Well with Hikaru and Shimomura both on board we know that at least the music will be perfect.
Kingdom Hearts 3

This is fantastic news, but I'm also a bit surprised. I recall reading Hikaru has grown to hate her popularity with KH or something like that…

According to this: http://www.khinsider.com/news/Hikaru-Utada-To-Return-for-Kingdom-Hearts-III-3452 she turned Disney down around 2009 for them not paying enough for the amount of work she was putting into the music, and because it was hard working with music made for Japanese lyrics and changing it into English. But it seems she is past that now, probably because they're offering her an insane amount to make music for KH3.
-
Not a fan of the vocal songs.
But Yoko Shimomura's voilins! Yeah, I'm definatly wanting more of that.
-
The sound of this game just keeps getting better and better.

I'm really REALLY conflicted here, guys. Once upon a time I loved Kingdom Hearts, in fact the first game is one of the games that REALLY got me into gaming. I hated CoM, I enjoyed KHII quite a bit but it wasn't the same experience. I have since hated every entry in the series that followed… I went out and pre-ordered the Birth by Sleep limited edition PSP bundle only to absolutely hate the game, forcing myself to play it merely to justify the purchase. Not learning my lession I bought a 3DS with Dream Drop Distance being the main draw... I've played about 6 hours of it and want nothing else to do with it, just like BbS.
I'm going to get this game when it releases, but I'm scared that the series just isn't for me anymore. I'm willing to bet the large amount of my distaste for DDD comes down to handheld gaming, don't ask me why but I can't stand handheld gaming. That's why I'm glad to see things like the Vita TV in which I can play those games like a console game. Course I had the component cables for the PSP and it didn't really help my experience with BbS... I really hate that game.
-
I don't know. I strangely liked CoM once I got the hang of it. I haven't been able to play DDD. I liked BBS mostly for the story. Gameplay wise, BBS was ooookkaaaay. I think my main dilemma with them was that it never felt like the original Kingdom Hearts, namely for the factor of having Disney characters follow you around and having more places to explore and have fun. It always was fun having a party of character following you around.
If there was any difference between KH1 and KH2, it's kind of the fact that in KH1, your allies were actually really useful. Granted, Sora was always the damage dealer, but you could honestly have moments were Goofy and Donald (and the God Tier combat that was Jack Skellington and Ariel) would clear majority for you. It felt like a team effort. Meanwhile, Kingdom Hearts 2, you allies are practically inconsequential, since you are god tier beyond belief.
Also, there was the whole musical Atlantis, Tron motor cycle minigame (I otherwise adored the Tron stage), and a few other bleh moments.
-
Kingdom Hearts I will forever be my favorite in the series. Even after all the hype I had for Kingdom Hearts II when it first released, the sense of adventure and exploration was absent. Kingdom Hearts I got that right. The worlds and their characters felt important and not just a side-show because Sora didn't know where he had to go to find his friends. In Kingdom Hearts II it's like you knew before which world was going to be important before you went there. Kingdom Hearts I had Sora learn bits and pieces as he went along about his friends and his entire situation. And no other entry in the series has captured that again. Birth By Sleep had a similar breakdown, where you could find hints that your friends were there/had been there but the game lost a lot of charm because every world boiled down to five screens and twenty minutes to clear for each character. Dream Drop Distance introduced a mechanic that made combat look cooler, but ultimately made it a little spammy to the point where normal combat wasn't really needed except for a few key bosses. Chain of Memories… took a lot of time to get used to and it's still not that enjoyable gameplay-wise. Gameplay and all aside, the story... derailing and derailing... it's complicated enough and I like the effort Square is putting into these rereleases so everyone can understand the story but DDD added time travel... on top of one of these most convoluted series of all time.
tl;dr KHI introduced simplicity on top of an overarching adventure; II started the unnecessarily complicated turn away from that.

It sounds like it boils down to you not being a fan of handheld gaming… I think KH2 is significantly worse than KH1 but still a good game, and BBS is really good for how it changes up the gameplay a lot, is a prequel to KH1 and has a great story. As for CoM I really enjoyed that actually once I got the hang of the card systems, 358/2 days I never owned, Coded was pretty bad... It's basically a re-hash of KH1 for the DS. And I know many here disagree but I have never found the story quite that complicated to follow along with even in KH2.

I'm crazy excited for KH3. I've followed the series for over 10 years now… I am curious as to how far the series intends to go though. When Nomura says this is the end to "Dark Seeker Arc" it sounds to me like they have more in store after this.... Now that I do have a qualm with. If it does go on past 3, I'd like a new protagonist, not a clone of Sora, a totally new keyblade master with new friends and enemies... I feel like Sora has done pretty much all he can do in the trilogy. Ya know?

I agree that Sora's story should end with KH3, but it won't be as the creator has said that Sora will always be the main character of the series.

The same guy who back in 2006 said Kingdom Hearts II was the END of Sora's story and he wouldn't be the main character anymore. I take everything Nomura says with a grain of salt, cause the guy honestly doesn't know what he wants and he'll turn on a dime.
-
So… I don't know if you folks saw or not... but apparently in 3 Sora has three new abilities...
1. He can transform the keyblade into different forms (I think that's what we saw in the newest trailer when he does the Fire spell-attack dealie-o.)
2. He can summon the various attractions from Disney World (We've seen the Big Thunder Mountain Train and the Boat)
and a 3rd yet to be revealed ability....Pretty awesome stuff.

Hey guys, I did some digging and couldn't seem to find a general discussion thread for Kingdom Hearts related news, and well here we are now. Anyway, for those of you excited for 2.5, the official box art was recently revealed and was drawn by Nomura himself. I like it but I'm curious what you guys might think:
Also, Japan gets 6 different bundle choices. A bit much yes but very nice things with it. I hope we get something similar, and for sure I want them to do another art book thing like they did with 1.5. Link
And if you haven't seen it yet, here's a comparison video of the SD vs HD. I don't know why IGN felt the need to loop the video, but it's done a little past two and a half minutes.
That's all I got, hope to find some other KH fans to chat with in this thread~
-
Ugh that box art. A lot of character look weird. Or have Derpy faces.
Oh, and nomura's coming to comic con.

The 1.5 + 2.5 bundle looks really nice, I haven't bought 1.5 yet so I'm going to hold off on buying it in the hopes that they release the bundle over here too. I prefer the 1.5 boxart but both of them look great and I'm really looking forward to playing final mix for the first time and playing Birth by sleep without the psp stub.
Also there is a Kingdom Hearts 3 thread but we might as well just merge the threads together and make one general kingdom Hearts thread like with the Zelda and Final Fantasy threads
-
I heard from a good friends friend that there will be a Frozen world and Treasure Planet world in KH3
-
Of course there will be a frozen world, because it's the hottest disney thing right now, in the west and in japan.^^
-
Nomura will probably keep delaying the game even further until he's satisfied with Shimomura's rendition of a Let It Go boss battle theme.

Yeah I definitely like the 1.5 art a lot more; it's just amazing art in general. I can see why some people don't like 2.5's art but I don't know, I guess knowing Nomura drew it himself makes it feel a awesome level of artistic to me. You'll really like playing Final Mix, I was so excited to finally play it after waiting for so long I got the Platinum Trophy lol. I'll be working on Re:Com's Platinum soon, then I plan to Platinum both the others when 2.5 comes out.
-
Sadly, I lack the console for 2.5. A real shame, because I was dying to fight the Organization members, in all English too.
Also Terra battle.
-
Why does Xehanort look like Gollum? lol
-
Do the 1.5 and 2.5 editions have japanese voice track? I only played kh 2 back in the day and it only had german audio. I personally would like to have the option between english and japanese.
P.s. Seriously though, I hope the character designer will tone down his overly complicated belts and zippers everywhere designs for the kh and final fantasy games, lol.
-
This sounds like a complaint from 10 years ago. Most of the main series Final Fantasy characters aren't designed by Nomura nowadays (he does the faces of the main characters but he's not the designer of (edit : most of) their costumes), and he was at his most belty and zipperly during the FFX and the Organization XIII days.
-
I am pretty sure kh 3 will be loaded with those designs though.
-

His most reacent designs like them.
-
I'm in the minority that actually likes the KHII.5 Boxart I guess. I think it looks pretty good and represents the included games nicely. Tho, if I had a criticism, I don't like that a few of the characters (Mickey is the best example) are just kinda slapped on there…. Like, the art of Mickey just ends when you reach his midsection, there's no gradient or effect, it's just a flat line where it ends.... like it's a bad attempt to photoshop the picture of Mickey on there. The Birth By Sleep characters are integrated much better IMO.
But I can't wait for this. Getting to play KHII again will be awesome, and I've never played KH:Birth By Sleep due to never owning a PSP, so this'll be nice.
I just hope they release a Limited Edition with the same box dimensions as the Limited of KHI.5... I hate inconsistencies in my collections like that.
-
Similar to how 1.5 had a really good game in KH1 and a bad one (RE:CoM) along with a movie of another bad one it's amusing to see 2.5 has the exact same thing going for it. I'm sorry, but Birth by Sleep sucks. It blows my mind that a popular (or vocal) opinion hails it as the best in the series.
It's KH2 gameplay reduced in scope and budget with a terrible narrative to boot. How you experience that terrible narrative is even worse.
-
I'm a little unsure I'd call Birth By Sleep's gameplay a watered down version of KH2's. As someone who's played Critical mode on KH 2 Final Mix, I found KH2's bosses to be very much about getting the largest string of combos and finishers off in the shortest amount of time. There was a decent amount of strategy as well, but KH2 felt a lot more button mash-ey to me than Birth By Sleep did, where I felt I was utilizing commands and strategizing a lot more than in usual KH games. I dunno, Birth By Sleep just felt to me like the first KH game where I actually felt compelled to use more magic than cure.
I dunno what constitutes a terrible narrative to most people, but to me a terrible narrative is one with no real purpose behind it. When I played through Re:Coded only to find in the end that the entire game's meaningful narrative amounted to one paragraph of actual MEANINGFUL content, I considered that a terrible instance of storytelling.
KH:BBS built on the world of the series I already loved and introduced three characters to me I ended up caring about very much, as well. I'm super excited to play through Final Mix for the first time, on a console, no less.
-
BBS was more fun than KH2 for me. Not even going to say why, but it just is.
But I'm looking forward to playing KH2 with the FM content. It tried to fix things I didn't like about KH2, but not to the extent of BBS. My only gripe of BBS was how absurdly powerful Shotlocks were. -
I dunno, it's just that BBS felt more like an evolution of the series' gameplay, whereas KH2's felt like an entirely different experience. Being different isn't bad at all. In fact, it makes me enjoy both games even more as totally separate entries.
-
In term of gameplay, BbS is my favorite. But overall I prefer KH II.
That moment when you unlock a second scenario in every world.
-
Did Robin Williams gave his voice to the genie in this game ?
-
Did Robin Williams gave his voice to the genie in this game ?
Nope, Dan Castellaneta (voice of Homer Simpson) does Genie's voice in the games, plus in the second (and third?) Aladdin movies.
I think it was because of some kind of paying issue between Williams and Disney, or something.
-
No, it was Dan Castelleneta just like in Return of Jafar and the TV series.
Edit: Shoot, you beat me to it haha.
It was Robin Williams again in the third film. I remember previews making a big deal out of it.
-
Oh really. Are the two voice acting very different ?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Disney's french casting is really good, so good that I never felt the need to watch a Disney in english (as opposed to Dreamworks)
KH I and II had almost the entire french casting, but KH Final Mix is only available in english. -
It's quite noticeable yeah.
Interestingly enough, the conflict was resolved between Aladdin 2 and 3 (he voices the Genie in King of Thieves), and then another conflict arose between Aladdin 3 and Kingdom Hearts, which is why he isn't the voice in the games either.
-
@Zek:
Edit: Shoot, you beat me to it haha.
Hahaha. :P

Ah, I had a feeling.

Personally? I don't think so:
[hide]
Although hearing it 10+ years later….all I can hear is Homer. [/hide]
-
Robin Williams not returning for Kingdom Hearts was another Disney dispute? I figured it was just "We ain't fucking getting a big name star to voice in a random video game."
-
Yeah Disney fucked up on another deal and didn't reconcile with robin til 2009
-
Eh !? I thought everyone likes overly complicated belts and zippers.

2.5 Remix Trailer:

^Jeez, there been so much Remixes, HDs and Final Mixes that I thought that was already made it.

More 2.5 Remix teasers. Game is out in Japan now though.

Hopefully they don't delay it further by developing something for the "NEW 3DS".
-
haha. KH3 switching to Unreal 4.
I guess the Luminous Engine was another hot bullshit boondoggle for Squeenix
-
I don't know if this is worse or better. I don't think we have any actual games on UE4 right now, but if it has the same issues as UE3 did then it's going to suck. They should have just licensed the Fox Engine from Kojima.
Unreal is always pretty easy to use though I guess. But that encourages laziness, which causes or makes worse the issues with the engine.
-
It's good I think. It's easy to use, can create a wide variety of gameplay styles, and will no doubt help Square Enix get KHIII out way faster.
The engine is fine; it's all on the developer.
Also, check out this for anyone who is worried about graphics:
