You can use anything with any character, and you increase the one stat of your choice with each level. Which class you pick really only matters at the beginning. Pyromancer is really strong at the beginning, while thief seems to have the most endgame strength since it gets the Master Key plus a different gift to start the game with.

I'm currently in the Undead Burg. I started as a pyromancer.
Any tips on how I should progress my character? I sort of get overwhelmed by choice in games where stats are up to me.

I don't have much experience with mage characters but I don't think you'll need that much endurence; all the caster gear I come across is quite light. Experiment a bit with and one hand weapons like rapiars since you'll be able to get weapon upgrades that get a damage bonus based on intellegence/faith (Not sure where pyromancy falls in) Vitality is a good stat to upgrade since it can mean the diffrence to being dead and barely surviving.
-
From what I've gathered pretty much every build should be using Vitality, Endurance and the Stamina one.

Actually Pyromancer is also super powerful in the lategame (PvE) its only prequisite are quite a bit of souls to upgrade the pyromancer flame(it's strength isn't tied to your attributes). I startet as a thief and can get some bosses with 3-5 shots down. So if you want to lower the challenge considerably in your first playthrough to be able to explore more or trying to get some achievement/trophies try to get your pyromancy up.
-
I actually saw my friend beat the NPC by the bonfire in lordran right after he got there. He died a lot, but after a while he killed them as a thief using 5 of the parry attacks in a row

Thanks to various easy-mode means cause I just got my Platinum trophy for Dark Souls. Now I can make that legit Knight for a more honest play through.

How the hell do you platinum this oh god what

^homahgod!!
So… giant rant ahead yah'll, grab a drink
My Day of Dark Souls yesterday goes as follows:
! After teaming up with some awesome people to: Balls through the undead parish, wreck the elite zombie fucks, kill the shit outta the belltower gargoyles and subsequently do the same to the fucking Capra demon (I love the summoning, it's become soo important now. If i'm alive and see a summon mark. It becomes a PRIORITY to get the fool in my game.)… I made my way through the depths (im a pyromancer btw. and yes, got me the damn Drake sword... everyone has the Nathan Drake sword. It may as well be called that.). I stayed human the entirety of the depths... well, mostly. got invaded twice.. (once by Kirk and another time by some high level arsehole. or at least one with better gear than me. Killed me. Got himself indicted. Fucker).
, and am hollow. So I decided to test out how awesome Iron Flesh is by taking on the headless lightning demon that's roomates with andre. So wow…. Iron Flesh is fucking BOSS!!!!! I killed the shit out of it!
! Sooo.... GIANT RAT! (humanity!! ) easy. Took down the fucking Gaping vagina dragon with two summoned peeps… hell these cool assholes even helped chop off it's tail.... for little ol' me! (daww). Got me a dragon greataxe i wont use this play through. Met the foreign merchant and got me a bottomless box.
! Alright, am I missing anything?
! Oh right...
! So before going down to Shittown (that's what I call Blighttown forever), I decided to scour the depths (I would call the depths shittown, seeing as it's a sewer... but I find it to be manageable, plus shit always goes down... and Blighttown is full of fucking shit.) So I have the damn guide... yes.. I know. But I only use it for really important stuff. Didn't know about the spider shield until I was watching a vid early yesterday and found I fucking missed it. So.. what I was getting at with the guide, is I know the whole damn deal with Basilisks and curses. IGN's reviewer warned the entire gaming world about it, so I decided research was important. I knew i'd run into a one or two Basilisk's in the depths...
! ..yep, one or two... hell, I killed ONE OR TWO in my first run through of the sewer.. and here I thought, "oh well things should be cool. I explored, hired some soul goons and took out the toothed gaping vaginal dragon i'm sure some gelbooru artist is combining with Miku to make into a wank abomonation... ahem... anyhoo.. so the sewers should be relatively enemy free."
! So I dropped down a water shoot I hadn't dropped down...... into a tiny square room with a cool ring in it. (evil eye). I grab that and HOLY SHIT!! About 5-6 Basilisk's begin bouncing/hopping/POURING INTO THE FUCKING SQUARE ROOM. I was equip-ing the ring and flew through the menu fast enough to make the most asian of gamer's eyebrow raise slightly (see post above), and began fighting for my life and my health-bar's safety.
! Fuck those things.
! They look so dumb and silly.... but now they haunted my dreams and wanted nothing more than to curse my poor, living self (also holding onto about 25K souls btw). By this point, the entire square room was filled with clouds of curse-dioxide... I couldn't see... I was just swinging wildly, my curse meter barely hanging on.
! And I emerged victorious. A pile of googlyeyed, bullshit, lizards lay at my feet.... havoc ragdolling as I left the square room of death and fear... almost like in death they still wanted to curse me. There was a straggler outside the death box... unfazed by it's family's demise. I wasn't fucking around. I blasted him with my last fireball, that i'd been saving for an emergency.
! Die.
! Sooooo, I try dipping my toes into blighttown. And get killed a bunch of times by the stupid infested barbarians outside the gates. Too many times. Not that they are difficult... but the precarious footing is what usually led to my demise. Sooo seeing as how I didn't wanna get too far in to endanger my bank of souls, I ventured to the surface and back to the firelink. I purchased some stuff from the pyromancer I saved (combustion, and Iron Flesh... AMAZING SPELL!) and also upgraded the hell outta my pyro glove. Then I decided to pay the blacksmith a visit to fix mah shit.
! Oh... i'm all geared. Have a bunch of saved
! Feeling brave, I ventured into darkroot garden and killed a bunch of tree things and unlocked some bonfires. I then made my way down to the basin and even tanked a black knight (iron flesh BOOYAH!!). Thennnn I passed up the hydra, but killed all his crystal golems like breakfast and gave Havel a try.
! Jesus that guy is nuts. Too many deaths. Bonfire walk was stupid. He'll die later.
! Time fo' Blighttown.
! So braving the footing, poison, toxin, barbarians, and in-game slowdown... I (in human form) made my way down to the bottom, mosquito, in one go.
! Oh wait, I'm supposed to be calling this area Shittown. mosquito. Cause that's what it (mosquito) is. SHITTOWN.
! mosquito, mosquito, mosquito, mosquito...
! FUCK THE MOSQUITOES... FUCK THEM. They keep coming, just a constant threat.... annoyance. And i've, mosquito, mastered the art of dealing with them CONSTANTLYOMYFUCKINGGODMOSQUITOFUCKTEKJSKJA! yeah, i can sit and wait about... oh I don't know... A MINUTE. Oh mosquito, target, block, hard slash, repeat... easy right?
! Oh, double Craigspider.. glee. Oh i'm fucking, mosquito, poisoned.. woohoo. Oh more mosquitoes. WEEEEE. (all the more stressful that i'm in human form and am currently balling with 15K souls). So I find the nearest bonfire... just in time to get gangbanged and killed by butt-eater mildred and 4 mosqitoes and a craigspider. Phew. So I lure her out, mosquito, on a date and make her pay for everything (double ). Mosquitoes (wow, my mac lets me spell this two ways!).
! Anyway (time to drive to IRL work, mosquito), so I'll wrap this up. I venture to waterwheel and go up, mosquito, and go across the stupid branch. Explore… then die. So I make my, mosquito, way back to get my body. Success (20K souls btw) annnnnnnd... i'm stuck.
! yeah..
! I can't get back across the branch. There's like some kind of glitch. I try creeping across. Nothing. I get stuck. If I push it, I fall. Gotta, mosquito, start over.
! I realize it's futile. It's some kind of glitch or something. I CAN'T FUCKING CROSS!!! I'M FUCKING STUCK. I then get killed on my final venture back to my body... 20k souls lost in fucking shittown. FUCCCCCCK, mosquito.
! This game is fucking rough... really rough. I LOVE it.
! It's like, Dark Souls is just one giant tutorial on HOW TO PLAY DARK SOULS! If you fuck up... well there's no question. . That's what it should say instead of You DIED.
! YOU FUCKED UP.
! Well cept' the tree branch thing. Which i'm sure in some way was my fault…. hell, in Dark Souls eye's it was.
! Like, this game was made to punish. The only people this game is easy for is Alfred (Batman doesn't play games, and Robin sucks), Kenshiro (if he was ACTUALLY in the game), and Koma... since he just platinumed the damn thing... to which i'm sure he was able to somehow use his Sektor as an in game character to crush it's spirit.
! Thanks for reading/skimming my rant. Here's your reward:

Wow. Fun read, Gekko.
Anyway, I played Demon's Souls about a year ago. My friends and I were doing a 72 hour video game marathon (streamed online for charity purposes) where we let reddit voters pick what games we played (terrible idea, I know. I didn't come up with it). The reddit voters, cruel, cruel people that they are, picked Demon's Souls as our first game. None of us had ever touched it before, but we ran out to gamestop and picked up a used copy. In short, the following ~35 hours were some of the most miserable of my life. We had no idea what we were doing and proceeded to flop through the game with a terrible build, awful equips, and no strategy. After 20 hours in all I wanted to do was sleep and/or get to my playthroughs of Mega Man 9/10 and RE4, but my asshole friends insisted that we had to stick to our word that we would play each game to completion. So we persevered, I singlehandedly beat Dirty Stankyville (or whatever the fuck level 5 is called) when my incompetent friends couldn't (it was the first time I picked up the controller), and we finally bitch-killed that unreasonably difficult False King with the stand-in-the-doorway-and-shoot-arrows-like-a-pussy trick.
Basically it was an awful experience, but I suspect that my hatred of the game arose more from the circumstances under which we were playing (blindly, with a time limit, and with more enticingly fun games to play, just out of reach) than the game itself, because I actually am a fan of so-called "difficult" games.
Now I can read all the game-site reviews of Dark Souls until the cows come home, but my questions to you fine people in this thread are the following:
How does Dark Souls really compare? More or less difficult/forgiving? Still really satisfying when you finally beat that boss with a strategy of your own construction? Enjoyable even without net play, since I'm living like a barbarian in a country where wireless is surprisingly difficult to obtain? Will playing this in Japan make it a better experience, given that something in the air here makes people treat games like this like the second coming of Enel? -

Enjoyable even without net play, since I'm living like a barbarian in a country where wireless is surprisingly difficult to obtain? Will playing this in Japan make it a better experience, given that something in the air here makes people treat games like this like the second coming of Enel?I'd say it's harder than demon souls because of it's structure. Playing it the first time not knowing where you have to go you get destroyed a lot by enemies inappropriate for your equipment. As for the net play your pretty much only missing out on helpful/trolling messages that people leave behind. You can get invaded by npc even if you play offline. So I don't think that playing offline makes you miss out on much except if you really like pvp and you want to have that as your endgame.
As for playing it in Japan no idea^^. Probably not? Since there is basically no real communication (except gesture emotes) between players. But if you know a lot of people playing this it's surely a bonus. I have a friend who began it at the same time as me and we always find different things (items, hidden paths or boss strategies). So for me the beauty of Dark Souls doesn't exactly lie in it's difficulty but rather in it's exploration.
The world is open and interconnected(although some shortcuts to different areas you have to unlock first)
and trying to explore it and finding useful items is super fun.
Then we have bosses and most of them aren't really that hard if you figure them out, it's a little bit like zelda although you die i little bit faster when you try to get to know their weakness/pattern. But yeah it's still pretty rewarding to kill a boss.As for character builds, it may be a little overwhelming not knowing what to skill and wondering if what you skill is effective.
But Dark Souls isn't actually that punishing if it comes to placing in the wrong stats since most of your damage should come from the weapon itself, whoch have stat scaling which isn't that significant right now(for most weapons).
So the general idea is to take your points mostly into endurance, then your main damage attribute(str, int or dex) an some ocassionally points into vitality and you're all set. -
And such .
-
Congratulations!
Now beat the game in 12 minutes.

I'm not sure whether or not I'm spoiling myself, but the stories in here are halairious. Good one Gekko. I almost can't wait to be done with Demon's Souls.

Congrats, Dark Souls Platinum is sure a ride.
Souvenir of Reprisals were such a pain to get.
But the ones I got from pvp were certainly most satisfying. And channelers trident too also ridiculously long to farm for me >.<.

I heard you were playing it! Good stuff.
Yeah, all of my story above happened in like one gaming session. Tough times… but memorable. A very rewarding game to progress through.
Dark and Demon's are great. I love these games for breaking the mold of soo many fantasy RPGs out there. Well maybe not so much breaking the mold, but putting it's own unique spin on things. I feel the minimalistic story works very well in Dark Soulz. There is quite a bit of story and worldly depth to be inferred from simply reading item descriptions and what little the NPCs say.
Oh and what's your PSN? I remember getting that a while ago but forgot to add you! Mine is my name here.

Honestly what I like about the game is that it brings back elements from old dungeon crawl games I used to play. It throws you into this world with numerous paths to choose from, and the regular enemies are divided from simple fodder(that can group up on you), to dangerous ones that either challenges you or forces you to pick a long path to avoid being completely murdered altogether. Oh… and traps. I bloody hate traps. It does not have to be one of those obvious ones either. Sometimes the environment is a trap itself(small gaps alongside cliffs, or deathfalls in the dark, swamp that slows you down and not these huge and bloodly fast/strong demons). Bosses are just icing on the cake.. well the ones I've faced so far seemed like prizes in comparison to the journey to actually reach or find them.
It's a well put together game, and I can tell alot of work was put into it. I've just added your PSN. Realized I accidently wrote the wrong numbers at the end, and the thing has been pending on whoeverthispersonis' account for godknowshowlong.
-
Oh I see. My mispelled name was pending for probably a long time! damn, I hope you didn't think I was ignoring yah!
And if you hate traps, boy oh boy wait till you get to Sen's Fortress in Dark Souls. ugh.
-
Nah, who ignores ole lovable me? I just thought you didn't play the PS3 much, which is a criminal thought now I think about it? Who puts down a console for almost 2 months I wonder?
And your warning just raises my exitement bar. I may hate traps, but I appriciate the developer's devotion to kill me.
-
So who is getting the dlc?
I'm really torn haven't played Dark souls for months would have to relearn all the timings/rythms (parry, backstab) before I can stop getting soul crushed again :). Also I've no idea how the recent patches tweaked the game a friends told me you can buy the master key now but besides that I'm clueless.

Oh yea I am pumped for this dlc, really don't mind the pricing at all. Only problem is that I still have to finish my play through, I started in December and had to put it down due to an overload of college work since my Demon's souls experience tells me that dedication, perseverance and patience is the key.

Speaking of story in dark souls, you should check these vids out
I knew that the developers liked to tell the lore through the architecture of the levels, enemy designs and item descriptions, but I definitely did not expect them to have the depth to receive analysis like this. -
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-08-09-dark-souls-pc-preview-the-devils-bargain
It seems that Dark Souls is going to be the first (and hopefully only) PC port to ever be identical to the console version. There's no way to raise the resolution and no way to play at more than 30 fps. It seems that the game runs better than the console version at least though. I watched my brother play on the 360 and it slowed down a lot just running around. It seems like it's going to be the worst PC port ever, though it being originally a console only game kind of lightens this a bit. The game doesn't interest me that much but I'm sure quite a few of the people who signed the petition to get it ported are going to be disappointed.

The first half of Sen's Fortress can go suck a dick. Although it is satisfying whenever you see one of those Snake soldiers get crushed by a rolling boulder.

Well that was quick. I didn't think it was possible at all, let alone in less than an hour after release. From should have done this themselves. -
Why do PC ethusiant care so much about this, I'll never know.
Awaiting the winter release for the DLC. -
The game has enough of a cult following that PC owners feel it should belong to them too. Either way… From Software is giving all DLC with the deal so i'm all for it. DLC means more shit and MORE LORE!!!
More lore about my boi Artorias!! And we get to see what the fourth female knight of Gwin looks like!
And it means more videos from the ALWAYS baller, always class, Epic Name Bro!
-
Why do PC ethusiant care so much about this, I'll never know.
Awaiting the winter release for the DLC.Because playing a game in 720p hasn't been acceptable on a PC since the late 90s. The blur caused by low resolution is much more noticeable when you sit as close to a monitor as people who play on PC do and quite a few people have monitors over 1080p so it makes it worse. Dark Souls just stretched to your screen which makes it blurry and hard to look at for extended periods of time. The upscalers on graphics cards aren't as good as on TVs and the console too I think which makes it even blurrier than when it's being played on the 360 or PS3.
-
The community is strong with Souls. Cool to see a fix for the issue so fast… I figured there'd be some hiccups off the bat for the PC version.
-
It's actually much better than people were expecting. Apparently the poor performance in Blighttown and other places is completely fixed. There's still not very good kb+m support and GFWL is kind of annoying but yeah.
-
Fixed blight-town huh? Definite like on that shit right there!
-
I never felt like the game looked too blurry or anything. It's not like I play games to sit around and admire the scenery or anything, so it's a minor issue for me when it comes to technical problems. It's just those awful design choices in Blightown. The thing I felt really screwed the frame rate there were the infinite respawn points points of those tiny insect enemies(combined with that lighting). It was so bad, even their hit-boxes became wonky. Speaking of hit-boxes, I think this is one of the things I really hated about the game. Sometimes the hit detection felt off and there are times where hits would connect when it visually should not, or the exact opposite. The "bump radius" also felt a bit large for some enemies too… like.. how does a skeleton block a whole hallway when you visually see spaces to run around?
Another issue I have was really just the damage balancing. There a point in the game where almost everything after Undead Burg would straight up do a shitload of punishing damage(even more than certian bosses). I know this is an open-ended hack-and-slash with multiple kinds of attacks and resistances to these kinds of attacks, but you never really feel like the precautions matter as much. It really all came down to Light armor vs Heavy armor and which had more or less resistances to elements and stat alinements. Nothing huge though. Just a minor design issue.
-
So going for efficiency, I started a new character… focusing on a dex build this time.
My ultimate build will be
-weapons
Balder Side Sword +15 (main! Baller swag sword. Always swag, always class)
Ricard's Rapier
Black bow of Pharis
Un-upgraded pyro glove
-off hand
eagle shield (main. Still learning to parry. Not confident enough yet)
catalyst
-armor
elite knight
(could change this if I wanna be creative... just being efficient atm. Can't get too heavy... i'm dex and I need that mobility)
-rings i'll use
lingering dragoncrest ring
Ring of favor and protection
Dark Wood Grain Ring
-magics
crystal magic weapon
power within
homing crystal soul mass (or an area specific spell like cast light)So ultimately this will be a dex based, buff build. For killing them bosses, I turn on power within and then enchant my weapon. The lingering dragoncrest ring helps to increase the duration and the pyro glove stays base level in conjunction with power within. The pyro spell will increase my damage but also eat at my health... but I read that the lower the glove, the less damage! And there you have it.
I started cleric so I could have 14 faith off the bat, since I was gonna pick up Astora's sword from the valley of the drakes after I get to firelink. I figured I hated relying on the drake sword soo much and this could help me through the catacombs early since it's divine. Hmmm... in hindsight i'm not sure this was the most efficient choice after all since i'm focusing on dex/end/int... but I guess it just means more soul allocation.
For leveling I raised my str to 16 and my att to 14. Then I evenly spread vit/dex/end/int to 20. After that I focus on dex/end/int.. to about 40 each if I ACTUALLY decide to get that high of level... and then just sink into VIT.
And am very much enjoying myself at the moment. I'm back to lvl 60 and currently ready to kick the 4 kings arse. I got lucky this time around and had a good crew summoned and literally took on Anor londo in one go. Very pleased about that. I also feel i'm using my humanity more tactical this time. I've been invaded a SHIT ton of times. Joined the forest hunters to get shiva to appear. Kicked his ninja off a cliff to get his ninja flip ring. Clan got pissed... so I farmed them for an hour or two. Then I visited Oswald and had my slate wiped clean and rejoined them so I could have shiva appear in blighttown to sell me shit.
My progress has been:
-New londo (suicide run for the firekeeper soul)
-Valley of drakes (suicide run for sword of astora)
-Upper undead burg
-parish
-lower undead burg
-darkroot garden entrance
-darkroot basin watchtower
-darkroot basin
-darkroot garden proper (fuckin giant cats)
-depths
-catacombs (rite of kindling. Sword of Astora comes in handy)
-blighttown
-Sen's forthress
-Anor londo
-errands
-new londo (current)Oh! I wanna write more, but I gotta work. PEACE (get on this shit Hiroy!!!)
-
I would honeslty jump on this if my last clear of the game wasn't done on my second character(which was kinda standard and a bit boring relying on the Drake Sword and Lightning Zwi). I could only imagine what playing like my first one would be like. It was an INT build that was mostly a glass cannon. Shitload of damage, but little to no resistances due to low heath and endurance. Which could have played finely if the pace of my multilayer campaign went smoothly(not that I'd play it now, since there's a chance we could play agian).
I think I'd want to give the Int build thing again a second try. This time, not spending Souls on the Int stat till it's 45 off the bat. It was fun killing everything in a couple of hits, but it sucked not having access to the good spells until Post-Anor Londo(really, Soul Arrow is boring, and grinding for A-Scale enchanted weapons wasn't fun at all).
Question though. I'm assuming the corpse for Shiva body guard respawns if you knock him off a cliff?
-
Even though it's so late in the game, the Moonlight Greatsword you get for lopping off Seath's tail is awesome I hear.
Oh and yeah… to answer your question... just kick the ninja off the cliff and wait for it to save, then just quit out of the game (via ps3 menu) and then load yerself back up. You'll be back in that spot and his shit will be by the cliffside. It was a hassle to do this early (since I had to absolve my sins and rejoin the covenant to get Shiva as a merchant in B-town)... buuuuuut, this is the best way to take on the ninja. Down in the swamp, you gotta fight em both in pretty shitty conditions and unless you're rocking a chaos great fireball, you'll feel both their wrath in moments.
The idea of a pure INT build sounds intriguing, but yeah... the best goodies are later in the game.
And I agree about the drakesword... it's useful for SURE... but I just think it's boring and takes away from my character's individuality (it's like they put it there if your having a tough time or something). It sucks knowing that it's the best weapon option that early in the game and AT LEAST until you crawl into blighttown. I was happy as clam when my balder side sword dropped randomly from an elite undead!
Oh and for the fuck of it... I got Eingyi to hook me up with another pyro glove (had to stash my other one and get a parasite... yay) and I farmed that shit to THE MAX. I dunno... just in case I suppose... 340500 souls to feed that hungry bitch. Which takes maybe about 2 hours of solid forest grind.
-
My soul is itching to test myself against the new content and at the same time I've become to much of a wimp.
Just started the game on my ps3 a few weeks ago and I got domintated by the gargoyles.
I'm not sure if I have the fortitude to relearn this game again just to get to the new content… -

I've avtually used it without the INT requirements on my last save. It's really good, but you don't get the benefits of a ranged magic attack :( It would have been awesome on my first…. if only it wasn't for the heath issue. Seath is more dangerous from the back than the front.

Too bad alot of the stuff Shiva sells are either enemy or body-break part drops, but the Washing Pole is a great DEX weapon from what I've heard. He also sells claws and a ring… which are both unique, though not all that useful to me. I usually just buy the stuff, hit him and watch him poison himself to death in the Swamp. His sword was really helpful for me, especially Enchanted.
And I agree about the drakesword… it's useful for SURE... but I just think it's boring and takes away from my character's individuality (it's like they put it there if your having a tough time or something). It sucks knowing that it's the best weapon option that early in the game and AT LEAST until you crawl into blighttown. I was happy as clam when my balder side sword dropped randomly from an elite undead!
Balder Swag Sword was my main secondary weapon even though I really desperately wished its moveset had more stabbing attacks. Speaking of Balders, I love their armor, but alas. I also wished the model kept that awesome cape in the orignal condition as the enemy models. There really comes a point in the game where you can just wear whatever armor you think looked cool(unless you desperately need poise.. like… I needed to equip a full Havel set to torch the crap out of the Four Kings with Combustions).
Oh and for the fuck of it… I got Eingyi to hook me up with another pyro glove (had to stash my other one and get a parasite... yay) and I farmed that shit to THE MAX. I dunno... just in case I suppose... 340500 souls to feed that hungry bitch. Which takes maybe about 2 hours of solid forest grind.
At a certian point, I really just recommend playing through the game normally if your levels are satisfying enough. That's ALOT of soul to grind. In almost the same of time, you can kill bosses and get soul needed to pump the glove. Grind surely has payoff. But progress just pays so much more. I sort of learned this after spending hours farming for the upgrades of the glove the first time.

It really doesn't take as long as you may think. Just pop on some music and you're good to go. I only grind for the pyro glove this time around because I didn't really wanna waste my earned progress souls on something I'm not sure I really need to use this time around. I suppose I just like having it… and it saves me the time of upgrading it for new game+
The swag sword truly shines when used two handed. The vertical light attack works well for most situations... just gotta be flipping like a ninja of course. And agreed that I wish I could be a baller with a balder red cape...
Oh and I just beat 4 kings and um yeah... can't middle ground that fight. You either need to dodge like a fool or have the poise to back it up... otherwise you're nuked.
Oh and since this thread is kindled at the moment... the new DLC rocks, looks awesome, and I cannot wait till october to get my hands on the Lord Blade's short swords!!!

So yeah I just got this game, chose the knight class. I literally died on the first "undead guard boss" because I was rushing and didn't read about the plunge attack. I laughed so hard when he jumped UP TO THE BALCONY AND SMASHED ME TO THE GROUND.
I got out and made it the firetorch island, and was preceding every inch of the place with caution like a coward. I was afraid to step into the water of that area with just the goddess statue because it looked so peaceful.
I started climbing the tower and doing pretty good in battle for the most part, then I saw a dark knight in this narrow corridor… Oh my god. Needless to say, I'm not human anymore.
Also funny that the only "Black guy" skin is a happy drunkard... what? :wassat:

I just got it too. Went pyromancer (I know, doesn't matter in the end, really) and just beat the Gaping Dragon. About to head to Blighttown.
Absolutely love the rush that comes with approaching some horrible beast way before you're "supposed" to and taking it down with a cool strategy… after dying ten times to figure it out. And just exploring. The temptation to look at guides is strong, but it's so much more satisfying to just plunge into a new area, fight some shit you've never seen before, get a treasure or two, and then get destroyed by something around the next corner. I definitely see myself investing 100+ hours into this...I got out and made it the firetorch island, and was preceding every inch of the place with caution like a coward. I was afraid to step into the water of that area with just the goddess statue because it looked so peaceful.
Joy of exploring aside, that sort of instinct will serve you well in this game ;D

Absolutely love this game. I've invested a solid 170 hours into it and still haven't beaten it (Yeah…sad I know) I'm currently am stuck on the Four Kings, can't find the right balance of power and poise...
Onto the point of my post, I'm always up for some jolly cooperation. I play on the PS3 and most of my characters range from level 20-40, with the exception of my main which is level 90 I think. If you'd like a hand with a boss, I'm willing to help =D Just let me know.

So yeah, I decided to go with a "Boxer " build (Casteus Fist weapon), best decision I've ever made in my life. Apparently Left hand attack is jab, and it's very fast and takes hardly any stamina.
If any enemy draws back to swing they get interrupted by a quick jab to the face.
I'm so fast that I can run circles around them and back punch. (They only weigh 0.5! and after reinforcing them they do pretty decent damage)
I need to work on parrying though, since I'm not using a shield. I've been doing pretty good, but I've slipped up a lot on spear wielders, just can't get the timing down for those.

I think a pugilist build sounds fucking wicked fun in Dark Souls and I've been meaning to try it.

You have no idea. I think I may have to go with the occult type fist, it scales to my faith, strength and dexterity.

Pug build does seem fun.
Make akahiko sempai!!!

So this game is worth picking up? Finally have a bit of spare cash, and I've checked this thread every now and then and everyone seems to just have good stuff to say about it. Whether it's kind of brutal, but in a good way, or just crazy in how much you can do with your character build-wise.
It's probably this or Skyrim(which I've already played), and… yeah. Figure it'd make more sense to pick up a different game if it's good.

Definitely worth it. Not too hard, just tons of farming. I got more playtime out of Skyrim (105 hours in skyrim, 55 in darksouls), but I might have enjoyed darksouls a little better (mostly because I was reading Berserk at the time I was playing it :D). Its a pretty even match for me, if you want a challenge, definitely get Darksouls.
I finished my first playthrough in about 55 hours, all of which I enjoyed immensely.
(In my opinion) Pyromancer is best starting class, and get the master key.
Primarily used sorcery spells (homing crystal soulmass beat pretty much every boss after Ornstein and Smough super easily.)
Used a lightning spear (I know, a lame way out.)I had the most trouble with Ornstein and Smough, took me about 40-50 tries to beat them.

Get Dark Souls.
Try getting it used. At gamestop they give you 7 days to try it and if you don't like it you can return it, no questions asked.
Now, you'll know if you like Dark Souls in the first two hours…. either you'll like it... or you'll hate it.
Dark Souls isn't as hard as people make it out to be... it just expects a lot out of you.
-patience
-learning
-patience
-convictionYou learn from your deaths... it's one of the primary mechanics of the game. I'd say the more annoying part of the game is having to replay certain sections until you get the area down to a science and advance. Be careful... be cautious.... fight only one enemy at a time... use your tools you find. Read every item description... the lore and backstory you piece together by exploring and reading is quite deep and awesome.
As far as character customization, you are limited at first... very... and actually for quite a while. But once you know where everything is and know what sort of character you wanna rock... the choices are pretty sizable.
Skyrim is just skyrim. A giant, timesink. And if you have a ps3... then don't even bother. It's awful.
