So, I've watched it. And, speaking as someone who hasn't seen much of the arc besides bits of what 4Kids put out, the movie at least gets me interested to see what I'm missing. Much of what I've been thinking has already been said, so all I can say is that, once and for all, I'm SO glad Funi's taking care of the series now!

Bought the DVD today at Best Buy, the sticker said $21.99 but they sold me it for $17.99 (including tax).
Pros:
Voices: Pretty much all of them.
Animation.
Zoro's fight.Cons:
Voices: Crocodile (sounded too much like he just ate a bunch of glass).
Zorro.
Basically everything said before.I enjoyed it, but this probably largely has to do with the fact my expectations were sooo damn low with how I've heard about this movie and then seeing it for the first time.
Best line of the movie:

Got the movie last week, just haven't had time to post about it.
Overall, the voices were all amazing. At times Crocodile sounded the same as in the Japanese version.
Oh and Chris Sabat trying to sound gay was fucking hilarious.

Luffy and Zoro's were fine (but the subs used translated names, which sucks.)
Nami, Sanji, and Usopp were all great.

WTF was up with those credits? Zoro was misspelled both times. Koza was spelled two different ways. Karu was left uncapitalized. Sometimes 4Kids names were left in (even if they contradicted the movie itself), sometimes they weren't. Did ANYBODY even look over this thing before it was sent out? I've never seen so many mistakes in a credits list.They spelled Zoro 'Zorro' for the Japanese portion of the credits for crying out loud. How does that happen?

I pay good money for a fully translated anime DVD, so I'd damn well better get an accurate translation, not a load of Japanese words left in.
I agree with you about the credits, that part of the DVD reeks of lazyness. But I can deal with it since I'll never watch through them.
I loved the Movie 8 DVD overall, and I can't wait to buy more One Piece TV & Movie DVDs.

That's why. It's a translation from japanese, so if they CAN translate it, they should. (Or, not stuff like the Tenkaichi Budokai in Dragonball, which translates to something like "The Number One Gathering of Fighters Under the Heavens", which is far too long to write in the subs all the time. If it's something like that, then they should just leave it in japanese.)

When it comes to other countries, One Piece is a Japanese show and the author wrote it intended for a Japanese audience. If Robin is speaking Spanish in a Spanish country, lucky them. The rest of the Japaense is translated UNLESS the author intended this foreign language so they leave the French assuming they're a decent company.
As for being a Japanese anime, yes it is a Japanese anime which is being translated to a Western audience who are paying money to understand and enjoy their entertainment. If it's a Japanese anime, we might as well leave nakama or Oi or baka untranslated. From Zoro's past, it was clear that his fighting style was Japanese. His own wtf three sword kenjutsu style. This is why Zoro's attacks should stay in Japanese.

By the way, one thing I just remembered: I heard that FUNi's DVD of the movie only had one video-track, does that mean that the original japanese title-screen and logo isn't in there at all? It's not that important, but I like the original logo a lot better than FUNi's…

Zoro's attacks are in Japanese because he's a student of Japanese swordsmanship. His background, his training methods, his attacks, his weapons are all taken directly from Japanese culture. Most of them are Japanese puns for crying out loud.
This is no different than Sanji. Sanji's attacks are in French because he's a student of French cuisane. Where Zoro's Japanese background is reflected in Japanese names for his attacks, Sanji's European background is reflected in French.

Oh yeah. I can see why they did it. It's an unconditional policy. It's easier to just blindly translate everything than to stop and think about what they're doing on a case by case basis.
And just like every other policy of this sort (Zero Tolerance, Blanket Statements) it's a bad idea. It trades rational thought for speed and ease. It's faster and easier to translate everything than to look at each individual case and see if it should be translated.
"All Japanese should be translated" is a blanket statement. Now ask yourself, when's the last time a blanket statement was ever a good idea?

I just watched the DVD today. The animation for the most part is great, the voice acting was fun. The lack of any special features really hurt my idea of the DVD. It's over $20, it better have some special features. The closest thing to it was Trailers, and none of them were any good… the One Piece Box Set Trailer was a Splash Page on the DVD.
The movie made me laugh alot. "But your captions said I hit dead on!"

Have any of you fellow Canadian fans had any success finding it in any particular store?

I got mine for $15 at Best Buy.
This isn't my favorite of the One Piece movies, but I can't deny that it wasn't the worst either. Hearing what Vivi sounds like with emotion is so refreshing after having to hear her awful 4Kids voice for so long.
Most of the new voices were unbelievable, especially Bon Clay. Stephanie Young does a great job with "Evil" Robin when she's Miss All Sunday. And that bit when she's yelling at Luffy to let her die is making me look forward to her emotional side that we see in Enies Lobby.

I just watched the Movie with my brother I really enjoyed it. I really like the enthusiasm the Funi voice actors put into the movie. It may not be the bes One Piece Movie but its not the worst either. My Brother though was angry and pissed off about somethings. (Like How Pell is not dead, Why Crocodile didnt smash Luffy earlier, and why didnt Zoro die of Blood loss.) If you can help me come up with something to tell him I will be happy. Overall for a Abridged Alabasta movie it was fun when Funi was involved.

I really don't mind them not translating Zoro's attacks. You really could go either way with them, English or Japanese. It's not like Americans would get the Japanese puns and it's not like Sanji and Robin's attacks which Oda originally intended to be in French and Spanish.
