grimjow-ive actualy seen dozens of people on the NF "OP vs. Naruto" thread say how "gay it is" (calling Naruto a masterpiece in the process),and dozens of them saying how "tried to get into it,but it was just too stupid/the art was realy horrible".
One Piece Overrated?
-
-
@Sandai:
Every manga has it's boring points even One Piece.
Yes but One Piece is more and more better whereas Naruto (for example) was better at the beginning but is becoming more and more boring.
Well, it's just my opinion. ^^ -
I dunno… I never have been bored of One Piece, except Skypea (forest session). Maybe it depends what people look for. One Piece just gives me that sense of adventure I always crave for. Fights and villans are just sprinkles on the cake.
-
Overrated on this forum at least. Don't get me wrong, I too think it's the BEST ANIME EVAH, but many people here seem to also consider it so awesome that nothing else is even watchable. That's pretty damn overrated if you ask me. I can't think of a single show that hasn't been called crap at some point here. I mean, I didn't reallly like Shaman King, (the anime) but the fact that we have a thread called "So, they're actually going to make Shaman King not awful", to me seems a bit extreme…
-
That relates to the manga which as every one knows wasn't given a clean finish.
-
Vegard-considering the tournament winner stuff was never resolved and THIS was the LAST PAGE
I honestly can SEE why they think it was an awfull ending.
-
-
I wish people would stop feeling this irresistible urge to compare Naruto to One Piece every time a topic like this comes up.
It's like comparing apples to ducks.
-
It helps them vent their frustrations over the fact that most of the world likes Naruto over One Piece using characters, story, etc as their reasons.
-
Don't misunderstand me, I like Naruto too. ^^
It's just that it's a little irritating when I hear/read people (not here, of course^^) say that Naruto is better than One Piece because "One Piece's drawings suck" or reasons like that. Just because of that, they don't want to read One Piece but if they had read it, they would know that the drawings are constantly becoming better and now they're pretty good.
Well, in fact, what I wanted to say is that there are mangas that are overrated (Naruto) but not One Piece. The truth is that I'm on this forum because there's not even a french forum about One Piece which is lively enough so I think it's underrated in France at least (anyway, it's not my problem whether it's underrated or not in the USA or other countries). ^^ -
It IS underrated in France.
Most of the people I know that have read/tried reading OP think it's an awful series because of the artstyle. "lol OP sucks the artstyle is ugly just look at their faces"… Am I really the only person that find the art in OP inspiring? It's truly the thing that made me want to do something new when it comes to creating characters... now whenever I read something else I find the character design boring, or I feel I've seen it a billion time. Not saying OP has an amazing art and that all the others should go hide in shame, that'd be pushing things too far. In the first volumes the art itself wasn't extraordinary, just original. But now... it's getting better and better. Some backgrounds in Thriller Bark were just amazing (...okay, maybe it was an assistant who drew that. But still. XD).
The thing is, people tend to give up reading because of the drawings without paying attention to the story. Because I seriously can't see HOW someone can not like it. I never grew tired of it, even at points people tend to call dull like Skypiea...
Anyway. I don't think there are many french OP fans (I heard it sells quite well, but there aren't so many people that actually enjoy it as much as I do). I only knew one before coming here. Actually it might even be "EUROPEAN OP fans", when I see OP: Unlimited Adventure doesn't even have a release date here...
I don't know about the USA though. -
well,europe,definitely-in germany, where its a big hit, they stil made it into a complete dish of shit now,ive watched parts of the spanish/catalanian dubs, which had simply HORRIBLE voicing, with most voices being theese high pitch eunuch noises, presented without any frickin' emotion, etc. And ,I mean, the greek version, where they renamed Luffy into Drake and where "ONE PIECE" was changed to the ultra gay “Dreik and the Hunting of The Treasure" (ive forgoten the changes of the strawhat pirates name, but they were HORRIBLE)-(plus look at THIS
)How can something with this opening be NOT underrated?
-
(plus look at THIS
)How can something with this opening be NOT underrated?
Wow, I never thought it was possible to make We Are suck. Suddenly, I almost feel relieved that One Piece doesn't air in Norway…
-
@ Lobolover
someon on youtubex
The Greek dubbers did an awesome job they didnt destroy one piece with their dub 5/5y
(1 month ago)Yeah!!!
I was excited when i heard it.
I am glad it turned out good^^i edited the names lol
-
What the-
It doesn't even sound a single bit like "We Are"
And "Drake"?!?
No wonder it's underrated, indeed…Now I'm glad in France they chose to keep the japanese opening... (whether it be the old or the new dub)
Even though there were still changes in the manga that make my hair stand on the back of my neck.
I mean, when a character is named "Pipo", I can get why so many people hate him (Poor Usopp already had a "special" charadesign... well they ruined his name too). And the french version of "Sogeking" is just... meh ("roi Dutir"... ... ... doesn't sound good to me). Did they really have to translate it? Couldn't they just put a note explaining the pun?
Sanji being called Sandy too. Isn't it a girl's name?!? X__X
Zoro got a second "R" (in case we were too stupid to see the reference to Zorro I guess)
The rest isn't too bad. Most of the names are the same as in english, or close because of the l/r thing in japanese (Enel being called Ener for example)
But yeah. Details like that can kill the popularity a manga has... -
btw,if Luffy is named Drake in the greek dub, how the hell are they gonna name the real Drake when (if) they get there?Luffy? xDD
oh,to be on topic I have to say that I find that the most ppl are right and OP just doesn´t have such a huge fanbase here….so yeah, it´s underrated ....
and I personally like Naruto, Bleach and other mangas too - but i still like OP and it´s art ;-) -
Oh,they called Zoro Black Lash or something.
Anyway,I just have to say that it is EXTREMELY underated in the Czech republic. There are only a few fansites, with all the general "acknowledged" manga sites
not even mentioning it.Also, the fansites have either mistakes (saying Gold Roger was executed 40 years ago),horrible translations ("Fish Guys" is the closest english equivalent of "Rybák"-their version of "Fish Men") and-on a site, instead of all the badass stuff from the first 250 episodes, they had a pic of Sanji kicking the sea horse in the memory loss filler arc /which I like, but I think there are tons of things/scenes that would be beter. And now a game site had the "OP hentai quiz" ,where an editor called OP an unknown HENTAI in the intro, advising people to randomly choose answers and calling the questions "Nothing much."-I think I win.

Is One Piece overrated? Yes. It has terrible pacing, poor plot development, and the characters are stale stereotypes that take forever to show any signs of development as well. The longevity of the series has only benefited me in that OP gave me a story that didn't end in 24 chapters like a lot of anime does.
The story being told is taking far too long to complete. Plot points from arcs early on in the story gain a little relevance way later on in the story. Delightful surprises no doubt, but shitty storytelling.
I still like OP and will talk about it and speculate, but I am by no means, a hardcore fan that froths at the mouth for whatever Oda's willing to draw each week.
-
okay-I didn't see any Mary Sue's in the crew.And-terible pacing?Do you know how much even hapens in a chapter?(not too serious question)
-

There's no way you could've possibly had mistaken One Piece for Naruto.

Not all animes end in 24 episodes.

Out of curiosity The main story or the current story arc?
-
and what story progress towards Naruto becoming hogake did we get in 400 chapters?
-
Same said for Luffy becoming Pirate King we don't know (how close).

I hope and pray that you were joking… Otherwise. I'll fill your life with misery and woe, AND NO, IT WONT be by making you watch one piece. As for you sandai, we know exactly how close luffy is. He needs to reach Raftel and he is at new world's entrance, so he is halfway there.
-

I meant specifically, being halfway there still doesn't fully answer the question of how close Luffy is to One Piece and how close the series is to it's conclusion.
-
Well,we DO see progress at least (being on the halfway point, gathering Nakama, the "aura" thing) .
-
Yesterday, a friend of mine (that i consider that has very good taste) told me that one piece is overated, he gave me a heart attack, and mostly cuz i was happy for chapter 500.
But maybe he said that coz he just watch the anime (that is poorly draw) and all the censor, mexico sucks >=(
sanji has a lollypop, they drink orange juice, there's no blood, and cut so many pieces.
ah, and the last episode that here showed up was when nami got sick and went to drum island ¬¬
-
@Sandai:
There's no way you could've possibly had mistaken One Piece for Naruto.
I haven't watched Naruto, though I'm told it's starting to suck pretty bad as well.
Not all animes end in 24 episodes.
I know. I'm merely commenting on the fact that 24-episode animes were all that I watched when I first started dabbling into anime, and I hated it. I wanted longer stories. Now I don't know what I want.
Out of curiosity The main story or the current story arc?
The overall main story. We're at 500 Chapters, over 10 years of this story and we're being told that we're in the general area of "halfway done". The story arc is fairly well-paced at the moment and I like it.

I don't joke about my opinion. I've watched all the episodes of OP and read all the chapters. I am currently displeased with the pacing of the anime, and I am displeased with the overall pacing of the entire series. But I'm already in past my ears in the OP universe, so it's not like I'm going to stop watching because of it.
-

Wow I think that was the best comparison i have ever heard.
and i am going to say no it is not overrated
-
Oh its just that when I got to an anime/manga forum and see independent sub-forums for BOTH Bleach AND Naruto but no One Piece,I tend to say which is rightfully better.
-
Don't misunderstand me, I like Naruto too.
Not what I meant. I mean that Naruto and One Piece are pretty much so different in execution that it's not really even worth comparing the two.
Oh, and threatening Gerchak with bodily harm isn't really going to do anything but further convince him that the series is overrated. Just so you know.
-

Then may i ask why your here? I mean It's oen thing to watch, but to come on a forum for it when your generally displeased by it? Doesnt make much sense. I think Naruto and Bleach are waaay overated compared to one piece which gets ALOT of bad po. I used to read naruto in part 1 and i went on forums and everything. When i thought it started to go downhill, (after hidan and kazaku arc) i stopped going on forums and reading. Simple as that. Could it possibly be that One piece is so captivating that even thought you dont like alot of things you simply cant bear to stop reading?
-
One Piece is under-rated in the West. And just to start shit….....The best Arc was Warship Island!111!!111
But on a serious note I consider G-8 better than Enies Lobby. But that is my opinion. -
The best Arc was Warship Island!111!!111
GAH!!!
running around on fire
IT BURNS! IT BURNS!
rolling on the floor
DOUSE THE FLAMES!

We do have/had people in the Naruto & Bleach threads here who've done the same so it shouldn't really surprise you.
-
one piece UNDERrated
if you want overrated, try naruto, its like WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY over rated - - -
I think it's underrated. But most non-fans find it as overrated as Naruto or Bleach, or if they're a fan of those two series they just find it overrated shit.
I have watch Bleach and Naruto too and i can't understand why those are over rated populaire compare the One Piece outside Japan.
-
Compared to Naruto and Bleach, its under-rated in the West.
But that's only because those two are very over-rated. Other than that, One Piece isn't underrated.
-
Why One piece overrated in the West?
-Horrible Dub
-blame 4kids (changed/alteration)
-blame 4kids (pirate rap)
-blame the ninja vs pirate war a.k.a naruto vs one piece in America.
-The West thinks one piece doesn't have deep story since.
-the West looks for something that caught attention to them Ex: Naruto's blonde hair and orange jumpsuit caught attention to the viewers. -
One Piece is overrated in my book. I love One Piece, but people always act like it's perfect, which it isn't. It has had some rather boring arcs IMO (Skypiea, Thriller Bark, and the Davy Back Fight). I enjoy them, but they aren't up to par with the other pieces of the story.
Another thing that knocks this manga down a peg is Oda's inability to kill ANYONE.
It takes the sense of danger out of everything if no one dies from an explosion to the face, being shot and etc. I know what the theme of One Piece is, and quite honestly, I don't care.
That sort of thing should fall on main characters only, I felt so stupid about feeling bad for Pell only to have him limping back. :/
One Piece is a great manga with it's unpredictability (aside from the question, "Are they dead?"), and presentation. It helps the manga feel alive even in the most boring moments.
However, to hear so many people call One Piece the best definitely gives me the feeling that it's overrated.
-
You're on a OP forum, obviously you'll see a lot of ppl sayong "OP is good"…
For Skypiea and Thriller Bark, they were just after one of the best arcs, respectively Arabasta and Enies Lobby. So you would obviously feel them like boring compared to what just happened...Davy Back Fight was a short story (at least in the manga) and I agree, rather boring. In the beginning, Oda didn't hesitate to kill characters, go see the very first chapter and then Nami's past. I think that because OP has gone mainstream, Oda felt like it was his responsability to put harshness to a lower level. After all, in Japan, OP is mainly dedicated to ppl around 15 year old...but true, it is still a weak point...
Edit: but this weak point is common to most shounen...

he never really killed
Only in Flashbacks and very non important characters but to be honest it may have gone up a bit in the impeldown arc but that's it…. he still kills in flashbacks nowadays too

There is not enough adventure anymore I would say…
-
There is not enough adventure anymore I would say…
How is any of the modern stuff different in that way from things like Kuro or Arlong. Or Crocodile or CP9. What are you talking about.
-
I can definitely see why some people may not like OP. The fights (In the anime) could be a little better animated and it's hard to keep track of everything that's happened in 10 years. There were some arcs I just wanted to be over so I could get to Enies lobby
-
There were some arcs I just wanted to be over so I could get to Enies lobby
You're a horrible person.
-
There were some arcs I just wanted to be over so I could get to Enies lobby
Whoa there little buddy, haha, seems your lost.
Let me help you out. -
I think it is perfectly rated… it's a great anime plain and simple. The Manga sounds much better than the anime IMO, because the anime has so much damn filler. I don't want to rewatch episode 10 on episode 300 if you know what I mean. Sometimes it just seems too slow even if it's not filler. Sometimes a whole episode seems to consest of what could be turned into a 1 minute conversation.
The content is great though... and One Piece has the most interesting and captivating characters out of any anime I have ever seen next to Yu Yu Hakusho probably.
-
I think One Piece has weak points from time to time but more than perhaps any other series you get the sense that Oda knows where he's going with his story. All these little hints and suggestions at the beginning of the arcs always build up to something amazing by the end. Things that may seem underwhelming at the time tend to be revealed to be something much more by the end. There's not a single One Piece arc I dislike - and the series just keeps getting better and better.
It knows when to be weird and quirky, comedic and serious. He knows when to insert fanservice and when to let it die. His characters have crushing victories and face bitter defeats. OP is very much an adventure manga, and I love it for it.
There may be times when I'm unsatisfied, but I try to take everything in stride, and I'm usually bowled over by the end of it.
-
One Piece is a log way from being perfect. but it's also "A LOT" closer then every other manga/anime iv'e read/seen. and i as well think that it is undrated by none hardcore fans but overrated by hardcore fans. i myself is a hardcore fan, i i think one piece is far better then any other media i have been exposed of. but it also have a lot of flaws. things i do not like with one piece:
the way they lift buildings and fight of 1000s of marines makes the main characters seem a bit to "godly"
Luffy is a little to stupid in some situations. like i don't dislike thick or goofy but i feel the ( manga spoiler:)! "my head hurts from thinking to much" in amazon lily was a bit to much
how they are pirates but don't steal stuff (guess this happens mostly in the movies so maybe it's a bad example), okay for not being mean and burn villages and stuff. but not stealing when your out of money and you are hunted by the government then theres no real idea that you become pirates in the first place.the really good stuff:
The way One piece doesn't really loose it's red thread (yes he's not searching for One piece currently but as i hope it will be just an arc and then they continue) they doesn't go back to a village and then go on a adventure, they are progressing through the grand line bit for bit, so you can see their progress. something a lot of mangas lack.
and the running gags. man i love running gags.. usually young people don't like running gags. but they are the funniest things there is! guess that's just another thing that proves that I'm getting old(17).and i think killing of characters is overrated. but yea one piece is taking it a bit far.
and why i think as everyone else that don't have a reason that bleach/naruto/(alot of better but not as good as one piece mangas) is overrated and im not gonna spoiler tag the spoilers i say so if you read naruto/bleach and don't wanna be spoiled. don't look:
Naruto: he has already surpassed the current hokage. but the story continous on and on…. nuff said
Bleach: wait.. does bleach have a story? no not really. however it's a great settings and a lot of interesting characters though.but yea One Piece have a lot of flaws. but not as many as anything else i have read in no particular order:
naruto, Dragon ball, shaman king, bleach, death note, hunter x hunter, fairy tail, full metal alchemist, hellsing, koukou debut, Hajime no ippo, Air Gear.
I think this were all the mangas i really got into at some point. Im not counting the ones i didn't like, only have read a few chapters of as i can't have a correct opinion. however by those i motioned death note is really one of the best, as it is finished. wich i consider to be a huge plus, hellsing is finished as well but I'm watching the anime(ultimate). and it doesn't have as good story as death note IMO -
One Piece has some flaws its not perfect but i got to say its much better then alot of the mangas or animes i have ever seen i don;t know it caught to me alot and made me appracite Oda himself and his awesome art style.
i wish Oda did designs for an RPG himself like Akira does with Dragon Quest or maybe they both can design characters for a Dragon Quest game.
the manga is great and the official source and its wonderful artwork but there is some scenes that is handled better in the anime like the sogeking song which he did sang when he was introduced but when the anime did it they did it like a intro to a show and it made me laugh out loud because of that.
One Piece itself is a mix of Action, Adventure, Comedy and Drama also Romance as well and this is something that i love and it has deeply inspired me it made me think of life in a brand new way and also i have started to write a Comic (manga) because of it.
so in other words One Piece has its flaws but to me i feel the show and manga is one of the best i have ever seen out there and i am glad that one piece is the best selling manga as well.
