I recommend 1927's silent movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang as the greatest movie ever created. It's the most inspiring film I've ever seen, and it inspired directors over decades - "Metoroporisu" by Osamu Tezuka, for example, or the showdown from "Batman" by Tim Burton, is an 1:1 adaption of the final fight from "Metropolis".
"Metropolis" tells the story of a futuristic city, where the rich people live in the roof gardens, while the poor workers live a pennyless, hopeless existence in the depths of the catacombs. Freder, son of Joh Fredersen, ruler of the city, falls in the love with the beautiful girl Maria from the undercity. Freder exchanges places with the worker 11811, while the mad scientist Rotwang creates a robot double of Maria to start a rebellion beneath the workers. The quintessence is there can be no understanding between the hands and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator.
The movies has great moments, the sets are just marvelous and the special effects are perfects, you won't believe the movie is from the 20's. There are some really great scenes, as the Babel dance in the nightclub, the flood and of course my favorite sentence from the whole movie, spoken by Fritz Rasp who plays the mindless executor of Fredersen, who has a great mental change during the story.
Also, for other great silent movies, check out Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens (aka "Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror", "Nosferatu the Vampire", "Nosferatu: The First Vampire" or "Nosferatu, a Symphony of Terror"), which has incredible special effects, too, and the creepiest villain in movie history.
And watch Le voyage dans la lune by Georges Méliès, an odd short film about a bunch of astronomers who travel to the moon (since the movie's from 1902, they're just equipped with umbrellas, screw the non-existent oxygen) and meet the Selenites, a civilization of aggressive ant men. Méliès was a wizard and used hidden trapdoors, pyrotechnique and a lot of other tricks to create masterpiece special effects.
Though, I still can't imagine how he did the SE with the umbrella that transforms into a mushroom.
Salò, or The 120 Days of Sodom (Italy/France, 1975, Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini)
Good heavens, I warn people to be careful with this movie… It can give you traumatic memories.
What? That there's grade A action movies
I didn't see Demolition Man, but Judge Dreed is far away of be a grade A movie.

To each his own.
The Big Lebowski. one of the funniest movies iv´e seen
Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Fucking epic.
^ Nearly everyone seen that movie (if not, I have no idea where you came from)
Anyway, this day I recommend some scifi movies. One of them is the aliens series (but mainly the 1st and 2nd ones), they're very scary, probably even the scaryiest movies ever. The 2nd one is The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), its old but its pretty good. The last one is Planet of the Apes (the original of course), pretty awesome movie, it have Charleston Heston in it, who is a very great actor (he's 83 yrs old, and he was in Ben-Hur)
Silver Hawk. It's a action/martial arts/superhero movie staring Michelle Yeoh. I just saw it on the MoviePlex channel and quite enjoyed it. No, it's not the best martial arts movie around, and it's definitely no great superhero movie. But it's a fun watch, and if you don't dive in expecting an epic feature then you'll probably enjoy it as well.
I was really confused with the language…why? Cause here it was a Cantonese movie but the English was too good..definitely no dub. Turns out it was filmed back to back in Cantonese and English...I'm not exactly sure how that works, but it was great. You don't get to see many films like this without a rough English dub.
Final Verdict: Recommended on the basis of fun.
The Frighteners. I saw this movie plenty as a kid and loved it, and just now got to see it again after so long on AMC. It was basically like a new experience again, and loved it. I'm sure most people have seen this movie at least once, if not I think you're in for a treat. Hell, just like me if you haven't seen it in a while you definitely should.
I suppose it's regarded as a horror film, but that's not accurate. There's no scares in it, and the visuals are great but nothing that will make you sick. It's a paranormal movie, with some comedy and thriller mixed in. Micheal J. Fox was great in the film, and seeing such films as this disappoints me that he's no longer in films.
Final Verdict: Recommended on the basis of a good ol' time.
I'm interested in a court drama. Preferably older movies since they've been better(?) but if there's a good modern court drama, please tell me.
Also, I've already seen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Inherent the Wind, and Fracture. Thanks, ya'll.
Looking for a good psychological movie other than Memento or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Any recommendations? Nothing gory please.
Now, some people may not like this as I know the film has a lot of hate. But I saw it for the first time yesterday and….quite enjoyed it.
The live action adaption of Street Fighter. I never really played the SF games in the past or anything, so I didn't go into this with that in my mind. I also went into it with the thought "this movie is gonna suck balls, but I'm bored" cause of a member comment on here the other day, and the fact it was a adaption of a game.
But what I got, least in my opinion, was a unique comedy film. It wasn't it was so lame it was funny either, that's just how I saw the film. And I just enjoyed it. The one thing that made me enjoy it most was Raúl Juliá as M. Bison. I wasn't familiar with the guy before, yet he was familiar to me (maybe the addams family as a kid), but I loved his look, his voice, acting, and everything.
He had some great quotes in the movie too. I was quite saddened to find out he passed away soon after completing this film cause I quite fell in love with the guy. I enjoyed the film quite nicely, and wondering how the 2008 one is gonna be. I'm interested in playing the games now…just gotta find a good torrent with them.
[Face Palm]
Just a side note all the movies based on Street Fighter sans the first animated movie sucked ass, it doesn't help that another live action movie is being planned that's supposedly going to revolve around Chun-Li.
Anyway
Like I said, I know many people would disagree with me. But I enjoyed the movie for what is was worth so thus, I recommended it.
id recommend basicly anything made by Paul Verhoeven, everything from total recall to starship troopers (1 only, 2 was pure garbage)
He had some great quotes in the movie too.

Well if your going to recommend that I guess I gotta Recommend
Mortal Kombat (the 1st movie) you can watch the 2nd if you want
but I prefer the latter.
Lionheart. A Jean-Claude Van Damme movie I just saw on USA. I just sat down bored wasn't planning on staying but I actually liked it and stayed. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a French Foreign Legion solider who goes AWOL upon hearing his brother is at deaths door back in the US.
Upon getting their in the usual muscle way he deluges into no holds barred bare-knuckle underground fights in order to help his brother's wife and daughter get a better life. Quite an entertaining movie. If you like bare-knuckle fighting, this movie should be right up your alley.
Time to revive this thread. I'm pretty sure some of the must have been mentioned before.
I recommend most films by Michel Gondry, especially for his uses of mise en scene:
-Science of Sleep, Eternal Sunshine, Be Kind Rewind
and Judd Apatow for kicks:
-Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, and Funny People (July release)
Other quick favourites:
-Blow, 28 Days Later, Wristcutters
And if you want a wake up call documentary then go with Militainment Inc.
Also, apparently Donnie Darko has a sequel "S. Darko" and it'll be released May 12th.
If anyone's interested in an action movie with some extreme violence, I recommend Punisher War Zone. The plot may not be the best but the action makes up for it.
First, those who recommended "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" are awesome. I'm not usually a movie-buyer, but that one's got a special spot on my shelf. Probably my favorite Jim Carrey movie, period. Same goes for Wizards, which I watch whenever it's on TV.
Lessee here, some of my picks (links go to Wiki-pages, which have spoilers so avoid the Plot section):
Heavy Metal:
It'd surprise me if most AFers haven't seen this already. Animated, but very much NOT for the kiddies. You've got several short stories, all totally different, but connected through an evil entity, an orb known as the Loc-Nar. Contains…pretty much everything most movies have warnings for. XD;; But it's genuinely entertaining, and the stories are good and diverse. AVOID the sequel, Heavy Metal 2000, BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY.
Ever After:
My favorite Fairy Tale movie ever, a more 'realistic'/'female empowering' version of Cinderella, with a strong-willed young woman played by Drew Barrymore (don't be turned off by this, Drew-haters) living under the thumb of evil stepmother Angelica Houston (I ADORE this woman), until a chance encounter changes everything. No talking animals, pumpkin-coaches or fairy godmother, but we do get Leonardo-freakin'-daVinci being awesome.
Run Lola Run
One of the best things my first year of college ever did was introduce me to this film. German movie w/ English Subs, 80 minutes of pure thrilling adrenaline, focusing on how small moments can change the big picture in the end. Awesome music too.
Nerdy comedies- Fanboys. Awesome movie.
Catch me if you can
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Tom Hanks
True Story about Frank Abegnale Junior, who was a fraudster & wrote fake checques, also changing his identity many times & posing as people he isn't.
Now, you're probably reading this thinking, oh, It'll be crap, but TRUST ME, it is a great film, And I'm not the kind of guy who usually enjoys films this well, or even reccommends them. But, for this, I literally couldn't turn the channel, I watched it right through, and enjoyed it, some parts left me in awe, it was amazing, honestly.
The film was made by Spielburg
Here's a Quick Plot-Outline
Contains Spoilers

Now Free, Frank works their, but is unhappy, he goes to pose as a Pilot again & Carl confronts him at the airport, saying he can do what he likes because this time nobody is chasing him.
! Frank turns up at work the next day & he and Carl remain good friends.
It's not exactly a movie, but if anyone ever gets a hankering for some old fashion espionage storytelling, see if you can find the 1979 BBC miniseries Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Alec Guiness as George Smiley, a retired intelligence agent who is called back into service to help smoke out a mole within the British Secret Intelligence Service. It's a pretty interesting story, adapted from a book by John le Carre.
There's a sequel miniseries, also staring Guiness, called Smiley's People, but I did not enjoy it quite as much for some reason.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Best story ever. I kid you not, this is definitely one of the greatest films of all time.
British crime film with that signature Guy Ritchie-esque style.
Portugese crime drama film about the kids and violence among the lower class in Rio de Janeiro. Beautiful, captivating and ironic all at the same time. Simply epic.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Although a lot of people disagreed with the ending, I found this film sexy and brilliantly amusing. It reminded me a bit of Y tu mamá también, somehow.
These are just off the top of my head… There's much more that I love, but these should do for now ;)
Apparently this new, Angels & Demons is good,
don't really want to see it, but I've heard great things about it
Mystery men 1999
Superhero parody that doesnt take itself to seriously and has some pretty damn good acting for it's time and cast. Definetly a watch if you like superhero flicks and have some time on your hands. It's kinda like the excat opposite of watchmen XD

Saw it a few years back and LOVED it
I reccomend 'Cats Don't Dance'. It's a cartoon but I'll be damned if it isn't my favorite movie.
Definately a good watch
I'll recommend the new Star Trek movie in theaters, it's epic! Kirk is a badass, and Sylar makes a pretty mean Spock, oh yeah.

City of God is actually Brazilian. The language they speak is Portuguese, but only because that's what they speak in Brazil.

Lol sorry, typo! It is in Rio de Janeiro xP
It's a fantastic movie though, somewhat similar in format to Pulp Fiction or a Guy Richie film, though more akin to the latter. Definitely a more emotionally stirring member of this family of films and it also has deeper characters and a better story. No, the terribly high level of entertainment you get from a Guy Richie film is not completely found here but it makes up for it. Now I'm wondering why I like Lock Stock and Snatch better XD
You mean City of God?
I thought it was totally different, especially with its dramatic content. It's more drama than crime, but enough crime to drive you to the edge of your seat. Though I think that's exactly the kind of thing that makes it so appealing - because both the drama and the violence are so raw and human. I freaking love that movie :D
It's definitely more grounded than any Quentin Tarantino movie, and Guy Ritchie always maintains to layer that ironic British humour into his films, and I think that's what makes it a signature entertainment tool for most, if not all, of his films. :P
Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Fucking epic.
the fuck?
what an awful post
i don't even remember this shit
Fluppy Dogs
Go find that b*tch
Some of the movies I've enjoyed watching the most:
Tropic Thunder
Life is Beautiful
Pan's Labyrinth
The Iron Giant
War
Eastern Promises
Casino Royale
A few good men-If you ever found yourself wondering how Tom Cruise ever got to be so famous, then watch this and be enlightend
Groundhog day-A superbly warm comedy that makes perfect use of Murrays wit, Quite possibly my favorite Bill Murray film and thats saying alot!
Tommy boy- The greatest comedy duo of all time at their peak, kinda depressing really to know that you will never ever in your life time see two comedic actors who complete each other as well as Spade and Farley. (Well possibly Fry & Laurie.)
Akira Kurosawas Yojimbo-Might not a movie for everyone but if you can get past the black & white color, the language and can sit through a virtualy action-less movie then an absolutly wonderful story will unfurl before you eyes. And great charaterization, deceptivly simple yet intriguing story and perfect pacing will be your reward.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

Hmm, I forgot to add this one:
Pleasantville (1998).
Starring Tobey McGuire, Reese Witherspoon, Joan Allen Jeff Daniels, and William H. Macy.
I guess the best way to describe this movie is that it's serious undertones, but doesn't take itself seriously. From Rotten Tomatoes (which gives it an 86% Fresh Rating):
Two modern American teenagers are sucked into their television set and end up living in a black-and-white fifties sitcom. Eventually, however, they begin to question their influence, wondering if their advanced 90's attitudes are really that much better than those of the innocent past. Sterling effects and stand-out performances make this commentary on modern life a poignant, entertaining effort.
A favorite from the 90's, one I really should try to find on DVD. >_>
