The Flintstones sucked even more than Family Guy did, why is there even a demand for this?
Family Guy: Isn't abuse funny?

Yabadaba doo!!!!!!!
The flintstones never sucked. It is just a different style of comedy. -
@bartholemew:
I am waiting for the Flintstones. Family guy had its run but it is time for something new. Finish season 10 and get working on a new project. Mr Washy Washy. You yes give me my shirt I no have your shirt. Street Fighter. The show still has some good gags in it.

Ahahah haha Classic…...
I think i wanna get the rock out of here for now.Just watched an episode with Mr. Washy Washy.
You yes have my shirt. Brilliant episode -
@bartholemew:

Yes, If not being funny at all counts as a different style of comedy. I understand the importance Hannah Barbara had for western animation and I really respect his dedication to work…
...but I always thought his cartoons just plain sucked. The animations (yes, I know that is was very low-budget), the characters, the stories, the jokes, just about everything.I'm so getting nailed to the cross for this.
Don't you know its because people are morbidly curious?
I guess so. It's just depressing. I mean, just how long can you continue to feed people with trash…
-

Who here in the what now?
-
I just basically heard someone say that Topcat, Tom and Jerry, the Jetsons, Scooby Doo, and Wacky Races sucked.
I'm gonna eat a tub of cookies and cream ice cream, smothered in arsenic.
-
I don't know of any Hanna-Barbera cartoons that had a significantly lower budget cept maybe the Gene Deitch Tom & Jerry cartoons which are shit.
Jetsons, Scooby Doo
I'm personally not too fond of the 80's Jetson's revival and hate the early Scooby cartoons with Scrappy along with What's New Scooby Doo and all the terrible movies it spawned.
-
I just basically heard someone say that Topcat, Tom and Jerry, the Jetsons, Scooby Doo, and Wacky Races sucked.
Don't forget Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, The Pirates of Dark Water, and Swat Kats.
(and under technicality, pretty much everything Cartoon Network has ever made, including Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls and Venture Brothers.)
-
My opinion on Family Guy is a complicated one. On one hand when it works well I actually really like the show, I think it's actually very funny. But it also has a tendency of being way too tasteless as far as I'm concerned and I don't particularly care for McFarlane's political views or the way he expresses them. So on the whole I would say I do enjoy Family Guy although I definitely think there are better shows out there. Honestly I think American Dad has become the better show at this point, it's a fair bit more consistent.
Oh yeah. And Seth MacFarlane working on a Flintstones show kind of rubs me the wrong way even though I'm way too young to really appreciate the Flintstones. I feel like the Flinstones is definitely one of those things where you had to be there to enjoy it. Which might be one of the major reasons why MacFarlane working on it is a bad thing.
-
Oh shit, I totally forgot Tom and Jerry. I love that show. I grew up with Nicktoons and Looney Toones, so I didn't really watch that much of the Barbera material like Jonny Quest, Topcat, Space Ghost, The Pirates of Dark Water, Swat Kats, the 50s stuff, Hong Kong Phooey, etc. I know that I don't really remember Wacky Races, disliked the Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, but I liked the Smurfs, the Addams Family and some movies like Charlotte's web. Didn't really watch anything from Cartoon Network and didn't know about Hanna-Barbera being involved in it until now.
To be honest, I realized after researching some stuff on wikipedia that I really didn't know that much about this, so saying Barbera sucked was a really bold statement of mine and I'm sorry. I don't even know half of his work and being the negative asshole I am, I just focused on the stuff that I disliked.
Oh yeah, Family Guy. Stopped watching it after the 4 season, even the 16 year old pothead version of me was thinking that this show was getting too stupid. Trust me, that's saying a lot. Around that time, I watched Drawn Together for god's sake. -
How the fuck can anyone say they hate Tom and Jerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I enjoyed when i was young: Johnny Bravo. Cow and Chicken. Dexters Lab. The flintstones. Scooby doo. The Smurfs (i do not know who made this). The powerpuff girls. Top Cat. Oh and Mutleys laugh. Most of the rest were 50/50 to me.
Though i did not like Swat KAts and Yogi Bear -
@bartholemew:
How the fuck can anyone say they hate Tom and Jerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He didn't. He's already explained he didn't realize Hanna Barbera was more than just Flintstones and Jetsons.
-
If one hates Tom and Jerry then you have no soul. I don't care if you aren't crazy about western animation
How can anyone hate the classics? Tom and Jerry are timeless(not talking about anyone in particular)
-

See "'not talking about anyone in particular"' its in general.

Chuck Jones apparently didn't think too highly of his take on them.
-
I'm personally not too fond of the 80's Jetson's revival and hate the early Scooby cartoons with Scrappy along with What's New Scooby Doo and all the terrible movies it spawned.
What's New Scooby-Doo is particularly infuriating as it totally threw out any of the advances made by Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost (and, to a lesser extent, Alien Invaders and Cyber-Chase) to go right back to the same tired plots that drove the franchise into the ground before and all of the films since have had the exact same cookie-cutter storylines as well.
Mysteries Inc or not, we're still getting things like Camp Scare and Legend of the Phantosaur that are the exact same story as any given episode of What's New Scooby-Doo. Of course, there was the one about the Goblins, but that seemed like a callback to those really weird '80s movies with Scrappy-Doo than anything else.
@RobbyBevard:
He didn't. He's already explained he didn't realize Hanna Barbera was more than just Flintstones and Jetsons.
Going by the original message, I don't even think he was aware that Hanna-Barbera was the collaboration of William Hanna and Joe Barbera, but thought instead that it was one guy actually named Hannah Barbera. That might even have still been the case until he reads this message.
-
i'm not particularly fond of classic hanna barbarra (cept tom and jerry. that is gold) but for their time they were awesome. things change over time. (people even bash all those awesome 80's cartoons now) :O

Flintstones was awesome. -
Last nights episode certainly is following the recent trend toward more drama-oriented episodes. This one deals with the abusive relationship of Quagmire's sister and wife-beater fiance. While the show manages to work in some jokes, it's mostly painfully real. Then the show segues into into calculated murder in the woods. It's all kind of ghoulish and played mostly straight–possibly one of the straightest episodes in the show's history.
There were a few good jokes and cutaways, but it's largely overshadowed by the serious subject matter. I'm guessing it is due to the "Halloween-ish" tone of the plot that they decided to play this straight (Compared to last year's much more humorous Agatha Chritie-inspired episode/special).
Still, it's very odd to see this as the most serious episode of FOX, compared to the much more comedic killer/murder subplot in The Cleveland Show.
Also found it odd that the "hot tub" episode of American Dad wasn't released during this Halloween block. It was clearly intended to be, and would have probably been the best one
-
Yeah, I've heard. I skippped out on watching the rest of animation domination because I figured watching the rest would have been a waste of time. I'll give it an online watch later this week, if I remember.

A SNEAK PEEK AT WHAT'S TO COME!
For a sec, I thought that was a real sneak peek.
It's too early to say whether it will be good or not. The Flintstones were good in their day, especially since the first seasons came out when H&B were at their creative peak (television-wise). However, they probably don't date as well as some of the best shows of that era, especially when dealing with later Flinstone seasons.
The MacFarlane series have so far proven to have distinct tones and feels that separate them from the (usually) madcap Family Guy. Obviously, The Cleveland Show has the most in common due to its spin-off roots, but it's still fairly distinct from FG. I'm fairly sure The (New) Flinstones will be more rooted to the H&B universe than "Family Guy B.C."

I didn't see it, but I've heard things about the latest episode. And none of it is good.

Okay after watching alot of clips that were uploaded due to their apparent "hilarity" I just have to say this: I don't find this series funny at all. Not even the first season.
Honestly I really wonder what the hell Doug sees in this.

http://jezebel.com/5854810/family-guy-hits-horrible-new-lows-with-domestic-abuse-episodeI didn't see it either, but that lady's kinda dense for not getting that they're not making fun of abusive people, they're trying to show people how stupid it looks for accepting it. At least, that's what her so called list of "offensive jokes" are telling me.
The jokes aren't funny (Okay, that "We can't help until it's too late" joke is), but I get what they were going for.
This poster hit the nail on the head:
I agree, but I think that this suffers from what I have named The Chappelle Effect. That is, the jokes are self-aware and the joke is that people actually believe these horrible things that Peter is saying, but the audience isn't self-aware enough to get it so they think it's straight humor. Like when Dave Chappelle saw young white kids repeating jokes from his show without the sense of irony needed for them to not actually be horribly racist jokes.
Make sense? (Edit comment)
-
Geez. That bit wasn't funny when they did it in an episode to make a point about Quagmire hating Brian… they really made an entire episode about spouse beating? REALLY?
God I hate this show. I wish it didn't air 27 times a day on every channel I actually watch.
-
This was another of those episodes that was trying to do something different and failed miserably at it though not to the extent of the Brian and Stewie in the bank vault episode and that's primarily because they went out of their way to make the boyfriend as big of a bastard as possible.
There was only one cutaway gag that I remember in the entire thing (Iraq Lobster) and it was the only worthwhile thing to come out of that entire episode. That bit was so stupid that it managed to become much funnier than it should have been for a joke that they had already done once before. That and the lobster dance was actually kind of charming.

"Well, let's hope she's good at talking because we know she doesn't listen so good "
They were making fun of abused people, end of story.
And for the record, I can quite safely say that I prefer Cleveland Show over Family Gugy. Cleveland Show at least doesn't make me feel unclean after watching it (for the most part).

Yeah, this was certainly a misfire. The only real message this one had was that abuse was bad and the necessity for intervention. The jokes relating to the abuse just came across as bad taste and a desperate attempt at shock humor.
The only good thing I'll say for it is that it had a "happy" ending with the physical abuse ending, and that the abuse itself was handled rather realistically and not in a overly comedic fashion, which would have taken away from its seriousness. Also, I liked Peter in this one, just because he almost entirely clueless and did lighten the mood some. And the clown porn.
-

But Brian and Stewie have single handedly created the most disgusting episodes. Because watching a baby hit on a dog is fun. :/

So a joke can be incredibly racist and unfunny, as long as there's implied irony in there? And its the audience's fault for not getting it?
I think that just means its racist and unfunny, and the comedian doesn't have the better judgement to not go there, or the skill to MAKE it funny. (George Carlin could take any topic and be funny about it. He had the talent.)
Yes, any given joke has a target audience, and there are some jokes that some people will get that others won't (especially inside jokes that reference favorite movies or past personal events) but to go "Look, abuse! For 22 minutes! Hilarious, right?" isn't funny.
It was one thing early in the show's run when Brian was a voice of reason and he would consistently say Peter was a dumb idiot and counter whatever was being said, but Brian degraded over time into his own horribly flawed unlikeable character who is wrong about nearly everything, so he doesn't even provide that counterbalance anymore.
-
This seems like a good time as any to mention this. I never thought George Carlin was funny, like at all.

I'll chalk that up to you being Swedish.

I'm from a European micro-state and, in my opinion, George Carlin is the funniest man who ever lived.

Yes, sometimes shock humor is funny if it's pulled it off correctly. It's the idea of "laughing at yourself (or the way the world works)".
Again, I didn't see the episode. So I'm most likely giving the FG writers way too much credit. (I really don't want to. Brian eating Stewie's poop and talking about suicide was pretty much the closer for me.)
I'll go watch it after work today. :/
-
I like the first 3 seasons with their randomness. It was relaxing to see a show that didn't require much thinking.
The rest is, well, you already know.
-
So yeah… I just watched that episode... and yeah.. wow.
It wasn't funny at all like I pictured them handling it in my mind. It was like a train wreck that I couldn't turn away from.
Even the ending which started out nice got ruined by Joe's unnecessary comment at the end.
Seriously. What was that?
Jeff beating Brenda over Jay Leno.. really?
The beginning was funny though with Quagmire.
-
Did anyone watch this new episode with Ryan Reynolds?
It had some funny moments, all the scenes with Ryan were a hoot. But this shock humor crap is REALLY REALLY getting out of hand.
They made fun of autistic people and threw in a random Abortion joke (WHY?)
-
@Thousand:

The where ? :wassat:
-
Oh God this show is awful now. I would rather watch new episodes of Spongebob then this crap now. I remember the earlier seasons when all of the jokes were random and pretty fun.
Now it's just embarrassing.

Just watched the abuse episode…..what was the point or lesson of that episode supposed to be?

Dude. Domestic abuse is hilarious. Making jokes about it and saying the woman deserved it is its own reward, clearly.
Also, pedophiles. They're funny enough to warrant multiple seasons of episodes and recurring character status.
And the least funny character on the show should get his own spinoff.
-

btw, I noticed people here never talk about the cleveland show.

I mean, at least it doesn't make you feel like you have to take a shower after watching it.
-
You know, I've given the show a lot more credit than most people. Most people say it got horrible after the first two seasons, but I'm gonna stick by and defend it up to the fourth, if not fifth season. But god, this show is just not funny now. Even last season, I would watch it out of habit, like Naruto, I just want to see where it's going despite it being bad. But man, now I can't even sit through the episodes.
The worst has gotta be the one with Peter and Brian going to an AA meeting. I mean, the 7 minute or so song about not drinking. I swear the writers on this show want to write musicals but can't get the job so they use it too pad Family Guy. It was at that point where I switched the channel when it aired on Fox, but last monday it aired on TBS and I sat through it. The sad part? The episode ended with a good moral feeling. Peter learned that he doesn't need to give up alcohol but just be responsible and limit his drinking. If they had simply made it funnier, and took out the song, it would have been like an early episode, where Peter learns his lesson and is still a goodhearted person.
