The could just have Robin say something like ''Aokiji the Blue Pheasant, Kizaru the Yellow Monkey, and Akainu the Red Dog'' during her little introduction of them. That'll cover the names just fine, methinks.
and then there's this beautiful option

@Mikey:
Actually, translating Sogeking to Sniperking LOSES the pun.
His name is Sogeking. You can't really translate it since it's a combination of words.
狙撃 そげき - Sogeki - sniping or shooting
キング - KingOda combined the Japanese word for sniping and the English word for king to make:
ソゲキング Sogeking. They should leave it as is since I know they are incapable of coming up with an equal pun in English. All they need to do is give it a foot note.
I was referring to AOKIJI'S name not having the handicap of being some untranslatable pun.
@Zach:
It makes me wonder how they'll translate the song…though I believe Sonny said that it'll be called Sogeking in the Funimation version. VIZ and FUNi should really start collaborating on vocabulary, people are gonna get confused.
This won't happen, just look at DBZ.
Aokiji's 'name' isn't used any differently than Sogeking. Both names sound equally awkward in English. To me it would be like translating Kurohige to Blackbeard but not translating Shirohige to Whitebeard (shouldn't it really be White Mustache:getlost:).
VIZ 'translates' Sogeking to help English readers understand, but leaves Aokiji alone? That really doesn't make much sense. Aokiji doesn't even have any sort of pun to try to keep. It's as straight forward as a translation can be. Blue Pheasant.
Sniperking doesn't sound awkward whatsoever (it's the same exact syllable count as Sogeking for god sakes, don't bullshit me)
Blue Pheasant does.
It gets no more complex then this.
The only thing I would worry about with VIZ using Aokiji and not translating it is that they might miss or skip over Aokiji's real name entirely.
Even so, Aokiji is STILL FINE.
Oh yeah, they need to do what Crossword suggested. Make us, or rather them aware of the name's meaning. Then use it casually liek Aokiji for the rest. Maybe in more formal sentences and conversations "Blue Pheasant" can come up.

Ooooh, where did Sonny say this?
I like that XD
Almost like how they did it with kami. Except, that would be much more tolerable, and not some eggshell dance around calling Eneru a god.
Ooooh, where did Sonny say this?
I like that XD
I believe in the Season 2, Fifth Voyage commentary.

Didn't they call him Sogeking in Unlimited Adventure?
Yeah, but then they also used Gear Second.
They used Alabaster too, didn't they? And they didn't even translate giraffe…

I'm not trying to bullshit you. I said that SOGEKING sounds just as odd in English as Aokiji. Sniperking sounds fine. I really don't think that Blue Pheasant is anymore awkward to read for an English speaker than Aokiji, but to each his own I suppose. Once again I ask if you are going to translate one name why not translate the other? Don't get me wrong I like the way that Aokiji sounds, but wouldn't you rather have it translated for consistencies sake?
I certainly would like to know the criterion that VIZ uses when deciding what names to translate and what names to leave alone. It all seems very random to me.
Thanks J-sack for the Rokushiki translation. I always kind of liked "The Six Styles". It rolls off of the tongue with sweet alliteration.
I really don't think that Blue Pheasant is anymore awkward to read for an English speaker than Aokiji,
Count the syllables. It's even just one word, and sounds like a name to American ears. It's in virtually every way less awkward.

Who does things entirely for consistency?
Do you have OCD or something?

I've repeated the same possible reasoning to you like twice.
@Tupac's:

Who gives a damn how many syllables are in the name?
Did I say I wanted Tupac's Ghost's POSSIBLE reasoning for VIZ' shenanigans? No, I didn't. I said I wanted the EXACT criterion for how VIZ (not Tupac's Ghost) decided what to translate and what not to.
Leaving Aokiji untranslated in my opinion is the wrong move. When a Japanese child (or someone equally familiar with the Japanese language) reads Aokiji they get the image of a blue bird. When a random American kid reads Aokiji he thinks "That's an unusual name", because to him it's a meaningless word. It really needs to be translated. So you get the proper imagery that the author was trying to convey. Crosswords' solution works, but I would still rather see an actual translation every time the word Aokiji pops up.
I think I would choose to have something done right over less awkward any day. Maybe that's just me.
Translated names or not, it's not going to be completely perfect since it's a translation from one completely different language to another.
For example, in colorspreads, romaji for "Kaizoku," "Mugiwara," etc. are still there in the Viz version.
It seems stores got the April issue in early, every store I went to that carries the magazine had it.
I learned something from it. When a topless man gets turned into a woman, they magically grow a tank-top.

Well just be glad it won't appear in the volume

That is such a useless edit. The character is already covering up the 'naughty' bits. Censorship is… ugh. I'm not even going to bother.
@The:
"Do it with a BOOM."
What's wrong with that line?
Nothing. And I haven't seen anyone complain about it either.
On the whole "Sniperking"-issue… I think it's perfectly fine. Like I've said before, whether they translate that name or not, I think both options are perfectly justified. Sogeking is acceptable because it's the spelling Oda went with, Sniperking is acceptable because it's easier to understand for an English-speaking audience.

No Aokiji is his name (Well, codename). It just also happens to have the double meaning of Blue Pheasant. Inazuma means lightning bolt. Do you also want his name translated as well? These sort of Japanese puns and quirks, are what the point of a glossary is for.
Aokiji would make readers confused. Bluepheasant would make readers confused, too. Mainly because a lot of people don't know what the hell a Pheasant is.
that's funny because my friends would go pheasant hunting every year so I thought everyone knew what a pheasant was
I hate the practice of dumbing thing down for people, because they believe people are too stupid to understand.
I didn't know 'Ao Kiji' meant blue pheasant in Japanese before seeing One Piece, but I do now.
If people don't know what a pheasant is, they can look it up, same as everyone else.
If everything is dumbed down, how is anyone going to learn anything?
This is not really a rant at Viz, but at society in general.
Who the hell doesn't know what a pheasant is?
I just realized that Pheasant is a bird. Knowing that, wow Oda is weird. He names the other two Yellow Monkey and Red Dog two vague names for their species and then Pheasant a very suspecting name.
Blue Bird
Yellow Monkey
Red Dog
Sound like code names a army would give to officers. Though if they changed Yellow Monkey which is a mouthful to something like Yellow Chimp.
I really like the sound of "Red Dog", very army.
These aren't names I'd imidantly be like oh hey their named that, but I would easily recognize them as code names.
On the Sniper King, what is the pun with SogeKing? As far as I know Soge without the other part is gibberish. Is it Sogeki sniper or something? Sniper King works fine complete, it does kind of sound like a GI Joe villain.
With A Don makes no sense… ever. With a Boom (which I am assuming that what Don translate to or something similar) makes complete sense with me.

I'm guessing you've never heard of Momotaro.

Pretty much.

With a Don would have made sense if Viz had been using the correct SFX. Since they haven't, boom is probably about as good as it can be.
At least it's not DOOM anyway.

'Sogeki' is Japanese for 'sniper'.
So its sogeki king, shortened to Sogeking.
Its quite a lame pun, but then its supposed to be something Usopp thought up at at the spur of the moment.

What's wrong with that line?
Nothing. But that line and the "six styles" will be this arcs hot topic for weaboos to cry over.
This is the first I've heard of this but it seems Viz was going to accept fanart for the SBS header to replace the ones fans did in the Japanese version. Apparently the plan was scrapped but Speedking over at Deviantart uploaded some of his designs.

Hehe those are neat.
Hm, that's quite a shame. I guess they'll still be using the Japanese ones or something.
Hm, wonder if they'll keep the Movie 10 interview stuff from one of the recent volumes. I kinda doubt it personally, but they did keep in a question relating to Movie 3, so here's hoping.
Wait you mean the headers for SBS aren't done by Oda? Seriously? Damn. For some reason that's disappointing to me. I am happy that Viz is using the originals though.

Really? Are you sure? The SBS headers look professionally drawn by Oda himself.

Oda has always done the SBS headers. It's just that in recent volumes he's allowed fans to submit their own.
The stores in my area got this month's volumes early, so I got volume 34. As far as the Admirals go, when it lists their names, it's Aokiji, Akainu, and Kizaru, with an editor's note translating them below the panel. (I don't mind it, personally; Sniper King works as it has the same number of syllables, but out of the Admiral's names, only Aokiji (3 whether it's Aokiji or Blue Pheasant) has the same number - Akainu (3 vs. "Red Dog" - 2) and Kizaru (3 vs. "Yellow Monkey" - 4) wouldn't work from a dubbing perspective, and they need to be consistent.
Also, some of the names are Kokoro, Chimney, Gonbe, Kalifa, Sodomu, Gomora (don't remember those two exactly, as I only briefly looked through volume 38, but I know they didn't translate the names of the cities), Lucci, Kaku, Paulie, Iceberg, and That Pigeon… I mean, Hattori.
My local bookstore says they got all the new speed-up volumes in stock, so I'm off to go pick 'em up~!

So the only "changes" are Sodomu and Iceberg? Cool.
I should be getting my volumes soon, or so I hope.
Wow they did manage to get around the Sodom & Gomorah reference after all & still make it work :)
About DOOM, I'm not exactly sure how you're supposed to pronounce it. The katakana is ドーン so I'm thinking that Viz's effect isn't supposed to be pronounced like it has a u in it but rather with a long o sound which would fit perfectly with the original.
I hope they don't go and use "With a DOOM!" but the sound effect works still. "With a BOOM!" doesn't really sound right. They shouldn't try a direct translation for that I think.
What are you talking about? "Do it with a BOOM!" Sounds perfect.
I'm guessing they use DOOM as in DO-O-M, like the long "DON"s Oda uses. Otherwise "DUM" is really weird.
Pretty sure boom is pronounced like … boom.
As don is a sound effect that Oda likes to use, it makes sense that they translated it into boom.
Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Besides things like Kami, I've been mostly impressed with what VIZ has been doing so far.
Oda has always done the SBS headers. It's just that in recent volumes he's allowed fans to submit their own.
I believe he allows them to submit their own and he redraws it, or at least that's what I remember reading in the translated SBS people have done.
No, its totally done by the fans. The header varies for each SBS pages in the volume (Oda usually use one header he had drawn or each of SBS pages on the volume). Each one of those headers have their own art style so I doubt Oda redraws it.
Are the SBS headers online somewhere so we can see these changes?
@Mikey:

Oda wrote them in romaji. Viz didn't touch the text in color-spreads unless it was for the chapter number-title, I believe.

I think this dude here actually had an SBS overall in one of the volumes.
So Oda does draw them! Hooray I'm happy again!
