my first impressions of one piece were "damn this anime sucks, its boring and it has a dragonballesque artstyle but worse"
i only watched upto episode 10 and then i quit
then later i got bored and watched a bit more and i was hooked on it by the time they got to the arlong arc
after i watched what KF had put out i read the manga and it became my 2nd favorite series after hajime no ippo

It started when Carlsen Comics advertised for it in Dragon Ball. They showed two sample pages. I didn't feel it was good or bad. I went and bought the first volume.
From the very moment Shanks made fun of Luffy, I was stuck for it. :lol:
I had downloaded like 30 MB of the first ep once from some obscure source.. and I checked it out, and it just looked like a real fun show, and I loved it from the start even though I didn't see much. (was only a few minutes)
So I started collecting it.. went kinda slow til I found all eps on a 500 kB/s FTP on ricedanime. So I downloaded all available eps at that time 1-135 or so. And I started watching them.. pretty much all in a few days non-stop :D It even exceeded my expectations once it hit the Arabasta arc!
I thought it was sorta lame at first,but when I played GB2,it got me hooked.
Before i watched the series I always heard good things about One Piece so i decided to watch the first few episodes. To my suprise One Piece was awesome and so dam funny. The drawing was a little odd at first but i guess it matches the odd nature of the anime, hehe rubberman.
It gets 50times better when they get into the GrandLine :P

Hey, this is a thread to discuss your first impression of One Piece… yano, like how you first discovered it, what you thought about it when you first saw what it looked like, etc...
I heard about it from a friend, who said it was it was the worst anime ever and called it "One Piece of shit" (mind you, he called it this before that little flash animation by TVskyle was made called "One Piece of Crap") Now, I had never heard of One Piece in my life, but becuase I trusted him, (Since he introduced me to Naruto which I was in love with at the time) I felt I had to take his word for it.
Then when I started collecting Shonen Jump, I read everything except One Piece, I thought I shouldn't bother with it becuase of how much he said it sucked... but then one day, I was bored, picked up my Shonen Jump, and decided to read One Piece for once, it was the arc where Sanji first appeared...
and let me say, I fell in love with Sanji's character, his whole "I'm a chef, my job is to cook, not to judge" attitude really got me interested... after that, I started watching the anime, and right after the Arlong arc I was hooked

The first time I heard of One Piece was in Kyle's "One Piece… Of Crap" animation (Which is funny, because I saw it, forgot about it, then became reintroduced with the guy a few years later when I became friends with a girl who totally had the hots for him. Now I have a weird habit of running into him all over the internet.). That was a great animation.
About a million years later, I happened to meet Carter and Zio, among others, in an IRC channel and they would occasionally chatter about it. I wasn't all that much into anime (Except for Lupin III), so I checked it out and immediately thought that the art style was totally awesome.
So when I actually saw the source material and eventually understood the point of OPoC, I was pretty much drawn in by the art. I'd say that the artwork of One Piece is a lot of what's kept me interested.
I think that there's already a fairly recent, very similar thread to this here. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the way this thread is going is a lot like what was being discussed in that other thread.

Yes, but that's about what got them HOOKED, not how they first discovered it, also, that's mainly for the anime, this thread applies to both the anime and the manga

Honestly: gay. I saw a picture of it when I went to Japan a long time ago and it looked dumb. Especially Chopper.
I knew it was there but never actually did anything with it. I can't remember not liking One Piece, but I was well aware of Luffy's rubber powers an Zoro's 3 sword style. I can't remember though. Even though it was only 2 years ago, my memory's completely hazy.
I started out reading Stephen's script because I didn't know how to get the manga or the anime at the time, but I saw the color spreads and I wanted to read it.
Then my Japanese grandmother finally sent 20 volumes upon request…And I just LOVED it.
I never really thought it was dumb because I read the whole thing only in text to Skypea Arc in the first place, THEN read the manga- THEN watched the Anime.
Really strange...
I hate to say it but my first introduction to One Piece was the 4kids version of the show.. If I remember correctly the first episode I saw was the one where Ussop is running away from that Merman… Can't really remember.. It didn't leave much of an impression on me, though I still would tune in every once in awhile if nothing else was on.. It took me another year or so to even touch the uncut series..
I 1st saw One piece on 4kids and the 1st episode I saw was Episode 2/3 when Zolo/Zoro debuted. at 1st I thought the show was chessy but I thought this show has a swordsman with a demonic kind of personality( 1st time I saw the character,I thought Zolo.Zoro was a villian) and liked the show then I lost intrest at the Buggy Arc because as usual,it was cheesy. Each arc either made me lose intrest or made me watch the show.It took me 3 months to find out there was another version and starting watching the other series instead XD
To tell you the truth… I loved it ever since I first saw it... Which was the 4Kids dub on Tonnami. ^^;

My first impression - the art isn't what I liked. My friend recommended it to me, but I put it off for another couple of hours until I had absolutely no other things to read and I was dead bored. Then I started to read, and hooked. Soon enough, I started to translate it, too :ninja:

Seriously though, it was definitely love at first sight for me. I'll admit that it took me a little while to get used to the art, but after only a few volumes I really started to appreciate it. Now I'm absolutely hooked, and I have been for years.

First thing I saw was the promo on Toonami. It was "Weird, he said they were pirates, so why is he able to stretch?"(in other words, why is there something magical in a pirate anime).
Thought it was interesting enough so I watched the first two dubbed on Toonami… started downloading after that...then the manga. Hooked from the beggining apparently.
When I first saw One Piece, I hated it so badly. I thought anime was just
the crazy shiny-eyed peoples with huge heads, and I thought Luffy's rubber
powers sucked.
But then, I saw the light.
I don't remember exactly, I've been reading OP for 8 years now, so it's not that clear in my mind. The only thing I remember is I thought the art was hideous and Buggy was all kinds of awesome. I also had a drop in interest from vol 3 to vol 11 roughly and I really don't know why I kept on reading then… I don't regret it today.
Well i saw half a episode of the dub version and I thought it was a horrible show.so I lost interest quick.but then somone told me the manga was different. from the first few chaps I thought hey this manga is okay.But to tell you the truth,These two pages single handely made me continue reading the series.
After a while it became my favorite manga

I saw the dub and thought it was cool. Then I went onto Wikipedia and saw how the dub screwed up things and all those weird guys like that dude with a curly eyebrow or that big, blue-haired guy.
One of the best days of my life.
1st thing I ever saw was a Whiskey Peak episode on Canadian TV, and I couldn't stand it, then I noticed my university roomate watching it (subs), and he told me the the versions were quite different so I began watching
All the villains were awesome but it was Baratie that hooked me.
I saw an ad for it in the back of one of my RuroKen, I thought Usopp was a woman. No idea why, it was the cover of Volume 4. And after that I never heard of it again until I became addicted.
I was reading the 3rd issue of american Shonen Jump (which I bought for DBZ), I eventually read it through…

When I first learned what Luffy's power was, I immideatly prepared myself to hate OP.
Its funny because I thought luffy's powers were lame also.Sorta like mr fantstic (whom I hate) But then Ive grown to like him and his powers alot.He eventually became one of my favorites.He's like the opposite of mr fantastic
My first impression when I saw One Piece in a Pokemon magazine about 5 years ago:
Luffy: Holy CRAP, no one can stretch their face– ...oh, wait. He's made of RUBBER? Weirdo.
Zoro: Rip-off of Zorro.
Nami: Weird name.
Sanji: Is that a man or a woman..? (They chose a really bad picture for him.)

And the summary that they wrote confused me to no end. So I looked it up on Google later that day and slowly gained a liking to it. The End.
At the first time I saw One Piece, it reminded me The Tick (seriously), due of the absurd situations and characters with bizarre design.
I first saw a picture of it in my school library, it had Luffy and Chopper on it, and I thought, "huh….weird" than I saw the anime being advertised, so I decided to check it out, so long story short, I started with the crappy dub version, then I found the Japanese version, then the manga, now I love it

I was addicted to Naruto at the time, then I saw a One Piece poster and wanted to watch it because i LOVE pirates. But my friend told me it was stupid so I didn't bother with it until a couple month later when I caught up with Naruto and got bored so I downloaded a couple of the first episodes. At first I was like this anime is ok but around when buggy came along I started to get hooked and now its my favorite anime.
I think my first exposure to it was from an old SJ my sister had lying around with a chapter involving what I later found out was the fight between Nami and Ms. Doublefinger. I thought it was weird and didn't really think much of it again until the manga started getting released here in America. At this point, I actually found the art style appealing so I picked up the first volume, read it, and fell in love pretty much. I was like, "Now this is a shonen manga! A real adventure!" and Oda's sense of humor really caught on with me I guess.
After that I would read each volume as it came out but I felt very behind the majority of the fandom, so I began watching the anime at the worst possible time, the week before all my senior exams. Once again, love at first sight, so I ended up watching the whole thing through the most recent ep only stopping to sleep, eat, and attend school. Shameful but true.
I hated all anime and manga at the time but when i first read OP in some Jump mags I found, I thought "this guy (Luffy) is a fucking idiot" :)
Well when I saw a commercial for it on 4kids tv I thought it was Bad but when aired om Toonami I saw an episode and I was Hooked.
I first saw the anime (4Kids of course) in the Kuro arc. I thought Usopp looked really stupid and the episode didn't even have much of the other crew members so I didn't like it. Then I watched it again in the Arlong arc and I thought it was much better.
It looked like every other anime to me when I first heard about it. The first ep I saw was the dub of the first Kuro arc ep. I thought it was really weird and couldn't stand Usopp's voice at all. The first time I had ever seen anything of One Piece was a while ago… I saw some Japanese trailer for one of the movies, I think. At the time I didn't know what it was or what to think about it, since I had no idea what was going on.

For the longest time, I thought I was the only one that did, because I'd always hear people talking about how ugly and horrible it is. I've always liked it because it has a cartoon quality to it.

Like 3 or 4 years ago my friend used to read Shonen Jump and showed me the chapter where they met Shu Shu, I thought "What the hell?!" and wasn't interested, then my cousin had the chapter where he was fighting Don Kreig and I thought "Meh pretty cool" not realizing it was the same series… I saw the 4kids dub and pieced it together and I sorta liked it until I realised how cheesy it was then I found that the dub was butchered. And well here I am.

There was a fat ugly woman molesting a young kid.
It wasn't good.
The opener was absolute trash.
The theme song was embarrassing.
But if you give it time you fall in love with it, and the train wreck becomes modern art.

MY First Impression? Oh wow, I actually freaked myself out after seeing Luffy stretch for the first time on the internet, about to punch Kuro about 5 or 6 years ago. It was just too awkward and strange for my 10 yr old mind to grasp. So weird and creepy were my first impressionZ.
I picked up the Sept 2003 issue of NA Jump, I had started out at the final buggy fight, I really loved it, but I liked Yuyu and Naruto mroe back then. Then there was the Ussopp/Kuroneko arc, which got me even less interested. But finally, Baratie got me hooked, and then came Arlong Park and Whiskey Peak, by then I was addicted.
