I honestly never caught it once while it was airing at that God forsaken time slot. And I don't think they were doing it any favors either personally. Am I gonna worry about it? Feck no! One piece is still going strong as ever, and doesn't show any sign of slowing it's momentum (especially in the states).

Actually no, the Toonami staff have said multiple times that they've had to push to keep One Piece on air. The show has done awful in the ratings especially with the terrible Thriller Bark arc. This was a decision that they HAD to make, made no sense to keep an endless show on air when it doesn't perform well. I hope people understand that OP just isn't popular in the West, very niche following but that's it, never had that mainstream presence. I remember there was that guy in the Film Gold thread worried about OP's popularity where and everyone told him it was fine but his assertions were correct. Keep in mind that the show has been on for FOUR years and was given earlier timeslots including 8:30PM, so can't say they didn't give it a chance.

I Don't think anybody thinks that taking One Piece off of Toonami is hurting One Piece's popularity in America, at least I hope not. Airing once a week in the dead of night isn't really doing it any more favors than not airing at all. Once FUNimation started streaming dubbed episodes in HD on their site, the Toonami airing was just something nice too look forward to every week, at least for me.

Okay first please define or expand upon "isn't popular in the West" in the spectrum of what IS popular within the anime niche. I've always seen the pecking order as this:
1. Pokemon
2. Dragon Ball Z
3. Yu-Gi- Oh
4. Naruto Shippuden
5. Studio Ghibli
6. Sword Art Online
7. One Punch Man
8. Attack on Titan
9. Robotech/Voltron
10. Studio Gainax and Trigger stuff
11. Full Metal Alchemist
12. BleachOne Piece was always in a weird place where it was never going to be as popular as these top 12 but it's etched out this comfortable niche for itself where it was still as relevant in the overall Western anime community. I don't think stuff like Film Gold screenings and Bandai Namco continuing to put out games would happen if this show had no presence in the West whatsoever.
I also ask for clarification on what specific post in the Film Gold thread you're citing so I can know exactly what these assertions were. I'm not saying I want One Piece to have things it hasn't truly earned but it also feels a little bit like your post is seeing One Piece's presence in the West more negatively than it actually is.

I meant not popular in the West in terms of mainstream appeal here. Film Gold screenings and Bamco games being released here are meaningless, there have been a bunch of other movies put out by FUNimation/Viz/Aniplex for limited screenings and niche anime like Berserk, Fate and Saint Seiya getting games localized too. The only readon why I come across as negative is because I often see OP fans being in denial of the series popularity outside of Japan. Many people don't realize this because they only associate with other people who are aware of the series online or so. Me saying OP is popular in the US because a lot of ppl online talk about it would be like me saying everyone hates Donald Trunp because I live in a very liberal city. As for the guy in the Film Gold thread it was nothing significant I just remember there was a guy fretting over OP's popularity and everyone giving him shit for worrying. But yes, OP is popular in the West to an extent but not quite there with a lot of the mainstream shows. I just don't think new shows such as AoT, SAO and OPM etc; should quickly be overtaking a series like this. We can keep saying "it's fine" and shrugging everything off but I feel like the series is underperforming here for being the most popular anine ever in Japan.

It's a damn shame. The writing's been on the wall for a while and it was getting close to the end of its four-year contract, so I can understand why now was the right time to cut One Piece loss.

The overarching plot is too dense and interlocked by this point in the series. If someone jumps in right there, they would be completely lost and swamped with pre-established details and references.

Even if Toei tried to recap the entire pre-timeskip portion into one episode, there's no plausible way to recap it that will leave new viewers satisfied.

Why would that help matters any [emoji23]. I'm curious why you think missing 500 episodes of plot would help matters any?
DBZ only got away with it because of the difficulty of licensing the first half of Dragonball anyway.

I know at the end of the day the episode count would still be high, but it wouldn't seem as daunting. I know it sounds stupid, but you have to admit that if someone sees that a show has over 700 episodes (heck it'll be 1000 in a couple years) they would most likely not even bother. I know people that don't watch One Piece because of that. It's their loss, but a new show starting at episode 1 would at least make people give it a chance.

I'm sad to discover Toonami is cancelling One Piece, but at the same time… They ARE hitting the point where the pacing becomes unbearable... I've stopped regularly watching the anime midway through Fishman Island, and if it weren't for One Pace I wouldn't be watching it at all from this point.
The show was already on shaky ground when it comes to Americans' interest in it... the horrid pacing of Thriller Bark on was never going to help that any.

To be fair, this ALL sounds like a Toei issue.
Sounds more like an issue with Toonami not wanting to pay for a series that despite being cheap to air, wasn't pulling in enough ratings meaning that it was not making them the profit that they wanted. They weren't losing money because of it, they just weren't making that much ad revenue off of it. It's all about money and it just seems like the show didn't make them a significant profit so they just decided to use the money for other things that would do better for them. They also had to give a portion of the ad revenue to FUNi so there's that too

To add insult to injury, HULU is now dropping One Piece as well (well technically, they're dropping every Toei anime they have - citing they're expired).
So yeah. No One Piece on tv. No One Piece on the two mainstream streaming sites (HULU and Netflix). Geez… now all we got are the niche anime streaming sites and the DVDs. No matter how you wanna look at it, this does not bode well for the series appeal in the US. Looks like the various companies who had a hand on the series are starting to give up on it, unfortunately.

Remember they removed all of their shows on Hulu not just One Piece. Clearly they are working on something.

The reason they removed it was because the lisence expired and either HULU or Toei didn't want to renew it.
I'm hoping Netflix picks it up, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one. As it stands now, OP has no representation on any mainstream platform and that sucks. Hopefully that changes, but I dunno.

I dunno. Toei has proven themselves to be incompetent. I'd sooner believe they just forgot they're various lisences were set to expire on HULU.
At this point I'm not sure any company would want One Piece. It hasn't really proven itself to be a hit here. Quite the opposite, actually.

Its not as big as dbz and Naruto, but its definitely a big hit.
81+ volumes released, 516+ episodes dubbed and It's one of the most watched shows on Funimation and crunchyroll. The only place that One Piece had not found success here is TV, due to different reasons.

It's seems to do fine for FUNi since it is 500+ episodes in. Can't deny that.
But as far as mainstream appeal, it doesn't have that much. It keeps being dropped from mainstream outlets.
Jason Demarco, the head of Toonami, stated on his twitter that OP just isn't popular enough in America and that that's the hard truth. Which is why I don't believe any mainstream outlet would be interested in airing/streaming it. It's had many chances but it just hasn't caught on with the casual viewers.
But in the end, it does well enough for FUNi, sales wise, so at least we'll have the DVDs… unless Toei does something stupid, which is entirely possible.
Still, all in all, it's a shame. I feel if it caught on with the casuals, we'd have more perks when it comes to the dub... like a simidub of the recent episodes.

Honestly I think for both formats fans are assuming the worst and not considering the bigger picture.
One of the things that makes Toonami work is their ability to rotate several anime series throughout the year. They wrote themselves into a corner when they had multiple long runners on the block at once. Since most of the other shows have more established popularity it made sense that One Piece would be the one to go, now that puts Shippuden in the "death slot" position.With Hulu they're removing SEVERAL Toei titles including the Dragonball franchise and the newer Digimon Tri movies (Sailor Moon seems to be unaffected but I also noticed Viz is no longer adding the newer season dubbed on the site).

If you know the basic idea of the main characters, sure, you can jump in and get what's going on (especially due to flashbacks and yell/explaining what's happening all the time)
But if you're a brand new viewer and you jump in at Water 7, you won't get the emotional depth of the scenes, and probably won't get "hooked", which is the problem -

Honestly, I think OP has had plenty of chances of finding a mainstream audience. More so than many other shows. I think it's time to give up on it ever finding appeal with the casuals. America just isn't that into it. Hopefully the dub is able to sustain itself. That's all I ask for… that it's popularity doesn't hit rock bottom so FUNi doesn't discontinue the dub. I think we'll be fine in that regard, at least.

I mean does it even need to have a tv slot anyway? The series seems to do just fine as it is. Hell we even made it to the time skip!! There's no way that could be possible,and no way Funimation would throw away so much money at something that "isn't working".
