As usual, it is surprisng to see the Southern and and Central Americas in better colours. Does it really show their situation accurately?
Well yeah. Aside from French Guiana which is colored the same as France, but as an overseas department probably has a lower standard of living then most of actual France.
@JERK:
Where did you read that, because it sounds extremely wrong.

5 years old though. They may not be number one anymore but I guess they are very high up there.
Lots of Gulf countries near the top, I guess they have cash to burn so why not.
The BRIC countries have quite a difference in this index, with a gap of 0,300 with India at the bottom and Russia on top and China and Brazil right in the middle.
Power to the Norway, I suppose.
What's the deal with the UK? not as green as the main land.
And Portugal the same as Libia?
Russia being lower than Libya amuses me for some reason.

Norway has oil.
I'm pretty sure the other Scandis stereotype them as rich.

You got that right. Even though we Finns aren't exactly Scandinavians but whatever…

Oil. And gas. And aluminum. And fish which only China exports more.
Stereotypes, eh? All of them have a rating of 0.8+, and for comparatively small countries like theirs it doesn't really make a difference, whether it is some 0.05 digits higher or lower.
Last year I was in Sweden, close to the norwegian borders. It looked like the same region on both sides of it - people speak almost the same language, drive almost the same cars, live in almost the same houses - and are really chill at it.

I still think we're lucky. Could have been like you guys with Australia.

Fuckin' Aussies.
What's up with Eritrea being all grey? I thought things had improved a bit during the last few years. No information coming from there seems a bit odd when they do have Zimbabwe's data. Zephos? Anyone?
@JERK:
Well, if there's one thing I can take away from that map it's to stay the fuck away from Zimbabwe.
Care to elaborate why Zimbabwe's apparently shittier than North Korea, Zephos?
Is Somalia worse than Zimbabwe in reality Zephos?
@Cyan:

North Korea's grey cause they don't have enough data to give an accurate HDI. It'd still probably be better than Zimbabwe tbh.

Shit, I mistook it for Laos.

Gadaffi really has made amazing progress since his rise to power. I know he's really messed up over the years trying out different political moves and such, but he's always learnt from his mistakes and turned what could have been a third world country into a thriving haven for investment and academic achievements. (students)
I wouldn't go far as to say they'll be the next Dubai, but definitely someone we should keep an eye out for. Blairs visit seemed like a defining moment in history that turned it from a national of terrorists to how we currently perceive them. Though the Whitehouse took a while to accept this new status.
interesting and enlightening thread.
there were definitely some surprises on there. huge ones at that.
i have read similar things lately that are suggesting a lot of countries are raising their standards of living. for example, many countries have already been recovering from the global "recession."
as a vietnamese-american, i also like that vietnam is one of the fastest developing "third world" countries.

It doesn't have to do with government bullshit probably. As I said, new things were factored into the new methodology, and whatever that data was Eritrea might not have been able to supply.
@Cyan:
Care to elaborate why Zimbabwe's apparently shittier than North Korea, Zephos?
We don't know NK's HDI, so we can't really say if it's shittier. I'm willing to guess there is a higher standard of living in NK, but much more political repression (no one beats NK on that account).
Zimbabwe's economy completely collapsed, they have a 94% unemployment rate.
Is Somalia worse than Zimbabwe in reality Zephos?
…...
I can't say. I really can't. The HDI is very technical and statistical, data on Somalia is near zilch due to the non government.
I get the feeling there's more of an active economy even if it's mostly black market.
And I can say that Somaliland is above Zimbabwe in living standards.
Parts of Somalia are an active war zone though, which is always worse then stable misery like in Zimbabwe.

Which ones in particular. Because that's what I like the most with these threads, dispelling preconceptions and myths.

And let me guess, the remaining six percent is composed of government folk or military.
Christ, does it ever fucking end with Africa?

Libya and it being higher than Russia and China.
@JERK:

Yeah, their economy is really bad, I remember that few months ago a dollar was worth several millions (or maybe billions) Zimbabwe dollars, they even have a 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollar banknot due to the hyperinflation:
!
This country is way too messed up, even for a African country.
@Cyan:
Christ, does it ever fucking end with Africa?
I do believe that it won't end soon. Not with the leaders mindset and not with the current system.
@JERK:
Which ones in particular. Because that's what I like the most with these threads, dispelling preconceptions and myths.
pretty much most of what has been said already.
as an example i've not seen brought up yet; i've been severely underestimating mexico, believing it to be low-ish 3rd world until today >.>
this thread has been very educational for me, thanks for that.
What exactly makes the USA and Australia better than Scandinavia and Western Europe? I get Norway, but not the othet two dark greens.
Gaddafi has a squadron of sexy female bodyguards of varying races and uniforms.
He is literally a Bond villain.

Lol yeah, I also like how he sets up bedouin tents when officially visiting Paris for example.
A real clown dictator. It does help that 90% of Libiya is composed of sand and just has a population of a couple of millions. Makes it easier to handle.
Gaddafi fucking owns

When you see Gadaffi, you just get the feeling that competent authoritarianism owns traditional democracy.

Democracy = Freedom and rights; stiffs in suits
Authoritarianism = No freedoms, no rights, possibly no money, and iron fist leadership; fuckin' awesome robes and hot babes
Why are government systems so unbalanced.
What we really need is authoritative MONARCHIES.

Recall what thread it was in?

Aside from Libya, there are a few that kinda surprise me. Like Argentina, Peru, and Chile doing better than Brazil. I'm actually surprised at how well Mexico is doing. The relatively good condition of Saudi Arabia and Iran is also interesting. Also, I had no idea that Brunei, Taiwan and South Korea were so well off.
But then again, I know fuckall about global politics.
Doesn't Gadaffi sleep in a tent wherever he visits?
Gadaffi: Born in the desert, educated in England, surrounded 24/7 by an escort of virgin assassins. lol
I think Gadaffi should be an example on how a leader should dress.
Africa's economy and people have been raped and pillaged for too many years so it's not surprising they're still in the ruts. They're really not helping themselves out either with the constant civil wars. Despite all their natural resources (diamonds, gold, oil) they are still struggling as one of the poorest developing nations in the world.
Those natural resources are part of the problem.
@JERK:
Those natural resources are part of the problem.
That's true, the natural resources are reasons for civil wars along with ethnic conflict. Also poor handling of the natural resources contributes to the problem because instead of being used to improve the economy they're just making the wealthiest in the nation wealthier.
I love Gaddafi, I think with his tent camp and horses he probably thinks himself like a historical war leader, kinda like Aurungzeb showing up outside enemy cities to lay siege with his moving capital city of 50000 elephants.
Also, I had no idea that Brunei, Taiwan and South Korea were so well off.
Brunei has one of the biggest prospective oil and gas reserves in the world, I think I read somewhere the sultan has the biggest supercar collection on the planet or something. Small population and filthy rich, there are more motor vehicles than humans in the country.
I've been to Borneo and it is an absolutely beautiful island, I guess I really am a country boy born in the city, loved the hiking, the climbing, canoeing and via ferrata we traversed there. The culture is a completely different pace to the UK.
I would love to work for the NPC in Brunei, am currently on BP Singapore's UK cadet programme, the problem is all these international petro companies in Brunei, the Emirates and wherever want guys with like 10 years experience to come and run project, they're not investing in training people up.
South Korea you obviously know; Seoul a smouldering wreck after the war and in 50 years a glittering city has sprung up in its stead. Taiwan is pretty precarious with the Chinese situation.

That was beautiful.
definitely sending this to my friends.

The Economist - US equivalents
A fun little scheme. I wonder how accurate is this comparison. And huh, Zephos lives in UAE, Robby - in Russia, and Holy - in Thailand. Anyone else?

I wish they'd let you download such an interactive graph. Really useful. What amazes me, is how the african continent has developed it's health situation - it might be nothing compaired to the western society, but seeing life expectancy there doubled is nice.
However, it just as much depressing to see countries below the $400 mark.
