For Magazine, the ToC doesn't reflect the popularity.

For Sunday, it does reflect the popularity (like Jump), but it is more flexible than Jump (and Magazine); Sunday doesn't axe series like within 20 chapters.

Thanks. Better add this to the opening post, I can see people asking this again if this thread has several pages in a few months.
How do people gauge popularity in Magazine then? And how flexible is the system in Sunday?

..I also feel kinda uneducated because I have no clue what most of these series are. Be Blues! and Keijo!!!!… these and many others are no names in the Western fandom despite being obviously pretty popular (oh well, it's a bit too early to say that given that this is only one week). Does it fluctuate more than WSJ?

For Magazine, if the series get the color page, then it is getting good reception.

For Sunday, I think this magazine keeps the series about one year (or even more) despite of low ranking.

Watase Yuu (author of Arata Kangatari) announced on her blog that she had a discord with her first editor while working the early stage of Arata Kangatari. I don't know why, but it looks like Shogakukan keeps having a collision between the mangaka and the editor.

Jiro Taniguchi is one of the best mangaka in modern times, I feel sad to see him being so low profile in the West.

He is very famous in France, that's why I asked. I recognized his character style immediatly

He has some works published in germany as well, but his popularity just pales in comp. to people like Inoue.

Well he says himself that he had inspiration from Europeen authors. He even worked with Moebius. So it helped in making him reknown here (even a French Movie was made from one of his title…). He is probably the guy who gave manga credibility for those who only saw it as books for spotty teens. I'm a big fan myself and I probably started reading manga more seriously thanks to him.

Harukana Machi-E is a good SoL about possibilities, age, what-if's and a few other things.
Aruko Hito is a brilliant display of how words are not necessary in manga to convey a message.
Kamigami no Itadaki is a momumental epic about climbing mountains, the purpose in life, neverr giving up and realizing dreams.
Ikaru is his collaboration with Moebius, which alone makes it worth reading.
Sensei no Kaban is a good adaption of a famous novel.
Benkei in New York is a Noir movie in manga form.

There are tons of other manga he did and his very clear, detailed, chilled drawing style is amazing as it brings out a lot of emotions in a subtle way. Not many of his works are scanned, though. However, I am glad I paid so much for his works.

Taniguchi only did seinen series, no shounen series.

And most of them are quite short. A few others could be Zoo in Winter about mangaka is also nice. Solitary Gourmet is an interesting food manga. My Father's Diary also a slice of life about a father and a son. Blanco about a wild white dog. Botchan Age is about Japanese litterature of the Meiji period interesting if you like the subject.

How well was Mikami received? His manga seem ok, but not really outstanding and ZKC seems to have a lot of unneeded chapters - just like Strongest Discipline Kenichi.
