So far, we know that Luffy is easily the strongest on the crew. However, is he a good leader? Let's hold him up to the greatest captain ever, Jean-Luc Picard.
JLP: Has an extensive knowledge base ranging from Federation laws to Strategy to Archeology.
MDL: Doesn't.
JLP: Can pilot a gigantic starship through the vast reaches of space and almost never gets lost.
MDL: Couldn't find his way north.
JLP: A remarkably delicate sense of diplomacy.
MDL: Asked a skeleton if it poops (This also ties into the first point).
And the final and most crucial point.
JLP: Inspires loyalty in all his crew members to the point that any would die for him.
MDL: All the crew members except for two have left the Straw Hat Pirates
voluntarily. I don't count Chopper as leaving the crew since there was an explosion and Franky hasn't yet been a part of the crew long enough.
My main point is that Luffy can only inspire loyalty in a few types of people that we have seen so far: furries and perverts. Is this really the type of captain the Straw Hats need on the most treacherous ocean?
Is Luffy that good of a captain?
-
-
Have you really read the whole manga and understand why the crew decided to join?
Why they always say "Luffy is really stupid" but still put trust and respect toward him?Re-read the Arlong fight.
-
Personally I liked Commander Sisko (sic) better than Picard, if only for the fact that he had the gumption to punch Q when Picard would have stood there pontificating and arguing. Then again, I'm a Man of Action-I get bored with the talking parts. Besides, Luffy hasn't had any of his crew die yet. I distinctly remember that Tasha Yar died and Picard was not able to do anything about it. So yes, People do leave Luffy's crew-but they typically come back. The only way people left Picard's crew was in a body bag.
-
Of course Luffy has poor captaining skills. Thats why half the time someone else will run the crew. Despite this though when one of his nakama need him he'll be there and thats more important to his crew than having someone who can navigate or read architectual ruins and as was mentioned above re-read the arlong arc.
Also note that we are talking about pirates here, typically for pirates the captain of the crew is the one who wins the most fights ie the strongest, irrespective of skill.
-
Go read the Arlong battle again and you'll see why Luffy makes a good captain.
It's all been explained before.

Stareing at the thread i find myself wondering if the OP is not serious but the people responding did not get that or if they did get it and im just missing the joke…. or if the OP really was serious and im just not getting anything. =S

…what?
Luffy's incompetent as a captain, but not as a leader. Like everyone else said: Arlong arc.

@Mr.:
…what?
my exact reaction to this thread.
especially the part about beeing able to navigate a bigass starshipcruiser and compareing the paid crew that themselves sought employment in the federation to a bunch of freewilled spirits persuaded to follow another on a grand adventure with no economical compensation or dental plan…:wassat: -
Although Jean-Luc Picard is a Sexy Older Man, and I respect his captainly-ness, Luffy is, as others before have pointed out, a wonderful leader. Though not really on purpose or through any other sort of skills. It's just his personality.
Luffy ISN'T a great captain. Yet. He's still getting character development in that sense along with the other crew members. I mean, the first time he actually asserted himself in his role as captain was on the Baratie when he ordered Zoro and Usopp to get Nami back.
In Drum, Vivi showed him that he has alot to learn about diplomacy, and that he can't always rely on pure instinct and brute strngth to get himself through a situation.
The fight between Luffy & Usopp, and the chapter entitled "Captain" were meant to point these things out - Luffy is still feeling out his role as captain, and there are times when the crew HAS to listen to him. A large portion of the problem between Luffy and Usopp was Usopp's inability to see Luffy in that respect, and Luffy's abrupt decision to assert himself as such.
Luffy will develop more as the story progresses, along with the others. He has already become alot more serious since the series began, without comepletely losing his characteristics as a goofy easygoing guy.
Fighting skills/power-ups =/= character development

Never could there have been a better time and place for that. XD
The example is really just so out there and basically based on an extremely narrow view that I can't find any reason to even bother responding.
Just reading the manga from chapter 1 to current answers your question beyond a shadow of a doubt. I doubt Luffy's crew would really care all that much for JLP's style of being a captain anyway. Because they're pirates, not Starfleet. -
Luffy may be a complete idiot but as a captain he's great. Sure he can't do all those things Jean what's his name could do but that's why he has Nakama. His purpose is to protect everyone else and he does it pretty well. He has a unique intelligence on how to handle situations too. Like Luffy going after crocodile instead of trying to find the rebels, Luffy fighting with Laboon, why Luffy wouldn't stop the fight with Usopp, Luffy beating the shit out of Coby, Luffy not fighting Bellamy etc. He also always knows who to fight first to make sure he protects his crew. Luffy is a great captain and his nakama respect and admire him a lot.
-
He IS a good captain. On real pirate ships, the captain was often a man of strength that people put their trust into. The quartermaster (Nami fills this role) actually had control of the navigation and the internal affairs of the crew.
Does that make Nami the true captain? No. Oda likely based the manga off of real life pirate crews, thus, the navigator often was in control while on the ship. And isn't this often the case in their travels? The only time she didn't actually fill this role was when she was infected by the Kestia bite. Even then, Vivi took over for her.
Luffy's job is not to keep control. That's Nami's. Nami, honestly, is just doing her job. A captain by definition is simply a figurehead that's good in battle and respected; Luffy's job is just that.
-
i also think that luffy is a very good captain! he is not a typical captain, cause he isn't a control freak, who is abusing his powers. he gives his nakamas enough free space. they know that but in certain situations they have to do what the "captain" wants. furthermore luffy is very reliable. he would give for sure his life for saving his nakamas!!!

I agree with him Luffy is a good captain because he helps hi nakama anf helps other people plus he is incredable strong but nami is in charge because she is the navigator ans she has to tell them what to do.

Thank you, dear sir. This is awesome and I am glad I started this thread, just because of this. I'm serious about that, not so much about my original point. I was joking, mostly. If I had a choice, I'd be on the Straw Hat Crew. Originally I wanted to put at the end of the post "Paid for by the Commitee to Elect Zorro For Captain", then decided against it. Of course Luffy is a good captain, just not a smart one. He really gets you inspired and sets a good course for the crew to follow. Yeah he wants to be Pirate King, but if something looks fun he's going there first. It really took me a long time to think of that list…
P.S. I've read the Arlong arc about 5 times. Gum-Gum Axe was the coolest attack until Gum-Gum Storm. -
…..honestly, Diane? I'm surprised.

P.S. I've read the Arlong arc about 5 times. Gum-Gum Axe was the coolest attack until Gum-Gum Storm. It's not just because he finds it cool/funny. Do you even notice what happens before Luffy takes a reckless decision?
1-He meets someone in despair that he happens to find "cool".
2-He finds out that this "Cool Person" has some kind of problem.
3-Hidding his intentions behind "OMFG! AWESOME!", he goes to a place previously mentioned by the "Cool person"That happened with both Skypeia and now Thriller Bark. I dunno in what other Arcs Luffy went to some unknown place because he found it amuzing. He also asked Gaimon to Join even tough he was "useless in battle". That's just because Luffy is simple Minded, wich is a Good thing, things would have been different if he had been Selfish like Krieg or Buggy, and we know the later changed after his last encounter with Luffy.
Luffy just has a great respect for the dreams of Others. I doubt that he will stop Zoro if one day he decides that leaving the crew would be the best to become the World's greatest Swordman, of course, that's mere speculation, and I doubt Zoro would leave the Strawhats without Luffy giving him a good reason.
And it's One Piece. There are too many "Incompetent" captains out there, do you think "Real Pirates" would respect someone like Foxy?
The only formidable pirates that we have seen so far are the Younko and Blackbeard, but that's just how Oda wanted things to be.
-
Luffys the foundation without him the Straw Hats would of failed alot, ect. beating Arlong, Crocodile, and even if they managed to beat them they wouldn't have ever gotten past Enel if they even decided to go to sky island. But when I think of it Luffy is more close to a real life captain if any, real captains had there ship run with a democracy where the crew could speak there mind and such, the captain was only in charge of plotting the course, sailing the ship, and the captain had complete control during time of battle. Besides the sailing part I would say Luffy is pretty close to a real life Pirate captain.
-
Mr.Bushido this thread should be stickied due to your entry. Damn, I laughed more than ever from a forum @ that…
Anyway, do you actually read/watch One Piece? I don't even subscribe to the idea that Luffy is dumb. He seems more unpredictable, mysterious and odd to me. I mean Luffy always is in control of the situation and knows exactly what needs to be done and said for the greater good of his crew. That's part of what makes him a GREAT captain.
I like how unpreditable Luffy is,because he has basically shown that despite how he acts, he is the most reliable and trustworthy SH. Thus the crew members just follow him without question and have faith in his craziness because somehow it works out.
-
OP isnt serious… he just wanted to compare something to picard...
-
Sorry, but he's a pirate. He doesn't need extensive knowledge of laws and diplomacy. In fact, they seem to enjoy going against the very ideas of such. They loot, pillage, plunder, and every other adjective that goes with such.
Part of being a good leader is surrounding yourself with the right people, and Luffy has done as much. Truth be told, getting himself mixed up in risky business outside the realm of gold doesn't make him a good captain in a strict ends-compensation sense, but in the end it strengthens the bonds with his team.
His ability to inspire steadfast trust and get his crew to do whatever, however, is his major strength. And not one to be overlooked.
-
What can I do?
I can Beat you.
Find that quote, and the mystery is solved. I'll give you a hint. Fishmen.
And to Mr Bushido. You've posted that like 3 times before, its not funny anymore. -
You are the about only one that thinks that that posted in this thread isnt funny moria…
-
Despite Luffy's shortcomings, an entire crew all with high bounties continue to follow him. He demands their respect, and his charisma inspired admiration from those not even part of their crew. Yah, Luffy is a good captain.
-

Is just the Straw Hat. They are the Straw Hats, not the Luffies….
-
… i demand a smily on jokes like that! =P
-
When did Zoro and Sanji leave the crew? Or Chopper for that matter?
-
You are the about only one that thinks that that posted in this thread isnt funny moria…
It is funny. Until you've seen it multiple times by the same person. I prefer jokes to be original, not the same slapstick crap that other people laugh at idiotically. Feel free not to be Captain Obvious from now on too.
-
Maybe its not really intended primarily as a joke in the other threads? but merely to show that he would go out of his way to ask what the bloody #### those people are talking about?
its a bit lighter on the mood then saying for example "WHAT THE F-CK ARE YOU DIPSH-TS SMOKEING!?" while roughly getting the same effect.
@Common:"A picture says more then a thousand words"
-
yeah he is… the best captain
-
Was Gol D. Roger a good Captain? I think it depends on who you ask.
-
Luffy would go to hell and back for each and every one of his crew. He would start a war with the entire world to save any one of them. He is a good captain.
Also, obvious troll is obvious.
-
I think Luffy already explained this to everyone and their grandmother. He can kick yo ass fo. Lets see that other guy dfo that. Though I hope Luffy grew over the break and can give better direction to his crew.

Really? What is with these 2011'rs reviving dead threads…

I figured it was old when the TS said that Franky was new member.

I wouldn't mind it so much, if the threads they revived weren't completely terrible.
-
I'm surprised the StrawHats aren't all/most of them - dead by this point.
-
Honestly what is it with new members posting in old threads.
"Alright I'm new here. Now I could click the "whats new" tab to see what's currently going on…oh OH? What's this? A thread that hasn't been updated in 4 years! YES! This is what I must do!"

I can understand, honestly. When a newbie joins AP throwing their opinion into a thread that sometimes has hundreds of pages can be intimidating. It's a lot easier to be vocal in a thread with 1-2 pages and one with a simple premise like ~ How hard does Luffy captain?
Now, how they actually find these threads I have no idea.
-
What is this??
Luffy is a wonderful captain, he cares for his crew and would stick up for them no matter what. That's all that matters, plus it's pretty obvious he's the strongest and the leader has to be the strongest to be successful.
-
