Of course you are, it's the game we should've got to begin with.
I still don't get why a lot of you guys buy the original one when you all know the inevitable better re-release is coming out anyway. Can't you just wait? lol..

Because they've never done this with Marvel vs Capcom. Granted, they've done it with Street Fighter, but Street Fighter =/= Marvel vs Capcom.
Also, if people hesitated to buy the vanilla version, then the sales might not be that much to warrant a re-release…...that's something I guess the developers would say.
That's something that bothered me with Ultimate. Not that an upgrade would be released but wether Capcom knew they're releasing a beta version of the game and hoping that the sales would be good enough to pitch an early updated version.
Also on the subject of DLC, I think Capcom learned from their mistake in releasing info about DLC characters (though admittingly, it was Gamestop that did it) right before the release of the game, especially when we found out that most of their data was already on the disc. So I think DLC characters will come but we'll be informed about it much later than usual. (still...it's one week left until the official release)
A cool tidbit in the game is that if you put P.Wright in Japanese his word bubbles turn into Japanese characters.
I'll be getting this game for Christmas.
I want it earlier but waiting is a good idea with Capcom… they always seem to do something crazy with their games just a little bit after release. Perhaps they will put Ulimtate as being downloadable off X-Box Live? Or is that impossible?
Either way, waiting till Christmas :P
Also... I've heard FireBrand is the worse character... which really blows... :( he looked so fun, but if he's not good, then I doubt I'll use him...
After playing this for a while I'm not getting it. Even used I will not purchase UMvC3.
Wana elaborate there, or is it more of "It's cool to hate on this game, so I am"?

Not at all. I feel that this update is not worth anywhere near the money they're charging for it. Of all the Capcom characters I only liked Frank West and, somewhat, Phoenix Wright. The Marvel side is quite different as I only dislike RR but the overall changes of this game just furthered my fear that all the hours I spent on Vanilla would be wasted and they were. On top of everything, everyone says Vanilla was a beta and after playing Ultimate I have to say it truly was. 90 percent of the stuff people knew has been altered and you may think these slight changes don't affect anything but they really do.
So basically, I'm not buying this because the original game I've spent over 50 hours on seems like it never existed because everyone has been changed. My team has dropped drastically and the new fighters aren't very fun. If I'm not having fun and feel as though I've wasted my time I'm not gonna spend an extra 40 bucks on it.
How does there being a new game replace the 50 hours you already enjoyed? MAke it as if it never existed?
Dynasty Warriors 7 sucks but it doesn't retroactively put hundreds of hours I spent on DW 3-6 a waste. Its just another iteration of the game.
Super Mario World didn't automatically replace the experience of Super Mario 3, and Mario 64 doesn't automatically replace that.
Virtua fighter updates completely incrementally. Only two new characters every game, and everyone else's movesets (which have hundreds of moves in them) all get tweaked a little bit.
Sonic the hedgehog has had a decade of horrible 3-D games, but its 2-D games are still great and hold up.
Doesn't change the old games, or make the new ones less worthwhile, or the time I put into them?

Because everything has changed so all the combos and such I learned are useless for the most part.
Dynasty Warriors is a rip off to me so I have no comment.
Let me say it like this: If you spent 60 dollars on a "Mario World" that felt unfinished, unpolished and had many problems then 9 months later they came out with a "Super Mario World" that was the complete thing wouldn't "Mario World" feel like a waste of time and money?
And Virtua Fighter is pretty much dead now isn't it?
Nostalgia and the fact they were actually good/complete games. Again, I am not spending 110 dollars on a "complete" game.
Edit: Also, you're listing sequels as opposed to an "upgrade".
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is an upgrade, not a sequel.
And fighting games are a bit different, Robby.
Generally, unless there's some big schism in the community, you want to be playing the latest and newest to keep up with all the new strategies, combos, and changes. New information that comes out will only be for the new game, barring some old-school revival. The spirit of fighting games is keeping up with the competition, even if you never plan on playing the game competitively. Newest and latest are the words that tend to rule here.
When Capcom releases a marginal update to an existing game and the community follows to the new game - from Street Fighter III: New Generation, to 2nd Impact, to 3rd Strike – from the first Darkstalkers to Night Warriors to Vampire Savior, the competition for the old game dries up. If you're talking about a game with an online fighting component, the community goes to the next game when it comes out. Unless Competitionbros plans on playing MvC3 matches vs the computer or friends at home, ultimately the entire point of a fighting game - to face off against other opponents - slowly dies. The competitive aspect changes the scenario you put forth pretty significantly.
It's not like playing Mario at home by yourself, or Sonic, or God of War. Fighting games are constantly evolving and time put in can be swept away just like that with these upgrades and patches, and you and the community are supposed to evolve with them. They aren't binary. You're not going to go back to Super Mario World and find out the jump physics are different. And it's a bit different when you've got a game that releases a sequel maybe once in a year or two years. Games like Virtua Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Calibur update only rarely.
I'm not saying that that makes the enjoyment gleaned from the old games worthless. Fighting game upgrades happen - such is the way it goes. But in the case of Ultimate MvC3, released only months after the original with all the content the original was supposed to have, it's a bit understandable how sour someone might be about this particular game, under these particular circumstances.
UMvC3 is the better game - it's where the community will go. But if he says the new game is not worth his time or money, I understand. He's got legit reasons. He played it and doesn't feel by getting it he's getting his money's worth.
If he feels cheated, I can't blame him.
It's a really sucky situation.
Even if I don't feel completely fucked over by UMvC3, I do by several other things Capcom has done to me.
I'm just really not happy with them. Street Fighter X Tekken is the only thing that has seemed to be going in the right direction with them, and even that is starting to seem unsteady.
I adore Capcom games, but I'm really peeved with Capcom.
And Virtua Fighter is pretty much dead now isn't it?
Sure. (But it does have a new update coming out summer of next year.) And its never been as popular as other fighting games. But it used to have sporadic updates about once a year that would change a character's moveset radically, or tweak things that you were used to and forced you to completely rework a character's timing or a preferred move or counter a new thing. It was still a fighting game. It took me months to get used to Shun having to drink between attacks to power himself up, but it came with the natural incremental tweaks in the franchise.
If you spent 60 dollars on a "Mario World" that felt unfinished, unpolished and had many problems then 9 months later they came out with a "Super Mario World" that was the complete thing wouldn't "Mario World" feel like a waste of time and money?
That's actually EXACTLY what Sega did with Sonic 3 back in the day. They released it, missing several levels, and without the ability to play Knuckles. Sonic and Knuckles came out 8 months later, and improved on that game in every way, put the lost levels back in, finished the maps that were unfinished, and let you go back and enjoy it fresh, bigger and better than before. (And improved Sonic 2 in the same stroke, while it was at it.) And you HAD to have both games to get everything out of it.
It was pretty great. Granted, we didn't know it was broken or unfinished at the time, it just felt short.
I can't imagine what an incomplete unfinished Mario game is like, Nintendo is pretty good about not messing up in that area.

I understand all that. I understand not wanting or agreeing with the new game or liking any of the new characters. I just don't see how it instantly makes the old one worthless. But then, I don't really do the online competition thing and I get by just fine using the same games for years with friends that also played the same games. Hell, I never really moved on to Darkstalkers 3, 2 is still my favorite.
I also suppose that after Street Fighter 2/Championship/Turbo/Super/Hyper, or Alpha 1/2/3, or Darkstalkers 1/2/3, or King of Fighters 1-13, where the difference between update and actual sequel is pretty negligable for the most part, and that with some franchises, you'd get nothing BUT updates for years and year. Where you go out and buy a new game for mild upgrades, for a couple new characters or move tweaks, maybe some new background. Where an annual update is basically the same thing as sequels where the franchise is concerned, just reusing old assets, and depending on the franchise.
How do the Madden games work, where they have a new game, every year, dated by the year? Are any of those sequels? Or are they all just "updates" to the game that started coming out in the 80's on the NES? What about anime based fighting games like naruto and Dragonball, which have a blatant "2" and "3" slapped on them, denoting them as sequels… when they're really just upgrades to the previous game coming out a year later with a few more generic characters, while retaining all the old characters and movesets with minor tweaks? Where's the line?
I dunno. Just feels that this sort of tweak was kind of... inevitable? from Capcom? And that it IS the blood of fighting games to restructure, rebalance and tweak with each new iteration. SOmetimes it screws over a character you loved, sometimes it fixes them, sometimes it adjusts a quirk you had gotten used to, for good or ill. Its what they do.
Virtua is coming out with a new update this or next year and still being played but mostly in Japan.
Coming off of Super Street Fighter IV, the fighting game community felt that the much lauded features that game had should become industry standard - for all fighting games. Comparatively, MvC3 was a big step back. Surely there was a 10 year hype that this game could probably have never lived up to, but even so, Capcom was shady about the game, and promises they made with it. It's actually a case of increased communication between fans and the developers seriously biting the company in the ass. Back in the heydey of fighting games, we didn't really have a choice in whether Capcom made the next Darkstalkers, or Rival Schools, or Alpha game. We were consumers only - but I don't think the current Capcom was expecting today's fans, who demand a higher standard. If we knew that Sonic 3 was an unfinished game - you can bet & Knuckles reception would've been different. In modern times? Surely. Look at how people felt about FFXIII!
When a game feels like a significant upgrade, you don't mind paying for the next iteration. I for one, wouldn't buy a new Madden game every year but sure enough, there are folks that do.
But when a game feels anemic and barebones - like the company that created it made a conscious decision to hold back on basic features that the later versions of its other franchises have - buying the upgrade just to bring yourself up to par feels like a con. There's a breaking point, and for many, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is it. A company has got to evolve with its consumer. Even one that supposedly "gets it" like Capcom.
I can guarantee you that from now on, people will be wary of buying the latest Capcom fighter right out the gate.
What this means for the company and community will remain to be seen. But I don't know that the result will be good.
From everything Capcom says about the game, all this stuff was intended to be incremental DLC and patches to thegame released over time, but the Earthquake/Tsunami in Japan caused a disruption in the release schedule.
That's why they decided "Well, we keep re-releaseing Street Fighter games (SFIII, 2nd Impact, 3rd Strike. SFIV, Super SFIV, Super SFIV Arcade), so why don't we do the same with MvC3 now? Since we have enough content to make for a new game disc"
Considering I've watched this company do this with every iteration of every other fighting game franchise they have ever done, this comes as absolutely no surprise to me and I'm fine with it. Especially because UMvC3 is only $40.

But S&K's expansion came with twice the amount of UNIQUE levels, a new character, the ability to play that character in an older game, and a bizarre opportunity to play mini-games by searching through all of your Genesis games and seeing which ones have different effects. It was a cool fucking game, and it came out in 1994!!!
It's 2011, and what do we get? 12 characters, eight stages that are revamped versions of already existing stages, a small new look, some move changes, and a mode that should have existed since the beginning. The character endings are the unchanged.
I see little excuse for this.
I know it sounds stupid to compare to Super Street Fighter 4, but already, Super Street Fighter 4 is a game that only requires you to use 1 character, and that upgrade gave an additional 10 characters, which is two away from UMvC3's additions. It not only included Spectator Mode, but a mode that let you watch random, recorded matches, start your own tournaments, enter team battles, and even mini-games that were a throw back to the classic Street Fighter style. Every returning character got a new ending to Arcade Mode, a new ultra attack, new battle quotes, some new rivals, and the option to turn on individual character themes for a game that had a mother fucking bad ass soundtrack (as does MvC3/UMvC3, though).
I'm seeing little excuse for UMvC3's lack in upgrade. Again, Sonic & Knuckles wasn't much, but that was about seventeen years ago. Adore Sonic and Knuckles, but it's not the same.

….......
Just because they've done it with many of their games doesn't make it right.
Super Street Fighter 4 was a fantastic expansion on a game that SEVERELY needed a boost in fun and play-ability.
Meanwhile, SSF4 Arcade Edition is a travesty that gave us horrible balancing and two OVERPOWERED, TOURNAMENT BANNED characters that NOBODY WANTED!
I guess I'm just used to sequels and upgrades making random jumps forward and backwards with tweaks both big and small at the same time, not always learning from mistakes, not always implementing what was a good idea, small roster upgrades at a time, sometimes making things vastly better or far worse… not always carrying what should be a standard feature even though they've had it for forever...
I've been playing Dyansty Wariiors/Samurai Warriors for the last decade. And for a while they had three games a year.
I'm an MMO player…
Updates to the SAME game is my bread and butter xD
Nobody made the original Marvel vs Capcom 3 anemic but Capcom. There was no earthquake or tsunami involved in that.
Ignoring the fact that they planned to nickel and dime us on basic features is part of the problem.
Of all the fighting game companies, only Capcom does this. Not even Arksys does this.
There's no reason to forgive it in this day and age, when we can actually communicate our wants.
What's the point of having open channels if they serve no purpose?
Capcom has REALLY been dropping the ball on this of late, and not just with Marvel vs Capcom.
Shrug, lol, sigh, roll your eyes - it only lets them get away with it next time.
Whatevs. I expect that you'll get enough out of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 to make it worth your while, and I respect that.
But lately, Capcom is just not for me, and it makes me sad to say it.
They messed up Resident Evil (it used to be the missing link between horror films and its audience), Devil may cry (they want to please as many people), Megaman (they keep trolling him).
Marvel vs Capcom 3 only has 2 attack buttons to please the casual gamers, they are literally showing the middle finger to their old fanbase. The choice of some characters is questionable.
Capcom should focus more on promoting the quality of their games instead of relying on things like DLC.

Actually, I don't have a system to play it on. I'm mostly interested in the "eventually I'll play it" and "oh, that character is in there!" sense, so I'm really a lot less invested than most in this thread.

They also utterly failed in the execution and release date of Okami-den. Not only is it far inferior to the first game, but the released it the same month as Pokemon, Zelda, and screwed over anyone that pre-ordered it by not shipping for nearly two months…

Really? Only two attack buttons? I did not know that. That's kinda lame.
Okamiden cut back on the attack possibilities too…
He's off slightly. It's 3 attack buttons and a "special" button that launches opponents.
Current teams :
I have one more lol post it up in a bit.
I think the real problem is not the fact that it is an updated MvC3, but that it comes not even a full year after the original. "not even 2 weeks dead", etc etc. It's too soon. People feel like they haven't yet got their money's worth out of vanilla, and they don't want to have to pony up 40 bucks to move on to Ultimate.
If this was announced right now, with no news of it before hand, I can guarantee you it would be lauded as a good move, to fix all the stuff people don't like about Vanilla, and to add all the sorely needed features. It would come out a little over a year after the first one, and by that time people would be ready for a rebalance.
Because by that time, people would be calling for a revision. People would be wanting more, and Capcom would be responding to that demand. As it is, Capcom just kind of announced that this would be a thing, and everyone has to deal with it. To quote Adam Jensen, "I never asked for this." It feel like a rip-off, because Capcom obviously had this planned when they released vanilla. It reeks of money-grubbing, like the stand-alone movie that somehow ends with a cliffhanger, because of course it wants to get a sequel, regardless of whether anyone wanted one or not.
Sarus made this for my Tumblr blog, but this is definitely going to remain my main team.
It's a shame about the whole situation really. But I'm a dirty whore who needs to beat up my friends with Captain America, Spiderman and Viewtiful Joe (Team "Zero to Hero"). I hope you all can forgive me.
Toshi, where are ya getting the full body shots of the winposes? I can only find the small ones on Eventhubs.

Forgive you for using America's best, Spider Pimp, and…...
…..I hardly see how that's a bad thing.
Or even more Viewtiful:
I guess it's sorta a good thing I didn't actually buy the previous MvC3 so I won't feel like I'm wasting much money buying this one, if I did I'd feel extremely cheated.
This Raccoon fella makes me want to buy this game.
Too bad, I'm not going to just because of Megaman….and because I'm buying NCAA Football 12 instead.
Oh wow Vergil.
A certain King said this game "SUCKS" and Rin, add him on XBL/PSN.
Who and what and when now?
How can I add someone whose information I don't even know?…
And I don't have Ultimate yet anyway XP
Just finished playing 2 rounds of arcade mode before my roomie's batteries ran out. I've found out two things:
Just finished playing 2 rounds of arcade mode before my roomie's batteries ran out. I've found out two things:
- Phoenix Wright is probably my best character so far
- I still suck at most fighting games
Keep at it. It took me forever before I was able to actually body people with V. Joe, Cap and Spidey (not all on the same team, just harder characters to battle to Tops with)
- Phoenix Wright is probably my best character so far
Hey do you play with a regular pad controller or arcade stick? I'm also maining Wright and it's so difficult to activate Attorney mode since I keep doing his sneeze attack instead of going into Attorney mode. XD He's awesome but I don't want to keep getting beat up by other players just because I can't always go into Attorney mode. It's mostly less than 50% that I get it right.

but… attourney mode is just double-tap down and press S. I don't think an arcade stick will help you with this one, it mostly helps with the rotational inputs.
and I'm having a ton of fun with this game. Dr. Strange is great, I love bouncing that fireball between those pyramid thingies. I can't make Hiryu do any sort of work for me at all, though, which is disappointing.

I'm just using my roomie's regular 360 controller. I don't really have any issues changing between modes personally.
I have a hard time remembering Wright's "Press the witness" attack or whatever it's called (the one where he walks forward into the enemy while reading a piece of paper).
My main team so far is Chris, Wesker and Nemesis.
I definitely like all the changes that were made to Chris and Wesker, Chris' prone fire is much faster, his shotgun is easier to use, he dashes better, and Wesker's Jaguar Kick is much more useful in this game. They both feel like much more solid characters than before.
Nemesis is a freaking monster, literally and figuratively, its seems like he's designed mostly to play from long range with his rocket launcher and tentacles, but once he starts a combo up close, he can be incredibly damaging.
As far as other new guys, Ghost Rider and Iron Fist seem pretty cool, Rocket Raccoon is hilarious and Phoenix Wright might have the "broken" potential, but he requires a SHITLOAD of micromanagement to use effectively.
Not bad so far.

Spit Take
Wesker has been a beast since day one and in UMvC3 he's a monster.
He is less effective in UMvC3 but that doesnt mean he still isnt a threat just easier to beat and get out of his stuff.

You get outta his stuff and punish him and he just gets faster and stronger because of it.
I bought the game and it is very awesome :D
I enjoy playing the new characters and Galactus Mode
I hope they make a 3rd Version of MVC3 with more characters
I hope so too.
I kind of like Iron Fist and Ghost Rider, gonna see how I can make them work as a team…
I really wasn't on board for Iron Fist because I thought his costume looked stupid, but messing around with him he's not bad. He doesn't really have any air game, but he's pretty good.
