It could be worse. We could have 9 chapters of Narudo, 1 chapter of One Piece, and 2 chapters of Bleach and that was it in the magazine period.
New Official Viz Manga Discussion

Okay, I am blind.
Three for One Piece. ^_^
-
So Bleach must have 3, as well.
-
Nope, not as far as I can tell. Viz has not even given a date for the next volume, either.
-
Well, if nothing else it's good that One Piece has a little more. Kind of surprising to see Viz giving that more than they are to Bleach. Especially since they have more of a hand in Bleach in the US.
But I'm not one to complain. The faster we get One Piece, the better.
-
I'm assuming that the third chapter ends in the middle of Vivi's flashback, right?
-
I saw some of those holographics covers of Yu-Gi-Oh but that was years ago. I have noticed that the local Waldenbooks has stocked some hardback copies of Bleach and Naruto Vol. 1.
edit: What the hell? Amazon's has those limited edition books listed for release in 2010.
http://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Vol-Romance-Limited/dp/1591163641/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203318705&sr=1-4Wait, so is this the limited edition that uses Zoro instead of Zolo?
-
Wait, so is this the limited edition that uses Zoro instead of Zolo?
We're not sure. It's only wishfull thinking, but I doubt Zoro will actually be in the book.
-
I just got DN:HTR and I'm excited. There was an ad in the back for the Death Note Dvd's and it says that they will include the limited edition figuries that were in the japanese ones ^^
-
Wait, so is this the limited edition that uses Zoro instead of Zolo?
Well they were printed back in 2003 so they might have Zoro but I've never come across one.
-
The first 4 volumes originally said 'Zoro'. Since the limited edition came out at the same time as the original printing of Volume 1, it will say 'Zoro'.
-

Yeah, the limited editon DN DVDs have been out for a while. I just can't afford em' at the moment. >.>

I am blind. There were two YYH.c And yes, One Piece ended in the middle of a Vivi flashback (watch out for gang rapings)!
-
Who was on the cover, Naruto right?
As for Hikaru no Go leaving the magazine, I'm kind of bummed. While it wasn't my favorite manga and isn't something I collect the graphic novels for, it did entertain me every month in the magazine. I guess if I ever want to finish the series, I'll just read online scans.
I have no objections to Slam Dunk! joining the lineup though. Better than the plauge that is Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
-

I have Vol 1(Logo is cat reading a book) and it says Zolo
wonder which Ed. I have? -

wonder which Ed. I have?Look at the bottom of the second page; it'll say which printing it is.
At a guess, I'd say third, but it might have been as early as second.

DarkShinobi, the GX Manga is ten times as good as the Anime! It's almost as if Takahashi himself writes it even though he is only a supervisor.

I agree, the GX manga is much, much better then the anime. The character development is faster and muc more apperent and the quality of the story overall is excellent in comparison to the anime. Manga adapitons of anime are almost always retellings of the anime versions in a very different way with a load of different story concepts and characters. And that's just what needed to be done to GX to make it a decent series' for me.
-
Didn't they announce the Devil Fruit Contest results in this month's volume?
-
I doubt that since they're still accepting ideas until March 14th.

It's not that I'm denying that the series has character development, it's just that the series as a whole doesn't interest me. Even the card sagas of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga bored me at points. I tend to usually skip GX, reading it only every 3 months or so.
-
I hope and pray Viz removes One Piece from SJ for awhile like they did with Naruto, and at least get us to the end of Alabasta.
-

Ok, I just wasn't sure when they were going to announce them.
-
@Master:

That would be HORRIBLE. We NEED Alabasta in the magazine, so that it will rocket One Piece to popularity. I think it was around Alabasta in Japan that One Piece became the uncontested most popular manga in Weekly Jump, though I could be wrong. Either way, the Alabasta arc being in American Jump could seriously rocket the series to popularity, especially because Bleach will be entering the abysmal Hueco Muendo arc relatively soon. SKYPIEA, on the other hand, could be released outside the magazine, which would accomplish two things. Firstly, alot of people see Skypiea as a bit of a let down after Alabasta. I love Skypiea, but alot of people don't. So this would stop the dragging out of Skypiea through the magazine from taking away all the popularity One Piece built up during Alabasta. Plus, it would make Water 7 come alot faster. And if anything can rocket One Piece to top popularity in America, it's that arc. It's volumes 24-33 that should be released outside the magazine, with volume 34 onwards back in, not volumes 19-23.

I just don't feel like waiting 5+ years for SJ to get Enies Lobby.
Besides, that's Japan.Everyone's caught Narutard fever here in America. Not saying I don't want One Piece to be popular, because we'd most definitely reap the benefits, but I just can't see One Piece rocketing off the charts.
SJ gives it next to no publicity, and OP's been permanently scarred by the 4Kids fiasco.
-
NASJ covers, contests, game and DVD coverage and an average of 3-4 chapters for a series they have little to gain from is not good enough for you?
-
I think the issue is just that the magazine is a massive pain in the ass for people who just buy the volumes.
I want One Piece to be successful too, and I'm pleased with Viz's translation, but I think it just frustrates fans to see how far behind the English releases are. That, and many people are probably jealous of how Bleach and Naruto get better treatment and exposure, whether they want to admit it or not.
In the back of my mind though, even without Naruto or Bleach, I don't think One Piece would ever reach the same pedestal. It's an acquired taste, and not something the average American is going to go bonkers for.
Well, at least I'm looking forward to purchasing volume 17 in the next week or so.
-
I agree with what Master Chef said. As much as I'd like to see One Piece get a better US fan base through ASJ, the speed at which Viz releases the volumes is just to slow for my liking. As mentioned before, when they get closer to Water 7 I'm not sure if collecting manga will still play a big part in my life, so I'd like to get as much English OP in my collection as possible.
-
These slow releases makes me want to learn Japanese so that I can circumvent the whole process of having to wait for Viz.
-
@Yuugi's:

That's not really it. I want OP to be taken out for awhile so Viz can catch up to Alabasta or Skypiea, then throw it back in the magazine.
One Piece was one of their first mangas in NASJ, but Naurto and Bleach overshadow it in every possible aspect. I'm just looking for a faster release since they've thrown OP on the back-burner as compared to the other titles.
-
Naruto has been there as long as One Piece. Seriously, they were banking on One Piece becoming the most popular, 4Kids went and screwed that up. And I know that One Piece has suffered ALOT of damage from 4Kids and the more or less ignoring of One Piece that has gone on until about 6 months ago when the FUNimation dub premiered, but I think the Alabasta arc could help the situation improve ALOT.
-
Naruto has been there as long as One Piece.
In the spirit of being anal, One Piece was in the original issue, and Naruto joined in the second issue. So technically speaking, One Piece has been there longer. By one whole month.
But yeah, they've essentially been around just as long.
And while it'd be nice for Viz to pimp One Piece more, they have given it a fair amount of exposure. They're not running a charity. Naruto is more popular, and thus they give it more attention.
It's not like Viz created this themselves. I don't recall Naruto getting special treatment above One Piece until after it really started to take off. Prior to then, it was usually Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh! that got pushed the most.

Yep, I remember that well, when One Piece and Naruto were the virtually unknown good series in the magazine and DBZ and YGO! were the hyped ones. Ahh, memories
Luffy would say "Damn you!" to nearly everyone he was pissed at.
There was virtually no psuedo-swearing in YuYu Hakusho.
And Naruto would run around flipping off his teachers and calling rouge ninja "big dicks"
Those were the days….

Kuwabara is a friend of justice. It's amazing how much sensible awesome comes out of this guy's posts. There'll be a place for you in the new utopia.

According to Amazon.co.uk, One Piece volume 17 has been delayed to November. I hope this is a mistake that will be fixed soon.
-
People actually believe OP being in ASJ will increase it's popularity, especially by one arc?
Yeah, from my understanding…not a lot of people buy ASJ to the point of making something popular, and most of those who do cause of the "ZOMG, IS DAT SUM NARUDO? OH OOOOOH BLEEACCCH!".
The anime, on TV, via fansubs on the internet, is what determines popularity in the states, not the manga.

Exactly, and lets not forget that (apparently) One Piece had a bad time in the internet fandom. According to the stories I've heard, the launch of the Naruto fan subs and scanlations were just in time for IIRC, while One Piece was in legal limbo for a while meaning few big name fan subbers would touch the series. That along with the negative opinions and the 4Kids dub that did nothing to support One Piece means few people in general both with it and generally refuse to try it out. I once saw someone swear off the series because of the dub. he acknowledged it was a bad dub but couldn't be bothered to try out the original version.
-
However, I've experienced a lot of people who once wouldn't touch the series coming around thanks to the FUNimation dub.
We also know that the ratings have been increasing on TV ever since that dub premiered, so One Piece is certainly more popular.
The only questions is how far will One Piece go. I think it has the potential to reach and surpass Naruto, but it would need a really good push to do that.
-
I'm not saying the series hasn't got the potential but I doubt it will ever reach the popularity levels Naruto and Bleach have or exceed them. For example, check "OneManga". It lists One Piece as one of it's top five series but sits behind Naruto at #1 and Bleach at #2.
-

I had heard a lot of the slow uptake involved the "Un-Japaneseness" of both the art and story concept.
A series called Samurai Ninja Ronin With Giant Eyeballs and Sakura Blossoms Everywhere would sell like hotcakes in the west.
Ironically, my favourite series seem to be the ones where the authors take on Western concepts from an Eastern perspective. I can't imagine an American 'Pirate Comic' being half as innovative as One Piece, and I shudder to think how they'd try to do Eyeshield 21.
-

I have to admit even I miss those days.

OP always had it bad: it was long when the fansubs and translations really got active, the anime seemed unapprochable and didn't look like a typical anime and it was licensed by 4Kids. Its like everything under the power of everyone was made to try and stop it from ever being popular. At least now people are finally starting making sense of the world but the damage is done and sadly more people rather watch screaming ninja and screaming Shinigami than adventuring pirates.

Wasn't Toriyama World the reason One Piece didn't become popular? I mean from what I remember people on there tended to bash it while holding Naruto up as the next DBZ.
-
I actually started with the admitably terrible dub
but the idea was so cool that I read the manga and loved it
Btw: people who like bleach more than One Piece are stupid people.
There is no arguing that point

Samurai Ninja Ronin With Giant Eyeballs and Sakura Blossoms Everywhere
I'm going to register this with the copyright people if you haven't already.

@_Meh_:
I'm going to register this with the copyright people if you haven't already.
You probably can't copyright it; it's too short of a phrase. And my original post will make filing a trademark claim difficult.
It should feature a really badly mary-sue/gary-stu character who should be self-insertion fodder for every fangirl.

and his name should be Sasuke.

Just out of spite, his Ultimate-Overdrive-Hyper-Ninja-Samurai-God-Mecha will be called Glossy Black.

That's what I heard. The guy's opinion was all people had of One Piece and soon people started to view it as the truth about the series.
-
One site (which is a fansite too, right?) determined OP's fate?
Yeah, sounds about right.
