I think One Piece will be in a halfway done state until the Straw Hats leave Fishman Island and go to the New World. And that could very well be another year or so.
How long will One Piece be? (Amount of Volumes/chapters)
-
-
I don't get it, he plans to end One piece in 5 years but he think he is only halfway?? Why he didnt said 8-10 years then?
-
He said this last Saturday. Last time he said it was before a couple of years.
If every interview he says he's only halfway through the series, then I'm afraid it will never end.
afraid? you mean excited?
-

Agrees with this.^^^
If it were me, I'd keep saying it was half done until they're half through the new world, just to stop people from asking, since they'll already know the answer. :P

Source: ANN - One Piece #56 Manga Gets Record 2.85-Million Print Run (Updated)
Oh well, there will be plentiful more One Piece for years to come.
Hopefully Oda can keep it interesting.
Holy mother I hate ANN.
THEY ran the story?!
For Christ's sake.
Due to their shitty choice of words it's easy to misread their (half-assed) reporting.
woo-sah
Nowhere does it even mention years in the said section. What it REALLY says in the original article is, "What station do you think you're at?", where the interviewer is comparing OP's story to the stations of a mountain. Oda replied that he'd LIKE to say he's at 9 but he's probably only at 5.
NOTHING ABOUT YEARS LEFT.
If you see anyone talking about this make them feel bad that they were conceived.
-
lol… ^
Good to know.
-
It will be as long as it will be, until Buggy and Chopper face off in a world-shattering battle.
-
Until Oda is completely satisfied with the One Piece world and it's characters; which I think will be around 150 volumes; it seems like a lot, but the One Piece world is just too big. Oda may end the Strawhats story around 100 volumes, and, perhaps, make a side-story so to explore more of the One Piece world.
-
100 for the straw hats, 300 to explain everything and 1000 to tell everybody's stories. It's all up to God Oda
-
has anyone mentioned the possibility that Oda is constantly saying halfway because he wants the time of the ending to be a surprise, maybe sooner than we believe it to be? that would suck
-
Reminds me of my family's canooing trip. Every time I or my cousins asked how far along the river we are, my mom would say "half-way". EVERY. FRIGGIN. TIME.
-
No, because the Straw Hats have actually been close to halfway through the Grand Line for about 3 years now and in that time Oda's been saying halfway…I don't think it'll actually be halfway until they make it to the New World. It could still be quite a while. I don't see Marineford wrapping up all too quickly and there will probably be another "cool down" set of chapters like after Enies Lobby....Straw Hats have to reunite, then there's Fishman Island, which will hopefully be a decent sized arc. I think the fact that we didn't see Jimbei 20 years ago in Ch. 0 might be a good indication that Oda's got stuff planned for Jimbei's backstory that he's not ready to show...perhaps because he will do so at Fishman Island.
If he ends it anytime soon it just won't feel right.
-
I could see Fishman Island being the small arc that preludes a single, massive New World arc which climaxes with the discovery of Raftel.
-
After doing some serious thinking, I don't see how One Piece could be any less than 100 volumes unless Oda REALLY speeds things up. There are enough chapters out for 57 tankobans. Now, let's say the War, Straw Hat regroup, and Fishman Island arc all takes place AT LEAST up to volume 60. Next they will be in the New World, (assuming they don't get distracted). I don't see how Oda can fit all of the mysteries in One Piece that have yet to be revealed and all of the epicness yet to come in only 40 volumes. Like someone said, this War is the climax of the first part of the story and the prelude to the New World travels. There is also bound to be AT LEAST 1 big arc, (like Alabasta, Skypiea), that will be 5 volumes. And let's not forget the digressions that the crew experience. Weren't they planning on traveling to Fishman Island about 10 or so volumes ago? Something like that could happen. The New World travels, secrets to be revealed, epic adventures to come, and climax of the One Piece story is not something to be rushed. I would not be surprised if this series reaches 100 volumes and I would be very surprised if it did not break at least 90. I don't know, maybe it's just my inner fanboy speaking when I say I want this epic to reach the triple digits, but if I really think about it, the way things are going and will go in the future, the series can't be rushed with all of its everlasting potential and has to break the 100 mark.

If Oda only puts 10 chapters in Volume 57, we're 4 chapters into volume 58 already. If he puts 11 in because of the 17 page chapters instead of 19 page chapters, we're 3 chaps. into vol. 58 and if he puts 12, making it slightly more pages than 10 chapters of 19 pages, we're 2 chapters in…we're into volume 58 no matter what.
So with no sign of Marineford wrapping up anytime soon, I'll say we've got at least until 60 just to end Marineford, 61 to wrap up the arc / reunite Straw Hats, and then 62 to finally start Fishman Island. I actually hope he goes into the other Straw Hats' adventures with a little more detail, but that's just wishful thinking.
The only way Fishman Island could be done by volume 60 is for Oda to wrap up Marineford, reuinte the Straw Hats, tie up all the loose ends of the war, and go through Fishman Island in 16 - 18 chapters...I don't think that's long enough.
Alabasta was 6 volumes and Skypiea was 7 volumes.
The entire Baroque Works saga was 11 volumes
The enitre Skypiea saga was 9 volumesJust for some figures on how long even 2 big arcs in the New World will be.
The New World has been built up for 3 years and cannot reasonably be wrapped up in only 1 arc.
This battle at Marineford is only the climax of the first half of One Piece - leaving quite a few mysteries.
I'll be honestly surprised if we don't get significantly long flashbacks detailing both the True History and Roger's Era in greater detail....we got Turn Back the Pendulum in Bleach...Roger's adventures are just as important to the OP story as the story told in that arc in Bleach imo.
A final arc after Raftel is pretty much necessary. The True History will only be discovered AFTER Luffy is Pirate King, so honestly for them to do anything about it, he'll already have to have reached Raftel and become Pirate King, as I think Roger intended things.
So I see a minumum of 1,200 chapters honestly...that's my conservative bet....I'll say it'll be closer to 1,250 though..about 125 - 126 volumes.
I could easily see it reaching 1,500 while remaining interesting though...aproximately 150 - 151 volumes.
-

I agree. I was just being lenient…VERY lenient.

One could hope, and with confidence may I add, my friend. I would love to see that.
-
One Piece will end… in the year three-thousand...~~~ in the year three-thousAAAAND~
-
I guess it will about 90-100 volumes.
-
ODA has just confirmed that the OP wil be over in 2014…
-
How can he this sure about that?
-
because hes a noob who just read ANN news.
-
It was on a recent interview, but he's not sure yet. It is just a guess
-
It was on a recent interview, but he's not sure yet. It is just a guess
No, he said he would LIKE to think he was 9/10ths of the way there, but in reality he reckoned he was about halfway.
Greg even says it not twenty posts ago.
-
Thx for the tip !
-
I reckon it gonna be another 10year since they only reached halfway thru the grandline =D
-
100 volumes with around 1000 chapters
-
Probably more than 100 vols since its "supposedly" half way and usually an epic story like this will get dragged out longer as its ending.
-
He says he's about halfway in that interview…which would mean the best estimate on his statements is at least 112 volumes (a little over 1100 chapters)...but given that the halfway point has kept moving along with the story, I'd say a little longer than that would be an even better estimate. I think the real halfway point will be crossing the Red Line.
-
What i hope is that Oda still enjoy his story and have fun with it, if the mangaka likes what he does, it's good. Look at DBZ, it turned in powerfest, Kishi does not seem enjoy his manga neither and look at the actual story…
The last interview and sbs from Oda make me think that he begin to be bored of OP :| -
When someone questioned Oda about wanting to end the manga he explained himself.
He just doesn't like that kids have to buy so much to enjoy the story, thats why he is so excited about the free online manga thats up now for the japanese folks. He says kids read that and us adults buy all the actual volumes. He loves his fans and his story too much to be lazy. He has said it multiple times lately and I have absolute faith in him.
-
Oda never indicated he was bored with One Piece at all…that's the reason it's still going...his enjoyment of his own work is the very reason he pushed well past the 5 years he had planned for the story to be running initially.
-
The fact is that he would like to be at 9 (station mountain thing), in clear, he would like to be at the end of OP, but he says that he is only at 5. If he enjoy what he is doing with OP then why he would like to be at the end, thats what is worrying me. When i eat a icecream, i enjoy it. I don't think ' i would like to be at the end of my ice cream" but instead, crap i dont want to finish it.
Thats why i think that he begin to be bored, after all hes making chapters each weeks for 12 years and had a baby recently. -
it was many time mentioned that 1000 chapters would seem great to have in the end..
when oda could accomplish that it ..and that wouldn`t be to unrealistic, seeing how oda plans big events on celebrationchapters..
chapter 100 appearance of dragon
chapter 500 appearance of rayleighso oda looks how he can sattle special events on special chapters
-
hmm i hope we reach at least 1k thatd make my time watching one piece even better
but i agree with alot of others that there is hjust to much to be done before the end i dont see it ending under a thousand unless oda plans on leavin us with a crap load of loose end's
but honestly i bet if u asked him hed probably have no idea when it would end ^.^ -
i once read that he has so many great ideas of island in the NW that he can`t possibly take them all to put them in the manga..
so we will get a load of TOP TIER islnads in the NW with always the possibility that oda takes "just one more" of his island into the mangamaybe he gives away some ideas for fillers…would be the best for all of us!
-
9001 chapters .
I don't know, I'm going to guess around 1000 chapters.
-
WHAT OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you`re crazy kairouseki -
That's not entirely a valid comparison…Oda's not eating a bowl of ice cream, he's hard at work...he's doing his job. Writing manga is a lot of hard work requiring a lot of deciation which he obviously has....which he said in SBS saying he's dedicated to seeing One Piece through to the end...Oda's worried about his fans mostly as he commented on the "ideal length" of a manga where everyone can buy all the volumes and he's saying he's past that. It really has nothing to do with his enjoyment of the series.

Thank you!
I really like that he is worried about his fans trying to cover so much story with so many books. But he basicly said he feels better about it now that many of the old chapters can be read online on the official website.
-
I dunno… But I cann see it going for the next 10 years... 1000 chapters would be amazing but I hope Oda could still hold the quality of his work.
And if he can really time to end it at chapter 1000 it would be awesome... But that's just dreaming

I think what he is saying is that he wishes he has gotten more done then he already has.
Just like everyone when they are setting out to do anything.

Considering Fish-Man Island is only about halfway through the Grand Line, and the SHs aren't even there yet and the New World is tougher, I wouldn't be surprised if One Piece surpassed 100 volumes. Not to mention, everyone is going to fulfill their dreams, which adds even more to the story.
Your opinions?
-
I'm gonna say a little over 80 volumes.
Plus, there's a topic like this somewhere, so don't get surprised if it gets merged.

So, the East Blue arc took 11 volumes, and currently there's 58 volumes released. We've spent 47 volumes on the Grand Line, and we'll still need 3-4 more to even get to the New World.
And the New World needs as many, if not more volumes than the first half of the Grand Line. So I'm gonna bet roughly 120 volumes.
Everyone who's saying he can wrap up it at around 80 volumes is fucking nuts. You are aware that we have 60 volumes of material right now, right? You actually think that Luffy will find One Piece in a little over 200 chapters? What the hell are you smoking?
