@joekido:
Well that's to bad, wished he was a good poster
He also accomplished the feat of getting banned from a well known manga download site asking this very question over and over again. First I thought he might be someone of the industry who was joking around but apparantly he was dead serious.
Speaking of viz volumes, I'm disappointed that viz is so secretive about the differences in quality of the digital releases. It is bugging me that the image quality of the digital volumes you can buy directly at viz have a inferior quality compared to the ones on itunes and comixology. You pay the same money on each plattforms (there are cases when kindle is cheaper) but the quality differs depening on the plattform you choose. Unfortunately it is very difficult to adress that issue at viz because most of the time such a question gets ignored or viz tries to avoid that issue by all means. By the way I would not recommend to buy english Shonen Jump through kindle because it seems to me amazon is upscaling the images.
-
This idiot spammed everyone's mailbox with this request.
Funny, I told him I don't read any English versions of the manga, and own the physical volumes but I don't support piracy, he replies to me "you said you don't read them but you say you have volumes, you're contradicting!"
I don't think this fella even knows this is a Japanese comic book.

Can we talk about Viz picking up series?
On October 9th at NYCC2015 Viz announced that they will start publishing the following series:
Seventh Garden
Black Clover
Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter
Everyone's Getting Married
Yona of the Dawn
Haikyuu
Kuroko's Basketball(there could be more, I just looked on twitter)
What I'd like to know is… do these announcements (new manga releases) only happen at comic cons? So, once a year?
How come Viz obtained the rights to Haikyuu (or any other manga series) and not Dark Horse for example. (or any other competing company) ?Lastly, what was the likelihood of Viz picking up these series, did anyone see it coming? Was it predictable?
-
Hm, interesting questions. I'm also curious about a few series. I know a lot of people who read Kingdom, was wondering if Viz has any plans to pick up the series.
I'm also pretty curious about Billy Bat. All Urasawa series in the US have been published by Viz, but Billy Bat is published by Kodansha in Japan. Has there been any precedent for Viz to pick up a series published by Kodansha rather than Shueisha?

It depends on contracts and the structure of the companies. VIz is owned by Shueisha and Shogakukan and therefore they have dibs on titles that are published under Shueisha (e.g Haikyu) and Shogakukan (Magi, Conan). Kodansha US is a subsidiary of Kodansha and have exclusive rights on titles that are published under that imprint (Attack on titan, Vinland Saga). Yen Press e.g has a special deal with Square Enix (Soul Eater) and they even started releasing some titles worldwide, simultaneously to Japan (Kakegurui, Black Butler). It is interesting to point out, that viz has the print rights for Full Metal Alchemist in the US but Yen Press got worldwide digital rights as far as I can tell (I can legally buy - without vpn - the english digital volumes of FMA in Germany). There are also cases that mangakas have special contracts directly with foreign publishers (e.g Prophecy).
Edit:

Because Monster, 20th Century, Master Keaton are Shogakukan titles and Billy Bat is published by Kodansha (Morning magazine)

Shadyagent already explained how the whole race to the rights works but when it comes to expectations, for sports series like Haikyuu and Kuroko, people were skeptical simply because sports manga don't seem to do too well in the west and so don't get licensed very easily. I'm sure a lot of people are satisfied with these announcements.

Speaking of sport mangas, I couldn't believe it when Yen Press announced the licensing of Yowamushi Pedal (First omnibus volume will be released next month ). That manga has over 40 volumes and Yen Press still decided to pick it up - that is so awesome. When the anime was airing the hype was huge. I really hope it will sell well

Absolutely, that was a big surprise. Nice for the fans.

I asked two weeks in a row if the digital volumes 28-46 were fixed in the light of the reprint but I didn't get an answer on the podcast (I only listened to question corner so far): It seems viz does not want to respond to that question although I quoted Alexis public tweet in my question:
Could it be that the question is a little too specific for the podcast? Probably a better idea to keep asking Alexis himself but you might've already done that.
I'd imagine the digital volumes would receive the same treatment anyway.

I asked Alexis personally but he didn't respond so I had to ask the podcast. I just want to know when I can redownload the volumes in question. And I hope maybe he fixed other volumes as well given the list of "mistakes" in his original tweet. Back then volume 73 was fixed quite fast.

- Is Viz Media translating the weekly chapters of One Piece?
Yes.
- How can I read them? Are they free?
You have to subscribe to Viz's Weekly Shonen Jump. It's $25.99 a year.
-
It's also worth mentioning that their is also the 99¢ a week option. If your pinching your pennies.

Wow, that super-thirsty guy is now making Twitter accounts to bug people for those volumes lol

How do you know and where is his account?
His account: https://twitter.com/mutaito8901 - I guess he tweeted to Stephen
That statement made my day:
Edit:
Digital viz sale: Shonen Jump annual subscription is on sale for 19.99$ instead of 25$ and there is a Nana bundle available: volume 1-10 for 20$ . Also, Viz signature titles are on sale until Thursday: 2$ off and viz select (old Tokyopop titles) are 1$ off: http://www.vizmanga.com/ -

Excuse my language, but what a fucking idiot.
-
Yeah, I got the tweet too. At first I thought it was some random fan having questions about the Viz releases…then I realized who it was. Lol'd.
-
At fault are the 4chan comic anons who have ripped (screencaped) the viz volumes 1-23 and 43-75 from comixology (vol 73 of that rip is not fixed and still contains the switched script - people are complaining about that on the net.LOL) and other viz releases. These are the real douchbags.
By the way through these rips it was found out that comixology is offering One Piece volume 1-68 in HQ (the volumes on the viz app are MQ in general) and on itunes volume 1-68 are upscales (starting volume 69 we got nice HQ volumes). I just hope, viz will soon replace the older volumes with HQ release on itunes like they promised a couple of months ago -
I wish Twitter has an edit button to fix my error. I told him that people normally go to the bookstore to read them or go online. But I know that my words are not going to work, however someone has to give him a taste of common sense
-
If you see him tweet you, report him. It actually works.

I already posted that a couple of days ago.

There are holiday bundles for One Piece and other Jump titles (http://shonenjump.viz.com/blog/posts/bundle-up) - Unfortunately the One Piece bundle is only covering volume 1-11). However, I m pretty sure there will be a holiday sale (2$ off) on the whole shonen Jump imprint - Last weeks we got sale on viz select and viz signature, and this week there is a sale for the viz Shojo beat imprint. If someone wants to get his hands on the One Piece volumes for a reasonable price should buy the bundle and take advantage of the holiday sale that is coming soon for the shonen Jump imprint

I'm just hoping for an announcement on the third box set this spring.

Hello:
I'm interested to buy the Digital Viz volumes of One Piece but I have a problem. I tried to buy them via Barnes & Noble but an error shows up saying that I can't buy digital products internationally, meaning that there's specific countries that are able to buy them. I live in Argentina though. Someone please tell me what should I do. Thanks in advance. -
This may have been asked before but… why do all the volumes from 61 onwards have "New World" written on the cover instead of "Fishman Island", "Punk Hazard", "Dressrosa" and so on? This bothers me A LOT!

It makes sense if you think about it, we must walk the path that Dragon Ball Z has paved in times past.
I don't like it either.
-
I want to buy the Digital Viz volumes but it seems that I need to live either on the US or Canada in order to afford them. I live in Argentina though. Someone please tell me what to do.

Argentina? I guess you are the Mutaito guy again?
Just create an US/Canada itunes account and buy US/Canada-itunes gift cards (you will find them on ebay). Via itunes (ibooks) you can buy them without using a vpn connection (I m based in germany and I don't need a vpn connection for itunes purchases on my notebook). Even if you would need one you could easily create a free account on hide.me that allows you to use a canada-vpn connection for free (2gb per month) -

Hello:
- Is this the only possible way for me to buy the volumes?

- No, you could also buy the volumes on comixology, kindle, itunes or the viz app - However you would need a vpn connection for most of the platforms (amazon/kindle might work without a vpn connection as well however you would need a working payment method).
- I guess you do not have an AMEX or an american credit card - therefore gift cards are the easisest solution. Comixology works with paypal though and the viz app might work with google wallet on android devices. There are itunes gift cards with different denominations (10$, 15$, 25$, 50$, 100$ etc.) - buy as much as you need to purchase digital volumes. One volume costs 6.99$ - during sales (there is a winter and summer sale every year - volumes only costs 4.99$)

Can I buy the volumes from you instead? That's much easier. What do you say? -
