I still think Awes sounds awesome.
Don't break your spine over them, Greg. You did your best.

You might consider I'm somewhat at wit's end considering I've been very nice about it for 6 months. Please don't speak about the situation in such a way unless you actually know the details.
No no no >_<
It has never been confirmed as anything beyond NOT being Oz unless Oda decides to do so for some stylistic random reason.
The final spelling will and should NOT be Odz. I don't even agree with Odz as something that should be an official spelling. It's never been about that it absolutely IS one thing or another, just that it is NOT Oz as that is an allusion to something completely different than the base design and inspiration for the character. Not to mention it ignores the actual pronunciation in both Japanese AND English. I'm not going into it again. You will find a plethora of data on the topic by using the search function including posts in the Name thread with all of the reasoning and proof with pretty pictures to boot. I just…no...I have nothing left to say. It just baffles the mind. Perhaps if I called every member that called him Oz by random-ass names I pulled out of a hat that have nothing to do with what their username is....no....fruitless. All analogies and explanations are lost.
There is no God.
I feel your pain. I guess you feel like how i feel when people right Ruffy. May i ask one question which is a reason subject of confusion for me. Is his name phonetically pronounced Oz or not?

I've been calling him Orz, simply because of how it's written in katakana オーズ (Oozu in romaji i believe). Generally, when there's a ー following a katakana character, you have an elongated or stretched pronounciation. Orz has been my personal preference so far. I've been hoping we would have seen his name written somewhere by Oda, but just like with Lucci "Rucchi", we may not get an official spelling from Oda.

Quality post. It's now officially Orz as your argument is grounded and supported.
I want to believe.
@Kidany:
About the shortening lifespan thing. I honestly think it was just said to raise tension during that situation. I highly doubt it'll really shorten Luffy's life.
Thank you.
I get the feeling that some people here don't quite grasp the idea that the 'life shortening' effects of Gear 2 are an attempt to raise dramatic tension as well as insure that he doesn't consistently run around in Gear 2 and make short work of enemies.
The problem is that it's almost impossible to keep both the pronunciation and the name meaning when translating it to English. Yeah, his name in Japanese is the word for the Norse god Óðr, that much is certain. Keeping that reference in English is hard though, since most people likely don't know that Óðr/Odr/Odz is meant to be pronounced "Ohz".
Perhaps if I called every member that called him Oz by random-ass names I pulled out of a hat that have nothing to do with what their username is….no....fruitless.
If there is absolutely no relation, how do you realize people are talking about that character? Perhaps because there is a clear and understandable relation that even you clearly see whether you admit it or not.
If you started calling people random names that have no relation to their username then the problem you create is one of miscommunication. If you start calling them by names that are slight modifications of their normal usernames then communication is still upheld and there is nothing wrong with that.
Your inability to accept other people's preferences is idiotic.

What preferences? It was already showed that "Oz" in Japanese has a different spelling than the one used to Oda's character.
Is that difficult to add a 'd' in the middle of his name?

Ummm, who is writing Oz in Japanese? I distinctly remember posting in english a few moments ago. And in English, Oz is very similar to Odz and well Odz sounds like crap. So I prefer to write Oz. Not because I am claiming that Oz has specific impact on the meaning of the character in the story, just because I prefer Oz.
Now the real question here is this one: Is it that difficult to accept other people's opinions on things? Especially when they aren't trying to change how you spell something.

I know that it should be Greg to answer this, but read this post:

If you had noticed in Wikipedia, a certain member still insists in use the name "Oz", even despite that was showed to him/her several times the explanation and origin of the character's name.

Yeah that has nothing to do with my post.

And you can hardly expect quality from wikipedia. You gotta stop complaining about this. You don't need to show the whole world you are right. Because in your crusade to spread your truth you are also stomping all over people who just don't care about its exact spelling because we are a language removed from the medium. Why should I be typing Odz when that has no importance in English and sounds retarded as well. I might as well pick something that doesn't sound retarded yet still communicates to the same general concept. I am not personally thinking of the wizard of Oz when I talk about one piece.
Anyway, this is entering the realm of repetition and thus having thoroughly reiterated my thoughts on the matter I am gonna wait for some one piece spoilers. There is one piece this week right. Please god give me one piece.

No offense but I think you're taking the discussion too, err…
I'm just saying that "Oz" is not the correct translation for his name in English. About your opinion, I don't know. But it seemed that you were giving importance when you called those that were discussing his name of noobs.
Hey, Battle franky, did your team messed up intentionally with the colored credit page at the beginning of your scans or did some japanese animator (dunno if it's not manga) intentionally drew Mizu/Kiwi topless? :S
Seriously, what is up with all the "Oz/Odz/Odr"-arguing here? I mean, I don't seem to recall seeing people get bashed for saying Ruffy, Rucchi, or… Corby? (<-Coby's name in the german manga... I think.) Honestly, this is even worse than the Alabasta/Arabasta-arguement. At least that one has some solid proof for both, whereas this is just a bunch of random theories, with no undeniable way to prove eiter of them.

First of,Oz sounds better. You cant convince me otherwise.SECOND-Oda never said WHERE he got it from to all of my knowledge,so an "explanation and origin of the characters name" is utterly imposible to be given by anyone else then Oda.
First of,Oz sounds better.
Lol, nobody ever said that it sounds other then Oz (you´ll see it when the anime comes). It´s how you write it down that is object of discussion. ;)

not gonna click it.Greg,I dont wanna argue, its just that I THINK (and im not alone) that Oz (O-z or OH-z) sounds better then Odz .

Why do you take the whole Oz naming thing so personally Greg? Does it really matter that much? Take it easy! This is the silliest thing to argue about. :)
Personally, I too just feel like calling him Oz.
You're all wrong! Oddz is the best way to call that oddball of dead flesh.
But anyways, after SHADOW ASGARD, it would be hard to believe that people would call him Oz for any other reason than the name Oz "sounding better", so as long as they know that the name's Odr, there's no need to waste your time arguing, Greg.

Ah, something new.
In this event, no one is 'wrong'.
In choosing to call him Oddz you're acknowledging the origin, having fun with the spelling, not blatantly ignoring how the origin's name is pronounced in either Japanese or English, and furthermore, this spelling hasn't been proven wrong while fitting the above criteria.
Calling him Oddz is perfectly reasonable since none of us know. As is Orz or Awes or nicknames like Oggy, etc. They're not calling him something that simply and clearly is not his name.
@Leaf Cable: Are you incessantly joyous all the time? You always seem to have a positive outlook in your posts.
And, personally, I prefer Odz.
I'll change my pronunciation accordingly if the anime sounds any different.
Grer,I am NOT gonna click it.No thread can change my opininon that it SOUNDS better.
So I think that, according to your views, I'm not a lazy ass because Oddz actually has one letter more than Odr…
Thanks for making me feel better today.
@Sanctum: There's already enough petty fighting that goes on here. I'd rather not take stupid things like Oz seriously. I'm actually a negative person is real life, but at the same time I try to roll with the punches. Plus Arlong Park is the last place I want to take things seriously/personally at. That's all. :)
@Greg: Let it go man. There's no point in getting worked up over Oz. OZ. OZ!!! :D
Grer,I am NOT gonna click it.No thread can change my opininon that it SOUNDS better.

You do not fucking realize how funny this is since you continue to prove the point linked EVERY single time you post, each stronger than the last.
So I think that, according to your views, I'm not a lazy ass because Oddz actually has one letter more than Odr…
Kaimei, I believe I've told you this before, but there's nothing incorrect, misinformed and certainly not lazy about your naming choice. It makes sense and you should use it since:
1. It fits certain criteria.
2. You also happen to like it and an official name has not been established.
Again,my opinion cant be changed by no thread, may it ridicule me/my opinions in any way.Except when linking Oz to pedophilia,I cant realy see it loosing the catchines for me.
@Greg: I read your link, and you're right. Technically, he is Odr. However, he'll always be Oz to me. :)
Leaf Cable:Ditto

Seriously!!!??? Where's Candid Camera! You simply can't say stuff THIS good unless it's scripted! Your refusal to read the thread to see what I'm getting at and your replies just keep making my point in the last half of that post stronger and stronger! This is fantastic!
More like homolover
@Greg: Fine, he's Odr. Can we move on now? :)
P.S. Have you ever read the Wizard of Oz? It's all about Oz. Oz is a cool name. XD
not gonna click it.Greg,I dont wanna argue, its just that I THINK (and im not alone) that Oz (O-z or OH-z) sounds better then Odz .
I think you're failing to understand that Odz/Odr/etc would still be pronounced OH-z.
I'm not saying Greg is wrong. I'm just kidding around! I do think Oz sounds better, but I accept the fact that he's indeed Odr. I just like calling him Oz for the sake of forum disccusions though. Is that so wrong? I'm not even flaming anybody!
I think you're failing to understand that Odz/Odr/etc would still be pronounced OH-z.
No, not even what I'm trying to get him to see/read.
Okay, it's just cruel to keep it going like this. I'll just take the easy route and copy the text.
I cannot believe this has come to this point. Well actually, yes I can.
That's because in looking around posts all I can see is:
"I like it this way."
"I'd rather use…."
"I think this is best because…."
Lot of i's there. All based on what? What you think sounds best. I'm not suggesting for a moment any one person here knows better than another when it comes to an official spelling. Just that you all seem to be choosing what you like based on preference over facts and what's realistic. I don't care enough to stalk your posts and see if you've ever once criticized an edit to Japanese animation, but if you have, shame on you. You're doing the exact same thing and with even less justifiable reasons. Edits are made for legal and promotional reasons, ie. things that matter in a grown-up world. Your changes are based on selfish choices.
I hope you can share in my merriment reading Lobo's posts, each one more emphatic than the last, 'I think it sounds better!', 'I can't see it losing its catchiness for me'.

Wow, even after I spelled it out. Thank you for proving the point. Case closed.
Come on, Lobolover. Just read Greg's link. I did it and everything is fine. He's just pointing out why his name really is Odr. In end, none of this will matter once Thriller Bark has ended. Right?
I prefer to be left in ilusion, when its good, rather then in truth, when its ugly.
How can you argue which English equivalent is better when you can't even type in English yourself

Ignorance is Power!
Whatever, what suits you the best, Lobolover.

sneaky and crouch kicking again Carter? If I couldnt, then
! antidisestablishmentarianism THIS!
@Lobolover: It's like Mark Twain once said: "If ignorance was bliss, this world would be a much happier place.". I don't care if you call him Oz, but at least read the relevant information on Norse mythology that Greg provided. Perhaps you'll change your mind!

Really, just skip all the stuff on Greg's post and read the chapter of the last week….
Never!Hit me,bite me,force me to do a gynecological examination of a 100 year old MAN, you WONT BREAK MY RESOLUTION!
@Kaimei-Karasuhebi:

I skimmed the chapter and I didn't see anything that would change his opinion. Anyway, Greg, just give up. Lobolover's just too stubborn to call him anything but Oz. Nothing's gonna change his mind obviously. Not unless Oda writes the name in English somewhere.
im not "stubborn",i am "resolute"!
