I live in a fucking forest. Cold forest. Filled with very very unsocial people. No interesting culture.
Try to guess what is this wonderful place.Nottingham.
@dirt:no Smudge you don't understand vast civilization of advancement
My mind is too simple to comprehend the complexities of this issue, perhaps I should get help from my teacher, he's from Holland too.

@Kairouseki:
I went to Odessa, Texas because that was where my brother and his wife lived and almost every 14-17 year old girl we saw was pregnant .
Pfffft
Text wall alert, here is my thoughts on that:
Honestly, a big reason for why teen pregnancy is such a huge issue in the US is parents don't really take the time to talk and explain to their kids about sex and the consequences. Parent's do not instill in their child's mind what this happening really is like. This goes hand in hand with our current lifestyle, most teenagers in the US today are not working to support their livelihood. I've taken a couple of jobs but I never needed to, I've always had what I needed and mostly a lot of the stuff I wanted. Teens now a days are really not being exposed or have to deal with the hard facts of reality and have not made really any mistakes that could forever alter their way of life. And of course the other contributing factors of peer pressure, the media, the under developed frontal lode leading to more impulsive judgment, etc.
Sex is still a very taboo subject in the daily lives of most Americans. As a whole it's still seen as something private/personal and/or dirty to talk about. However, the world is moving to an age where frank discussion of sex is acceptable and commonplace among the masses. However, the current generation of adults (maybe people ages 35+) were raised in more conservative times. Now the world was by no means pure in the 60s-80s or even before that, but obviously homes were still a bit more stable. Just take what I'm saying with a grain of salt and don't think of some stupid hippie rebuttal. I've lived in Texas my whole life, and I've lived between the city and bible town BFE. The people I've been around for the majority of my life aren't as liberal as a lot of the people in parts of the country are, so deal with it.
Going back to the adult thing, most of these people were raised in the church where of course sex outside of marriage is a sin. To even talk about it is dirty.
To get to the point of this, these parents were raised in a controlled enviorment where the parents instilled their ideas about sex in them. Nowadays kids are raised by the media and strangers, so parents do not have a lot of control in what their children learn, but they are irresponsible and don't try to teach their children about their views/educate them about sex.
A lot of these girls getting pregnant aren't promiscuous or hos, they're normal girls who see that sex is an expression of love, but don't understand its an expression of DEEP, true love. At first girls (and boys) don't know the difference between a crush and love. They're also more impulsive and will act without thinking about the consequences of not using protection.
It's like if you were never told a stove is hot, you probably touched a stove to figure out its hot. This is the same principle.
And part of the comment about being out in the country and you have nothing better to do might be true in some cases. I see a lot of people marrying right after high school and having babies right away. Now honestly, from what I have gathered, a lot of these marriages had to do with pressure from the church (as for ones outside of the church I can only guess), to get married so you don't commit fornication. While fornication might be a sin, guilting two young people into getting married so they don't have sex is awful. Much better off doing the deed and repenting and moving on then getting married and being stuck in an awful marriage before they are ready, and if one of these goes south they will be pressured not to divorce. So far I've seen none of these things happen, these young people all might actually deeply love each other. Some people can actually pull it off. It's a totally different environment then the big city.
But again this is just my experience. There are so many different experiences people go through that shape the way they make their decisions.

As for other cultures, they are all obviously inferior to own:ninja:

@dirt:
so then you're in the Bronze Age as opposed to the Neolithic?
I guess you could call it like that. This countries Golden Age passed about a year ago, when smoking in bars was outlawed, along with the sale of dried shrooms. Not to mention the increase of politicians sprouting off populistic bullshit so they can get more votes from dumb, uneducated people. Apparently, the economic crisis is the fault of students and high-income people. They took our jobs !

Weve advanced as far as we can, now its time to regress a bit.
I could really go for some monarchy right about now.

Yes.
Holland is a shining utopia compared to the rest of the world.
We're basically the Morlocks to your Eloi.

Nah you cant find any good kings south of germany, im thinking we should tap into the house of Holstein-Gottorp again.
Cant beat those germans when it comes to shopping or royalty.

We went German eighty years ago.
Can't beat it.

lemme know when you guys remake the gundestrup cauldron and come out of the Bronze Age again
-
Yes.
Holland is a shining utopia compared to the rest of the world.
We're basically the Morlocks to your Eloi.
In the year AD 802,701 humanity has evolved into two separate species: the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi are the spoiled, attractive group, living a banal life of ease on the surface of the earth, while the Morlocks live underground, tending machinery and providing food, clothing and infrastructure for the Eloi.
sounds more like mexicans and americans.

Theyve just got the best parts, and they are made to last. Not like those japanese emperors that just fall apart after three years.
While we tried a french one and we havent been in a war since.
And let me tell ya things just havent been the same since we stopped trying to steal everyones land.

I don't live anywhere near Odessa though. Or been close to getting pregnant at any time.
Oh and I totally forgot the part about the awesome sex ed thing we did in 6th grade. The only time we got some really good honest sex ed that wasn't "just be abstinent"

@Kairouseki:
There were some people trying to get the name changed but it never happened. I for one though think "Freedom Fries" sounds awesome though .
If I remember correctly, the whole Freedom Fries thing got started in the Republican party, due to France's vehement opposition to assisting the US in the current Iraq War.

There should be rules against that kind of misleading. Its really mucking up my ethnic stereotyping.

So keeping this location forever now.

Wish I lived somewhere with a more diverse culture, it's very interesting to read this thread. Texas is by no means a melting pot or anything much of cultural significance. Well, some places are trying but it'll be awhile before its widely accepted.
It's a bit hurtful when people are snarky about not knowing a lot firsthand about different cultures, but it's not like I had a choice where I was born. I can't help my hometown was 97% white, it might be a little less now but still its the majority. It was a little culture shock when we moved to the suburbs because there was a larger (not huge at the time, but much larger then out in the country) number of minorities.
And there maybe more cultures living together but they're not totally intertwined into one big thing. Its starting to get there, but its a slow process.
-
lol The suburbs was a culture shock?
Come on up to Seattle. Apparently, other people find it really diverse and freethinking or something.
-
Odessa's basically in the middle of nowhere. We drove through 3 hours of desert before reaching it from Dallas. It was just so surreal. I saw multiple bottlecaps melted to the ground and my little brother's watch even melted when we left it in the car.
Well, over Spring Break I'm going to Spain and France so I get to experience other cultures :happy: . I also get to find out that my Spanish sucks horribly.

@Usopp D. Teach:
How come that the dutch society changed so much over the last 10 years?
How come that a hilarious like Pim Fortuyn could be so successful? (not really him, he was already dead when his party won the votes)..a homo right-wing.

Thank you sir from the bottom of my heart. If not for you and your noble action that would have driven me crazy before long.

I've never even been to Odessa. I'm from east Texas, and I've lived up in dallas suburbs, but I'm back out east for college for awhile. (well not at the moment, but most of the time XD).
That was a long time ago, now it's no big deal, but going from the country to the city was a big experience at the time XD I wish for more diversity, it's a lot more fun that way. I've grown very tired of crotchety old white people ALL THE TIME.

I thought they were all vikings, and wore spiked hats and pillaged other towns.

sweden, norway & denmark.
Austria, hmm, if you wanna understand us you must remember 2 things:-
Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube.
Nam quae Mars aliis, dat tibi diva Venus. -
Back in our days the House of Habsburg ruled more or less half of the known world, and now.. Austria is essentially just a left over..

Things changed since his assasination. And now with the crisis and all politicians are desperate for votes, even though the real solution to their problems would be to just not make retarded decisions that piss off the people. They can't do that for some reason, so they have to come up with lies to gain some support.

Question for people from Holland:
A friend told me, you have very good universities for 900 euro a year, how true is this?
He also said average standard wage is over 1000 euro a month..I go to a private university in Greece for my MBA, where my degree will be from France and I pay 6000 a year.
If I decided to study for one more additional degree while working, I'd like to know my options.

^^ yeah - good one. A pity that you aren't allowed to tell cellar jokes in front of kids.
@AL: I almost forgot that Italy is missing this one vital part of a developed country: affordable flats.
