I had an idea that I think would be really cool but sadly doubt will happen: The tournament has some kind of limit on how many rounds each fighter can participate in. If Goku and Vegeta can only do a couple fights it gives the other characters more relevance since Goku/Vegeta need to be saved for fighting the most powerful opponents.
Krillin/C17/C18/Tenshinhan/Roshi and to a lesser extent Gohan/Piccolo/Buu would have a lot more ridding on their performance if they don't have the "Goku can take over for me when I lose" safety net.

I would love that so much. All I know is that they can't have one-on-one fights for every single round for all ten members. That's absurd. I feel like there are bound to be free for alls just so the ret of Team Universe 7 besides the Saiyans can look cool by beating up generic mooks, but I'm actually hoping team 2v2 or even 3v3 battles if 1v1s take up too much time.

I'm waiting for development on that part. It's a delibrate flaw and I love Goku despite that, but I feel like it's gotta be addressed at some point.
Also, place your bets: is the red super saiyan thing Kaioken, some form of Super Saiyan God or some modification? I think all are possible.
I'm placing my bet on either Super Saiyan God or a new transformation because looking closer he looks like he has a different aura than Kaioken and a different transformation because it looks like his eyes seem to have a slightly different design; it has a different hue of red.
There's a lot of discussion this is generating and it's a lot of fun.

Pretty much. Originally I just saw him as dumb and a bit selfish but this is beyond that. It went past Gon/Gin and Yusuke levels of selfish.
At any rate this made me like cannon Vegeta not just Abridged Vegeta. At any rate I hope Goku loses his round and Gohan or anyone else makes up for it.

Why not bet on character development (which some sort of wake-up call could provide)? That would be the best option in my eyes.
Make Goku getting absorbed into fighting "too much" and make it have negative consequences, but then this is also Dragon Ball.
Maybe the recent character focus stuff has given me more hope, but I still consider that this is Dragon Ball and I don't expect 10/10 writing out of it.

It's still interesting to have a different take on Dragon Ball Super. It's not anything like the Big Green dub, Goku and Beerus are average (some stuff laughable like the YATATATATATA!) but I think other characters such as Krillin are fantastic.
This is one hell of a year for Dragon Ball and English dubs:

Anyone that thinks GT was good is remembering about 4 episodes out of the 52 and blocking out the rest. I say this as someone that'll regularly defend GT's good points.
Anyone that thinks Dragonball should stop being fun and character based and just have some more badass fighting is missing out on what actually made Dragonball good and probably thinks the Android Saga was the best part of the series.
I was gonna argue with you but the Android saga and everything involving Future trunks is my favorite stuff in the series so I guess you're 100% right

Gohan, for all extents and purposes, is living the dream - he's incredibly smart (easily the smartest in the Son family), has a worthy job as a professor's assistant (atm), has a loving wife and child AND is stronger than 95% of the planet. I'd take his life over Goku's any day of the week. Krillin's too.

I blame the expectations of him being the "protagonist" to the dbz artificial division. If z had started where it made more sense, in the timeskip just before that one, when adult goku was revealed, or even better, never had existed, then gohan would be measured by his failures like the rest of the fighters that aren't goku.
I don't get that, is like "we got to the 20th manga volume and the 4th timeskip time to rename the series to make it FRESH"

Yeah, to the likes of Goku and Vegeta its disappointing, but he can still fly/have super strength. Still a sweet deal imo.

Looking it up, apparently Toriyama's editor felt that the anime of the original was declining in popularity, thanks to the producer porting over the same "cutesy" image from Dr. Slump. The decision to start "over" was purely for $$$, and Viz labeled the corresponding section as Z to make it pop with American fans.
Why that certain point? Can't be because of tone, as Piccolo Daimao started that by his men offing Krillin. My guess is that 5 years was the longest in-universe skip at that time, and the introduction of Raditz and Saiyans elevated Dragon Ball from martial arts fantasy to martial arts sci-fi.

"I was dead when Goten was born!" <- look at this asshole over here, thinking he's in the abridged series. Seriously, when Vegeta's the one being the adult in the room… They really need to take that button away from Goku. Every time I'll watch that hype opening in the future I'm going to be thinking that with every punch and kick he lands on the superhero alien and the bara-wolf that a million more were just condemned to die. If he calls that new transformation that's hinted at, probably a perfected version of the Super Saiyan Blue/Kaioken stack, Super Saiyan Black some eyebrows are going to be raised.
On a lighter note the ending sequence is a lot more charming now, and while Gohan and 17 are likely safe from jobbing for the time being please don't repeat the mistake of the Universe 6 tournament and let everyone on the team have a moment and contribute something, even if it's just beating up on the other universes' Krillin-tier dudes.

The possibilities with Goku are really interesting, but above all I really really wish Goku's flaws would actually be developed instead of just being pushed aside. It's clear this is intentional to me, but it will become really bad writing if nothing's done with it.
I still count the Piccolo fight a contribution because he would've won if it hadn't been for Frost cheating. That was a smart fight on Piccolo's part.
But yeah, I really do want a legitimate fight for everyone, even if some are tag team fights or something (because there IS 10 fighters - to give everyone a proper fight would take 10 episodes - hell, I'd even be okay with that if they're all well-written and exciting fights).
