Actually, when Buggy first fought with Zoro, Zoro cut of Buggy's arm VERTICALLY what means that he could already do that. Besides, I really think it was the axe that made him split. He just won't die from a thing like that.
Anyway, I think buggy can split in all directions. Splitting his hands from is body is actually vertically too though it can be a matter in how the position of his hands are. But when he fought Luffy he could do it no matter how his hands were pointed

i mean he WAS limited into such panes which couldnt be more thin,and actually i thought he couldnt cut now one of these panes again vertically now…but as we saw in the newest chapter he is able to be cut in half vertically,maybe he can now also cut minor panes of himself into even smaller parts via a vertical split now------>improve of his DF..

??? i mean a vertical split at this part of his body would mean you begin to cut the middle of your middle finger straight to your elbow ..result would be an arm sliced in two pieces,like you would chop wood for your fire place..
you say you would cut it into panes and their it doesnt matter in which position the limb\arm is–-always a horizontal slice cause you wont get 2 pieces,,you will get panes
but maybe its just that he can only transform himself into horizontal panes and he can also survive every sword cut(that should be for sure :) even if its vertically)nothing more like i think he can do now,as an improvement of his DF and so he is actually able to be some1 at the GL
