First thing I did when I came to Japan, I bought like twenty OP tanks. They're awesome and I feel satisfied having given Oda money. You really can learn from reading them too.
Databook: "One Piece Green"
-
-
Realized that on average, the databooks came out every 15 volumes.
I doubt it'll be there, but I want to see the designs of the original owners of a bunch of zombies. Sure, that'll include the Risky brothers, Cindry, and Lola, but it'd be cool to know the original owners of zombies like Taleran or Bearsy.
-
And I'm so glad I have them. Buying a Japanese tank is basically putting money directly in Oda's wallet.
Adding to this, approximately 10% of the price of the tankoubon goes towards the author.
That's a lot more direct feedback than most products I can think of in major entertainment media in ANY country. And yes, I own close to a thousand tankoubon. Used to be double that, but I gave them all away when I left Japan.
I probably won't be satisfied until I have five thousand.Buy em.
-
I'd love to have the logs, or the <15 years to go> Kanzenban.
-
Not having the tanks at home is a shame for everyone who calls himself an OP fan!!
Ohh and about those 80 neww secrets which will be revealed…
mhh let`s see i guess i know at least 75 of those already:ninja: -
When One Piece was like 30 volumes behind in America, I bought a bunch of japanese tanks. great idea. seriously, you all go do it too. I'm lucky enough to live near a japanese grocery/bookstore, so I don't even have to pay shipping. good times. :D
something no one else has mentioned, yet, is the sfx. Viz translates theirs, so "DON!" becomes "BOOM!" or "DOOM!", and of course that means the art has been altered as well. Oda didn't draw the panel with lots of little "BAM"s flying around, he drew it with lots of "GA"s flying around. not a huge difference, but I've always found reading japanese sfx to be fun. again, all you have to know is the katakana and hirigana.

Do you use forklifts to ferry them around or do you prefer asian imigrants ? :ninja:
-
There's actually a system in Japan specifically for shipping (your own) books overseas. It's far cheaper than normal international mailing.
-
Greg, can you give me a list of the features of the logs? I know that they have the color pages, in color, around 3 and a half volume worth of material, better paper and size, and the strawhat theatre.
Price? Other goodies? Mistakes fixed? Something else? They include the sbs?
-
Logs have actually gotten lamer as time has gone by.
They USED to include Oda's character design sketches and all sorts of goodies but now it's usually a shitty poster or two.
The tank covers they come with ARE pretty sweet though. Particularly the 'Heroes' and 'Villains' ones.

I…I really do wish I knew Japanese (is it bad that this is purely for the sake of reading One Piece in Japanese and playing Pokemon games 6 months earlier? Wish I knew Italian too...but that's because I am italian lol).
I've searched and nearest Japanese bookstores are a little distance away, so I haven't been able to buy any Japanese tanks yet. I have volumes 1 - 54 and Color Walk 1 in English. Would love to collect the data books / other color walks / etc. as well....maybe if I go to grad school in or around NYC which I'm considering...bound to be a lot of Japanese bookstores in NYC and the surrounding area right?
Also, would it be too much to hope for Strong World (chapter 0) to be in a data book? I would love to see it in print!

Italian American's arnt the same as Italians. Real Italians Scoff at Italian Americans because Italian-American has become a sub culture independent of Traditional Italian Culture.

Thanks professor mingo.

^ :p
Well, I'd love to buy the original japanese tanks but I imagine that the shipping cost to get them here (Iceland) is quite high…
on the + side I just realized that the only comic book store in Iceland actually sells one piece I never found it but there it was right in front of my nose, so I can start collecting! I already have 2 whoob! How expensive are they in, for example, america? Here they are about 16 dollars (1500 krónur)
-
Ace's tatoo?
I'd love if we were wrong in those kind of things.
-
Why an S is in Ace`s tattoo?
Thought it was obviously a mistake made from the tattooer. -
And that Sabo's flag and signature is a crossed out S didn't seem familiar to you?
-
we all know the S in ace's tattoo stands for sabo
-
You not rly explained it now..:ninja:

Going by the things mentioned in that ad, looks like most of the "secrets" are the kind of thing that usually gets brought up in the SBS, i.e. stuff the readers can either figure out or make accurate conjectures about, until Oda addresses it directly.
So it kind of makes sense that he might choose to focus on that in this databook, given that there's plenty of stuff that would take too long to bring up in the ~6 pages of SBS per volume. And it also makes sense that he won't likely drop any CRAAAAZY bombshell secrets in the book–the manga should stand on its own for those who don't choose to buy the supplemental material.

Yeah, Oda already using all this precious space to fill it with weird humor and dump questions where i have no idea how they get into the tank.

20 days until Green! :D
-
I'm sticking to the Viz volumes for now (I've got the first 38 volumes). I'm not against reading the series in Japanese. In fact, I'll even mention that the Japanese Jump One Piece site j-onepiece.com has snippets of the series in Japanese version.
In fact, if you click the first of the two beige bars near One Piece 59, you can read the whole first chapter of the volume. It's not the same as buying it and giving Oda a contribution (or other benefits from buying it in book), but it's not the same as going to find some unofficial raw scans either.
Oda's fonts play a huge part for one as far as canon material goes. Looking at the script he uses for important lines, even if you don't know what they mean, can sometimes impact how much emotion or comedy a scene holds.
Viz changes the font for certain lines too. The size of the Viz fonts might not always change as much as in the Japanese volumes though, but to some extent the Viz fonts do change.
Furthermore, if you actually own them and DO continue learning Japanese, you can (DERP) read them in Japanese which is, without doubt, THE only way to read it.
If I one day do decide to collect the whole series of One Piece volumes in Japanese, then this would be when I'd prefer to do it- when I know a lot more Japanese. I do know most hiragana and katakana (but I keep mixing up a few pairs of symbols) and a tiny bit of kanji, so technically I can pretty much read what the Japanese says.
(You are saying buy all the Japanese volumes, right? Or just some of them at least?)
And oh yeah.
http://www.thegrandline.com/images/021cover.jpg
'nuff said.
That's cool (and I've personally seen that before) but I'm in no rush to buy the Japanese volumes for something like this.
I will say this- looks like I'll be visiting New York City late December. Hopefully I'll be able to go to the Kinokuniya bookstore. I at least plan to get things like the Databooks (since Viz might never translate them), Wanted, and maybe the last three Color Walks. Stuff I don't think Viz'll translate soon, if ever. (Maybe the other Color Walks will come here one day but I dunno about the databooks.) Any volumes I get'll probably be the ones Viz hasn't released yet.
(Speaking of Color Walks, I hope Green has an ad for Color Walk 5, since the end of Color Walk 4 said they were working on it. But if not, oh well.)
@RobbyBevard:
I didn't discover until just today that Gecko Moria's name has the word "bat" right in the middle of it.
I'm sure its an incredibly obvious pun to those that can read and understand the Japanese that they get instantly.
In no way does that make it to the English translation. The fact that I only learned this…3 years after Moria first appeared? Yeah. Missing stuff with just the english translation.
That's… not a loss crucial to the plot. It would be better if the pun worked in English, but I don't think the lack of a "bat" reference is a big loss. Name puns like that wouldn't be my motivation to buy the Japanese version.
But that does remind me of how in the Baratie Arc, Zoro was looking for Hawk-Eye Mihawk at Baratie and a cook said that Hawk-Eye wasn't there but someone named "Red-Eye/s" was. I didn't realize the similarity between "hawk" and "red" in Japanese ("taka" and "aka" until much later.)
And there are other losses too, definitely. But even so, I'm in no rush to get the entire Japanese series of volumes because of things like that.
Tanks are generally 4 or 5 bucks if you're getting them from a reputable source. Shipping will kill you if you get them one at a time, but in bulk its not so bad at all.
Any anime con should have a crapload.
Animazement (I went this year and last year- 2008 I came so late they were packing everything up) has Japanese graphic novels, but they didn't have One Piece. And I was looking too- I really would've bought at least one of them there if they were there.
-
I'd love to get my hands on One Piece Green! Reading these databooks has always been a big treat.
Pertaining to the Japanese tanks discussion…most OP tanks I own are my country's translated version, but I bought volumes 56, 57, 58, and 59 in its original Japanese. And they are SO different. The Japanese tanks tops our translated versions in every way I can imagine. I never knew they changed fonts according to the dialogue. I never knew they had the squiggles (~~~) in one, connected line. I never realized Iva's winks had triple dakuten markers ( ゛) until it was pointed out in a SBS. Et cetera. It was frustrating to see how I had missed out on so much of Oda-sensei's details. Especially when I bought the translated vol.58 and saw it was edited horrendously.
So that's my take on the issue. I'm still debating with myself; I know if buy only Japanese tanks it'll take me a whole day to get through one. But it'll be worth it.

Real Italians are jerks then >_<. Scoffing is not necessary. I can't help the country I was born in. I want to visit Italy someday so I want to know the language. I can do some of the cooking! =D My grandpop's family were immigrants, so he used to speak it, but has lost it in the 15 years since my great grandmom passed away. -
Well, they started to promote some of the so-called 80 'secrets' of OP to be revealed in Green.
Thus far looks like they're going to 'explain' the 'S' in Ace's tattoo and 'reveal' that Luffy's scribble for the shipwright looked like Franky.
Calling it now.
They're gonna count Luffy's desire for a bronze lion statue actually becoming Sunny as a 'secret'.
I noted these Luffyisms years ago in my profile:
Luffy's vagarious imagination has a tendency of coming true. His outlandish ideas that he puts to paper which resemble toddler-like scrawls and his decidedly oddball expectations for unknown locations often tend to come true one way or another. Author Oda Eiichiro also makes it a point for Luffy NEVER to point out the fact that he was right about something while everyone else simply rolled their eyes. This is probably because A) It's makes a nice Easter Egg for careful readers and B) Luffy never doubts he could be wrong to begin with.
Let's place bets. I'll say there will only be 7 secrets that AP missed.
-
IF luffy is always right then that makes him a genius and the smartest member of the strawhats :O
-
Or he could just have incredible dumb luck.
-
Got my One Piece Yellow in the mail today. I wonder how long it'll take for Glénat to translate Green after it's out. The secrets probably won't be that big, but there's always something you didn't know.
-

You could wait for that or come here and read my translations of everything new just like with Yellow.
-

I'll probably do both. Online translations act as temporary for me, and it always feels nice to have the real deal in book format (although not the japanese original, because I wouldn't understand it). ;)
-
So someone actually publishes the book? That's funny as hell. Is it legally done?

Well I suppose you'll have at least to wait for the volume 60 to be released.
-

I believe he is talking about the French releases yes its legal, they have always done their release almost on par with Japan unlike Viz, atleast in the Bookstores here in Portugal I remember seeing the Viz versions of the manga in like volume 20 and the French 3/4 volumes behind the japanese release and even the book material is more like the japanese version, etc.
Anyway it is legal ofc.
Im sure herr_sebbe can explain it better.
-
France's One Piece logo is worse than ours :D
-

Glénat in France and Egmont/Carlsen in Denmark that I know of. I prefer French, since Danish sounds too much like a bad accent to someone who's native in Swedish (No offence to anyone).
I have access to one Japanese volume and two French from the actual series, and the French are actually very true to the original at least in shape. Except for the uninspired change of Logotype… :ninja:
Edit: Corrected Denmark publication mistake. Thanks Areebee. ;)
-
One Piece is published by Egmont/Carlsen in Denmark and I believe they're translated from the german versions reather than the japanese since there's often german words left in the speech bubbles, apparently missed by the translators.
We've also only gotten Red and Blue databooks in Denmark so far. -
[hidE][/hidE]
In case anyone was curious. -
Here in Germany we have Red, Blue and Yellow. And two Novels (Ganzack and Lougetown) And 1 Colorwalk which is out of print >_>, And we're up to 55 and 56 the end of this month.

We've also only gotten Red and Blue databooks in Denmark so far.Same with the Swedish ones, but with a twist. The printings are German, but the translations are made straight from Japanese. Though we haven't gotten any of the Databooks…
-
Maybe the Danish ones are translated from japanese as well, but there's still the occasional german word here and there. It's really quite strange.

Ohhhhhh my gosh. That is a teeeerrible idea. Blech.
That's cool that there are countries that legally do it though! It's a GREAT way to get new fans interested and caught up.
-

There are actually people stupid enough in this world to think the series is called Ne Pec.
-
Yes, the Danish version is translated from German. I know this because the translator himself sent me an e-mail talking about how he uses my scripts to cross-check his work (since the German edition apparently isn't all that good).
-
The german translation has got better (at least in the tanks) since the end of Water7 in my eyes.
It
s sure far from perfection, but comparing them to the first tanks where the german version is just crap it has improved A LOT. Now you finally get at least the facts most of the time correct. Also a nice edition is that some weird slangs a chara uses in the japanese original, is now translated with german slangs which is sometimes a bit weird but a good way to at least show us german readers that this chara has a unique style of talking(which wasn
t used before..but so i also don`t know if many charas appeared for example in the EB-saga with a weird slang. But knowing Oda iam sure of it)Iam rly glad that Carlsen switched their translators for the german edition and we now finally don`t have to scream in pain that often over horrible translation errors which can influence the story.

Yowza.
Not gonna put down anything I haven't read but, that really sounds like a bad idea.
