The rating didn't make the movie. The original trilogy were all PGs and they were still awesomer by a HUGE margin.
Duel of the Fates = epic music. You notice its played in all three new movies at at least one point? Episode III, despite terrible acting and dialogue, was kinda fun to watch though…what with all the lightsaber fights and Ian McDiarmid's Emperor Palpatine owning everyone. That was cool.

PG back in 1977 was akin to the current PG today, hence the limb cutting and darker tones.
R rating back in 77 meant porn movies.
Keep that in mind.
@Wikipedia:
The PG-13 rating is adopted
In 1984, explicit violence and gore in the films Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins caused an uproar among parents over their PG rating.[10][11] Their complaints led Hollywood figure Steven Spielberg, director of Temple of Doom and producer of Gremlins, to suggest a new rating to MPAA president Jack Valenti. Spielberg's suggestion was for an intermediate rating of PG-13 or PG-14.[12] On conferring with cinema owners, Valenti and the MPAA on July 1, 1984, introduced the PG-13 rating indicating that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
So I re-iterate, PG-13 was the best thing to happen to the NEW Trilogy.

Funny thing about the Star Trek movie is that J.J. Abrams is a Star Wars guy and he NEVER liked the Star Trek series… he made the movie how a Star Wars fan would envision it...and it worked!
We can only hope he wises up for the next movies.
Big-battle space opera was GRAND for a way to kick off a new franchise, but repeat that five times and the franchise dies again.
It wouldn't take much for the newer Trek movies to appear "deep". He doesn't have to go TOO far to raise science fiction questions/ethical concerns, but if he ignores it again I could foresee friction.
Agree.
But at least he jump started the franchise rather well for the mainstream media.
He can go down the path of deep sequels now… since it seems Hollywood as a whole has learned how to do a proper Number 2.
Nerds, answer my question!
I used to love Star Wars as a kid. I had a ton of the books, played TIE Fighter and Dark Forces on my computer, dreamed about the prequels and all that. Then I grew up and later on I watched like half of the Phantom Menace and just recently saw most of Revenge of the Sith, and they were both BALLSACK. However, I am a little bit intrigued by the Clone Wars series. I like the caricatured look and I feel like being in pure CG rather than a bastardized mix of CG-plus-an-actor's-face-photoshopped-into-the-frame like the movies probably lowers the "Lucas Quotient," which I define as "the irresistible urge to jam as much moving crap as you possibly can into the picture to distract the audience from the travesty of acting and dialogue taking place." Also, as much as I grew bored of the whole epic storyline thing, I always liked the universe of Star Wars and it seems like a long episodic series probably has some neat, contained stories about weird and cool settings and characters?
Are any of my hopes realized in this series, or is it just as dumb as the Star Wars prequels?
It's easily the best mainstream Star Wars currently available outside of books or games.
And yes… the new trilogy blew chunks =\
Anyone lookin forward to the Star Wars MMO "The Old Republic"? Its a follow up to Knights of the Old Republic I & II. I'm super excited, it looks awesome.
We have a thread here in AP that needs love for that game.
Seriously, it's looking amazing and the lack of hype here is killing me.

I've been rereading the Hand of Thrawn duology recently. I'd forgotten how long Vision of the Future was, it's right up there with Star by Star as one of the longest of the novels I've read. It's pretty nostalgic; despite some silly moments, I did like the Galactic Civil War stories a fair bit.
Man, I haven't read an EU book since Betrayal and Bloodlines, which successfully managed to turn me off of the EU. Maybe over the summer I'll reread some of the other older books. It's been quite a while.
I am a little bit intrigued by the Clone Wars series.
I have to say I agree Clone wars is quite good, that's because it isn't written by Lucas but its needs more memorable characters to spice things up, and Ahsoka is little annoying at times. Recently I saw the finale(that had Chewbacca) and it was pretty damn dark and interesting and not the type of awful 'dark' like Revenge of the Sith but good 'dark' like Empire Strikes back.
Then I grew up and later on I watched like half of the Phantom Menace and just recently saw most of Revenge of the Sith, and they were both BALLSACK.
The prequels accomplished nothing story-wise, the story goal of telling how Darth Vader came to be could have been accomplished in like a short flashback montage recalled by Obi-wan in Return of the Jedi; it sure as hell didn't need three whole fucking films to explain that. If anything, how Vader became to be it is isn't as important as what came out of that: His redemption. Now Lucas could have made Anakin's fall good if he picked like a credible director or writer to help and assist him, similar to what he did with the original trilogy. Lucas alone with the camera, ends up feeling like an awful soap opera videogame crossover and barely a film.
, or is it just as dumb as the Star Wars prequels?
nah.
Damnit, this Tamson character is what Hodi should have been.
3D and Star Wars is a bad thing?
3D Revenge of the Sith is what i'm really looking forward too ALl those epic lightsaber battles in 3D, what more could you want?
Also for anyone watching the CLone Wars TV series
! Darth Maul is back.
3D and Star Wars is a bad thing?
Star Wars was never made for 3D. Usually, it sucks or it's not impressive at all when the movie wasn't intended from the start to have it. I have seen enough movies where 3D was just worthless and didn't make use of the potential this technique has. That's why the 3D in Avatar is marvelous while in movies like clash of the titans it's just a giant, expensive and pointless heap of trash. In Avatar, it was there from scratch, the movie was made and tailored to completely explore and embrace the possibilities of 3D (yes, I know the plot is copy of pocahantas, so shut up y'all)
Also, it's the first episode in movie theaters. Who the hell would pay to see that movie, and even worse, again, for those who have already seen it? I wouldn't watch episode 1 again when you cover all the expenses, like getting there, the 3D glasses, food and drinks and the ticket…
I dunno… Star Wars is, off the top of my head, a franchise that seems TAILOR made for 3D, even if it wasn't originally.
Just the cockpit scenes alone in every single movie would benefit from the technology if done right.

ROTS was made for 3D. The space battle at the very start, the lightsaber battles i.e Yoda - Sidious & Anakin - Obi Wan.
Thats gonna be epic.
Omg…
So true, I just saw ROTS on Blu Ray (@__@) and that space battle is just READY for some 3D.
Who cares about that boring ass Anakin ObiWan duel.
It's like 15 minutes of increasingly stupid locations of them just swinging at eachother and yelling bad dialouge.
I would like seeing the opening fight in 3D though as that mostly ruled.
When I first heard "star wars 3d" the first thing that came to my mind was the opening of A New Hope, with the star destroyed flowing overhead in glorious 3D. After that, I thought of all the wheeling space battles, in RotJ and the prequels. And, as I've said in other places, due to near-toxic levels of nostalgia, I can't bring myself to hate the prequel trilogy. I'll be seeing, and enjoying, all 6 of these movies.
I defintely agree. The fight was too coregraphed and not genuine. Darth Maul's fight was a lot cooler because Ray Park is truly a martial arts athlete. More importantly, the duel had not plot at all.
Wookiepedia says:
"According to Richard Marquand, George Lucas wanted this duel to be bigger than the Duel on Cloud City but changed his mind during the shooting, saying: "George is very blunt. He said, 'It's just a couple of guys banging sticks against each other. Don't worry about that. It is bigger because of what is going on in their heads. That is what makes it bigger.'"
Hoho. Lucas strikes back again. Look at 0:23 for the trailer.
!Also….
lol at 2:43.
I don't see why Vader won, except for nostalgia. I mean why not Palpatine? He's better IMO.
Probably cuz Vader did a LOT of the dirty work for Palpatine, which one can argue makes him a pawn but more people were terrorized in the SW Universe by Vader moreso than Palpatine, at least in their eyes.
This trailer almost makes me want to watch the prequels but I have already seen them( I think 3 is the worst).

He is some what more terrifying, but everyone knows that Palpatine is 1 of the greatest, if not greatest villians ever. THE Dark Lord of the Sith, the very embodiment of the Dark side, his genius, the way he manipulated the entire galaxy, the Jedi Order and then in fell swoop exterminated virtually every single Jedi & took control over the Galaxy…...
No one is comparable to him..
Start raging.
To be fair… the worst moment in Indy IV was Steven Spielberg's fault (lolol nukefridge).
And aliens are as far fetched as face melting boxes.
Darth Plagueis novel is out soon. Previews are looking very promising
and lo and behold….even midichlorians are finally explained in graeter detail as to what they actually are.......
I'm very tempted to buy this.....
For Christmas I got The Old Republic: Revan and Shadow Games. I'm the second part of Revan. It's pretty good so far. I just wish more of the crew would show up. I always get excited when they do appear. And so far, I think the book could use more pages. Sometimes I feel it goes too quickly. I'm so glad the book was written, though. Even since I played KOTOR I wanted a book about Revan. Though, I was thinking of something set before KOTOR, this is explaining things in the game.
Haven't started Shadow Games yet. I loved Michael Reaves Star Wars books so far, though, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
^ The Plagueis book is another one I've been hoping for for years. Too bad I probably can't get it right away.
I got The Essential Atlas for Christmas. I really enjoy reading it and seeing the effort that went into discussing the Galaxy's history and the logistical problems that you'd expect a galaxy-spanning civilization to have. I just wish they'd covered more planets in depth, even if they did already get most of the more important ones.
I'm on Hero's Trial in my effort to revisit the New Jedi Order series. I like this duology; it reminds me a lot of the two Han Solo trilogies. Lots of references to each, and to the Black Fleet Crisis, for some reason. But good god, even though there's a real-life precedent for this, the series would have been at least four books shorter if the government's collective heads weren't buried so deeply in the sand.
I always liked the NJO series. The Vong were intriguing and a breath of fresh air, and Nom Anor is just such a despicably loveable character. Main problem for me was the slightly underwhelming climax, and that the Vongs main tactic in war was "securing victory over a mountain of our own dead", as Shimmra succinctly put it.
That everything in the excellent Traitor novel was appearantly horribly distorted and retconned later is one of the main reasons I've never ventured beyond the NJO. Instead, my gase is now fixed on all things Thrawn…

SWTOR.com has these nifty timeline videos that explain quite a bit about Revan's past and some pre-KOTOR stuff (as do the comics)
You definitely need to see how the KOTOR chapter bookends in SWTOR.
S'all I'm saying ;D
I think my main issue with the Vong was that to me their equipment come off as pretty overpowered. Like, creating a bacteria that turns a jungle world's surface completely to sludge in maybe, what, a half-hour? Shattering an entire moon to the point of being able to create a ring around a planet with its debris? Producing black holes willy-nilly? Of course, I'm talking about a universe where a single missile is able to blow up a star, ships can fly across an entire galaxy in about a week, and lest I forget, laser beams that blow up planets wholesale, so perhaps I'm just being picky.
But, that said, I did like how the New Jedi Order did go out of its way to be different and its much larger and ambitious scope compared to some of the previous Expanded Universe books, though I can easily see why others would not like it, and it does have its own share of problems. In my eyes mainly some unnecessary, throwaway deaths of C-list characters and some small inconsistent hiccups in the narrative which is admittedly inevitable when you have a twenty-book series written by thirteen different authors.
Well, maybe my revisiting of this controversial series after all these years will result in a new prospective for me.
I think you are being a bit unfair to the Vong, Crossword.
Especially when technology in the Star Wars Universe has seemed to have plateau'd THOUSANDS upon thousands of years ago and the reason it seems technology takes a step back (if ever) is due to the constant Galactic war that engulfs multiple star systems. The Death Star has been preceded by COUNTLESS (and more powerful weapons) but that still didn't make it less scary. The fact that the Vong could do these things never seemed like "too much" for me within the scope of the established "technological advancements."
Hell, even in the Old Republic Era there's some amazing (and dangerous) technology being tossed around.
But I'm sure there's a good reason why no one would remember things from over 3,000 years ago…
and lo and behold….even midichlorians are finally explained in graeter detail as to what they actually are.......
Isn't this a reason to never pick it up.
Think it's time to let that one go…
It's canon - let's just move along with it.
I finished Revan today… Well, that ending was depressing >_> I guess it had to be for TOR...
@Monkey:

Not really.
Even from the first chapter of the book that is availble as preview on amazon, you can telll this is gonna be 1 amazing book.
I'm very very tempted to buy this, or maybe just a digital one for the moment - since i'm saving up every penny for a new comp & get me a copy of SW:TOR collectors edition….
try to catch up with STAR WAS THE CLONE WARS THAT ARE ON DEMAND.

Yeah let me take advice from you lol.
I thought the explanation they had settled on was ''midi-chlorians are attracted to beings strong in the Force and allow their power to be quantified,'' and not actually produce the Force, as it were.
I think explaining a mystic purposefully vague universal concept of spiritual power in any sort of way, let alone a scientific way is the very line where good writing becomes bad writing. Star Wars aside.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Which is another reason I ignore the EU stories. Because the Star Wars movies are, like virtually everything, better without every damn corner and rock turned over and looked into.

You actaully have a point here, the EU sorta takes away the wonder of Star Wars universe. But it does make it more bigger in scope I guess.
And some of them are better written then the films. Though personally I don't view them as ''canon'' at least to the films, they are canon to themselves.

Yeah let me take advice from you lol.
Well, that was awkward.
o.o'
Pleasure to meet you too though.

I thought so as well, but someone out there wasn't happy with that (and let's be honest 99.99% of the SW fandom wasn't happy with the idea to begin with) and decided to expand on it.
That being said, I'm legitimately interested in what they will add to the canon.

Yeah don't get me wrong here, I have indulged in the EU quite a bit, and from a young age at that. And there is definitely some cool stuff floating around in that vast realm (I fucking swear by that three part Cam Kennedy drawn Boba Fett comic book thing).
But when it comes to the real Star Wars experience? Sitting down with the films? Or really just 4-6? I try my damndest to forget and ignore literally everything about the EU. Because that's really how it's best and meant to be anyway.
No good sir…
This is depressing.

! Well, yeah.. It's ending leads up to that, Meetra's force ghost and Scourge's betrayal of the emperor.
! The ending just had no one winning besides the emperor so it could lead into TOR
