes beyond their control. While Taichi's sister Hikari is stricken with despair, Mimi tries to console her. But even Mimi's grief at losing Taichi is huge.

Episode 50- Finale: The Ultimate Holy War (May 30th)
Amidst Millenniumon's fury, Hikari and the other chosen children don't know whether Taichi and WarGreymon are dead or alive, but they choose to believe that they are still alive and fight. As the digital world is about to be surrounded in darkness, all Digimon send up their prayers for peace, awakening an evolution to Ultimate that no one had predicted.

Episode 51- The Mystery Hidden in the Crests (June 6th)
The children overcome their final battle with Millenniumon, when they receive a message from Garbamon telling them that he found something that looks exactly like the crest that shows up on the Digivice at a place called "The Tree of Information." The children hurry there, where they reunite with Garbamon and meet Wisemon, who collects information on the digital world. There they find a secret room that's engraved with the eight crests, and learn of the even further duties that the chosen children bear.

My thoughts:

! It's pretty annoying that they're rushing into the fight with Millenniummon without giving most of the chosen children their mega forms one by one (it sounds like they're all getting them at once in episode 50 which is… what the hell were they thinking, seriously).
! I don't know how the rest of the series is going to play out, but there's no way Diablomon can handle fifteen episodes worth of plot development and Millenniummon should really be getting at least five or six additional episodes instead of just showing up randomly at FAGA and fighting the Digidestined because destiny.
I don't care how cool the fight looks, we needed to spend some time with Millenniummon the same way we did with Myotismon and Etamon and Devimon and Puppetmon in the original series to get to see him in action as a villain and learn a bit about his character.
If he just shows up and attacks mindlessly like 2020 Devimon did that's not a character, it's a miniboss from a 90s JRPG.

! Yeah no, I've been defending this show as a fun time but if they're just gonna shove in all the rest of the megas in there when Tai and Matt got lavish transformation sequences and when they had plenty of free time in the last batch of episodes to give them their megas, it'll suck.

On a positive note, Mugendramon is getting to show off next week. Him getting totally gimped in the original show when he was clearly the coolest Dark Master was the worst.

Well we avoided the worst possible future where every other Digimon got their megas all at once… but what we got was kind of worse in its own way, and at this point it's more interesting to dissect and look at what went wrong than be mad.

I didn't care at all about this incarnation of Millenniummon. The fact that it couldn't speak didn't help, but I think the real problem is that final bosses in Digimon typically represent a challenge for the chosen children's teamwork to overcome, so it's really about the long-term exploration of their personalities and how they learn to become better friends and teammates.
The fact that Metalgarurumon stood on the side and did literally nothing is the best proof of how and why they screwed this up.
There should have been some sense of finality to TK and Kari's arc of reviving the holy Digimon and achieving their joint destiny, but I can't remember if there was even a single moment where they or Gatomon and Patamon interacted in a meaningful, story-relevant way.

I'm just happy we're getting our solo mega episodes. Well besides Hikari and Takeru but they were always the "special" digimon in the series and they've honestly had way more character development than any other character in the series aside from Taichi so I'm fine with that.

My contrarianism must have reached a new level, because I finally watched Digimon tri. and... well... I LOVED IT!

So, I am coming out of a heavy Digimon month because I had never rewatched any Digimon season. I was a big fan of the franchise early in the 2000, but I dropped it once Frontier started and never rewatched the seasons again.

Late 2022 I rewatched Tamers and was positively surprised to find out how well it held against time, so I ended up trying 02 again now to see if it was really as terrible as I remembered.

Much to my surprise, I found 02 to be actually enjoyable. The writing is a mess, nothing makes sense and the thing is so inconsistent, but still enjoyable.
The biggest surprise is that I recalled the 02 kids to be incredibly annoying, but now I really enjoyed Daisuke. And Miyako probably became my favorite human character in the franchise (the fact I watched it subbed probably helped).

So as soon as I finished 02, I decided to rewatch Adventure as well. And, wow, that shit is GOOD!
No surprise Digimon never managed to be as big, because they nailed it on the first try and could never repeat something like that.
Obviously, the more episode of Adventure I watched, the lower my opinion of 02 got because why it is enjoyable by itself, it's sad to see how much it dropped the ball in every single aspect when compared to the first season.

And then that's where it gets interesting, because once I finished Adventure, it was time to give tri. a second try.

First time I tried it, I dropped tri after the first hour.
And I almost did it again, because that first hour is SO low energy, so pointlessly devoid of any kind of enthusiasm that it took almost 3 hours for me to end it because of all the breaks I took.
But again "much to my surprise", the series really picks up almost instantly after that dull first hour. The first movie is easily the weakest and all the next 5 are pretty great.
Watching it, I really couldn't get the common critiques of it being boring, bleak, "trying too much to be adult"... I wonder if most people, like me, dropped it on the first movie because all that apply to the first, but not really to anything after that.

Having watched it right after finishing Adventure, I really felt like everything was greatly adapted, from the characters' personalities, to the digimon, the themes, the interaction. Of course, this time the series it a bit older, so it's not super happy as it is not aiming at kids, but it's not trying to be "adult" either (not more than Tamers), so nothing felt forced to me.
It really felt like an amazing homage to the original series and I felt like everything worked amazingly well. I finally cared for every Digimon in the group, and the humans also progressed in a very believable way that made them feel real (except Yamato, who is stuck in time and just as annoying as ever).

I feel bad for tri. for all the hate it gets because in the end I found it an amazing love letter to the original series (and by "original" I mean "the original and only the original", because the way it treated the 02 cast is the only big criticism I have. That was ridiculous).

It was really nice reliving my long lost love for Digimon this month.

I didn't personally like Tri, but it's much better than the Adventure remake and Ghost Game. You should give Savers and Applimon a shot.

I'm a huge Digimon fan. I'm replaying Cyber Sleuth at the moment (probably my fav monster catcher game ever, as someone who's played all the Pokemon games)

I just started rewatching Savers, I finished my rewatch of Tamers some days ago - gotta say Ruki and Renamon's relationship is just a joy to watch as it grows.
But nothing compares to Adventure and Tri (I've watched Tri like 20 times, love it so much - it's a comfort show of mine atp).
Adventure 1999 was the first anime I ever laid eyes upon back when I was like 5. I always find my way back to Digimon even if there's been years I didn't really engage with it at all.

Oh and my fav characters from each season:

Adventure: Yamato, Mimi + Gabumon, Palmon, Tailmon
02: Ken, Miyako + Wormmon, Hawkmon
Tamers: Ruki, Jenrya + Renamon, Terriermon, Leomon, Lopmon
Frontier: Koji, Izumi + their spirits
Savers: Tohma + Gaomon, Lalamon
Xros Wars: Kiriha, Nene + Dorulumon, Cutemon, Sparrowmon
Ghost Game: Ruli + Angoramon

I couldn't really get into Appmon but perhaps I'll give it a try again sometime. Ghost Game's story was kind of disappointing since it was just monster of the week for 60 episodes but the evo scenes were nice as well as the fight scenes (I stopped around ep. 35 though)
I just love that Gaomon and Angoramon are voiced by Zoro's voice actor, makes me love them even more

It did its job with me (made me rewatch 3 seasons, watch tri, play Survive), but I admit around the 20th episode I just couldn't keep going. It either needed to be much shorter or be less rigid about the structure of its episodic adventures, because it started feeling like watching the same episode reskinned every week.

Yeah pretty much this. Angoramon is still best boi from Ghost Game though
Did you enjoy Survive? I only played the first playthrough but I want to play one of the other routes too at some point. Shuuji's and Lopmon's AOT moment was... harrowing

There's supposed to be some anime-related reveal in january and since the screencap they used for the news was the last scene of 02, I'm assuming it's gonna be a 02 remake? Secretly I'm hoping for a Tamers sequel instead lol. But I'll be tuning in for sure whatever it is, I just hope it's gonna have an overarching plot 'cos that's where Digimon always shines and shows that it's the best monster anime.

Might as well mention it in here too, but Diskotek Media is finally set to release their project on the Digimon movie rerelease.

$30 overall is actually not too bad considering they had to pull off a new english dub (although they did get a lot of the old english voice actors to come back for it) for their "Uncut" version of the 3 movies. I've always been an English version purist, so I've never bothered really looking into all the Hurricane Touchdown parts that were cut out way back when they combined the 3 for English release.

Then you have the og Japanese audio if you don't care for that version, or even the og english dub version if that's more your fancy.

Hoping this does well enough for them that we can relatively quickly get Revenge of Diaboramon and Runaway Locomon on physical release for the first time ever. They were dubbed, but had very few airings. Maybe they can even try dubbing the no-dub movies too.

The biggest pipe dream is to see them do well enough down the line that they'll eventually be able to finish some of the dubs they've salvaged. Digimon has been pretty lucky in that regard, but Xcros Wars could always stand to get it's final season finished in english. Ghost Games also just got straight passed up on any english dub.

Weirdly enough, I did enjoy the whole thing despite hating half the cast and the heavy light novel aspect. Enough to go through it three times to see the true ending.
