This is the worst attempt at a backlash I ever seen on this entire forum, and I don't even watch or support the anime anymore.
What are you talking about? =/

Wow, looks like Funimation is taking lessons from Sony.
@Zach:
The trackers are mentioned, and only the hash tag is mentioned.
For those making the argument that FUNimation is acting like big brother, you're being beyond ridiculous. This is a completely fair lawsuit over a property which they own. For all those -in the United States- who believe they have a right to the property, or who believe that FUNimation doesn't have a right to sue, you have a lot to learn about legality and the way the world works. Seriously, what the hell?
Well in general, anyone can sue anyone.
The law it quite unclear as to whats legal and whats not but that I know of.
If this person wanted to, they could counter sue Funimation. Granted it would be a dropped case in a heart-beat but he could do it if he so pleased.
As for those in other countries, I'm sorry that you have to suffer. It will be near impossible to have everything perfect.
The best course of action would be to upload the episodes to youtube. Youtube is viewable to everyone. I know that Hulu is more corporate based. While youtube is more community based. And as far as I can tell, Hulu is more profitable.
But considering you would have ALL of the US, UK and Australia watching, that might be equal to the profit they make from posting it on Hulu. Though, I'm no financial expert, so I wouldn't really know. But it seems like a solution.
What are you talking about? =/
Having a good excuse to download or stream illegally…. which is, not living in America. Otherwise, there is no excuse.
That idea.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Do you perhaps have a rebuttal to that idea?
@Zach:

No. You CAN file for a lawsuit. Can you not?
@Zach:

That's like so 3 pages ago.
That's like so 3 pages ago.
What? Im not mistaken in thinking you CAN at least file for a lawsuit right?
…right? cowers in the corner
No. You CAN file for a lawsuit. Can you not?
No, they really can't. They have no cause of action against FUNimation to form any sort of countersuit. FUNimation is suing for breach of a U.S. federal law, which all 1,337 of these people breached.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
While Funimation do have the right to sue on behalf of their copyrights, it is extremely foolish for them to do so.
Even if they win this lawsuit (unlikely), the amount of financial recompense will be minimal at best.
They won't ever put a dent in fansub distribution as the internet is far too vast.
Finally it will only serve to muddy their reputation with the fanbase.
They won't win any battles by throwing their weight around and bullying fansub groups.
No matter how entitled they may be to do so.
Do you perhaps have a rebuttal to that idea?
Yeah I have one. Regardless of where you live, if you get caught, you get caught. No excuses.

It ALSO shows Toei they're serious about defending One Piece.
A Move that might be good for them considering there may still be some sore spots in there after the whole simulcast leak debacle.
Which is stupid.
"Oh, they're actually defending their own intellectual property? THE FIENDS!"
Seriously, if someone owned a store and KNEW the neighborhood kids came in every day and stole candy bars from the candy section, would he be in the wrong for trying to stop them?! Even if EVERY kid in the neighborhood does it, and there is no logical way to stop them all, is it really so wrong for him to TRY?!
I KNOW you guys hate FUNimation and seeing the occasional small little typo makes your blood boil more than mine does when I see "Nakama" in an English fansub, but you guys have to realize something.
Fansubs ARE Illegal.
This. Is. a. Fact.As much as you don't like it, you have to acknowledge this.
Blaming FUNi for going after fansubbers is stupid. Especially because they aren't the only ones at play here. FUNi may be the ones filing the lawsuit, but Toei ALSO don't like piracy, as evidenced by that whole debacle with the Simulcast leak back when that happened.
You can bet your ass that even if Toei don't directly have their hands in the cookie jar this time, they at least greatly encourage and WANT FUNi to do things like this.Money goes into producing One Piece. Every time you buy One Piece, money goes back to the people involved.
FUNi PAYS Toei a sum to put the show up. Every time I buy a DVD or watch the Simulcast on their site, they get money. If FUNi makes money, they pay Toei a HEFTY Sum to renew the license, and then they get money.Everyone wants to keep making money for all the hard work they're doing.
Stop acting like this stuff is supposed to be free, you are not entitled to anime any more than I am entitled to walk into wherever the hell you work and demand you do your job for me for free.
Should've said this in my post, but I do support FUNi, and do think they are in the right to do this, just that it looks rather random and will only make enemies, even if these enemies are lowlife leechers.
I'm not even American, but I buy their DVDs and use a proxy to watch their video player every week.
People like Frog are dumb though and almost warrant an insult like "Funi white knight". Almost.
@Zach:
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
But lets be honest here. When do I?
And my ignorance I suppose is a scary thing.
I have a lot to learn. :sad:
Though I'm wiling to learn.
I'm arrogant, but not stubborn.
Not like it matters though. What matters is the audience outside of the US.
Could funimation perhaps sue someone in the UK?
I have a question Zach, you mentioned "IP addresses and dates noted." I am curious as to how long they watched the torrent to make the list of the pirates.

Maybe you didn't read my previous post, but the suit is for an injunction and not financial compensation, though there is an additional judgment asked for that. It's extremely foolish that you'd assume this will end with no liability for the defendants, especially considering how precedent for this leans strongly with the parent companies. Of course it won't put much of a dent in fansub distribution, but it's the right thing to do, and regardless of what you think, they have the right and perhaps duty to do it.

From a cursory glance, they include downloads from January 9th through 12th. There ARE over 1,000, so there may be some from later. They ALL revolve around Episode 481.
Having a good excuse to download or stream illegally…. which is, not living in America. Otherwise, there is no excuse.
That idea.
I'm not, in anyway, implying that it is legal for somebody in a country outside of the USA to download the anime episodes.
Besides I posted that after seeing a bunch of people from other countries saying "We don't even have access to the Simulcast!". Excuse me for not wanting to start a massive argument with them.
(Although, this case is only targeting people in America so I don't know why those people are complaining anyway)
It's just that, regardless of the legality, due to having the legal alternative, it is more ridiculous for the Americans to be downloading the anime episodes. Maybe you think it's not only completely illegal, but also completely immoral to download the anime episodes in another country. All I'm saying is that it is more ridiculous for people who have this legal alternative.
If people in other countries get in trouble that's that, and there really aren't any good arguments for them, I won't deny that.
@Zach:

Excuse my ignorance Zach, but what is the difference between an injunction and financial compensation?
@Robo:
Excuse my ignorance Zach, but what is the difference between an injunction and financial compensation?
It's fine: an injunction is a suit intended to stop or intervene in something. So let's say you keep punching me in the arm, I'd file an injunction to get you to stop. That's different then me asking you to pay me damages for my broken arm.
Thanks, to be honest, I think these people are lucky that this all Funi is going to do.
@Zach:
regardless of what you think, they have the right and perhaps duty to do it.
I don't know about duty, but I said in my post that Funi are well within their rights.
But the way I see it is this;
People want stuff for free.
But people are also lazy.
Therefore to compete against the pirates you have to provide a better service than they do.
The music industry learned this and the American comic book industry is learning this…..slowly.
In Funi's case they want everyone to watch their stream, so they get the advertisement money. But the stream is only available to a select group, the USA.
If it was accessible by everyone and advertised well, I don't see why it wouldn't be successful.
Providing the streaming quality is good and the player is convenient to use of course.
(before anyone jumps on me I know why worldwide streaming wont happen, I'm just saying my thoughts)

Thanks, I am actually surprised that there were that many Americans downloading the episode in just 3 days. Oh well ultimately they get what they deserve. It won't change people downloading fansubs but at least funimation has come out and made it crystal clear that they are against people fansubing their properties. This should cut down on the number of posts I see of idiots defending downloading localized fansubs by saying that the industry actually secretly supports it because it creates buzz.
Oh and one last question for Zach, will you be bringing up the lawsuit in your next podcast?

Flawlessly watching a downloaded movie file without the need of an internet connection or on a device that does not need a connection(for free no less) doesn't make the idea completely ridiculous. As illegal as it is, there's more convenient options any pirate would want.
It's threads like these that remind me that most otaku are completely out of touch with the outside world, and lack the capacity for reasonably assessing matters such as the business world.
to those with an undue sense of entitlement in regards to getting illegal fansubs (stateside or abroad), kindly step away from the computer and go take a long walk off a short pier.

I'll do you one better, we'll do a special episode about it tonight.

Speaking of people out of touch with the world, I don't think suicide is a fair punishment for downloading anime.

SWEET!!! I'll be listening.
as long as they arent on message boards whining about something they have no real right , then they can do whatever they want in any body of water they choose.

Actually, it seems like pretty much everyone here's being pretty reasonable. Now if I were to go and search for other threads on other sites, I'm sure i'd find users going out and calling Funimation the "Devil of the internet" or something.
Indeed, there are only 1 or 2 posts in here of that type tops.
@HiroVoid:

We are being quite reasonable.
Don't believe me? We could have posts like this one, but we dont.:
WTF .
THIS IS FUCKING WAR !!! Don't they have better stuff to do than prosecute torrent downloaders ?
@Zach:
I'll do you one better, we'll do a special episode about it tonight.
Awesome! I was thinking about how you guys would have a lot to say about this but how kind of delayed talking about that on next Monday's news segment would be.
@HiroVoid:

And indeed there is a ton of that.
What's gone on here is nothing.

Yeah, I know, I just wanted to post that quote I found.

Just found it! I had the thread in a tab for a while, but I hadn't bothered to actually look at it yet.
2011 posters…..
Oh WOW, just noticed this…
That explains a lot.
Anyway... I was really confused when I saw OPP tweet this. I just couldn't find the "1337" as a mere coincidence.
Speaking of people out of touch with the world, I don't think suicide is a fair punishment for downloading anime.
What? People are now too stupid to swim?
Just the act of jumping in the pier won't kill ya you know!
SERIOUSLY nobody get pissed, this post is a joke.

ahaha, read the thread you self righteous jackass.
Lol, here is another piece of gold from that thread Badass SnoCone quoted from:
THEY WILL NEVER TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM!!! Just because funimation suck balls and want a monopoly over all anime's doesn't mean we will let them have it. SUE THEM BACK FOR BEING UPTIGHT DOUCHE BAGS AND DESTROYING THE MEANING OF 'FUN'.
Yeah these are the poor victims old Funi is picking on. Doesn't it make you want to cry a river. sarcasm
If anyone has any questions concerning the law suit, The Dude, J-Sack, Firecrouch, Ed and myself will be doing a special podcast on it tonight. Let us know!
Two quick questions for the podcast, but when is the lawsuit supposed to take place or when do you think it might take place.
Do you guys think that this is just the beginning of funi lawsuits? Will they keep this up with other series?
@JERK:
ahaha, read the thread you self righteous jackass.
i have to admit, i lol'd pretty hard at this.
What? People are now too stupid to swim?
Just the act of jumping in the pier won't kill ya you know!
I know right? It's walking 500 miles toward the pier that would kill you.
