I suck hard when it comes to science and math, but I'd like to think I have a pretty good grasp on the more artistic and creative "smarts", particularly writing stories (:lobolover:), which is pretty much my passion in life anyway.
Do you think you are smart?
-
-
I also fall into the spot where I don't see the point in math, which is obviously pretty damn stupid. I guess I'm too young to see the point of it. Sure, I use addition, subtraction, division and multiplication everyday… I use algebra like once a week... right now I'm taking geometry and next year I think Calculus or Algebra 2. Geometry is logic. I see that, but I just think it's really dumb. All those theorems and postulates seem like they will NEVER come in handy. Plus, who the hell writes out proofs nowadays? OH LOOK TWO LINES VERTICLE ANGLES ARE CONGRUENT AND THOSE TWO POINTS ARE EQUIDISTANT NOW LET ME RIGHT OUT A TEN STEP PROOF ABOUT HOW THE OTHER TWO ANGLES ARE RIGHT ANGLES

Yeah, geometric proofs seem pretty useless, but they're far from the pinnacle of what can be done with proofs. Take a linear algebra class to see what I'm talking about. Or better yet, don't, because it's stupidly hard and ruined my life for 3 months last year.

Not gonna lie, I'm that kid who got straight A's all throughout elementary and middle, who the teachers loved, who got into all the magnet schools, and who most of you probably hated. And no, I don't really recall having to work all that hard for it until highschool. Once I started the International Baccalaureate program, I was surrounded by people just as smart and often smarter than me so it was a pretty humbling experience. Since then, I've worked a lot harder at being likable than at being intelligent. Whether I'm smart or not at this point, I couldn't really tell you because I certainly don't see myself as smart.
My weakest subjects would have to be math and chemistry because they're composed of symbols and formulas that I can't really visualize in terms of what they physically mean. I know most people are happy to just memorize the stuff and spit it back out but I really hate not being able to understand concepts. My strongest subjects are probably English and the more artsy end of things in general. I can analyze literature and visual art better than most and I have a good sense of aesthetics.
But yeah, I'm probably more proud of being able to draw than I am of any of that.
-
just wait till you wanna apply to university. your grades might come back to haunt you.
I'm a junior in college.
So no, no they didn't. -
I've had people call me smart, but I've never thought much of it myself. I get good grades in school. It's mostly B's with some A's, and occasional C's. I got a D once, but never any F's.
I've often been told that I'm a great writer, which would probably make me the only one in my family, although I'm not sure about my dad. My sister, mom, and brother all fail at writing. Because of this, I've been thinking of one day getting a career as an author, but I'm still a high school student, so there's time for change.
I've always liked puzzles, riddles, and other things that have you use your brain, although I'm not the best at them. My mom's the opposite, so I obviously got this from my dad. I've always seen my dad as smart, and I got a lot skill-wise from him. So I guess I could be considered smart. I'm certainly not stupid.
-
I'm a genius now give me money.
-
Moria, if you haven't passed Algebra 2 yet you won't be ready for Calculus. Trust me.
@Deltron:
I honestly don't have a clue why logic is considered a math.
I know it can be shown through algebra-style formula, and it uses very concrete thinking, but it really seems ridiculous to have it be in the same field as every other math.It should be classified with whatever they class Public Speaking type classes in.
Well, the Logic class was taught by two professors. One from the Math department, and one from the Philosophy department. So we had both ends of the spectrum covered.
-
Moria, if you haven't passed Algebra 2 yet you won't be ready for Calculus. Trust me.
Oh well I guess I'm taking Algebra 2 next year and calc year after
-
i dont really know where i fit in really
i've always felt more naturally inclined towards math than art. I know I can draw ok right now, but alot of times I feel retarded at it. Sometimes I look back a picture and pick out something and think "how did I even do that? I don't remember thinking about putting it there!" and often times I dont. It just looked right at the time, so I cleaned it up and went with it. I'm a very emotion driven artist.
But math is easy. You know the formula, you know the answer. Easy! The trick is to understand how all the other crap you learned in the semester has built up to this particular equation. I remember my Junior year in high school, I actually gave up drawing in my algebra class and started taking notes and doing the homework, just for kicks. I actually had a 98.8 average that first half of the school year (which then dropped back down to 70 when i started goofing off again in the spring).
i'm happy though
-
I'd say I'm below average. I've gotten both "nah you're smart, girl!" and "lol you're not exactly the sharpest pen in the box" comments. I'm talented in certain areas, but I don't think I'm smart in the general sense.
Stuff like arts, English and Finnish mother tongue are my strongest talent traits. On the other end I lack tact, some common sense, debating skills and opinions. I believe I'm able to detect different types of humour and all, but if you ask me something like "whaddaya think about abortion?" I'll just shrug. Oh yeah, I also believe that I'm a good learner.
Talented, yeah. Smart, not really. And I'm more silly than I am dumb.
-
Oh well I guess I'm taking Algebra 2 next year and calc year after
Im taking alg.1
I hate math.. -.-
-
I never got higher than Algebra 2.
The only math I ever enjoyed at all (not counting the not-really-a-math Logic field) was Statistics.
Statistics is awesome.
-
I took Algebra II in 9th grade. Pre-Calc, Trig, and Calc followed after, but I opted not to take math my Senior year. I took Physics in 11th as well, which is primarily why I felt burnt out on math my senior year. I really regret it though, and wish I would have taken it all more seriously. Now I am going to go back to college for more Math, Physics, and English classes just for the hell of it. Well, not that Math and Physics won't help with programming, but outside of that it will all be recreational.
-
I'm always told I'm smart, by people besides my family who think I'm a dumb ass. I've gotten straight A's in 7th-8th grade although middle school was ridiculously easy. I'm taking Pre-Calculus as a Freshmen however so I think that's a plus. I'm getting all A's currently aside from Pre-Calculus which has a B.
Honestly I just think that I'm the only person who listens to the teacher and gets my work done. I don't think I'm smart, just that I listen and do what I'm told. My generation in my area though is kinda dumb though so…
Anyway compared to my family I'm an idiot though because my brothers have all done something memorable, especially my oldest brother who was a Valedictorian and went to college classes during his Sophomore year in high school. There's many other things he does but I don't wanna say.
-
I used to think I was unbelievably smart.
And then I went to college!
-
While american schoollife is MUCH different than this in middle-europe, (I don't know if it's easier or harder), I recognize myself in some of your sentences.
I'm definitely not super-smart. But the older I get, the more I get used to it. I'm 19 now and 10 years ago I've been very depressed because of my slower thinking.
Sometimes incredible logical things often don't make any sense for me for the first 10 seconds - which also goes for things people want from me. And you can unfortunately add, that I'm very clumsy and in weak moments a typical daydreamer.
BUT
I'm on the other hand good in paying attention and remembering the slightest things. Which means - when I learn things that I like, my brain has endless space for more. That's why I think I'm going to get very far in life. 8DIt's how to deal with my character, weak points, and mental strength. If I get along with that, I don't have any problem being slower than other people.
(I get headache from to much thinking lately D8)
-
Yeah, I'm smart, but about average. After years of dead-end jobs and dealing with rude/crazy customers and bosses, I'm finally just dedicated to getting an education. I get good grades but I'm emotionally and socially stunted, so it's not really a win/win.
-
I'm bout an average. That is all. I get good grades in some subjects and bad ones in some subjects, ehh.. Highest I've gone is like maximum 4 A's but usually it's 1 or 2.
I'm smarter in life experience and life knowledge than math, history, politics, religion, government, language, science/chemistry, well I consider myself so.
-
Nope, I consider myself average at best. I've been told otherwise, but that doesn't always really mean anything, especially on a global scale.
-
I just got my report card today
Algebra 1: A-
English 2: A-
Social Studies: B
Choir: A=] pretty happy.
-
Why do you only have four classes?
-
It might be half-year one schedule, rest-of-the-year another type deal.
And as for me, I've been called a certifiable genius, am in MENSA, but when it comes to book smarts, I can't keep focused for crap, which leads to such disasters as my Japanese final today. =_=
-
I don't think report cards show how smart you are. In HS my gpa was 0.001 that's only because I didn't give a shit and skipped school alot. I was usually a B/C average student.
-
Assuming you AREN'T exaggerating (which is borderline impossible)… What. How did you pass high school with a 0.001 GPA.
1. Did you drop out?
2. How did you have B's and C's yet a 0.001 GPA.Okay, well, obviously you are in exaggeration greatly... but in the small case that you aren't...
-

yep, I have 4 classes one half of the year and each class is twice the time length of a usual period.
-
Like inverted block scheduling… When I was in high school, we had A days and B days, each with four classes, ninety minutes long.
-

I dropped out of HS and went to nite school and got my HS diploma. I was speaking about when I actually cared about school I would get B's and C's my GPA around that time was of course higher than 0.001. Once I stopped caring about school and my grades and kept ditching school it dropped all the way down to 0.001. I hope I cleared this up.
-
Well, I'm sure there are people who have already taken them… and I know this question differs from school to school... but last year our school didn't take finals because of some fucked up district thing, so now I'm taking my first "official" final in Sophomore year. 6 finals in a few days... are they difficult in your experience? I'm just a bit worried. I have a feeling I'm worrying too much, but I just wanted someone else's experience. Sorry if this should be in help section, but it seemed fitting.
Any Tips to get prepared? I studied my mind out of the 2/4 subjects that I'm studying for over the weekend (two of the subjects are so mind-blowingly easy they don't even require any studying)... I looked over the 3rd subject... and the last subject which I haven't studied for I need an A on final to get an A on semester grade. It's a math class... I don't really know how to study for it though. I guess I'll just review the problems in book.
-
I honestly refused to do those tests since I believed that it was a mere game of memory. If you don't remember it than your dubbed to be an idiot by the school board and they'll assume that you didn't learn anything all year. All it is, is a big game of memory, if you can't remember something that your fucked unless you were never taught something than your extremly fucked but if you disagree with me and believe that numbers and grading systems prove that someones either smart or dumb than by all means study your ass off and get the highest score possible.
-

I was gonna take stats but they got rid of it
then I was gonna take AP stats and they got rid of that, too, at the last minute
fuckers tried to put me in AP calculus
to put my attention span and capabilities in math into perspective, I had a 75 at the end of precal and currently have a 102 in trig
Not gonna lie, I'm that kid who got straight A's all throughout elementary and middle, who the teachers loved, who got into all the magnet schools, and who most of you probably hated.
lol, no, I was that kid apart from one B in like 4th grade
minus the magnet schools
though once I hit middle school I started to get to know kids just as smart as/smarter than me
I liked it a lot more

with some honors classes somewhat and with most AP classes it's more about analysis and overall comprehension than memorizing useless data
I find the former to have more of a point and to be way easier
-
Haha yeah I definitely don't view myself as smart. Dropped out of highschool and have been doing nothing at home since.
I regret it alot though, so I'm going to get my ass into gear next year.
-

I'm a lazy person what can I say.
-
Let's see here, in school I was an B to B+ student, but I rarely ever did study and always left my homework to the night before. I think I'm some what smart, just very very lazy. In Uni im even lazier now, but I still pass all my units.
-
Haha. I was just looking at the "what are you reading" thread, and I remembered that my Senior year of High School (well, the first semester) I spent reading the Wheel of Time series on the floor of my AP classes. At my school the desks were arranged in lines that went diagonal to the room. Like this: \\ so I was able to sit on the floor without being seen by the teacher after she did called roll. I think I read books 1-8/9 in the first quarter of school (3 months). I still managed to get a B in both AP Economics and AP Government. shudders at memories of AP Government teacher and his sweaty habit of scratching his belly underneath his shirt where everyone could see
-
what is the difference between AP classes and normal classes? what does AP stand for?
-
At my school we had standard, Honors, and AP classes. There were only a few classes that offered AP material, but the major difference was that you could take a test after your AP class (for like $50) and (if you pass) you get college credits for the class. It was essentially a more strict version of Honors classes, which were the "advanced" curriculum. I only took Honors and AP classes throughout high school, so I cannot really say what the major difference was. Well, except for my Geometry class that I was put in by mistake – the kids in there were all dumbasses, so I just assumed that was a specific case. I hope. Actually though, now that I think about it, there was a lower tier at my school for the "special" kids. A few of my friends were actually in those; kids who are academically slower than normal or have special needs.

AP = Advanced Placement
