Actually, Naruto isn't very mainstream looking either really …
He sucks at his own style now though.

@Vongola_Boss_XI:
I would agree with that…ninjas / typical manga look etc. I don't think naruto is a bad manga, but I dont' think it's on the same level as One Piece.
We agree on something.
It's just more action packed and doesn't have 'weird' 'wack' (quoting my freinds) designs like One Piece does.
That's all there is to it.
Was talking about the art style.
Naruto doesn't have the mainstream look either.
I think there are a couple of reasons for Naruto's popularity in the states. First was advertising. There was lots of it back before Naruto premiered here. Then there was the allure of the foreign concept that seemed like it hadn't been done before even though it's been explored to hell and back (in this case, the concept was ninjas.)
It was a manga from Japan with obvious Japanese influences, which is a lot of what some manga fans want to see: something Japanese-influenced or Asian-influenced in general. One Piece doesn't really have that Japanese "feel" to it, so it turns some off, apparently.
It really doesn't, but it's closer to that style than One Piece is.
Naruto actually does have it's own style (although lately it's been slacking). But Kishi never really goes OUT THERE with his designs, so people who are close minded (the mainstream) usually just eat it right up, while ignoring One Piece because the designs are too OUT THERE.
Naruto's appeal is its 'trap card'. It boasts an overwhelming number of characters, readers are bound to connect with one of them. Of course, that is, until the trap card activates.

But when you think about it, there are some cartoon shows with wackier designs than One Piece.
Personally I think what hooks an audience towards the original books is an animated adaption. The One Piece anime had a chance, but we know what happened. The dub wasn't enough to hook the intended audience into a series worth further looking into. That's a different topic though. A dead topic.
But when you think about it, there are some cartoon shows with wackier designs than One Piece.
Yeah, but the mainstream who tend to watch anime are usually the kind who want it to be Dragonball Z 2.0.
They don't mind when it's something wacky like Loony Toons or Spongebob, but for a "fighting show" (as they would call it) like One Piece? It turns them off.

The only characters in Naruto who look OUT THERE with their designs have to be Kisame and Zetsu.
And even they have a sorta "badass" design to them…
I don't think Naruto has characters like Iva, Moria and that guy from Whitebeards crew who can take out mallets from his EFFING CHIN.

Americans need to learn One Piece is more than a fighting show.
If it was just fighting, it would be Bleach 2.0.
@robbybedfart:
Same reason Final Fantasy 7 is more popular than Final Fantasy 9, even though 9 is the far superior game.
wisest and most true thing I have read on the forum tonight.
Final Fantasy 9 is a gem probably my second favorite RPG after Grandia
I know this has nothing to do with this discussion but what the heck.
My two cents..
until next year happens we won't know how many volumes Viz plans to release.
I buy the magazine so I will remain as current as it gets…
which is probably Viz's real plan anyway since sales means money and unlike the volumes Shonen Jump produces Advertising revenue (more money!!)
Guys, Gekko runs Viz.
You'll get your One Piece manga when he sees fit. Perhaps a speed-up will be in order after indulging him in a large sum of money.
I do think that having the anime on tv helps the manga, but then.. What about other mangas that sell well in the US? I mean Rosario Vampire, black butler, heck even bakuman with just 1 volume and no anime on the US and they sell well, better than OP at least…
I'm gonna write a letter to Viz telling them to slow down on releasing OP just to piss Vongola off.

Just had to point out here that Grandia is the best game ever made by human hands. :D
I like this thread.
Despite the bad poster convention, some of you know a good game when you see it.

Indeed, I'm glad to see so many IX fans on arlong park forums. Between IX and One Piece, you know they've got some good taste in them… unless you're talking about Grandia, then I just look silly right now :P
Anyone get the October Jump yet? Any word on the number of One Piece chapters inside it?
You mean the October issue or the one that will come in the end of September? The october issue came like 2 weeks ago for most subscribers….next issue won't be out for like two more weeks....so I'm not sure which issue you're talking about.
The October issue (which comes in the end of August), came like 2 weeks ago and had chapters 561 - 564. The November issue (which comes in the end of September), most people will get around the 20th - 27th depending on where they live. That SHOULD contain 4 chapters as well.
The October issue was pretty good. I bet all the American Shonen Jump readers are going "WTF" at Whitebeard getting stabbed.
And Genkaku Picasso just seems plain fucking ridiculous.
At first, I didn't know if the main character was a boy or a girl until the chapter clarified it.
Then the main character and his friend die, then the girl prays to the gods(and Buddha) to bring the main character back to life, then the girl becomes his miniature guardian angel and tells him that if he doesn't help people(with his art), his arm will rot away and he'll lose his talent FOREVER.
Seriously, if I were that kid, I would have my right arm amputated and learn how to draw with my left hand.
Also, the girl calls Picasso a dumbass and Crocodile called WB a bastard.
I like how Viz is keeping in some swearing. Let's hope the soccer moms don't ruin it.
Has anyone gotten reprinted volumes 18, 19, 21, 22 with the new Baroque Works title arc on the side? Is there an online vendor I can order them specifically from? I've looked around a lot and haven't seen them at any bookstores, I was able to find 20 and 23 at a nearby Borders.
Yeah Genkaku PIcasso or whatever looks pretty bad…I couldn't really get past a couple pages. I looked it up though online. I'm pretty shocked Viz is even bothering with this series at all. It's only got 4 chapters total...and they're running it as a 3 part preview? =/
I thought they would've gone with something currently running like what they did w/ Toriko and Bakuman...like I haven't read it but Psyren would be a good example.
Oh and I'm just curious, what series would you like to see get the "Vizbig" treatment?
I mean I really like the Vizbig Vagabond volumes I've been collecting. Might be pretty cool to see Fullmetal Alchemist get a "Vizbig" edition since it'll hopefully have the final volumes out in English soon enough.
The only change I would make...hard cover. How would you all feel about this? Personally I feel if I'm going to re-collect any series it has to be totally worthwhile. One of the biggest problems for me w/ standard volumes is due to the cover you can't really open them to see double page spreads without bending...and this isn't fixed by vizbig. I would really like hard cover even if it costs a little bit more.
-hard cover
-color pages
-3 in 1
I would like to see Fullmetal Alchemist, 20th Century Boys, and One Piece released like this personally. =)
@Badass:

I don't exactly agree that Naruto's popularity is down to its supposed Japaneseiness.
Dragon Ball has about as much of a Japanese feeling as One Piece (not much on the surface) and it was more popular than God and sliced bread put together.

Haha, This post is really scary. All the volumes you listed where the ones I gotten in the reprint edition, besides volume 14 also. I ordered from rightstuff so I would say they probably only have the reprint versions now for those volumes. I asked if they could get me either all the original prints of 13-23 or the give them to me in all the reprinted versions, but in the end they ended up giving me all the originals except for volumes 14,18,19,20,and 21 they gave me reprints. Now my shelf looks totally wacked up.
And I got the October issue of Jump yesterday. I liked the Picasso thing, but I really think it is stupid how they are doing the 3 part preview. They are splitting up the first chapter of the book into three parts instead of just giving us a chapter each month. And I didn't find out till reading here but apparently the series is just one volume if I understand correctly? Well, even if it is, I still would have preferred it they just gave us the first chapter as a whole and nothing else, or split up the chapter into just a 2 issue preview. The excerpt they gave us seemed way to short and it sort of just felt just cut off at the end. And did anyone else notice the nipple mountains in the color spread? So know they can Viz allows cussing and nudity? Well I guess it's good to see them lightening up, I mean maybe now Claymore wouldn't be that out of the question to add.
And can't wait for next month where we get 2 color spreads. I just sucks we won't be getting the cool Strong World one along with chapter 0.

Holy shit, WHY ARE THEY EVEN BOTHERING.
It just screams "I'm gonna be canceled in ten more chapters."
No fucking wonder I never heard of it before.
Just look at their utterly pointless release of Gun Blaze West, a title that was canceled after a few months.
Next Month in Shonen Jump: Metallica Metalluca.
What is with these obscure mangas?
You know a manga's obscure when nobody has even bothered to give it a Wikipedia page. Maybe it's a pet project of somebody at Shueisha.
That seems to apply to Genkaku Picassemo as well as that Metallica Metalluca. Please tell me that's not the music based equivalent of Ultimo.
And Viz has spotlighted manga that were a couple of volumes or less before. What was the one that was like One Piece with cowboys? Something Gun Something West Something? It only had three or four volumes before it was cancelled, didn't it?
It would appear that King Calamari and I have similar ideas as to what constitutes mediocre.
My post was mostly sarcastic. Afaik, they aren't actually dropping that bomb on the US… yet.
US SJ was probably expecting a lot out of Watsuki, and was probably planning to jump onto whatever project he was doing next anyway.

I wasn't sure since I just glanced at the preview page. The only thing I remembered about it was that they had changed their approach to it; presumably because it's only a handful of comics now compared to the seven to ten that was in there at its height.
@dirt:

Maybe so. It's the second straight manga about an artist that they've previewed though and both featured art styles unlike anything else in the magazine. Maybe they're looking for something that would theoretically appeal to the female readers.
Isn't Metallica doing pretty bad in Japan? Viz should be adding something with staying power to the magazine like Bakuman, or Toriko, or heck, even Claymore, since it's already been featured.
looks up Metallica Metalluca on Google Images
Wow, it looks exactly like Hunter X Hunter, it's not even trying. Thank God it's doing poorly in Weekly Jump.
UPDATE: According to the TOC thread, Metallica Metalluca has ended after 17 chapters.
Hey Viz, what is your fucking problem? Why are you promoting series that are so obscure that they die in less than a year?
Not even 5 months actualy . I hoped it would use the imense potential it had but it was bland and never went anywhere . Well stil have chapters 12-17 to look forward to hope the scan group goes through with it .
Getting off the topic of bad manga decisions for a sec. How do you think Viz will handle the time skip? I mean will it just be like normal. cause we get 4 chaps every 4 weeks anyway. Or will they do something special like take a break and do a one shot, like Monsters or chapter zero? Or just keep chugging along?
Waitasecond : viz never published Chapter 0 till now ?
It's possible they could do chapter 0 in the magazine. After all, we did get one of the romance dawn pilots before the speed-up.
It depends if Viz wants to do a mini speed up next year after publishing all of the Marineford battle in the magazine. If Funi brings over Strong World they might publish Chapter 0 or get around to publishing Cross Epoch which they almost did once.
Why didn't they publish CE again ?
Back in 2007 Viz published a special issue of SJ dedicated to Dragon Ball, it was gone from the magazine at this point, and apparently they decided between either printing a chapter from Toriyama's Neko Majin Z series or Cross Epoch. They, of course went with Neko Majin Z.
That's kinda understandable, but still depressing. In all likelihood, we'll get chapter 0 far before we get Cross Epoch.
I want to see if Viz changes the manga with a subtitle if the anime does like they did with DBZ.
@Kairouseki:

Yu-Gi-Oh also did but more recently, Naruto didn't so it could go either way
They did it for Yu-Gi-Oh because they were releasing the story out of order.
