Honestly I can't believe people can stomach this garbage just for the sake of wacky character interactions. If the manga just had that, it would be harmless enough. But there are so many offending plot contrivances, that it just isn't worth it. Like going on a water slide and having someone pull your hair, spit on you and then urinate on you the entire way.

And you know what? I've been meaning to say this for a while but the character interactions suck too. As comedy and fun goes, they're decent enough. But my god, they always give such an air of being shallow and pointless. They never really develop the characters or show different or new sides to them or even experiment a little with the gags or even change and evolve a little. It's always the same knee-jerk reactions every damn time you expect from the characters and it doesn't help that all the characters (except Erza) are some of the most bland and/or insufferable characters you can imagine.

A.) Hiro Mashima is a damn good artist,

B.) It can still intentionally make me chuckle from time to time

TLS is right, though.

Bleach and Fairy Tail are very good studies in how not to tell a story, how not to build tension, plot, pacing & characterization pitfalls to avoid, and how not to reward one's readers.

Just like reading Twilight allows you to understand fully why it is potentially appealing and what elements work, despite it being literary dogshit.

Character interactions are the heart of a manga. It's where the author's creativity and soul can truly shine. While of course, they're not as fundamentally important as a good plot and story structure, they are what really catches and holds a readers interest and go a long way in displaying an author's dedication and passion so really they are quite important themselves. But really the issue isn't their importance so much that they're the only half decent thing in this manga and even they are terribly shallow.

Writing on my cellphone so I can't break things up as usual but in order:
1. I ain't giving the manga the satisfaction of beating me. I wasted so much time on it already, I might as well see it through to the end so I can party on its corpse. Besides I'm curious how the mess will end.
2. I dabble. I'm mostly a fan of story telling in general both the good and the bad but mostly the good.
3. Good for you. Me, this blatant desecration of manga writing just offends me. But like a train wreck, I can't look away.

Chapter was okay. Lamia Scale's Guildmaster is really old and really ugly; The Raven Tail guild members look… interesting, and Meredy got HOT in the last seven years. Not sure how I feel about Ultear fixing their dilemma, but whatever. Internal Limiters and removing them have been done before to death in other series, even modern ones (Toriko has them, though the limiters in that series are removed by certain foods). At least she and Gerard are good guys, now. I also hope Bob participates in the tournament; him and Ichiya are the only non-bishonen of the guild and the only mages that didn't get curbstomped right away, though I do like Hibiki's magic. Maybe he's improved his ability with Archive in the last seven years.

My excuse? For what it's worth, I kinda like Fairy Tail. Maybe "really like" it. "Love it" even. It's like… a constantly leaking source of inspiration. No, for real. I'm serious as hell. Not convinced? Well, you can go fuck yourself.

This may seem personal(well it is), and may not apply for everyone(everyone isn't me obviously, so... screw them), but FT is isn't really a manga for me. Sure, I treat it like one and pretend to take shit seriously in an attempt to live up to the lame expectations of this dreaded topic but I honestly get something out of this series. As someone who once wanted to become a game designer, I was always playing the worst of games and thinking of myself making these games better. There wasn't a product for me to create, but the amount of thoughts you can put into a potentially great gaming design with bad execution an really go a long way. It's like being passed down a torch from an already unfit Olympian. Now switch over those gaming terms to some lowly geeky manga terms, and you have yourself my explanation. FT to me is simply a product I love learning from, and for that.... I don't hate Fairy Tail, it's popularity, or care much at all for the general consensus here on AP.

Believe me, there's a ton of bad manga out there. So bad, you can probally get nothing. So bad, you probably wonder why people even choose to live with it like a bunch of obsessively geeky masochist that fancies being mutually tutored to please their inner "I need to rant" fetish like it's as nessary as breathing air to live. In those cases, I would not even bother with the series and move on to the next.

And that's my opinion. Well, it may as well be a confession. But, you guys can't do anything to me other than grate your teeth at this post in the background. Not very effective.

ESPECIALLY since Fairy Tail is clearly no where near the ending, unlike say Naruto. I can't even say confidently it is halfway yet, cause really there is no general plot besides finding the dragons because the dragon slayers are lonely.

There are plenty of manga, books, even only 2 hour movies that I have quit watching because they were so bad or boring. If Fairy Tail was so bad, you guys would quit reading it. So quit having that pathetic excuse. And a few of them are like 300 + running series as well, or longer than Fairy Tail.

I'm sure you guys all go out and listen to the entire Jusin Beiber album too, cause you like seeing how all his new shitty songs are too right? There is a difference to listening to say Rebecca Black's "Friday" mutliple times cause its hilarious, compared ot listening to Justin Beibers entire album. Reading Fairy Tail at this point and in the future is a long MANGA, and its no excuse to say you are just reading it cause its bad. No reading a 30 chapter manga or less is understandable for the "humor" of how bad it is. But reading a 300+ manga is not. Your just a closet Bieber fan, while making fun of beiber to your friends to be "cool"

The thick part is completely wrong. I for one, started reading Fairy Tail because someone once said Rave is the worst thing on paper, so I got intrigued to see just how bad this Mashima fella is. Dropped it before the timeskip because of how ungodly painful it was to read, but picked it up again just because I heard the way this guy handled the skip, that it may be one of the worst ways anybody ever did it.

And he was right.

yo, hate to break it to you, but your observation is almost completely wrong. While there may be some who treat this garbage as a guilty pleasure, a lot of us read this out of hatred for the series, out of simple habit, some to especially poke fun at it. Everybody has his reasons and seeing you "analyzing" the user base here just makes me lol. you know absolutely nothing.

I'm just here for the trainwreck. I don't think I secretly like Fairy Tail. Or make fun of it to be "cool". I have dropped it several times and only skimmed over some of the arcs. The dragon twist sort of just cemented the series as a guilty pleasure to me because it was so poorly executed. You don't do timeskips like that.

Its funny reading the forums. Like every chapter during the arc you guys are talking about how good it was, and its potential and so and so, then the end comes and you guys say this is the worst series ever.

Its like if you go to a restuarant and the food is great, you love the food, yet every time you eat there you get food poisoning. Any sane person would quit going to that restuarant. It's really funny how people keep saying you're wrong, yet they say afterwards they read Fairy Tail for seeing how badly executed e.g. the timeskip was. Then they indirectly admit that they read something they hate, simply for anazyling how it's bad and then saying that they dislike it. That's exactly the same as your Bieber analogy even though they refuse to acknowledge it.
So well, I actually agree with you in most of your points.

One good thing, however, is that this thread is more bearable than, say, Narutoforums. A lot of people there are like the people in this thread, but sadly there are also people (more than one) who seem to like the series because a 12-years old girl, who looks like a 6-year-old and constantly wears miniskirts, is one of the main characters.

I wouldn't take the time to go in depth and analyze something I hate because that means Iv'e become a fan in a sense. The people who criticize twilight only need to see every movie once not 3 times so they can find arbitrary ways to parody it and avoid its pitfalls that would be pretty obvious after the first viewing.

It makes perfect sense, you guys are coming back every week, and surprisingly within minutes or at worse hours of the chapter release. Hell even checking out spoilers of this manga all in order to come in and say "holy shit, this is such a bad manga"

Its like your camping out at barnes and noble in order to rush in and buy the next "gay porn" magazine on release day and then being disgusted over all the gay men in the magazine.

I have a million more analogies I could use, but you can't deny that it seems strange that all you guys are reading this manga within hours/minutes of its release EVERY WEEK only to come and bitch about it. Naruto or Bleach I can understand a little better ONLY due to them being released right around One Piece (sometimes before, sometime after) But this manga is days later, when I dont' think there is really much of anything else being released around now either. Its basically only Fairy Tail at this time, yet you guys are basically waiting for it. If you just read it casually once in a while in order to see how bad it was, why is that "casual" always seem to be within the hour of its next release EVERY WEEK. Man the business world would be so much better if everyone just "casually" came to work every day like you guys casually read Fairy Tail. No one would ever be late. Hell people would be coming into work early even.

I make fun of people who like twilight and say how bad it is. Guess what I saw onl;y the first two movies. Never going to see the others. The first one, didn't know anything about what Twilight was at all. Some girls convinced me to go saying it was a movie with vampires and warewolves and a chick flick. Figured maybe best of two worlds, guys and girls can like. Wow it was HORRIBLE. Somehow the commercials for the second movie made me go see it thinking maybe it was going to be more action toned and fantasy over the god aweful teenage soap opera. The second was worse. Will never make mistake of going to those movies ever again.

Learn from me Fairy Tail "fans" QUIT READING THE MANGA. If your going to keep going to the midnight showings, don't expect me to feel sorry for you when Hiro trolls you yet again in some manner.

I won't lie FT entertains me but not because it's good. Like Bleach, it's so bad I find it laughable. I enjoy making fun of seemingly Mashima is making shit up as he goes, not being consistent, and the overall mediocreness of it all. Once you expect it as a manga where the mangaka is trolling it's readers or better yet thinks they're producing a great work you can't help but be amused.

Plus like I said it does pass the time inbetween other mangas. I don't await spoilers or go looking for them. I don't actually care since Mashima doesn't. I mean I still Reborn as well. FT is just like one of those ugly things you don't look away from.

Hinscher just because you are the only person (or one of few) that genuinely likes this trash manga doesn't mean you have to get all butthurt about it and concoct conspiracies and over analyze about everybody else posting in here secretly liking the manga but are just saying they don't like it because it's renowned as a bad manga around here.

I get what you are saying, but I think you have missed a big point. You seem unable to grasp the concept that people intentionally read something despite, and perhaps because, knowing it's bad without any ulterior motive. I can tell you I don't secretly like Bleach or Naruto. Hell I'll even point out when something was genuinely good in either of those series. Speaking of though:

Let's just take some awful series like Bleach and Naruto for instance. I read those chapters each week. In fact, I usually look forward to them just as much as One Piece. They're terrible series that I still read. Why?

1. Because I have already invested myself into the series so far so it doesn't hurt to take a few minutes out of every week (or a single minute in Bleach's case) to read them online for free
2. I can usually get a chuckle out of each because of how objectively fetid they are, especially so when current events retroactively ruin parts of the story back when it was good
3. I get to be able to discuss the chapters with people I enjoy and some people I tolerate, which is probably the most enjoyment I receive at all some weeks
4. As a writer myself, I basically get to learn how NOT to do things. I live under the belief that one can't properly appreciate the finer things in life unless you've been through the terrible things as well. Like I cannot appreciate my rare trips to luxurious restaurants enough unless I've had my fair share of fast food.

tl;dr version: try not to be so offended when people point out how something bad is bad for fun.

There's hardly any humour in the way that some people in this thread make fun of the series. In the Bleach and Naruto thread, it's usually decently humourous because people don't take those series very seriously at this point, but nine times out of ten, this thread is usually just bashing or saying "ARGH THIS IS THE WORST SERIES EVER" every single time that a new chapter comes out.

That's my main problem with this thread - a lot of people take Fairy Tail way too seriously, especially when this series doesn't take itself particularly seriously to begin with! That's one of the things that I like about both Fairy Tail and One Piece - no matter how dark things get at certain points in the story line, I know that they're still going to maintain that energy and humour that Naruto, Bleach, Reborn, etc. lost a long time ago.

You don't continue reading something unless you enjoy it in some sort of way.

How you enjoy a manga is up to you - whether you enjoy the way the author intended, the story, the art, the characters etc, or in a more sadistic way, ie the flawss, the mistakes, the stupidity.

If you read Fairy Tail it doesn't mean you like it, but it means you get some form of enjoyment by reading it. Otherwise, why would you read it?

B.)Did you really think Mashima was going to kill off the main cast?

C - As a writer myself the way mashima handled it was indeed poorly done. Honestly Crime Sorciere should of been the ones to find the island have ultear tell them that they have all been "frozen" for 7 years that use her magic to slow down time making the island a hyberbolic time chamber. Of course if that were to happen people on this board would find reasons to bitch about it.
