Really confused with the translatiosn. They say 2 very different things anout the mermaid knowledge and Noah and thats what interests me.And if Jimbei jions Im pretty sure he wont take zoros place as the second strongest.I get the feeling he is equal to sanji .Oda is going to have to prepare some resl strong opponets for the strawhats now.
Chapter 648: The Path Towards The Sun
-
-
That was really good, very touching scene at the end. Pappug was awesome.
-
@Massimo:
good to know I'm not the only one
I have no one to nerd to before I go to work. Got We Go! on pretty loud though.
-
I think next week we'll have a jinbe miniflashaback ala brook, and in two 2-3 chapters we'll get "the ninth person"
-
Wiper looks like a BOSS.
-
The cliffhanger does have me worried that something's gonna show up and make it so we don't get an answer from Jinbe or that he'll say no. I'm not celebrating just yet.
See that feeling is at the back of my head. Right now it's party time, either way that chapter fired me up, especially bringing Roger into things. You know some real shit has gone down if Roger is brought up.
-
Oh, this arc is NOT ending in just a few more chapters. Too many loose ends to tie up.
-
Wow, I love those last few pages! Seeing the story of Jimbie, Arlong, Otohime, and Fisher Tiger come full circle like that is just great to see. Plus, seeing Jimbe give blood to Luffy is a nice moment. If he joins the crew, this will be one of those moments we'll remember for the rest of the series.
Maybe, though I think the "Remember what you still have" is slightly better overall. Though it does mean that Jinbe's now saved (Literally and Metaphorically) Luffy what, 3 Times? 4?
-
Man Arlong looks terrible in that bowler hat
-
I think next week we'll have a jinbe miniflashaback ala brook, and in two 2-3 chapters we'll get "the ninth person"
I Think 649 will be "the 9th" and be Jinbe's mini-flashback and end with him saying "yes". No reason to think Jinbe needs a multiple-chapter flashback, as alot of his past has already been fleshed out.
-
I have been waiting for this chapter for maybe seven years now. I hope Jimbei joins next chapter. Next chapter would be another Jimbei flashback with him saying 'ok' by the end.
-
Oh, this arc is NOT ending in just a few more chapters. Too many loose ends to tie up.
Of course not, but i think jinbe's joining should be settled the sooner possible, and then continue with the story.
-
Jimbe justifying him breaking the law by giving blood was my favorite part.
I'M A PIRATE so awesome ! -
I have to agree with those that say they dislike Oda's use of destiny. I know they've been comparing Luffy to Roger since Loguetown but for MOST of the series, the comparison was limited to personality traits. Smiling at death, staying positive, etc…now it's gone from "Luffy has the same values as the pirate king!" to "Luffy is literally wearing the same hat as the pirate king."
The series (and Luffy himself) places a huge importance on freedom of choice. Luffy says he wants to be the pirate king because he is the freest man on the ocean. They use their own judgment to determine what is right, not the judgments of the world and its laws (in this very chapter, no less!). I personally find that great message to be undermined because it's becoming apparent that Luffy was somehow "fated" to do all this, and is some instrument of the gods or something instead of a man who decides to do right of his own accord.
In the beginning of the series, Luffy saying "I will be the pirate king" was awesome because it was such an audacious thing to say. Crocodile doesn't even dare say it. In my opinion it's far less meaningful to say it now.
Maybe this is some American part of us speaking out. We ain't never had royalty. I think that's why Americans hate stories of destiny. Maybe it's different for other countries.
-
So are the fishmen going to cut their ties with big mom and go over to the future pirate kings team? All signs point to yes.
-
Last chapter felt anticlimatic but this chapter was a great way to tie everything together. Especially the speech and a fishaman giving blood to human showse island has really been set back to zero.
Lol at people surprised Luffy can hear the voice of all things. Oda foreshadows things for a reason. We'll probably get a Jimbe flashback or something next chapter before he says yes.
-
Good and classic ending chapter for a OP arc. It would have done more for me personally if I gave a fuck about anything that was going on, but hey, I know I'm in the minority of being detached from this arc. Glad the arc is finally over, sucks that Jimbei is joining but I saw that coming from a mile away. I agree brining someone else in after the time skip would have been kinda cheap but I wish we could have just stayed were we are with the crew. It's already hard to balance out the eight characters evenly and adding another, especially someone as one note and boring as Jimbei, isn't going to help. But oh well, hopefully the NW is as good as I hope and better than FI.
-
New nakama Jinbei? I can see the scenarios now.
-
Yeah, it's not like destroying the Noah was an almost impossible task which made Luffy's minimal wounds worse.
He defeated a semi-fodder character, "tried to" destroy a ship, and almost died in the process.
Still not cool in my book. -

Well, I at least hope that the fishman karate dojo will be finally introduced in his flashback. I would like to see the scar stuff, and if is possible how he knew whitebeard and something of fihsman district, If Oda can put most of that in one chapter, then fine.
I was thinking in a miniflahsback that wasn't lineal, like brook's one which changes the order of the events.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So are the fishmen going to cut their ties with big mom and go over to the future pirate kings team? All signs point to yes.
Sure, Daruma already destroyed the candy factory.
-
Of course not, but i think jinbe's joining should be settled the sooner possible, and then continue with the story.
Though, it makes it sound a bit awkward. Usually when a new member joins, it's at or almost at the end of the arc. That way, further character and story developments can be revealed in the following arcs without muddling into the affairs of the current arc.
Now, who's to say Oda will or won't back out from that trend? He's got it set either way.
-
Jinbe…Like a Boss.
-
I hate Hody as much as the next guy, but had he punched Croc with that red hawk punch he'd have to have a fancy new colon made out of sand and six to eight months in the hospital.
I give all the credit in the world to Hody's incredible potential as a tank.
-
Similarities in personality are ok with me. Not inheriting special abilities that will lead to success. Destiny is one of the most overused plot lines and I thought OP was free of it. I was very wrong.
its time for you to read other manga… good luck
-
Pappug owns this arc. You know it.
http://mangastream.com/read/one_piece/99312992/11LMAO, nice catch! Completely overlooked that. I love how it's too random.
Great chapter. The whole transfusion scene was very touching. And fuck yeah Jinbe!
-
Me upon reaching the end of this chapter:
!
I'm absolutely certain that Jinbe will join now. -
Before anyone question's what will happen to Jinbe's crew, let me say this.
There is no crew anymore. It's been two years.
-

Fate merely lays down a path which you can choose to walk, you still need to actually walk it and climb any obstacles that is on this path to make it to the end.
-
I find it too early for Luffy to ask Jinbei for nakama: is this really the end of the arc !? Many pieces are still missing…
Also Jinbei didn't accept yet. I see lots of reasons why he could refuse.
And Luffy being the same as Roger ? Well, I hope in the end he will succeed where Roger failed. And I hope we will see the day when Luffy will have to make a decision that Roger would have done differently. Also, we don't knows if, back then, Roger had a competitor such as BB will be for Luffy... -
Americans hate stories about destiny? That's news to me.
-
The little montage + monologue at the end was very strong. I liked it a lot.
Jinbe joining? I like the character so cool. Though there's still that small chance he'll decide to stay and help his country like Vivi did.
-
Lol at people surprised Luffy can hear the voice of all things. Oda foreshadows things for a reason. We'll probably get a Jimbe flashback or something next chapter before he says yes.
Everyone forgetting "The Will of D"? Could be that its related to this thing to "hear" things. Impossible to say yet. I don't see why would we get another Jimbe flashback. All Strawhats have a dream to find or do something. As for Jimbe, I think we all already know it. He wants to end the racism against fishmen. The second reason i see him joining is that he kinda promised to Ace that he would look after Luffy.
-

true, but i don't see how oda can delay jinbe's joining even further. It would really seems awkward at my eyes
-
So Luffy is basically turning into a Roger clone…
Same Strawhat, can Hear the Voice of All things, etc. etc.
I agree with the rest when they state that I dislike it when protagonists owe their success to destiny rather than hard work.
-
He defeated a semi-fodder character, "tried to" destroy a ship, and almost died in the process.
Still not cool in my book. The semi-fodder character got a lucky hit, which was nothing for Luffy until he "tried to destroy"(half-destroyed) a "ship"(the motherfucking Noah).
-
Then again Oda might pull a Vivi and have him "join" but stay on FI to be the protector of Shirohoshi or something. Unlikely but I'm just looking for any way out of having him on the crew.
-
Jinbei is the right sign for all around what ambitions the Straw Hats have and how they grown up in the past 2 years. I just hope Jinbei gonna work out to be bad ass in his own way and not "watered" doen like Robin after she joined back in the day… (So the "only" thing left for me is a logia type crew member being it anew addition or through finding a DF...)
-
all hail the monster four
-
There will still be a mosnter trio, Zoro, Sanji and Jinbe:ninja:
-

It's One Piece fans like these that make me regret coming here.
-
Well, I've got some bets to collect on, if you'll excuse me.
:)
-
Luffy isn't becoming a Roger clone he just carries on his will. Also we hardly know of Roger's actions and adventures or personal habits. How do we know if hes becoming a clone if Roger is kept in the dark for the majority of the series.
-
Pretty good chapter.
After all these years, we finally learn Luffy's blood-type. I wonder if Oda will reveal the rest of the crew's blood type in the future also?
Caribou ditched the mermaids for the palace's treasure.
That's weird. I would have kept both the mermaids and the treasure.Jinbe is definitely going to join now…unless Oda pulls a trick on us.
-

Just how many?
Caribou ditched the mermaids for the palace's treasure.
That's weird. I would have kept both the mermaids and the treasure. There's only so much he can hold…
-
Jinbe kicks ass. I welcome him with open arms, with the caveat that Oda doesn't shunt him to the sidelines everytime gaggy crew interactions happen.
-
Caribou ditched the mermaids for the palace's treasure.
That's weird. I would have kept both the mermaids and the treasure.Maybe he's smarter than we give him credit for, and that he wagered on what Neptune decided at the end.
-
It was obvious weeks ago Jinbe would join. Anyone who was in denial then are in severe denial now.
-
It's One Piece fans like these that make me regret coming here.
Is it wrong to consider all possibilities?
-
Couldn't of said it better myself. Hit the nail on the head with what I was thinking.
That royalty thing is bullshit. Royalty in this case and context doesn't have a lot to do with stuff in this particular moment. I've been seeing this "destiny" foreshadowing since Logue Town. Manga authors constantly use destiny and that things were "meant to be". Luffy isn't aware of this himself, so if he's ignorant to this destiny then surely it doesn't matter that much that we know the pirate king is going to be him. I don't know guys, I think you're really pushing the boat out on this one. One Piece has had many themes that have been gutted before and anally probed, but this one has been there since Romance Dawn.
Maybe that's just me.
