I finally caught up with the latest chapters after watching the anime. Reeeally enjoying it!!!
Please tell me Tsuyu is one of the favourite characters around here! I instantly liked her character and design and she easily is my personal favourite by far!

Tsuyu is amazing.
She makes frog features look awesome. -
Tsuyu-chan uttering "Ochako-chan" in one of the episodes got me giggling like a little girl for a good while. So damn cute. xD

She definitely is. TV Tropes even has an entry for her under "Ensemble Darkhorse" because of it.

She is my favorite character as well… I just have this disgusting feeling in the pit of my stomach that because she is so well made and likable that it will mean she is actually a double agent or she will be killed (The too perfect paradox). That said her powers are not that over the top, so it is possible it will not happen.
-
! Momo with her hair down and Tsuyu with hair up…oddly satisfying.

Uraraka.
Neat to finally see another hero school.
-
The flustered "you're in love" thing has been done so many times before in manga,
but why does it feel somewhat fresher and less cliché this time around?Possibly because I'm actually invested in all of these characters, and Uraraka has things going for her besides her love life?
Maybe it's even the way Horikoshi draws his panels. The guy has great timing and facial expressions. -

Didn't I see that Chewbacca somewhere?
-
I'd say that Urakara is freaking out, but it's not about her crush, but because of her admiration for deku.
-
so..THIS is gonna be this manga's "chunin exam" o "tenkaichi"?
last tournament was kinda barebone in terms of pure fighting but good from a character prospective,i wonder if this time it will be able to pull out both -
Yeah this feels very Chunin exams, not that that's a bad thing it was a good arc. But this new guy who is supposedly even more powerful than Todoroki really reminds me of Gaara
-
With how huge and hyper he is my mind went to Takeo Gouda of My Love Story/Ore Monogatari.
-
I don't mind Uraraka's crush because it feels beliveable and sincere. It feels natural, as opposed to something like Sakura's case where it's so overpowering that it feels like it is there because it "has" to be there. In this case I feel like it also isn't entirely about her crush, but also her admiration to Deku as a fighter.
It's also how I kinda felt about the Trigger series Space Patrol Luluco's Luluco because she's basically just a girl with a crush, but it was just such a charming and fun series. It's how well-written it is that counts.
-
Heh Uraraka flew without feeling sick. Also i really really hope that other class are not filled bunch of assholes or act in a asshole way.
As for the tournament i hope they have something like 2 teams with both having members from each school and doing stuff like CTF or the Bomb Defuse thing. When you become a hero you might need to group with another hero because of a situation and you will need to be flexible with your power to work with them etc. This would also be great to see other classes personality etc.

You're thinking on the Chewie that's from class B.

It is funny because Aizawa really reminds me of Kakashi looking closely.
And Inasa reminds me of Junpei Inori on steroids.

Knowing that Hori is a super Star Wars fan is surprising that we have only seen wookies look a likes and not other races yet. Although an Jabba quirck wouldn't be pleasant.

Didn't Todoroki and Yaoyorozu skip the entrance exam and get in on recommendation? The one who scored the highest on the exam was Bakugou.

Yeah you're right. Maybe an error in the translations.
-
Maybe it's because in all get flailing about Uraraka somehow got herself and activated her powers. (Least that's what I assumed happened)
She was hiding her own face. That means her "finger pads" (which, as we know, activate her powers) were in contact with her own body.
Didn't Todoroki and Yaoyorozu skip the entrance exam and get in on recommendation? The one who scored the highest on the exam was Bakugou.
Mistranslation: Inasa is supposed to be the top RECCOMENDED student. I'm guessing that means he got a reccomendation for Yuuei, but declined it in favor of Shiketsu.

I can see the resemblance.

I gotta say, Purp. That's one excellent pun.

Ah so this is our first time being exposed to other schools and one that is also considered to be rivals of UA.
Will be really interesting to see how they play off each other in the exams.
-
Well, Japan can't create heroes with only one school. In Manga, I often see two rival groups from West and East and it is usually Kyoto and Osaka I think.
Someone can correct me.

That seems what we're getting, especially with the big guy's speech pattern the way it is. Generally folks from the kansai region get more southern type accents

What I am not liking is that if any Yuuei Student gets a license, I will be sad.
-

Will they eventually have to challenge students of St. Ange and FEAH?
-
What I am not liking is that if any Yuuei Student gets a license, I will be sad.
Why sad? Given the numbers we can expect about half of them to pass at most, I think. I could see more, since a big deal's been made that they're more battle hardened than the norm. I could also see few or none passing because this could be a good time for them to get smacked down a bit.
Oddly enough, when discussing who might pass or fail, I think Mineta actually has a solid shot at passing. That little bit of attention he got from Eraserhead brings to mind the Law of Conservation of Detail and he can come through in the clutch.
-
All Might realizing he needs protecting, poor guy. Hope that gets touched on more.
From what little we saw of the other test students we need more unusual looking characters. Maybe all the weird looking ones are already inside.
Happy McHype is cool. Glad our first spotlight test rival isn't a jerk.

Better hold that thought. The guy is giving off very two-faced/facetious/insincere vibes to me.

Nah. It doesn't seem like he would have any reason to just join the U.A. students during the Plus Ultra.
The shady one is that friend of his.
-
What I am not liking is that if any Yuuei Student gets a license, I will be sad.
The Yuuei is the top hero academy, so they are probably expected to be the school getting the most licenses.
They not get any probably would be the kind of disgrace that would enter the annals of the school, so I don't think that's the scenario we should be expecting. -
Does anyone really understand how the recommendations worked? If Todoroki got in on it, then you'd have to think it was based on his father's, which should be stronger than anyone's that isn't All-Might. I'm hoping we learn what all this means in the next chapter.
-
I don't remember any specific elaboration on the recommendation process for U.A., but you can generally assume it's because of both Shouto and Yaoyozoru's families hailing from families with renowned heroic legacies (although we haven't heard much about the latter's except that they're rich lol, but I might be forgetting something). But the start of the manga did state that there were four students that got in through recommendations, which includes the aforementioned duo and Juuzou Honenuki in Class 1-B. I don't believe that the fourth has been revealed yet though, so maybe that fourth individual was Yoarashi Inasa (although it would be weird to mention that four students got into U.A. with official recommendations if one of them declined in the end, but this is just getting into semantics).

What I'm most interested in by this chapter that not many others are really commenting on is the fact that Horikoshi sensei is going more and more forward with "progressing" the possibility of an Uraraka x Izuku relationship, and while I'm still quite confident to say that we'll be unlikely to get any real relationship progress from them until the last couple chapters of this series probably (whenever that sad and unfortunate date when Boku no Hero finally ends comes ) either way I still feel like he's doing more to illustrate Deku and Ochako have a thing for each other in these past 100 chapters then Kishimoto ever did with any of his characters in Naruto in about twice the length of his series. I mean… It's not much but it's still more then most Shonen mangaka ever bother to do... So yeah I just thought that was worth commenting on... Now if only we could have this kind of progress with the Todoroki x Momo ship that I've been trying to push for several months now grumble grumble...
-
It's also great to see that Horikoshi didn't introduce Uraraka as immediately having a crush on Deku right off of the bat after meeting or after Deku saved her during the entrance exam. While it's definitely not too surprising to see our protagonist get with the first major female introduced in the story (especially since Deku's reaction to talking to a girl was priceless), it's pretty astonishing how Horikoshi as a mangaka actually had the patience to build this relationship up rather than immediately plastering Uraraka as the obligatory love interest and actually let her personality, powers, and character interactions make her recognized as her own individual character in the cast. The audience is not made to actually like and view her character as someone that would be a cool girlfriend for Deku, but a good character in general that would be a nice match for Deku on her own merits that aren't tied down to solely liking him out of convenience. Not to mention that she actually has admirable respect for Deku that isn't founded solely on blind love but actually based on her own personal motivations to improve her abilities and support her family.
You've gotta love Horikoshi's writing, it's actually thought out with enough passion and technique to actually make me believe that it might not experience a downfall in quality and pacing after a timeskip akin to Naruto, Bleach, and Toriko in a few hundred chapters. But even though I shouldn't get ahead of myself in that regard, it's fantastic to see how much the plot has actually been building up its plot threads and character insight over time without seeming spontaneous or pulled out of the blue. It kind of reminds me of how much Oda has planned out the events in One Piece with actual care put into hinting and steadily building up its character connections, motifs, and overall world building (although MHA is definitely not anywhere near that level lol), such as how Shiketsu High got introduced this chapter, Iida's background concerning his family and Ingenium, Shouto in general, and how Bakugou's humorously characteristic belligerence at the end of the Sports Festival being broadcasted live on television actually playing a role in why he got kidnapped by the villains rather than just seeming like a standard gag. I adore this type of writing.
And don't worry, Kareem, that relationship isn't going anywhere. What I'm interested in is actual character development for Mineta. It would be both hilarious and eventful if the pervert actually gets himself some type of romantic side-plot or love interest that actually pays off in making him become, well, a decently respectable human being towards women or something. I know that seems random to mention, but similar to the instances of built-up revelations I mentioned above, it wouldn't be surprising to see that Horikoshi is actually building up this character's peverted nature for something other than pure humor. Even something quite emotional. But that's just me rambling.

That's an aspect I'm really adoring about this manga. The females are distinct, interesting characters with their own charms, goals, cool powers and personalities.
It's been an awesome thing to behold. -

It feels like he is throwing it in for the sake of shonen series containing romance. I very much prefer it when both of them were on equal terms, and seemed close instead of this bs "OMG DO YOU LOVE HIM" crap.

While I am fine with presenting an organic relationship between Izuku and Uraraka, the recurring gag of Uraraka constantly getting freaked out by people that she's in love is getting old. If Horikoshi can switch up the execution and humor a bit to not transform her into Hinata and instead have more natural, diverse, and therefore funnier, moments like how she was a bit jealous of Hatsume getting so intimate with Izuku in her excitement to rework his costume. I agree that the series didn't really need the relationship either, but you have no idea how refreshing it is to actually be tackled with humble pacing in the story and character insight rather than having Uraraka be an obligatory love interest archetype that the protagonist is blind to from the start.
And I immensely agree with that statement, MDL. If only Ashido and Jirou could get more of a spotlight in the plot compared to Uraraka, Tsuyu, and Yaoyorozu. I didn't mention Hagakure because her characterization is so literally transparent lol that she can only get memorably expanded among the cast if she turns out to be the traitor, which is why I'm banking on that reveal (not to mention the onslaught of evidence and how much her power fits).
-
The thing that's been my big question re: Uraraka is "Does Uraraka herself realize she's in love?" Ever since Aoyama first hit her with the bombshell she sends genuinely unsure herself whether she has romantic feelings for Deku or not.
Her flustered denials take on a whole new meaning to me if looked at as Uraraka getting constantly asked a personal question she herself doesn't know the answer to.
-
As much as My Hero Academia can turn standard shonen tropes, cliches, and stereotypes on their head, it's still a shonen manga. The question isn't if we're going to see her and Izuku get together (although Horikoshi can totally make a curveball and have her end up with, I don't know, a better-mannered EoS Bakugou. Actually, I wouldn't really mind that…), but what it's going to take to get her to finally confront her feelings. And that could actually manifest as a major emotional plot point, even on-par with, say, Hinata risking her life to save Naruto from Pain. And I wouldn't really question when either since most shonen manga save these type of "fated" relationships for the end of the series, but I would love for Horikoshi to prove me wrong.

I recently re-read the series from the beginning and the part that blew me away was in the festival when Ochako is fighting Bakugou, and that moment along with what she was talking with her parents was really good and emotional. Her motivation is simple but it's something that i can personally relate to far more than Deku. I want more of that stuff when Ochako is being a character with her own growth and motivation instead of this love crap that , to me, feels like completely shitting on the character work that Hiroshi did in the beginning.
The relationship is an ok idea but i don't want Ochako to be known as main character's "love" interest.
I know that people are praising Hiroshi's female characters and i can agree to a certain point but do note that many of the female cast are still lacking any real character exploration. Many of their motivation for being heroes are still very unknown. And we haven't really had glimpses into their personal lives like we had with Todoroki or Iida.
Todoroki still stands as Hiroshi's best character writing for me. Seeing his internal conflict about not to use his heat side, and his relationship with his father and mother along with showing us glimpses of how he grew up, and what was his motivation was interesting, intriguing, and most of all made me care about his character, and what he will become in the future.
If Hiroshi can achieve even a half of that with the all of class A members than that would be amazing.
-
Of course; and the female characters can indeed get more attention as a whole and Uraraka has had great character moments. But it's a shonen manga. I don't like to have to butcher my expectations to fit a series, but I doubt that we're going to see any of the females get as much attention or feats as the guys. Just the attention they're getting with personal quirks, unique designs, power usage, and emotional insight they've been getting are extraordinary enough for the entire genre lol.
I wouldn't say that it ruins her character development. Especially when her admiration for Deku is not rooted solely in irrational love but through genuine respect and admiration from him as a source of inspiration to drive herself to improve both internally and externally. It at least has a somewhat reasonable basis, and she still has enough individuality and potential plot lines to get character investment that solely isn't tied down to being a love interest.
Don't get me wrong though, I agree that it might have been preferable to focus on them solely as respective classmates on an equal plane. And the relationship theme can EASILY go wrong. But I think that Horikoshi at least deserves a chance to let us see if he can put a positive execution on this compared to other manga from his qualitative track record in this manga.
That is also true. But to be fair, at least he's not trying to cram them all in at once and rush their character exploration like the squads in Naruto. Who were eventually abandoned except for the main trio and Shikamaru just because. When you have a main cast that revolves around twenty characters, not including Class 1-B and now Seiketsu High being introduced, other departments like Hatsume, the pro-heroes, and also an entire League of Villains (we still barely know anything about the previous users of One for All and All for One despite his plot significance), juggling all of that can be extremely stressful and full of regrets. I think I remember Horikoshi even saying in one of the volumes that he wishes that he could work in Ashido more in the plot to shine as a character, which shows that he does care somewhat about expanding his characters. And there are still plenty of guys in the main cast lacking character exploration and general attention if you count Ojiro, Kouda, Satou, Shouji, and Sero, so lack of characterization exposure is not exclusive to the females.
And Todoroki's backstory and development was really captivating. But his personality is still a blank slate to the point that it's recurring joke for him to have emotive opinion lol.
