What do you think of the way women are portrayed in OP?
-
-
I think this argument is senseless in many ways.
Nothing we can do about it. But I do have one thing
to add. If I remember correctly, Oda is a "MAN."Geez my sarcasm is going to kill me.
-
If I ever felt like looking at boobs or butts I would just look at porn.
Anime and manga fandom would be so much better if fans adopted this attitude.
-
if you wanna look at boobs or butts all you need to do is leave your house they tend to be everywhere
-

But you get slapped for looking at those.

But you get slapped for looking at those.
Unless you're good looking, then you get giggled at.
-
You need to subtle when looking at that sort of stuff in public.
A buddy acting as a distraction has always worked for me. :ninja:
-
Shame most of the Japanese audience who read One Piece are most likely. "Tits or GTFO."
-

Are you calling that guy ugly?
Shame most of the Japanese audience who read One Piece are most likely. "Tits or GTFO."
Japanese don't know about porn?
P.S. just so we are all aware this is probably not the topic of the thread.
-
Japanese don't know about porn?
P.S. just so we are all aware this is probably not the topic of the thread.
It might be vaguely related to the topic. The way the Japanese view women and how sexually repressed a society the Japanese are versus how Oda portrays women that is.
-
sexually repressed? I thought I just read an article about how they're just too tired to have sex anymore
or some other dumb excuse
-
But you get slapped for looking at those.
A. Not if you're wearing sunglasses.
B. That doesn't tend to happen very much in the real world, only in the world of Japanese fiction. You should get out more. The worst thing a girl's gonna do to you is think you're some kind of creep, maybe share a laugh with her friends at your expense.
-
@dirt:
sexually repressed? I thought I just read an article about how they're just too tired to have sex anymore

Well when one of the most common causes of death is from overwork, it's not a surprise when they get home the last thing they want to do is go at it.
That, and I think Japan is realizing they have enough people on their archepalego.
But I've thought I've heard that the average Japanese was sexually repressed compared to other countries. I could be entirely wrong though.
-
@Sea:
You means?
I think this is a classic example of what people are talking about…. so classic I'm going to have to save it in my gif file so I can bring it up if the argument comes up again :ninja:
-
Although I am not crazy for the sex of the characters being changed around, I like that Luffy.
The hat makes is SUPER!!!Anyways, it would make sense they don't have a lot of action in the bedroom.
But isn't Japan reported to be heavy porno and sexuality? -
I think this is a classic example of what people are talking about…. so classic I'm going to have to save it in my gif file so I can bring it up if the argument comes up again :ninja:
I saw what you did there.
-
of course there's fan service Oda only went home one time last year can you imagine what that does to his sex life he has to do something with all that sexual frustration
but seriously compared to other shonen manga Oda represents women well you could go to any bar and find girls dressed more scantily than the women in one piece (okay mabey not Sadie chan) and besides it's a boys manga and trust me teen boys love boobs and honestly if the level of fanservice bothers you ,you got to get out there more -
if you wanna look at boobs or butts all you need to do is leave your house they tend to be everywhere
Specially in malls and the movies. Hell yeah.
But you get slapped for looking at those.
Nah. I once looked at some girl's cleavage in my classroom and a girlfriend of her noticed. All I got was just a creepy look.

I don't remember where, but I once read that japanese women are getting more and more tired of men being so cold and sexually repressed, something that (I'm not sure of) apparently made the birth rate to lower in these last decade.
-
Well, this topic sure brings out sexists and racists, doesn't it? My ignore list just grew by 5 only due to this topic.
Women in OP are obviously stronger than any other women in the RL… They don't bother wearing fitted clothing, they don't bother their boob groth, they don't bother seducing men, they don't bother being smart, they don't bother to cry and beg for help, and they don't bother to be brutal at times... So? Oda doesn't show plain nudity, no pantyshots, and chooses an angle of vision that women look spectacular without revealing too much.
And by linking this to a great story he just sold 32 million volumes in 2010, and doubled the amount from 2009...
Because the story is good, or is that not a possibility? It doesn't need tits and ass to make it any better, if it does for you, let me introduce you to porn, it is much better then still images of semi exposed breasts.
My point was: If you got a problem with boobs then especially shounen manga are most likely not the best reading for you. I got no problem with "still images of semi exposed breasts" because I am probably able to distinguish by the story progress whether to get aroused by them…
If you don't like boobs it's obviously only your problem when the author decides to bring them up in the story... But if you want to continue reading, bare it and quit being a fag that needs to complain about something non-existent.
BTW... If boobs don't make a story better then why do you think of boobs to worsen the story in general? Why bother anyways, if the story is good? You've got some kind of boob allergy? Or are you simply a little discriminatory towards other cultures and how THEY tell stories? And you're happy if US manga versions are censored by reducing chest sizes and repainting swimsuits to be less revealing?
TBH I think the visual designs from Kishi are generally better with women. The writing of course… not so much.
To be blunt: No, they aren't. Kishimoto fails in all aspects of character design… His characters all look plain, and most of their eyes look lifeless, even when they're emotional...
-

Wouldn't surprise me. Women are treated like shit in Japan. So they gotta "win" somehow.
-
My point was: If you got a problem with boobs then especially shounen manga are most likely not the best reading for you.
BULLSHIT! I love my career but I HATE mathematics, does that mean the career is not for me? Of course not, and if you think otherwise that's complete bullshit, since maths is only a fraction of what my career is about. The same happens with this, if some ppl hate the excesive proportions that women are given in OP it is nothing but a tiny fraction of what OP is about, so tiny in fact that if a fan decides not to watch OP just because of that he/she's either stupid or is just a religious fanatic that is better if closed in some christian congregation. Also, there are other anime (again, High school of the dead which is the most recent I've seen) where the sexism is so excesive that it becomes just plain ridiculous and it's ok to stay away from those given the degrading way that women are portrayed.
-
I wasn't going to continue this discussion, as I previously stated, then this piece of shit had to bother posting, so here we go:
! @LuffyLuffyNoMi:
! > […]Women in OP are obviously stronger than any other women in the RL… They don't bother wearing fitted clothing, they don't bother their boob groth, they don't bother seducing men, they don't bother being smart, they don't bother to cry and beg for help, and they don't bother to be brutal at times… So? Oda doesn't show plain nudity, no pantyshots, and chooses an angle of vision that women look spectacular without revealing too much.
! You either don't know what the word 'bother' means or you don't know how to write to get your meaning across. Either way what the fuck are you talking about women don't bother to cry and beg for help? Nami and Robin both cried and asked for help. These are two of the main female figures we have in the story. Go back and read the fucking story before you start spewing sewer waste about what women in this manga don't do.
! @LuffyLuffyNoMi:
! > […]My point was: If you got a problem with boobs then especially shounen manga are most likely not the best reading for you. I got no problem with "still images of semi exposed breasts" because I am probably able to distinguish by the story progress whether to get aroused by them…
! I am not going to be an Oda worshipping shit for brains that won't voice anything I don't like about the manga. If you go back and read the post, last page or page before that, I clearly stated I personally don't like it now go put your head in a fucking hole for telling other people what they can and can't read.
! Also, tell me how do enlarged breasts and skimpy clothing help a story progress, let me know I'm curious about this as I really can't think of any.
! @LuffyLuffyNoMi:
! > If you don't like boobs it's obviously only your problem when the author decides to bring them up in the story… But if you want to continue reading, bare it and quit being a fag that needs to complain about something non-existent.
! It is not non-existent, I don't want 5-6 panels in the manga chapters being about how sanji is having nose bleeds because nami can't be bothered to cover-up. This same time drawing those panels could be much better allocated towards a better part of the story.
! Why should I fucking bare it, I don't like it in the fucking story and that is all I said.
! @LuffyLuffyNoMi:
! > BTW… If boobs don't make a story better then why do you think of boobs to worsen the story in general?[1] Why bother anyways, if the story is good? You've got some kind of boob allergy?[2] Or are you simply a little discriminatory towards other cultures and how THEY tell stories?[3] And you're happy if US manga versions are censored by reducing chest sizes and repainting swimsuits to be less revealing?[4]
! 1. I answered that already
2. No, because if I need to see boobs I can go watch porn instead of having some tease in a manga. Thanks.
3. If it is discriminatory that I think boobs are not needed to make a story any better, sure I'm discriminatory.
4. I don't think the author would be very happy with other people editing his work without his permission, so it is up to the author. I personally haven't read a lot of mangas so I have not seen any censored versions of anything, nor am I interested.
! I'll let you get back to beating your meat while reading comic books. Fucking dumbass. -
On the topic of the girl's clothing (the skirts especially), Oda has a tendency to stretch women's proportions to the point that the short clothing might look revealing. Longer legs, smaller head compared to the torso, longer abdomen and longer arm limbs are the most commonly found among the slender types in the manga (not counting the uh… various breast sizes). The clothes look a tad less revealing when the proportions are shrunk to normal.
The first image is an official scan of the manga. The second one is a Photoshop edit that fits closer to the 'realistic' proportions of an adult woman. Note that I haven't changed the boob size, but there's a noticeable difference in sex appeal, I would think. The second one looks more restrained and less 'out there' compared to the first version, but it definitely lacks Oda's graceful style that the normal proportions could never attain.
!
I also agree with Just Gabe. High School of the Dead was just… sigh. And there was that episode which people started mistaking the series for a porno. I sometimes wished that the zombies would kill the girls to save us the agony, I had high hopes for that serie.
-
I long for Oda's old art style but I still like it. It's just when I see the below that I'm like, "WTF, Oda?"
[hide][/hide][hide][/hide]
-
BULLSHIT! I love my career but I HATE mathematics, does that mean the career is not for me? Of course not, and if you think otherwise that's complete bullshit, since maths is only a fraction of what my career is about.
You know. Most of analogies are totally crap - like this one since you even didn't bother about information about your so called … "career". Of course you can still find someone else to do the math parts of your job, but you cannot find someone to do the same story you're reading but without the erotic fan service. You have to decide what to consume.
It's a fact that most popular Shounen Manga serieses contain etchi either as gags or as part of their concept. Even if OP uses much less nudity, pantyshots and whatever erotic elements Oda does still play with his characters and works on them until he's got the right mixture fitting to its personality: Just look at the early concept art of Hancock which was MUCH less sexy…
True. And I say, if people start to complain about boobs in manga they should stop to waste their time. It's not like they were forced to read this.
But, what does religion have to do with this?
Also, there are other anime (again, High school of the dead which is the most recent I've seen) where the sexism is so excesive that it becomes just plain ridiculous and it's ok to stay away from those given the degrading way that women are portrayed.
Seriously, if people aren't able to get information about manga series that are CLEARLY classified as Etchi series before actually start to read it, they really shouldn't complain about seeing etchi stuff. It's as childish as crying about putting your hand on a heated stove right after your mommy cooked on it - and that is something called truth which is in fact hard to accept when you're criticized.
BTW, I don't care about stories like HSotD that I don't read.
And since murderedboy is outragous and begins to insult, I seem to have hit his vulnerable spot. Seriously… I feel sorry for you ... Grow up and get a life.
-
-
Holy crap, you're an idiot.
Way to miss completely the point of his post and continue to insult people.
-
True. And I say, if people start to complain about boobs in manga they should stop to waste their time. It's not like they were forced to read this.
But isn't that a significant part of what this thread is about?
Also why not complain? I like pineapples and sometimes when I get one it turns out to have some bad spots, I'll still eat it but I will also complain even if just to myself.
-
@Sea:
This was where my post came from:
http://apforums.net/showpost.php?p=1928381&postcount=409
That stupid post intrigued me.And I thought he was a forum-drama-fapping moron before.

@ADT:
Way to miss completely the point of his post and continue to insult people.
I understand the point of his post clearly, he repeatedly says, if you don't like boobs in your comic book <– and only this aspect, you should find something else to spend your time on, instead of critiquing this aspect of the story.
Which is a load of bullshit.
-
I don't remember where, but I once read that japanese women are getting more and more tired of men being so cold and sexually repressed, something that (I'm not sure of) apparently made the birth rate to lower in these last decade.
Wouldn't surprise me. Women are treated like shit in Japan. So they gotta "win" somehow.
many jumbled facts put in the wrong order or are just plain wrong
-
You know. Most of analogies are totally crap - like this one since you even didn't bother about information about your so called … "career".
Marketing.
But, what does religion have to do with this?
I don't know how to explain it or the proper concept since english is not my main language. But rather than religious I mean something more like be extremely sensitive to sexual gags by taking offence because of that. You know, like some religious jerk who thinks that looking at boobs will condemn you to hell :ninja:
Seriously, if people aren't able to get information about manga series that are CLEARLY classified as Etchi series before actually start to read it, they really shouldn't complain about seeing etchi stuff. It's as childish as crying about putting your hand on a heated stove right after your mommy cooked on it - and that is something called truth which is in fact hard to accept when you're criticized.
And most analogies are crap. Anyway I don't get your point since OP and HSOD aren't classified as H.
-
i just don't want a mermaid/fishwoman to take jinbes spot as next nakama is that so much to ask? damm all you people for taking this talking to far in the next nakama thread which caused this thread to be made!
i was not going to make this post however this thread seems like it wont die anytime soon so i am making it now
can we just let this thread die already? it is nothing but trolling and spamming it does not really belong in the manga section can we at least move it to general discussion at least?
-
can we just let this thread die already? it is nothing but trolling and spamming it does not really belong in the manga section can we at least move it to general discussion at least?
Is it too hard to ignore threads you're not interested in and let them die by their own?
-
I don't mind the enormous boobs so much as the almost non-existent mid-section.
Does need more sam'iches though.
-
But isn't that a significant part of what this thread is about?
No, this thread is actually about talking what fans think of how Oda depicts women in OP. There has been some complain in another thread that started to disrupt the discussions there…
Also why not complain? I like pineapples and sometimes when I get one it turns out to have some bad spots, I'll still eat it but I will also complain even if just to myself.
Jeez, if there really was something to complain, fine… But some only seem to have problems with how Oda designs female characters, as if smart and strong women weren't allowed to look good and actually have big boobs that resist gravity.
And it's not like there was a lot of different "food" out there they could "eat".
-
They are sexy with style and personality.
-
only thing that grinds my gears in one piece is how nami and robin don't make sammiches for the guys.
-
yeah honestly sanji take a break
map, shmap. learn to cook nami or you're gonna get the axe.
-
only thing that grinds my gears in one piece is how nami and robin don't make sammiches for the guys.
Yeah that's totally outrageous
-
as if smart and strong women weren't allowed to look good and actually have big boobs that resist gravity.
This is hilarious, mind if I put it in my sig?
-
-
Whats with the odd waist and stuff? Just look at Lola, Dadan, Kororo…alpha females
-
@2xN:
That doesn't tend to happen very much in the real world, only in the world of Japanese fiction. You should get out more. The worst thing a girl's gonna do to you is think you're some kind of creep, maybe share a laugh with her friends at your expense.
Ah, but see:
@Louis:Unless you're good looking, then you get giggled at.
And since I've been told I look like Gary Busey and Borat merged together via a shovel…
-
Episode 173 seemed super fanservicey. I think it should be rewatched.
I also wish that Nami after the timeskip still had an impact dial. If Usopp could use it on Luffy injured and before the time skip, she should be able to use it after the time skip. -
But that is fanservice from the TV show. Oda didn't have anything to do with it. Look it up in chapter 263.
-
I was mainly referring to her straddling his face, and the heart popping up and all.
-
On the topic of the girl's clothing (the skirts especially), Oda has a tendency to stretch women's proportions to the point that the short clothing might look revealing. I completely agree about the proportions of women being screwed up. In that picture of Boa, shes actually 9 head length long, maybe 9.25-10 if her legs weren't spread apart. The adjust Photoshop version you did was 8 head lengths long.
If anyone doesn't know about life drawing or idealized human proportions from ancient artists. The most average human (now a days) is about 7.5-7.5 head lengths long. A few ancient sculptures were made with 8-8.5 head lengths long by various artist to be within the mathematical golden ratio.
The way Oda draws the womans proportions goes way over even the golden ratio of idealized human proportions. As an artist stand point, I only read the manga for the story and the creativity into the character designs. Oda's female characters may not be the most beautiful, but he puts a lot into them to make them work.
-
I was mainly referring to her straddling his face, and the heart popping up and all.
And that is exactly the part where the anime exaggerated. Her crotch didn't come that close to ??tori's face in the manga.
