Okay, so any good high school grad knows that it is theoretically possible to travel forward in time on a level of SF proportions, although simply impractical for human beings since we cannot achieve speed of light.
But one thing I'm amazed about is that brilliant people continue to waste time on theorizing travelling back in time. Because folks, if going back in time were possible…..we'd already know -_-
Time Travelling is very morbid, it will mess up timeline which runs purely.
If time travel is common, the world would be screwed. Say for example, someone who is your decencents will go back in time and end up killing his/her ancestor.
Say we go back in the past and kill George Washington before he becomes president, what conquence will that serve? Or mayby you travel to 1890 and beat up someone who happens to be your ancestor, that would cause time distortion.
Time travelling must never happen, I wish people get over it. I use to think it's possible but now that would be dangerous, if time travelling exist, we won't be here. Plus we never meet anyone coming from the future proves the point that it don't exist and it's just a wild imagination. We are born to move foreward, not backwards.

the only reason why i went through four years of college in physics was that old TV show quantum leap. when i was a kid i've always thought it'd be cool to be a quantum physicist and time travel like sam beckett.
then after 4 years of physics i realized that time travelling violates every possible laws of physics, including negative uncertainty, negative entropy, and plenty other mathematical improbabilities. it's like watching my dreams shoved down my throat.
but ya, igalsfy's got a point. assuming that parallel universes exist (string theory, extra dimensions, supersymmetry), "if it's possible, we'd already know," cannot be used as an argument as to why time travelling is an impossibility.

The biggest thing that we would have to consider if it was possible to go back in time, would be if time theory followed either a cosmos or chaos theory
But how would we know if time travel works, since whatever was changed would just be our history? Maybe somebody did go back in time and assasinate the original first President and made George Washington President instead, how would we know?

it is possible that you'd mess our history up if you travelled back in time but your travelling could be part of the history as well. example: you could be your own father (Douglas Adams) and that would be according to the PLAN.
or it is impossible to change history no matter how hard you try because it is settled. you can only change the persons involved in the history. so if you killed hitler then there'd still be holocaust etc. but the bad guy would be someone else. that's from Darren Shan.
and we wouldn't necessary know that already. imagine if it is a responsible time traveller who does not mess around and does not tell anyone about his travel. most unlikely, yet that's possible and then he influences history and nobody knows about it. toyota

As long as it doesn't affect the natural order via Causality, you know, like becoming our own Grandfather, then it's fine.
But if we had a time machine to go back in time, then in order to stop the screwing up of time itself, then we must not show off our time travelling abilities. For all we know there could be us from the future in our time period right now taking vacations right now, but are not interacting in a way that it doesn't change the future (at least way too drastically). Course, that doesn't mean we should seek them out, travel to the future, try to get ourselves laid, get ourselves fired and then our apartment burning down due to scented candles.

If they went through the trouble of changing one President, I'm sure that something like…I dunno....say somewhere around August 1945 or say, September 2001, might have turned out a little different from the way we know it.

I personally belive that changing the past is impossible under most circumstances because in changing it you also are trying to change and remove your reason for wanting to go back into the past in the 1st place.

Well, I think traveling back in time is possible. And I do agree that messing with the past could change the future. In fact, I bet people in the future travel back in time for vacations like in Family Guy. But, I do doubt they can do it in the near future. More like 200 years or so.

Yeah, I'd go back to the mid/late 90's, load up on a whole bunch of Pogs, then bring along one of the new Pokemon games and show the kids at elementary schools all the new Pokemon. That would blow their minds. That, and I'd be sure to pick up a brand new Super Nintendo, and I'd sit down to watch the old Sonic the Hedgehog and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons.

Something either exists or doesn't. If we can launch people to the moon and let them walk around on it from the raw materials on this planet, there isn't anything we aren't eventually capable of understanding beyond death.

Since 500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years from now (actual figure) our universe will experience its 'heat death', I've always figured our purpose is to figure out what lies beyond it.
And if we can't? The purpose of life will just have been to enjoy what little time we had and to burn up.
That said, if it was possible to travel back in our time (concept of parallel streams aside) we would develop a method. And if we'd developed a method we'd already know because let's face it:
If in the future, such a method was deisgned, it's not going to be employed by terrorists or some vengeful little snot. It would be a project of, I dare say, global proportion. In order to test said method they would have to send subjects back and the only way to accurately test this would be sending something back with a method to come back. The idea of this being pulled off is proposterous since such a device could hardly be as simplified as a wristwatch.
If someone was sent back, they would not only have to go back in time, but also stay there, and what purpose would that hold unless they made it public.
Not only that, but simply the concept of travel itself is in and of itself a paradox. If the body is being rearranged, there must be something to receive it on the other end. Since such devices don't exist in our time, nothing could receive it, and if such devices don't exist at any time in the past, they could never travel to the past until there was such a device to receive it.
Now provided we wait X years and a receptor is created. That would mean it would only be possible to travel to that time and no further. BUT even that is a paradox in and of itself because it would have to be active and 'tuned' (whatever that could mean) to receive an individual. This information would be impossible to convey to the past because there's no travelling to the past to let anyone know UNLESS the whatever is already 'tuned' for THAT person. It's a vicious circle of going nowhere.
Forward is a yes. Back? Nope. (parallel universes maybe but I wouldn't know)

Most humans hold a strong desire to stay alive, and thus know that a best chance for survival includes gettin' along with the neighbors. As Greg stated, post-apocalyptic scenarios aren't very likely, aside from some kind of catastrophic mishap.
As for time travel, though scientific rationale leans towards the theory that travelling to the past is impossible, that's not exactly a definite philosophy. As with a Divine Creator and solipsism, past-related time travelling cannot be disproven, so it's always viable.
Even if it was possible, there's the issue of whether it involves destiny-based manipulation or causality. "Simply touching that tin can can alter the entire future of mankin" vs. "You were destined to go back and touch that tin can, so nothing will be changed because of it".
I say we ask an expert on this topic…

I think time ''travel'' will be possible, but only in the way of ''observing'' not interacting. Hell, that's already even possible.

Yes indeed, look up at that bright thing in the sky. It's 5 minutes behind the present. And to see further back, wait until the bright thing disappears and look up again. If somehow we had a camera with a muthafucka of a zoom by Alpha Centuri we could certainly ourselves from the past.
As far as future travel, that's a no-brainer. If we went up into space and zoomed around at the speed of light for a bit and came back down, we'd be significantly in the future despite not having aged.
The problem lies within getting an object not already at the speed of light, to obtain the speed of light. Which is…at this stage of history and physics anyway....considered impossible.
