Chapter 616: "Anniversary of Revenge" Discussion

VDD will be owned like shit and Hodi will be stopped from hi doing after Luffy shows him the right way
I agree, Hodi has alot more character than I thought, The fact that he is young and was in the royal army at some point raises alot of questions.
-
I agree that Hodi will be the main villain.
That is the entire point of the pills - to match up to Luffy when he has no right to (I actually think it's pretty clever as a once off)There has been little to no indication of a mastermind behind it all.
-
I definitely feel that there's more to Hodi, whatever happens with Decken. I find it on the point of unthinkable that his character won't be elaborated upon a lot more at this point, he can't just be Arlong 2.0. Decken, though… honestly, I could see him turning into a more menacing figure than he's been seen to be at this point. That axe throw was rather impressive, he's a complete madman, and perhaps most of all – he touched Shirahoshi 10 years ago, at the same time as the queen was assassinated in broad daylight... and he has what could possibly be the single best ability with which to assassinate someone in broad daylight in the entire series. If that's the way it is, I don't find it unthinkable for him to actually be the arc villain.
My main problem with that, though, is that he is already really close to a confrontation with Luffy. Whenever the main villain confronts Luffy early on in the arc, it's because Luffy is going to be defeated in order to hype them up... and I just can't see Oda having Luffy suffer a loss this early. Especially when Decken is attacking Shirahoshi, whom Luffy promised to protect when she agreed to leave the palace. So depending on what happens next chapter, it may kill Decken's chances for me. As for Hodi, it's not -unthinkable- for him to be the big bad, especially with the pills seeming tailored to pump him up to be a legit challenge without diminishing the SHs' strength - and having a bunch of officers with intricate and unique designs that seem perfectly set up to fight the SHs, as well as the long-since foreshadowed greatest swordsman of FI to face Zoro - but I just doubt it because of... well, again, I can't see him being Arlong 2.0 and this arc accomplishing nothing in the way of reconciliation. It would just seem extremely odd for Oda to do that at this point. So, that's why I doubt him as the main villain, unless maybe this arc will have a different sort of story progression where the main villain actually is beaten early but a great deal of time afterwards is spent on flashbacks and character development instead. But I don't really think that Oda will drastically change his formula.

this is really great i mean luffy has developed techniques and done things that increase his power but slowly kill him, so its great to see someone else do the same for luffy

Or… Oda might want to change the layout of his ''typical'' arcs. So, Decken could just get to Luffy and then come back later. I don't know, just saying that there's little to no indication that this will be a repeatable arc. In my opinion at least.
-
Haha that irony did'nt dawn on me until now :D
-
So, Decken could just get to Luffy and then come back later.
I know, that's technically possible. If so I guess they'd have a quick fight where they both realize that the other guy is really tough, or something like that. But I'm honestly not sure Oda wants to do even that this early on… now, it's not as if Luffy has to steamroll everything with no difficulty at all, certainly not, but I have to say that I do expect him to be quite notably superior to his opponent in this arc. We are at the point of him proving his worth after having trained for 2 years, after all (and all the other Strawhats as well, of course... though Usopp's rather panicky "Who are those super-strong looking guys!?" exclamation this chapter does make me wonder if I should change my expectations).
-
I think you guys are not respecting Hodi's design honestly, he's wants to take over the fishman island and is hell bent on enslaving humans. now I know Luffy's, Zoro's, and maybe even Sanji's fights won't actually push them to the limit but it. but they will be pushed Hodi looks like the type of person that will go all out if he hits a wall. dont sleep on the pills all I'm saying

Well I think you're underestimating Oda if you seriously think he went through several arcs emphasizing fishman slavery only to make the main villain of a highly foreshadowed arc Arlong 2.0

refresh my memory but how many times has fishmen and mermen slavery been mentioned by Hodi or his crew. please I'm not trying to be sarcastic
-
Even though Hodi is too much like Arlong for his own good, a character like him was going to appear anyways. It wasn't like every Fishman we will meet will think of Arlong as a pariah, quite the opposite seeing on Jones' crew seems to be in the dozens plus, showing clear and rather strong anti-human feelings run strong on the Island.
But, since it's nine chapters in since we've gotten here, it seems very likely he's not the endboss, unless this is going to be a short one, which is doubtful.
-

By Hodi? No, by Oda.
-Saobody
-Amazon Lily
-Impel Down/Marineford with JinbeArguably Water7 brought up fishman discrimination hence why Tom was so easily framed.
It's been a constant recurring theme for several arcs and Oda didn't pull that shit to make merfolk and fishfolk look good vs. the tenryuubito only for Luffy to beat up another fishman supremacist.
-
Also, Hodi and his gang has been seen mentioning Fisher Tiger on two occasions, which is totally setting up for an epic flashback with Tiger, Jimbei, Otohime, Arlong and who knows what and who else. This is the arc in which we finally get the big history lesson on fishmen-human relations, where we get to see the faults of both sides that led to today's situation, and - or so I think and wish - a process of reconciliation is begun, most likely with the Strawhats inspiring the change. Even that seems to mirror Skypiea, where they ended a war that had raged without cease for 400 years. They always seem to really help out the places they go to, and I just have a hard time imagining them sailing away from FI all goody-goody and the relations between fishmen (more accurately, the ones in Hodi's group) and humans remaining as sour as ever with no hope of change in sight. It would just feel… wrong. And what could really be a better change than Hodi turning over a new leaf at the end of things? It just doesn't feel right at all for him to be Arlong 2.0 and remain Arlong 2.0 with these possibilities on the horizon.
-
I expect the flash back to be one of the longest ever, if not THE longest
-
I don't if its been suggested but what if Hodi is Tigers son. What if he didn't know who his father was but was told by someone while he was in the army. This could be what made him leave the army as well as increased his hatred for humans.
-
He could be, but it seems that very few characters have blood parents or strong relationships with them. It's more about adoptive parents in One Piece.
-
By Hodi? No, by Oda
So Hodi hasn't mention nothing bout the discrimination or slavery, now I know he'll eventually talk about it. What if Oda mention all hate and struggle of the the "fish people" to only strengthen Luffy and Jinbe's relationship, and Hodi is just using the discrimination as a justification for what he is doing. I'm sorry but the way I see Hodi is just another villain. I really can't wait to see how this is going to play out. I do hope Oda hits us with something we've never seen but I won't be a AGOG and say I'll be disappointed if he doesn't hit us with something incredible I'm still going to follow One Piece. That being said I can't wait for the next chapter

That's ridiculous.
There is absolutely no point to Oda constantly trying to make fishmen look good, to make them look like most of them are normal just like everybody else, to show they are treated as less than human in Saobody and will be snatched up on sight.
For what? Arlong version 2?Oda is a good writer, he knows how to foreshadow and he's been hitting us with FISHMEN ARE OPPRESSED LOL for several arcs. He is clearly not going to make fishmen supremacists the main villains once again.
And I can't believe you guys insist Hodi is so evil for keeping pirates off fishman island. Remember what Jinbe said about pirates and fishman island.
-
Maybe instead of going into the big fight right away we will get the fisher tiger flashback
-
Could be nice, since the big action came pretty fast in this arc… But that would really break the mood.

It only appears that the big action is happenign really fast. I bet we'll get a bit of action and the real stuff wont be until much later.
Ok something just came to mind. Franky is an old man in his 30's. No way Den is so young that he is under 30, I wonder have any male split fin mermen been shown yet? I don't think males can split their fins at 30. Same thought applies to Neptune. Any thoughts?
EDIT
Thought I was in a different thread, sorry for the double post. -

Thought I was in a different thread, sorry for the double post. They can split their legs at will, as Kokoro have shown. Maybe Den doesn't choose to do it. We have to wait and see, if males really can't do that

nope the longest FB will be Roger's
-
Was Arlongs last name Hitler?

EDIT
Thought I was in a different thread, sorry for the double post.Probably see it when its time for some Merman to seriously fight. Maybe Fukaboshi will be the first it not Neptune too. They have no reason to walk around on two legs so close to water everywhere they go. Obviously having tails its more natural for them than legs.

BTW: which was the longest FB so far?
We have
-Noland/Kargara
-Robin's
-Franky's
-Brook's
-Luffy's/Ace'/Sabo'sI've left out Chapter 0, Sanji's, Nami's, Usoppe's, Zoro's and Bibi's cause they didn't seem as long to me as the ones above.
Can someone look that up and count the chaps in the FBs. I'm really interested which FB is the longest.I'm so lookin forward to a FI-FB that has Fisher Tiger, Otohime, Jinbe, Arlong and maybe VDD and Hodi in it! I don't care if the FB is the longest, I just want it to explain and answer all our important questions in this arc. IMO Oda won't disappoint us. He really brought some mindblowing stuff in Franky's FB and revealing Brook as a pirate from the crew Laboon is waiting for.
He will blow our mind again this time, I'm sure. -
Well we'll just have to wait and see, the arc is still young I just hope the FB is not longer then actual present time part of the arc
-

It never is anywhere near as long, judging by FBs across the series as a whole.

yea but judging by what everyone is saying bout Fisher Tiger, the queen, Jinbe, Arlong they're excepting answer in the flashback. in truth we all are but i think there's to many questions at the moment. some that don't really need to be answered right now. I loved Skypia and Robins flashback. right moment right time. I wasn't a fan of Luffy's recent flashback. too long in my opinion. also brought up dumb theories honestly. maybe if i reread it I'll understand were everyone's coming from
-
The history of Fisher tiger and the whole FI will be for sure one of the most sad ones.
Poor Hordy has struggled his entire life

How could you forget Chopper's flashback, it was one of the best moments in OP!
-
Off the top of my head I think Luffy or Robin's is the longest, with the Norland/Calgary story as 3rd. Franky's might sneak into the top 3 as well, but I think it was a bit shorter. I'm fairly sure these are the longest four, because they had whole volumes devoted more or less entirely to them - "My Brother", "Declaration of War", "Tom" and "We'll Be Here".

Dr. Hiluluk said '' I will die when people forget about me… '' He killed him :ninja:
-
I just hope Zoro doesn't get handicap or distracted. I just want a healthy Zoro to fight. I think he will have to protect people or something. Oda normally never lets people go all out at the start of arcs.
-

Everyone has to forget, not just one guy =.=" Oda has made Hiluluk immortal by having a ridiculously popular manga that features him as a character at all.

hope big mama wont be a fat ugly pirate woman

I hope Sanji won't get a handicap like always everytime Zoro has one as well

Maybe someone brought this up but I have 3 issues with this chapter
1. Who opened the pathway that le hodi and them in.
Considering they sent in the humans to open it up and they were all defeated by zoro.2. Where did the three brothers go? Were they not standing at the only entrance? they just so happened to disappeare and hodi and them had an easy in.
3. If VDD could just ride an object through the barrier why didn't he just throw a ship in with all of the fishman on it?
Anyone ever knowtice that there are a hell of a lot of inconsistencies in odas writing style as of late? (One peice is still number one)

I don't think i really care lol. But you sure VDD can lift a ship :/ ?
And also the brothers might have gone off to search for their sister.

Your looking for inconsistencies that are not there.
Though the pirates were defeated if you payed any attention, one of them with his last ounce of strength managed to pull the lever to open the gates.
The brothers were there and were then told by Zoro to go find his crew. They left.
VDD might not be able to lift a ship, or maybe if he threw one of their vessels no one wants it to get trashed on the way there. You ever think that Hodi may want the castle to himself, he does want to over throw the king after all. Also they threw the humans because they were expendable, there is a chance in the eyes of the characters that someone could die if they were thrown there, either by themselves or a ship I imagine. They were crashing into a steel tower after all. Hodi can throw coral now and ride it because chances are his target is out in the open and wont be blocked by something massive.

Yeah, the first two are just plain "correct", though I don't have to tell you that. As for the third one, I think it is MUCH more likely that the reason VDD did not throw the ship is the latter reason that it would crash and destroy the ship. Lifting a ship, which literally just floats within any sea level, would probably be doable for usopp, so trivial for any fishman, especially one with as renowned power as VDD (the fruit can't be his only up-side, if he's a captain).
Lifting things underwater is just "easy" >.> That's why Robin's giant hand-made-of-hands could push the Sunny even when she lost a lot of her power by said hands being underwater.

. What? No. The brothers are off to find a robot an evil gurl a racoon and a perverted imp. I think it's obvious that one of the pirates opened the gate and they weren't all defeated by zoro. All the fishman are in different designated areas so vdd must think he has enuf people with him. I don't see inconstancies I just…..

Why have so many readers missed the panel where one of the pirates was shown collapsed over the gate switch? How quickly do you guys speed through the chapter? And of course the brothers aren't just going to wait idly by the entrance like a bunch of lackadaisical buffoons. They're coordinating the search to expedite the demands of the SH crew.
-
… the fuck
Seems liek you never noticed, that everytime Zoro was "handicapped" Sanji was as well.
Starting Baratie
1. Let himself being beaten up by Pearl to protect Zeff and afterwards he fought Gin
2. Sanji had to save Luffy and swim under water against a freaking FISHMAN.
3. If anyone says that Zoro was handicapped against Mr 1. Sanji was handicapped cut Mr 2 was using Nami's tits againt him… LOL
4. At EL Sanji let himself being beaten once again by Khalifa before facing Jabura.
5. At TB he had to protect Nami against Absalom
I just hate people talking. OMG poor Zoro is always handicaped and never can go full out...
-
I did miss that panel. Appreciate that. I am so glad there is a op community to talk this stuff with. Forgive me if I'm beating a dead horse but when did we see the brothers actually leave to go co ordinate the serch. I thought they just sent guys out. Also wouldn't be sorta stupid for them to just leave the only entrance to where their father is being held… open?
I can accept the explanations for vdd.
Thank you so much for the quick responces! -

The fight between the pirates and Zoro, which resulted in the gate opening, happened after the princes left the gate. -
